From YouTube: #TBT: 1993 Mr. Rogers Proclamation Ceremony
Description
Welcome to City Channel Pittsburgh's Throwback Thursday series! We will upload a new episode each Thursday morning.
This week, we're going back to 1993. City of Pittsburgh's then-Mayor Sophie Masloff gives a proclamation to Mr. Rogers in celebration of his 25th anniversary hosting children's television programming.
A
I
can't
tell
you
what
a
great
pleasure
this
is,
and
I've
gained
stature,
my
grandchildren's
eyes
today
by
introducing
Mister
Rogers,
but
if
there's
one
person
that
has
brought
international
acclaim
to
Pittsburgh
and
public
broadcasting
just
by
being
himself
that's
Fred
Rogers.
Mr.
Rogers
I
want
you
to
know
from
my
heart
that
it's
a
great
pleasure
to
take
this
opportunity
to
give
you
this
proclamation
and
recognition
of
25
years
in
public
broadcasting,
and
it's
25
years
of
positive
images
and
role
models
for
children
in
25
years
of
caring
for
our
young
people.
A
You've
done
so
much
for
our
city
and
our
children
by
letting
them
know
that
they
are
special
and
of
themselves
and
that's
a
message
we
can
all
as
well.
I
want
to
thank
you
and
all
the
staff
for
family
communications
that
produces
mr.
Rogers
neighborhood
for
all
of
our
citizens
and
for
making
the
difference
in
generations
of
young
people's
lives.
You've
done
so
much
for
so
many
over
the
years
and
it's
a
pleasure
to
take
time
to
honor
all
your
good
works.
A
C
B
C
Really
do
have
feelings
that
are
so
important
for
us
to
recognize
and
I
can't
think
of
a
more
nurturing
City
than
the
city
of
Pittsburgh
to
take
to
its
heart.
A
neighborhood
like
ours
I
felt
that
for
all
the
40
years
that
we've
been
here
and
I've
been
to
a
lot
of
places,
but
there's
something
about
this
place.
Something
about
this
city
that
encourages
us
to.
A
C
C
C
I
just
remember,
Oh,
30
years
ago,
one
of
the
Pittsburgh
papers
putting
Daniels
stripe
and
tigers
picture
on
the
front
page.
They
were
so
proud
that
Josie
and
I
were
going
to
be
able
to
do
a
Saturday
morning
program
at
NBC
in
New
York
there
it.
It
just
seems
as
if
there's
there's
always
been
so
much
support
and
care
I,
don't
know
whether
that
would
have
happened
anywhere
else
and
that's
what
I
was
trying
to
say
that
I
think
that
it's
work
is
such
a
nurturing
place.
C
A
D
C
B
B
C
Some
sweaters
that
a
lot
of
people
wear-
and
there
have
been
some
of
those
takeoffs
that
have
not
been
a
pleasure
for
us
and
they've,
usually
been
on
the
one
I
think
it
wasn't
was
at
West,
Virginia
or
Virginia
North
Carolina
South
Carolina
was
it
was
a
man
who
dressed
up
in
a
sweater
and
wore
sneakers,
and
this
was
in
the
in
the
afternoon
hours.
He
got
on
the
air
and
thinking
he
was
just
speaking
to
mothers
or
house
fathers
saying
that.
C
He
said
he
he
spoke
even
more
slowly
than
I.
Do
he
said
children
take
your
mother's
hairspray
and
your
daddy's
cigarette
lighter
and
press
the
buttons
together
and
you'll
have
a
blue.
So
we
called
and
Billy
slurs
here
he
can
tell
how
that
got
stuck
very
quickly,
but
you
know
we
have
some
wonderful
people
up:
family,
communicati,
dros
and
there's
Bill
and
slurp
and
there's
a
head
of
Sheriff.
A

A
C
C
The
television
and
radio
have
become,
through
the
years,
enormous
hucksters,
and
we
have
to
remember
to
whom
the
airways
belong,
and
we
must
as
great
an
emphasis
on
the
nurturing
of
the
human
personality
as
we
can.
This
sounds
like
lofty
words,
but
we'll
see
the
fruits
of
what
we've
given
in
the
years
to
come.
C
C
C
F
C
Yeah
this
neck,
this
ankle
has
certainly
slowed
me
down.
I,
don't
know
I've
always
been
led
in
ways
that
I
would
have
never
dreamed.
You
know
when
I
couldn't
sleep
with
this.
With
this
cast
on
my
leg,
I
listened
to
people
on
the
radio
and
saw
programs,
even
programs
that
I
had
been
on
that
I
had
never
seen
before
and
I
think
it's
amazing
what
what
happens
in
in
those
late
hours
of
the
night.
There
are
a
lot
of
lonely
people
in
this
world.
C
E
C
Think
that
that
that's
probably
long
in
the
past,
but
there
have
been
times
that
we
could
have
gone
that
route
and
made
family
communications
much
more
lucrative
than
than
it
ever
was
or
probably
ever
will
be,
but
I
felt
that
it
was
important
not
for
me
personally
not
to
do
commercials
that
children
would
see
because
I
didn't
want
any
child
to
ever
feel
excluded.
I
didn't
want
any
child
to
ever
think
that,
because
I
had
said
on
television,
you
should
buy.
