A
Hi
everyone
I'm
Andy
Masek
I'm,
the
president
here
at
the
Heinz
History
Center,
but
today
I'm
wearing
my
bicentennial
hat
the
mayor
mayor,
Peduto
appointed
me,
the
chairman
of
the
Pittsburgh
bicentennial
commission.
Most
of
you
know
of
that
yep
George
Washington
in
general,
Forbes
founded
Fort
Pitt
in
1758
more
than
250
years
ago,
but
Pittsburgh
didn't
become
a
city
until
18
16.
So
2016
is
the
200th
anniversary.
That's
right,
Bicentennial
for
you
latin
scholars.
A
B
Thank
you
Andy
and
welcome
everyone
good
afternoon
on
behalf
of
william
marshall,
william
b
marshall,
CEO
and
founder
of
stop
the
violence
pittsburgh.
We
are
really
pleased
to
inform
you
that
on
monday,
excuse
me
on
thursday
februari
25th,
you
stop
the
violence.
Pittsburgh
in
partnership
with
a
number
of
organizations,
including
the
Heinz
History
Center,
will
hold
a
symposium,
a
black
honors
gala
and
symposia
at
the
Carnegie
Music
Hall
Pittsburgh's
black
honors
gala
is
one
of
many
events
that
will
be
held
as
Andy
mentioned
in
conjunction
with
the
bicentennial
celebration.
B
Lemuel
Goines
kaylee
were
ervice
and
others
in
economics,
Cumberland,
Willis,
Posey
senior,
John,
VaShawn
and
others
and
entertainment,
Phyllis,
Phyllis,
Hyman,
erroll,
garner
august
wilson
and
others.
The
presenters
at
the
gala
will
be
professor
Larry
Glasgow
for
the
University
of
Pittsburgh,
dr.
Steven
Jackson.
If
you're
here,
if
you
can
be
stand
to
be
recognized,
dr.
Steven,
Jackson,
Reverend,
dr.
Steven
Jackson,
excuse
me
from
the
historic
Bethel
AME
Church.
B
B
B
B
Sponsors
of
the
event
include
the
poise
fondation
University
of
Pittsburgh
Cricket
Wireless
rice
enterprises,
rivers,
casino,
Pittsburgh,
that
glass
center
in
the
Carnegie
Museum
of
Art
teeny
Harris
collection,
as
well
as
the
Pittsburgh
price,
to
become
a
sponsor
or
supporter
of
this
event
or
for
more
information,
will
provide
that
contact
information.
But
you
can
also
email,
be
marshall
productions,
@
yahoo.com.
C
C
Before
proclamation
I'd
like
to
read
that
will
become
part
of
the
city's
record.
I'd
like
to
thank,
be
marshal
for
putting
together
an
event
to
recognize
the
importance
and
the
significance
of
what
this
community
is
done
in
shaping
the
city
in
recognizing
the
individuals
that
have
helped
to
make
that
happen.
Whereas
stop
the
violence.
C
C
C
D
C
D
B
C
D
C
F
B
They
led
up
to
this
point
so
John.
Thank
you
very
much.
This
event
would
also
not
be
possible
without
the
sponsors
I
mentioned
a
few
of
them
earlier,
but
now
I
want
them
to
come
up
and
be
recognized.
Make
a
few
words
say
a
few
words
on
behalf
of
their
involvement
with
the
project.
So
I
would
like
to
bring
up
mark
lewis
from
the
poise
foundation
and
then
follow
away.
Mark
will
be
University
of
Pittsburgh
Dean,
kathy
humphries.
If
she's
here
in
the
ramon
heart
from
rivers,
casino.
F
F
We
would
like
to
thank
be
marshal
for
his
efforts
in
work
and
designing
and
executing
we're
putting
on
this
great
event,
I
was
told
I
had
about
five
minutes
to
talk
about
my
organization,
I'm
a
little
under
the
weather,
so
I'm
make
that
two
minutes,
and
you
can
applause
as
I'm
sure
you
want
to
applause,
for
that
supports
foundation,
is
excited
to
support
this
event,
because
it
does
highlight
the
contributions
of
african-americans
in
the
region.
Our
mission
of
the
foundation
is
to
help
the
Pittsburgh
regions.
African-American
community
become
more
self-sufficient
and
self-sustaining.
F
This
mission
is
very
hard
to
accomplish
at
times,
because
in
a
Pittsburgh
region
we
rarely
see
African
Americans,
who
are
achieving
contrary
to
what
you
see.
A
large
percentage
of
our
community
is
thriving,
yet
the
gap
between
those
who
are,
and
those
who
are
not
is
way
too
wide,
as
well
as
the
number
of
african-american
families
not
doing
well
must
be
addressed
at
poised.
F
We
believe
that
is
essential.
That
we
lift
up
not
just
african-american
families,
but
the
institution
of
family
itself.
We
also
believe
that
we
have
to
create
a
strategy
to
rebuild
the
concept
of
community
and
once
again
determine
how
to
build
strong
relationships
with
those
who
currently
are
here
and
as
important.
Those
who
will
be
coming
here.
This
is
how
you
begin
to
heal
community.
We
cannot
continue
to
focus
on
justice,
symptoms
without
understanding
and
dealing
with
the
causes
gun.
Violence
is
a
symptom.
Drug
addiction
is
a
symptom.
Unemployment
is
a
symptom.
F
But
to
do
this,
we
must
lift
up
the
positive
to
give
our
kids
something
to
aspire
to
and
show
them
the
role
models
that
they
can
be
proud
of,
and
so
this
event
is
a
great
example
of
lifting
up
those
in
our
community
who
portray
a
positive
image,
a
positive
influence
and
inspire
our
community
to
be
great.
Thank.
E
Greetings
from
rivers,
casino,
my
name
is
Ramon
heart
and
I'm
the
director
of
community
relations.
As
a
member
of
the
pittsburgh
business
community
rivers
casino
is
honored
to
serve
as
a
sponsor
for
this
bicentennial
celebration
that
will
honor
and
recognize
the
contributions
of
black
leaders
in
the
city
of
Pittsburgh.
E
As
someone
who
was
born
and
raised
in
Pittsburgh
on
the
north
side
of
Manchester
in
particular,
I
often
acknowledge
that
I'm
only
a
reflection
of
the
many
investments
that
were
made
in
me,
indirectly
or
directly
by
people
like
miss
Alma,
Steve,
Fox,
Judge,
J,
Warren,
Watson,
mark
brentley,
Bishop,
Lauren
man,
professor
Rolf
Proctor,
Roger,
Humphries,
Reverend,
Victor,
J,
grisbee
and
Valerie
McDonald
Roberts.
Each
of
them
have
served
as
a
beacon
of
light.
E
In
many
people
too
many
people
across
the
city,
young
and
old
rivers
casino,
is
very
much
committed
to
pursuing
excellence
in
the
area
of
diversity
and
inclusion.
We
are
committed
to
implementing
best
practices
to
ensure
that
we
secure
a
diverse
workforce
and
provide
the
type
of
excellent
service
that
our
guests
deserve,
and
this
commitment
to
diversity
extends
to
the
types
of
vendors
and
suppliers
that
provides
goods
and
services
to
us
every
day.
E
We
believe
that
we,
when
we
partner
with
diverse
groups
of
people,
organizations
and
businesses,
there
are
limitless
opportunities
that
will
ultimately
position
all
of
us
to
win.
In
conclusion,
I
want
to
thank
be
marshal
for
his
leadership.
I
want
to
thank
everyone
who
is
supporting
this
initiative
and
I
want
to
thank
you
for
allowing
rivers
casino
to
be
a
part
of
this
wonderful
initiative.
Thank
you.
B
I'd
also
like
to
recognize
the
sponsors
for
the
Pittsburgh
disadvantaged
high
school
students
and
their
attendance
at
the
black
honors
event.
That
means
these
organizations
and
it
rituals,
will
sponsor
the
attendance
of
high
school
students
to
attend
this
black
honors
event,
and
they
include
Joel
Grey
and
the
Pittsburgh
Pirates
Michelle
rice.
B
G
G
One
of
the
things
that
he
expressed
to
me
very
seriously
this
morning,
is
that
we
as
a
community
have
learned
how
to
heal.
But,
more
importantly,
we
have
to
learn
how
to
love
one
of
the
things
that
we
try
to
stress
from
our
office.
The
fact
that
we
have
to
learn
to
love
instead
of
hate
people
ask.
Why
are
we
having
all
of
this
problems
we're
having
our
community?
Why
do
we
have
all
the
violence
that
we
have
is
because
we
don't
have
love
among
us?
You
see
2,000
years
ago.
G
Somebody
walked
this
earth
who
was
love
made
manifest,
who
show
people
how
to
love?
Who
gave
the
people
to
pattern?
How
to
love?
He
loves
and
didn't
demand,
love
and
return.
So
that's
to
everybody
this
mortise
afternoon,
I
want
to
say
to
you
bless
or
to
pure
and
heart:
they
love
and
don't
demand,
love
and
return,
and
this
is
what
we're
trying
to
say
well
solve
our
problems
today,
if
we
loved
each
other
much
better.
Take
a
handful
of
this
afternoon.
G
It
was
interesting
coming
up
here
on
this
podium
sitting
down
and
and
seeing
all
the
ones
who
came
before
me:
hey
Pauly's,
these
notes
and
stuff.
They
had
their
stuff
ready.
We're
just
told
me
this
morning,
I
didn't
know
what
was
going.
I
was
coming
down.
Just
do
some
proclamations
a
day
like
I,
usually
do
I'm
going
to
do
that
as
well.
G
I
want
to
say
to
you
is
that
life
throws
us
lemons
or
we
get
lemons
and
the
old
saying
is
you
make
lemonade
out
of
those
lemons
and
not
someone
try
to
do
this
afternoon?
Presenting
these
these
proclamation?
If
Atwood
said
he
would
have
said
to
you
when
I
first
spoke
to,
you
can
do
better
than
that
good
afternoon.
Everyone
make
sure
you
show
your
wake
up.
Then
I
have
12
I'm,
not
gonna,
read
them
all,
which
is
12
proclamations
here
that
were
presented,
that
we're
prepared
for
this
particular
occasion.
G
G
So
what
I'm
going
to
do
that
I,
don't
believe
all
12
of
these
individuals
are
here
they-
maybe
I'm
not
sure,
but
if
you're
here,
I'm
gonna
call
your
name
out
and
I'm
willing
to
read
the
last
portion
of
your
your
citation.
Is
that
all
right,
if
you
could
be
that
clap
your
hands
y'all
to
fight
in
here,
I
like
to
snap
dr.
Holly
that
do
that
next
time,
I
like
this
now,
if
mad
dad
is
in
the
house,
please
come
get
your
citation,
please
that
how
you
want.
G
G
And
now
I'm
here,
for
they
resolve
the

here
this
afternoon,
brother
Ted,
who
you
are
sir.
G
It's
been
a
real
pleasure
getting
to
know
dr.
Johnson
over
the
years.
I
had
the
pleasure
when
I
was
wasn't
my
teaching
days
to
have
his
daughter
as
one
of
my
students
she
turned
all
right,
then
she
doc
I
didn't
hurt
her
too
bad
in
her
high
school
years,
but
and
you
and
you
and
such
a
Pam
does
a
wonderful
job
with
her

and
therefore
let
it
be
resolved.

so
many
outstanding

who
are
in
this

had
opportunity
to
work
with
dr.,

and
also
ryan

who
is
also
associated
with
this

and
now
I'm
therefore
let
it
be
resolved.

G
G
I'm
I
go
up
to
the
top
on
this.
One
changed
up
just
a
little
bit
if
it's
all
right
with
you,
whereas
in

appreciate

Let's
give
a

please
thanks.
G
E
G
Whereas
the
best
of
the
bad
foundations
has
been
a
tireless
advocate
and
supporter
for

communities
in

Let's

for
you
haven't,
come
a
little
closer
I,
don't
have
any

yet
em
all
right
come
on
over
here.
G
G
Just
like
to
say,
it
has
been
an
honor
to
have
opportunity
to
participate
in
this
ceremony
this
afternoon
again,
I
like
to
also
thank
those
of
you
who
have
prayers
for
state
rep,
Gainey's
family
through
this
ordeal
and
one
of
the
things
that
I
would
like
to
press
upon
us
as
a
community
as
we
go
through.
This
is
not
a
non-stop
seems
like
every
day,
mayor
Peduto,
as
you
know,
and
state
Rep
Wheatley.
G
As
you
know,
and
all
of
you
sit
in
this
room,
though
there's
not
a
day
go
by
that
someone's,
not
a
victim
of
gun,
violence
or
domestic
violence,
the
violence
period,
but
let's
continue
to
work
hard
as
a
community
to
come
together,
learn
to
love
instead
of
hate.
We
learn
to
love
instead
of
hate,
because
love
can
conquer
everything.
Do
you
believe
that,
in
this
room,
if
you
believe
thats,
they
love
can
conquer
everything,
love
conquers,
all
love,
creates
and
hate
to
destroy.
Thank
you,
brother,
be
I'm
on.
B
H
H
We
keep
pontificating
that
we
want
to
stop
it,
that
we
care
about
the
issue
and
year
after
year
we
see
too
many
of
our
families
destroyed
by
this
tragedy
that
is
preventable,
and
so,
as
I
stand
here
to
stand
with
be
marshall,
and
all
of
you
I
want
to
publicly
express
that
it
has
to
stop
that
we
have
to
do
more
than
what
we've
normally
have
done.
That
is
not
enough
to
talk
about
it.
H
We
have
to
put
our
resources
behind
so
I'm
going
to
leave
this
with
a
little
caveat,
we're
starting
off
Black,
History,
Month
and
I
like
to
talk
to
my
youth,
about
the
image
of
Frederick
Douglass.
In
a
time
where
men
and
women
of
color
were
killed,
that
they
try
to
educate
themselves.
This
man
became
a
millionaire
and
by
the
time
he
left
this
earth,
not
only
was
he
a
millionaire
who
taught
himself
to
read
him
right,
but
he
had
a
legacy
in
the
history
that
impacted
the
world
hundreds
of
years
later.
H
So
that
tells
me
we
can
do
anything.
So
if
we
really
want
to
stop
violence,
if
we
really
want
to
see
communities
across
pittsburgh
in
allegheny,
county
grow
together
and
really
want
to
meet
the
mantle
of
a
livable
city
for
all,
it
can
happen,
but
it
cannot
happen
just
with
verbiage.
You
need
resources
to
do
it.
H
So
be
marshall
and
stop
the
violence.
Pittsburgh
I
stand
here
in
conjunction
with
you
and
the
2016
black
honor,
suppose,
iam
and
gala.
The
Commonwealth
of
Pennsylvania
is
proud
to
recognize
those
individuals
and
organizations
who
have
brought
joy
and
happiness
to
others
and
displayed
excellent
in
an
area
and
I'm
going
to
do
what
brother
marrow
did
is
get
down
to
the
last
part.
So
we
won't
keep
you
here
forever
now,
therefore,
be
it
resolved.
H
Thank
you
now,
therefore,
be
it
resolved.
The
house
of
representative
of
Commonwealth
of
Pennsylvania
pays
tribute
to
poor

for
his
years
of
selfless
dedicated
public
service
to
the
Pittsburgh
area
community
and
his
unwavering
commitment
to
the
education,
social
advancement,
development
advocacy
of
our
youth.

Now,
therefore,
be
it
resolved
the
House
of
Representative.
The
Commonwealth
of
Pennsylvania
pays
tribute
to
shadow
student-athletes
for
selfless
and
dedicated
public
service
to
the

community
and
unwavering

to

B
Some
of
you
may
have
wondered
why
this
press
conference
and
it's
kickoff
not
only
for
Black
History
Month,
but
also
for
the
gala,
has
taken
place
here
at
the
Heinz
History
Center.
It's
not
only
because
the
Bicentennial
is
a
historic
event,
but
also
because
of
the
commitment
and
the
relationship
that
the
Heinz
History
Center
is
building
with
communities
across
the
county
in
December
2014,
and
my
role
is
president
of
the
Association
of
American
museums.
B
B
B
We
have
worked
and
collaborated
with
a
number
of
organizations,
including
the
American
Music
Institute.
We've
collaborated
and
have
advice
from
dr.
Nelson
Harrison
on
some
of
our
past
event,
exhibits
so
we're
always
including
community
and
the
work
that
we
do
so
I
urge
you
to
take
time.
It's
a
long
term
exhibit,
which
means
it's
going
to
be
up
for
at
least
10
years.
So
you
have
no
excuse
not
to
involve
yourself
with
that
exhibition.
B
I
would
also
end
by
saying
thank
you
for
attending
this
press
conference
and
be
sure
to
mark
your
calendars
for
februari
25th
6
p.m.
at
carnegie,
music
hall
in
oakland,
and
I
believe
the
tickets
for
that
event
are
available.
Now
and
again,
if
you
go
to
be
Marshalls
website,
you
can
get
more
information
