Due
to
her
unusual
height,
the
sellers
referred
to
her
as

on
hello
mo,
was
literate
in
multilingual
and
french
english
and
numerous
indigenous
languages.
She
firmly
believed
that
peace
was
the
only
thing
that
would
save
her
people.
Despite
the
treachery
of
the
whites
she
encountered
throughout
her
life,
she
and
her
family
migrated
to
Pennsylvania
around
1730
due
to
the
white
settlers,
pushing
the
Shawnee
and
other
tribes
westward.
A
Sadly,
the
settlers,
relentless
expansion,
was
forced
on
helymus
family
to
move
yet
again
into
Ohio
territory
near
the
today's
town
of
Chillicothe
on
the
Sierra
River,

later
in
life,
she

Mwanza
nan
Helena
had
relationships
with
white
settlers,
including
Indian
agent,
Colonel
Alexander
McKee,
with
whom
she
had
a
son
Thomas.
A
Her
son
Tammy
Natha,
also
known
as
captain
Butler,
was
born
of
her
union
with
Colonel
Richard
Butler,
for
whom
Butler,
PA
and
Butler
Street
in
Pittsburgh's
Lawrenceville
neighborhood
are
named
when
she
was
young
nun.
Halima
fought
in
multiple
battles,
as
was
known
to
be
powerful
opponent.
She
was
at
the
Battle
of
bushy
run
in
August
1763,
painting
her
body
black
and
fighting
naked,
as
was
the
custom
of
the
Shawnee
people.
A
She
also
fought
in
the
Battle
of
Point
Pleasant
in
1774,
where
the
Shawnee
force
led
by
cornstalk,
was
defeated,
essentially
ending
Lord
Dunmore
swore
the
Shawnee
had
both
male
and
a
female
chiefs.
Mon
halma
became
chief
of
the
largest
Shawnee
village,
located
on
the
Pickaway
plains
in
the
ohio
territory,
where
she
and
her
family
lived.
Woman
are
highly
valued
in
native
American
tribes
and
white
men
often
requested
to
speak
with
the
wise
woman
in
tribes.
A
Her
participation
in
the
colonial
frontier
war
is
apparently
convinced
on
helmet
that
the
survival
of
her
people
depended
on
living
peacefully
with
the
Americans.
Although
non
Helena
and
cornstalks
peace
proposals
were
opposed
by
most
of
the
Shawnee
by
the
Revolution,
she
had
become
the
peace
chief
and
spent
the
rest
of
her
life.
Working
toward
that
goal,
though,
she
had
repeatedly
proven
her
loyalty
to
the
Americans
nan
Helen
and
her
husband,
Melissa,
were
captured
during
the
Northwest
Indian
War
in
1786
Melissa
was
killed
while
being
held
prisoner
at
nan.
How
ammo
was
badly
injured.
A
She
was
in
prison
of
Fort
Pitts
and
spent
her
days
compiling
a
book
of
Shawnee
words
and
their
meaning.
Sadly,
nan
Helena
died
in
1786
shortly
after
her
release
from
Fort
Pitt,
despite
the
betrayal
she
faced
from
Americans
and
her
own
tribe.
Perhaps
on
helmets.
Most
important
legacy
is
that
she
never
stopped
believing
that
peace
was
the
only
answer
for
her
people.
