anniversary
of

Whereas
the
effort
to
grant
voting
rights
to
women
began
as
protests
against
inequality
and
spread
across
the
united
states
into
a
national
movement
beginning
in
1848
and
culminating
in
the
passage
of
the
19th
amendment
72
years
later.
Whereas
tennessee
was
the
final
state
needed
for
ratification
of
the
amendment
and
after
a
difficult
fight
in
the
tennessee
legislature,
added
its
name
to
the
states
determined
to
reduce
inequality
in
the
country
and
extend
universal
suffrage
to
women
and
whereas
many
tennesseans
devoted
themselves
to
the
passage
of
the
amendment,
including
many
leaders
from
hamilton
county.

august

therefore,
I

proclaim
the
day
august
18th
2020
in
honor
of
the
women's
suffrage
movement
and
the
passage
of
the
19th
amendment
to
the

constitution

call
upon
all
citizens
to
recognize
his
historic
accomplishment
and
to
be
reminded
that
the
efforts
of
these
women
made
a
difference
and
know
the
joy
that
comes
with
every
step
toward
equality
for
all.

we

and
think
that
it's
only
been
a
hundred
years
that
women
have,
you
know,
gained
the
right
to
vote
and
when
we
think
about
it
from

black
women,
we
had
to
continue
that
fight.

Alongside
with
our
our
counterparts
of
white
people,
to
assist
us
in
making
sure
that
we
had
the
right
to
vote
and
that's
why
it's
more
important
now
today,
100
years
later,
that
we
exercise
that
right,
because
the
movement
is
still
continuing
and
that's
why
it
was
important
for
the
voting
rights
act
to
get
passed
as
well,
because
it
justified
the
14th
amendment
and
the
15th
amendment,
because
there
were
laws
that
were
put
in
place
that
still
prohibited
blacks
from
voting.

most.
Definitely
it
is
a
historical
moment
for
me.
I
I
gotta
say
once
I
regained
my
right
to
vote.
I
didn't
take
for
granted
not
one
time
to
not
cast
my
vote
if
the
rain
didn't
stop
me
from
casting
my
vote,
and
I
just
encourage
everybody
if
your
rights
have
been
taken
away
from
voting.
Please
get
your
rights
restored
to
vote.
That's
very
important.
Stop
saying
that
your
vote
doesn't
matter
because
it
does
it
does
when
we're
when
we're
looking
back
at
our
grandmothers,
that's
in
their
80s
and
90s.

why
you
know
they
fought
100
year.
They
were
able
to
obtain
that
vote
and
that's
why,
on
every
sunday,
every
vote

they
put
on
a

outfits
to
make
sure
that
they
go
vote
at
the
election
commission

voting
polls
are
and
we
have
to
get.
We
have
to
do
the
exact
same
thing
to
make
sure
that
our
voices
are
heard
through
our
vote.

highly
encourage
all
tennessee
citizens

watch

anti-suffrage

treasure

the

the

to

this:
there's
this
big
hubbub
about
nature
road
and
has
been
going
on
for
some
time.
All
I
can
tell
you
is
there's
about
24,
more
acres
that
has
never
been
raided
at
waterside.

would
have
at
one
point
fed
into
the
main
body
of
waterside.
That
will
no
longer
happen.
Elam
road,
which
was
the
main
artery
to
take.
What
would
have
been
a
phase
two
or
phase
three
back
out
to
nature,
will
be
closed.
It
would
be
strictly
used
for
pedestrians.
I
think
only
over
24
acres,
only
four
acres,
but
it
would
remotely
be
considered
the
rest
of
the
properties
will
all
enter
and
exit
off
gun
barrel
if
they
want
to
get
into
into
water,
so
they
won't
really
be
affecting
that.

only
thing
I'm
opposed
to,
if
anything,
is
that
brewer
brothers
will
be
the
ones
that
will
primarily
be
using
napier.
They
will
bring
the
people

bringing
the
pressure
to
napier
and
I
think
they
should
be
the
people
improving
nature.

the
point
is
our
future
developments
will
not
impact
nature
drives
the
drury
brothers
hotel,
which
I
think
is
an
inappropriate
business
strictly,
because
it's
a
hotel
at
that
keys
intersection
should
have
been
something
else,
but
we
can't
control
that
they
have
their
rights.
They've
got
the
property
legally
and
fair
and
square,
and
certainly
have
the
right
to
be
zoned.

could
not
deny
that
right.

do
have
a
right
to
be
solved
and
I
wish
there'd
been
something
else
there,
but
that's
history,

they
have
the
right
to
be

carry

burden

improving

fix

policy

does
not

performance

reason

we

fight
injustice

justification

why
we

march
18th
1958,

luther
king
jr,
gave
a
sermon
that
says

peace

recognize

anniversaries

when
women
were
constitutionally
granted
the
right
to
vote,
but
also
to
recognize
the
shortcomings
of
those
moments
and

the
costs
of

equity.

That
society
at
large
sees
those
the
african-american.
Women,
especially
were
notably
excluded
from
the
conventions
and
from
the
suffrage
movement,
and
had
to
have
several
separate
fights
in
order
to
secure
their
own
rights
to
vote,
as
councilwoman
kunrod
actually
earlier
earlier
alluded
to
with
the
voting
rights
act
which
has
been
under
attack,
but
that's
outside
of
the
purview
of
the
council
and
a
different
conversation.

But
I
think
what
what
is
important
for
the
council
to
consider
is
the
both
the
lagging
the
lagging
trails
of
equity
and
the
uncomfortable,
uncomfortable
conversations
and
uncomfortable
movements
forward
in
the
in
the
progress
of
equity.
So
there
were
many
conversations
by
counselors
earlier
of
literally.

What
is
the
cost
benefit
analysis
of
making
sure
that
this
public
good
is
equitable,
the
the
the
implication
of
which
being
is
it
actually
materially
worth
it
to
us
as
a
city
to
have
an
equitable
public
works
or
equitable
fee
structures
or
equitable
water
quality
structures,
or
anything
like
that?
And
that's
ridiculous
to
me.
I
I
I
I'm
calling
in
to
condemn
that
largely,
but
I
think
also
in
in
considering
this.
You
have
to
consider
again
and
I'm
sure
this
is
something
that
they
would
cover
in
your
racial
equity
training.

But
you
have
to
consider
why
something
makes
you
uncomfortable
like
what
what
hidden
inequities
you
have
within
yourself
and
that
you
don't
realize,
and
what
sorts
of
things
must
you
personally
and
individually
do
in
order
to,
especially
while
you're
in
a
position
of
power
in
order
to
prevent
perpetuating
those
things
and
prevent
those
inequities
becoming
much
larger
than
just
you
and
your
personal
interactions,
but
instead
becoming
institutional
inequities
and
and
institutional
failings.
And
so
I
call
on
the
council
to
move
forward
much
more
quickly.
