Description
On this episode of CityTalk, John interviews Dana Robinson and Smyth Welton... both from the Department of Innovation & Performance.
A
Welcome
to
city
talk
on
city,
channel,
Pittsburgh,
I'm,
John,
McIntyre
and
say
hello
to
dana
Robinson,
who
is
a
systems
administrator
for
the
Department
of
innovation
and
performance
thanks,
so
much
for
being
here
today,
good
to
see
it
so
the
Department
of
innovation
and
performance.
Are
you
more
of
an
innovator
or
a
performer,
probably
a
little
bit
of
both
cool
and
before
we
get
into
what
a
systems
administrator
does
and
that's
quite
a
responsibility.
Give
us
your
background.
Where
are
you
from
I'm.
B
I'm
with
high
school
Perry
high
school
mm-hmm,
pretty
traditional
academy
what
it
used
to
be
called
elementary
school
I
went
to
school,
called
st.
Matthews,
Lutheran
School,
don't
know
what
they
haven't,
knew:
okay
yeah,
but
the
neighborhood
it
was.
It
was
a
good
place
to
grow
up
man.
It
was
everybody
knew
each
other.
All.
B
B
Education
I'm
still
a
school
now,
but
more
or
less
than
was
more
vocational
technical
schools,
okay,
computer
tech,
I
think,
after
that,
it
became
international
academy
of
design
technology.
Now.
A
B
I've
actually
been
around
computers
about
9
years
old,
seriously,
yeah
my
grandfather,
he
he
introduced
me
to
it.
He
was
a
lifelong
on
the
guy,
airforce
doctor
forces,
and
so
he
was
into
pcs.
He
goes
back
to
the
old
IBM
punch
cards
right,
so
when
I
was
younger,
he
just
always
had
me
around
he'd
show
me
different
things.
He
tended
to
CCAC
used
to
have
these
monthly
meetings
with
guys
that
were
into
technology
and
computers
at
the
town,
and
this
was
before
it
even
blew
up
before
was
like
pcs
was
in
every
household.
D
B
My
grandmother
she
worked
with
putana
Terry's
office.
My
mother
worked
in
per
use
to
be
personal
civil
service,
think
it's
human
resources
and
personnel
now
and
I
have
assisted
works
in
City,
Council
and
I
work
in
City
and
what
he
used
to
be
sitting
information
systems
now
happy
I
was
there
I
started
in
1996
I
just
started
in
the
mailroom
delivering
boxes
and
things
like
that
and
then
I
just
slowly
advanced
I
got
more
I
had
an
opportunity
to
get
into
computers
because
when
I
first
started
they
didn't
have
any
positions
available.
B
A
B
A
B
B
B
B
You
get
stuck
in
in
whatever
niche
that
you're
in,
but
my
understanding
is
that
you
know
I
tea
or
just
information,
technology
and
compasses.
So
many
realms,
it's
good
to
get
a
feel
and
maybe
touch
a
little
bit
of
something
everything
but
always
stay
true
to
your
line
of
work.
So
I
started
out
in
hardware.
Then
I
learned
more
about
software
and
then
those
two
things
you
have
to
know
or
have
some
type
of
background,
to
be
a
system
administrator.
So
there's
a
process
that
you
have
to
go
through
so
interesting.
B
B
Doing
good
cool
yeah
we're
doing
good
and
my
personal
opinion
I've
seen
some
companies
either
still
running
you
know
older,
have
over
software,
older
equipment
and
I
think
the
were
on
the
cutting
edge
right
now.
To
be
honest
with
you,
I
know
that
was
part
of
the
mayor's
initiative
coming
in
and
I.
Think
he's
he's
been
pretty
successful
in
that
regard.
You're.
B
A
B
B
Guess
the
image
is
that
city
employees
are
lazy,
they
come
here
to
get
a
paycheck
and
that's
it.
But
that's
not
been
my
experience,
especially
in
my
department,
every
single
person
I
work
with
they
work
hard.
They
come
to
work,
they
do
the
job
they
stay
on
top
of
things.
They
stay
on
track.
So
I
think
that
that
perception,
I,
don't
know
where
it
came
from,
but
I
don't
believe
that
to
be
true
at
all.
All.
A
E
A
C
A
C
A
C
C
C
C
Could
I
would
do
that
if
they
needed,
but
I
was
more
in
the
design
and
development
of
web
applications?
Okay
side
also
graphic
design.
So
I
did
that
and,
like
I
said,
the
client
volume
was
on
a
deep
on
a
decrease,
so
I
decided
to
look
for
actual
work
for
a
company
and
I
came
across
a
vacancy
in
the
city
of
Pittsburgh
for
a
webmaster
and
I
applied
for
it.
A
C
C
C
C
When
I
first
got
here,
we
had
a
second-generation
web
site
which
it
was
showing
age
at
that
point
it
was
old
and
it
was
not
responsive,
responsive
on
mobile
devices
and
other
things
like
that.
So
we
made
it
a
point
to
update
it,
and
one
of
the
goals
was
to
revamp
the
entire
web
site
and
create
a
car
time
management
system
for
that
website
of
our
own,
and
we
were
successful
doing
that
two
years
ago
and.
A
C
It
can
be
I
usually
do
that
in
your
spare
time.
No
I
wouldn't
want
you
at
home.
You
know,
sometimes
you
get
a
project
that
you
may
have
not
have
done
before,
and
the
challenge
of
that
is
doing
your
research
prior
to
starting
it,
but
we
like
challenges
and
I
think
we
do
a
good
job
at
delivering
the
requests
of
the
city
employees.
Oh
you.
