This week, we're going back to 2000. This is a spotlight piece on the East Liberty neighborhood and it includes Valerie McDonald Roberts, then a member of Pittsburgh City Council.

The
heart
of
Pittsburgh's
East
End
community
is
the
neighborhood
of
East
Liberty,
roughly
8,000
Pittsburghers,
kaali's
Liberty
home,
but
many
more
frequent,
the
neighborhood
because
of
its
expansive
business
district.
The
community
is
partially
represented
by
Valerie
McDonald
now
serving
her
second
term
on
Pittsburgh
City
Council
MS
McDonald
is
the
chairperson
for
the
Committee
on
Finance
and
the
budget.
East
Liberty
is
a
neighborhood
rich
with
diversity.
Churches
of
all
denominations
stand.
Proudly
the
East
Liberty
Presbyterian
Church
Bowen
is
also
home
to
the
East
End
cooperative
ministry.
A
Other
landmarks
of
East
Liberty
include
Peabody
High
School,
the
Pittsburgh
Theological
Seminary,
the
East
Liberty
branch
of
the
Carnegie
Library
zone,
five
police
station
and
Fire
Engine
Company
number,
eight
residents
and
visitors
can
shop,
do
their
banking
or
take
advantage
of
excellent
bus
service
at
the
hub
of
the
neighborhood.
The
business
district
depends
circle.
Enhancing
the
public
perception
of
this
area
is
just
one
of
the
concerns
of
the
East
Liberty
Chamber
of
Commerce.

We're
doing
this
by
we're
working
with
the
Weed
and
Seed
program,
where
there
may
be
people
who
are
doing
loitering
or
graffiti
and
we're
trying
to
eliminate
that
particular
problem.
As
being
part
of
perception,
we
worked
with
the
Highland
Park
Community
Club,
in
establishing
boxes
throughout
the
community
with
flowers,
and
then
there
are
certainly
areas
in
the
community
that
we
planted
flowers
and
then
we
that,
with
the
in
cooperation
and
wonderful
cooperation
of
City
Planning
and
we
developed
this
celebrate
East
Liberty
banner,
which
is
which
has
been
flying
for
the
last
year.
A
Flower
planting
holiday
lighting
and
festive
banners
are
invitations
for
all
to
come
back
and
shop,
East
Liberty
for
residents.
Housing
includes
a
multitude
of
apartment
complexes
as
well
as
single-family
homes.
The
newest
housing
in
the
neighborhood
can
be
found
at
the
corner
of
Penn
and
Mabry
avenues
as
Maylene
myers
explains.

It
is
a

it's
formerly
called
Finley
Park
Finley
Park
was
the
was

was
there
before
and
we've
done
is
come
in
and
given
that
project
a
facelift
which
you
will
see
at
Penn
Lee
plays

combination
of
townhouse
units

apartments,
and
you
will
see
some
of
the
remaining
structures
that
we
have
just
come
in.
Just
renovated
Finley
place
is
it's
a
mixture
of
market
rate
and
subsidized
units.
The
target
market
is
60%
of
the
median
income
and
we
will
have
phase
1
completed
this
spring
phase.

underway
and
we're
going
to
probably
do
38
units
of
senior
housing
is
going
to
be
there
as
well.
In
addition
to
mix
incomes.
When
we
talk
about
mixed
income
units,
we're
talking
about
a
combination
of
seniors
and
families,
I
can't
say
enough
about
Pam.
They
played
because
not
only
not
only
the
gateway
into
our
community,
it
sets
the
tone
for
what's
to
come
in
our
neighborhood,
so
I'm
real
pleased
to
see
that
development
underway
we
do
have
other
housing
development.

housing
isn't
the
only
concern
of
East
Liberty
Development
incorporated
the
eld
eye
is
also
instrumental
in
fostering
East
liberties
businesses
and
bringing
new
businesses
to
the
area.
The
big
success
story
is
the
new
Home
Depot
store
constructed
on
the
long
abandoned
former
Sears
site.

Of
the
things
about
home
T,
but
we
were
pleased,
was
that
they
were
very
open
to
a
lot
of
our
suggestions
as
far
designer
stores
they
really
bent
over
backwards
to
try
to
make
it
work.
So
we're
very
pleased
to
see
they've
done
that
the
masking
around
the
store
have
you've.
Seen
that
it's
just
beautiful,
not
to
mention
what's
happening
with
Mentos
Vince
Benton's
is
really
stunning.
I
mean
you
see
the
canopy
that
the
brick
I
mean.
It
really
looks
great
on
how
an
Avenue,
but
one
thing
I
want
to
say
about
a
home
deep.

It
may
be
a
really
true.the
form,
there's
the
employment
opportunity
they
provide
to
the
East
End
residence.
The
number
the
last
number
I've
seen
I
believe
was
166
employees
but
they've
staffed
from
this
area.
Other
thing
I,
like
about
the
story
that
they're
getting
their
stock
their
inventory
to
the
needs
of
our
communities.
We
have
so
many
older
houses,
large
houses,
you
know,
be
driven
to
somewhere
neighborhood.
You
see
a
lot
of
the
windows
that
are
stained
windows,
big
front
doors.

Addition
to
all
of
East
Liberty's
new
construction,
the
neighborhood
has
even
more
good
news.
Recently.
Workers
from
the
former
Nabisco
bakery
went
back
to
work
baking
crackers
for
the
Atlantic
baking.
The
new
beginning
in
East.
Liberty
is
worth
a
personal
look.
Why
not
take
a
drive
to
the
neighborhood
and
see
it
for
yourself
visit
the
shops
check
out
the
new
Home
Depot
and
stop
in
for
a
bite.
East
Liberty
is
open
for
business.
