Description
On this episode of CityTalk, John interviews outgoing Pittsburgh City Council memeber Darlene Harris.
A
Welcome
to
a
very
special
edition
of
City
talk,
we
are
honored
to
have
the
legendary
outgoing
civil
count.
A
city
council
person,
Darlene
Harris,
is
with
us
today,
Darlene
thanks,
so
much
for
doing
the
program.
Thank
you
for
having
me
Councilwoman
you're
certainly
have
a
reputation
for
being
feisty
for
being
a
person
of
the
people.
A
populist.
B

C
A
B
One
of
the
the
hardest
pieces
and
and
Bill
Peduto
was
on
City
Council.
At
that
time,
I
was
the
pension
and
Luke
was
the
mayor
at
that
time,
and
we
had
a
group
called
glass.
I
still
have
a
little
card
in
my
purse.
L
AZ,
yes,
that
was
coming
in
and
from
I
think
was
Chicago
and
they
wanted
to
buy
up
all
of
our
well.
C
C
B
B
We're
talking
about
this,
it
went
in.
We
had
to
come
up
with
two
hundred
million
dollars
by
December
31st
or
the
state
was
going
to
take
our
pension
plan
over
which
would
have
heard
many
many
people
in
the
city
of
Pittsburgh,
so.
B
Once
we
couldn't
do
the
console
controller
plan,
I
looked
at
it
as
I,
look
at
my
own
checkbook
checkbook
at
home
and
decided
well
what?
If
we
just
made
the
payments,
you
know
what,
if
we
made
payments
to
come
up
with
200,
and
that
would
also
be
with
the
garages
and
then
there
would
be
this
put
together
where
council
could
not
touch.
North
America
touch
that
money
until
that
200
million
was
paid
off,
but
yet
be
able
to
have
money
still
into
the
city
which
wouldn't
feel
a
loss
to
the
city.
B
They
were
sitting
there
as
collateral,
so
we
put
it
all
together
and
the
state
said
yes
and
we
we
actually
kept
the
parking
authority
that
belongs
to
us
and
what
happened
is
we
knew
we
were
building
other
garages
and
this
tax
money
would
be
coming
out
of
those
garages
to
make
up
for
the
money
that
we
had
to
wait
to
pay
for
31
years,
which
happened
and
we're
doing
very,
very
well
with
that
right
now.
So.

Thank
you.
A
Back
on
city
talk
like
legendary
outgoing
city,
councilperson
Darlene
Harris,
do
you
prefer
city,
councilperson
city,
council,
woman,
woman
woman?
It
is
thank
you
when
I
came
here
in
1996
there
weren't
nearly
as
many
good
restaurants,
for
example,
I
realize
that's,
not
the
you're
the
focus
of
your
time
in
public
service,
but
it
seems
like
it's
changed,
actually
quite
a
bit
to
some
degree.
Would
you
agree
with
that
and
yeah.
A
B
B
B
A
You
know
it's
funny:
I
can
remember
when
the
city
started
first,
talking
about
putting
cameras
everywhere,
and
some
people,
including
I,
had
some
second
thoughts
because
I
thought
well.
What
is
this
Orwellian
big
brother
is
watching,
but
the
world
is
so
crazy.
It
really
is
a
necessity.
These
days.
Isn't
it
yes.
B
And
in
what
I
would
do
is-
and
this
was
just
in
my
district-
is
just
give
money
to
each
of
the
neighborhoods-
it
was
a
set
of
four
cameras
that
they
would
put
up.
If
they
put
up
the
four,
then
I
would
give
them
more
money
to
put
up
another
four
cameras,
so
believe
it
or
not.
There
were
some
neighborhoods,
it
still
didn't
put
the
cameras
up
and
other
neighborhoods
that
wouldn't
wait
till
the
four
were
up
to
get
money
to
do
the
next
four.
What.
A
B
B
Yes,
I
don't
know,
though
affordable
housing
seems
to
be
unaffordable
to
a
lot
of
people
too.
So
I
don't
know
if
she'd
call
it
affordable.
I
understand.
B
B
B
Right,
I
and
the
building
up
on
Troy
Hill,
for
example,
is
one
of
those
buildings.
They
would
like
to
knock
it
down,
but
I
think
they
should
keep
it
it's
a
historic
building
and
that's
where
the
Senior
Center
used
to
be
and
open
up.
Another
Senior
Center,
which
a
lot
of
people
would
go
to
from
not
only
Troy
Hill
but
spring
garden
and
spurting
out
so.
A
B
B
Yes,
but
her
children,
three
of
them,
go
to
Pittsburgh
Public
Schools,
because
they're,
both
teachers
and
OH,
both
my
daughters
and
my
son-in-law
are
teachers,
so
three
of
them
are
in
the
Pittsburgh
Public
Schools
and
two
of
them
go
to
South
Fayette
and
when
I
sit
down,
I,
don't
see
a
difference
with
anything
any
questions.
I
asked
them
so
they're
all
getting
a
very
good
education.
B
A
C
B
B
But
I
because
of
my
love
for
animals,
I
wanted
to
see
a
free,
spay,
neuter
program.
I
went
out
and
looked
in
other
states
and
no
one
anywhere
had
a
free,
spay
and
neuter
program.
But
what
I
thought
is
we
will
save
on
the
money
that
we're
spending
going
out
and
picking
up
the
dogs
and
the
cats
off
the
street
because
it
was
costing
at
that
time.
I
think
299
dollars
for
one
animal
well,.
A
A
A
B
Some
of
the
other
things
revamped
I
revamped,
the
animal
control
give
it
a
new
name,
is
the
Animal
Care
and
Control.
It
used
to
be
in
the
garbage,
literally
under
garbage
in
a
city,
and
now
it's
under
Public
Safety,
because
even
you
know
a
paramedic
that
might
not
be
able
to
get
it
in
a
house
or
they
firefighters
need
them
or
the
police
need
them.
You
know
now
they're
under
Public
Safety,
where
they
should
have
been.
So
we
do
have
that
and.
A
B
It
will
make
sure
that
the
owners
you
know
are
taking
care
of
them
and
that
the
city
knows
they
have
and
where
they
actually
are
in
a
house
and
case.
You
know
fire
police.
That
also
goes
for
poisonous
snakes.
You
would
be
surprised
where
people
have
out
there,
but
some
of
these
can
harm
or
even
kill.
You
know
police
officer,
fryer,
so
that'd
be
so.
Legislation
is
coming
up
and
I
was
going
to
make
it
four.
