Description
Cyndi's Sweet Shoppe owners Dick and Cynthia Rudisill talk about the origins of their downtown candy store and how its nostalgic charm has made it a local favorite for citizens and visitors alike.

C
B
B
This
is
the
second
marriage
for
both
dick
and
I,
and
we've
been
married
now
15
years
full
minute.
Ten
years.
B
So
I
started
out
in
the
hospital
and
I
worked
in
the
department
of
surgery
and
I
ended
up
working,
ENT
and
I
were
flawed,
a
head
and
neck
cancer
and
I
absolutely
love
my
job
and
dick
talked
about
that.
This
was
ours
together.
He
is
teasing
about
that.
This
candy
store,
if
you
wanna,
know
the
truth
about
it.
This
was
Dick
stream.
Every
time
the
dick
said,
we're
gonna
open
up
a
candy
store.
I
said
no,
no
double
no
trouble.
No
I
was
very
frightened
of
it.
B
C
From
I
kept
seeing
Aiken
and
where
to
retire
magazine,
okay,
and
we
really
thought
we
were
going
to
end
up
in
Hilton
Head,
and
we
thought
that
until
we
realized
the
level
of
traffic,
how
difficult
it
was
to
get
on
and
off
the
island,
and
it
just
so
happened.
The
next
day
we
were
planning
the
trip
taken
and
after
we'd
spent
a
day
looking
at
real
estate
there,
and
we
got
over
here,
had
lunch
at
in
the
alley.
B
That's
much
okay,
I
mean
I
still
had
young
children
at
home.
My
children
were
still,
they
were
in
high
school.
I
was
still
working,
so
was
look
different
for
me
right
very
different
and
I
had
them
removed.
I
had
never
really
traveled
dick
had
done
all
that,
so
it
was
a
little
bit
different
and
then,
when
it
became
time
again
dick
it
out
then
sold
his
business.
So
he
was
freshman
and
we
did
own
property
here.
B
We
own
property,
and
we
had
built
a
town
home
here
and
when
it
was
time
to
move
because,
like
okay,
I'm
ready
and
I'm
like
oh
no,
but
we
did
and
I
now
I
am
so
happy.
I
am
so
happy.
Is
it
different
from
being
up
north?
Yes,
we're
from
Syracuse
New
York,
not
from
the
city
of
New
York,
it's
very
different
and
it
first.
It
was
very
difficult
for
me
to
get
used
to
it
now.
I
wouldn't
change
it
for
a
million.
You.
A
Know
there
are,
even
though
there's
a
difference
in
latitude
longitude
that
there's
still
some
similarities
between
New
York
State
and
in
aiken.
I
spent
some
time
up
in
the
glenville
I.
Think
I'd
shared
that
with
both
of
you
before
up
in
the
Glens
Falls
area,
and
it's
just
a
quaint
little
town,
very
similar
in
a
lot
of
respects
to
the
things
that
we
appreciate
about
Aiken
but
as
as
you
know,
it's
we
do
get
four
seasons
here.
We.
A
A
You
found
that
real,
quick
that
we're
just
a
few
hours
from
the
ocean,
so
if
you're
that
few
hours
from
the
mountains
and
all
the
other
things
dick
is
kind
of
a
unique
store
that
you
you've.
Let
me
call
it
a
shop
because
it's
not
a
show,
it's
not
a
store.
It's
a
shop
and
I
say
that
in
the
most
flattering
terms,
because
it's
a
very
unique
place
to
me
and
I
fell
in
love
with
it.
B
B
A
B
Going
to
happen,
then
I
would
have
loved
him
named
it
after
my
mother,
who
had
died
right
before
we
had
came
here
but
I
couldn't
because
we
have
caroline's
right
across
the
street
from
us
and
I
would
never
do
that
to
another
shop.
So
then
it
came
dicks
like
less
I'm
in
Cindy's
I'm
like
absolutely
not
I
was
I.
Couldn't
bear
to
have
my
name
up
there.
So
I
went
to
bed
that
night
and
I
thought
about
it.
B
A
C
B
A
C
C
That
led
to
an
old
look
that
we
wanted.
It
just
had
that
turn-of-the-century.
Look
that
I
thought
tied
in
with
our
downtown
and
with
the
image
we
were
trying
to
portray
in
the
store
and-
and
that's
really
where
that
came
from
how
that
all
came
about.
We
wanted
that
look
more
than
anything
else.
An
old
look
now.
A
C
For
a
while,
I
think,
that's
what
ultimately
led
to
the
candy
store
when
we
lived
in
upstate
New
York,
our
basement,
we
had
it
converted
to
look
like
an
old-time
country
store,
okay
and
I
cindy,
and
I
collected
antique
advertising
for
many
years
and
we'd
go
all
over
the
place,
looking
for
it
and
auctions
and
estate
sales,
and
whenever
we
would
have
a
get-together
at
our
home
and
people
would
see
it
for
the
first
time,
they'd
always
say
the
same
thing.
This
reminds
me
when
I
was
a
kid
going
to
the
penny.
C
Candy
store
and
I
think
that
kind
of
planted
the
seed
a
little
bit
and
then,
when
we
came
here,
we
brought
most
of
the
collection
here
and
had
it
all
stuffed
in
one
room
and
I
kept
thinking.
Well,
wouldn't
it
be
neat
to
share
this
with
the
world,
just
let
everybody
have
a
chance
to
interact
with
it
and
see
it
and
that's
pretty
much
what
we
did
with
the
store.
Well,.
A
You've
done
a
great
job
because
it's
you
know
you
walk
through
there
and
you
know
the
first
time
I
went
through
I
said:
I
can't
make
up
my
mind
whether
I'm
in
a
candy
store
or
a
museum,
because
it
it
was
really
some
neat
stuff
and
those
of
us
who
I
collect
some
old
things
to
I
enjoy
them.
My
wife
does
to
me,
but
anyway
the
whole
concept
of
walking
in
there
you
walk
you.
You
take
people
back
to
a
good
place
in
a
good
time.
I
I
was
Cindy.
A
C
A
B
C
C
We
made
sure
we
have
those
items
and
we
wanted
to
have
all
the
old-time
candies
that
we
remembered
as
kids
from
the
little
wax
bottles.
Candy
bars
that
you
just
don't
see
anymore
and
that's
a
function
of
many
of
these
brands
have
disappeared,
and
the
other
thing
is
that
two
or
three
companies
control
the
majority
of
the
candy
business.
Today,
really.
A
C
Companies,
the
big
box
stores,
the
big
supermarket
chains
traditionally
carried
just
the
items
that
those
companies
make.
They
don't
go
carrying
a
lot
of
little
niche
where
our
strategy
was
just
the
opposite,
carry
all
the
niche
things
carry
the
things
you
couldn't
find
any
more
if
we
could
find
them
and
we
found
a
couple
of
wholesalers
who
would
service
this
area
for
us
who
carried
those
things.
So
it
became
fairly
easy
to
obtain
the
things
once
we
did
that
and
from
there
we
expanded
into
different
areas.
C
C
B
B
A
C
A
C
C
Is
basically
what
they're
called
from
in
the
Gulf
of
Mexico
from
Port
Arthur
Texas
over
to
Alabama
on
the
coast,
they're
called
a
Colleen,
and
the
southeast
on
the
coasts
are
called
a
praline
and
that
took
a
while
to
figure
out.
But
you
can
pretty
much
tell
where
somebody's
from
if
you
see
how
they
pronounce
it
now.
A
A
Me
I'm
a
fanatic,
my
daughter-in-law
and
I.
Both
we
I'll
buy
a
big
bag
and
we
share
them
and
jelly
bellies
are
just
a
very
unique
candy
and
there's
nothing
like
it,
though
they
have
a
very
unique
flavor
to
it.
And
if
you
try
other
jelly
beans,
they
just
don't
quite
measure
up
and
who
was
the
who
was
a
big
proponent
of
Jelly
Belly,
jelly
beans,
Oh
Ronald.
A
C
A
A
A
C
C
A
C
C
C
A
One
other
thing
that
I
wanted
to
just
touch
base
with
you
on
is
that
you
know
it's
part
of
your
marketing
strategy.
I
know,
I
have
one
that
everybody
has
a
little
bonus
card
and
I
have
mine,
which
is
for
my
jelly
belly
jelly
bean.
So
you
give
these
out
and
you
get
so
you
punch
out.
So
many,
and
you
know
you
get
some
rewards
for
it.
So
it's
a
good
customer
I
think
that's
a
very
nice
thing
to
do.
I
enjoy
that
especially
yeah,
especially
when
I
get
to
the
end
of
the
car.
A
That's
a
good
thing!
Joey,
it's
a
it's
an
awfully
good
thing,
one
one
of
the
things
that
you
know
makes
it's
so
attractive
for
you
is
it.
You
always
have
such
great
winter
displays
now.
Who
does
the
window
displays?
Miss
Cindy
yeah,
you
had
a
great
christmas
display.
I
saw
people
stopping
and
looking
at
it
all
there
in
the
holidays.
It
was
just
you.
B
Excited
I
was
that
I
won
the
best
window.
Decoration
I
know
that
sounds
corny.
Her
than
corny
I
was
like
a
little
kid
when
Catherine
came
in
and
gave
me
that
I
was
so
excited.
That's
because
every
time
I
hung
up
a
slight
little
snowflake
I
have
a
girl
that
works.
For
me
she
was
so
funny
cuz.
They
were
difficult
to
hang
off
because
of
everything
they
have
in
the
windows
in
the
room
that
I
had
to
work
with
and
she'd
go.
B
Oh
no
moving
a
little
fron
or
a
little
Becker
to
the
writer
to
left
I'd
be
like
seriously
so
it
was
bein
sinking,
but
I
have
once
I
start
getting
on
a
roll.
I
then
can
keep
on
building
from
it.
So
I
had
fun
making
it
I
had
really
really
fun
doing
it
and
I
enjoy.
When
the
kids
love
it
yeah,
it's
all
about
the
kids.
I
love
doing
it.
So
for.
B
B
B
A
He
came
in
with
with
another
gentleman
they
were
on
lunch,
break,
I
could
tell
and
they
were
walking
around
in
their
one-ups.
It
like
it
is
look
at
this
and
I
was
other
getting
my
jelly
beans
and
I
checked
out
and
I
was
just
talking
to
somebody
that
had
dropped
in
that
I
knew
and
it
this
gentleman
came
up.
He
had
an
armload
of
stuff
I,
don't
know
how
much
his
bill
was
better.
He
just
had
the
best
time
getting
things
that
and
he
was
telling
his
buddy
said.
I
can't
find
this
anywhere.
A
C
A
B
The
nicest
compliments
that
we
get
out
of
anyone
do
you
know
that
when
most
people
come
in
to
visit
people,
I'm
talking
all
people
that
live
here
and
when
they
have
out
of
town
guests,
we
are
always
on
the
list
of
places
to
visit
further
guests.
They
will
always
bring
their
guests
to
Cindy
sweet
shop.
What
a
compliment
it.
A
B
The
perm
for
superb
I,
what
what
I
don't
like
is
I
have
women
around
my
age
and
then
I
have
the
college.
Kids,
some
fortunate
well,
my
longest
time
girl
that
was
there
since
we
opened
up
the
store
she
unfortunately
left,
because
her
husband,
not
retired
Oh
Cathy,
was
a
sweetheart
everybody
loved
Cathy
Cathy
could
talk
to
anyone
about
anything,
make
everybody
feel
like
that.
They
were
home,
that
she
was
excellent
and
Cathy
just
left
herself
because
of
her
husband,
retiring
and
God
bless
and
wonderful,
wonderful
people
and
now
I
have
two
new
girls.
B
Well
no
case
come
back.
K
was
out
with
an
illness
and
k
is
becoming
healthier
and
healthier.
Every
day.
Her
hair
is
growing
back.
We
tease
her
because
we
love
her
with
her
short
hair
and
it's
all
nice
and
soft
we're
all
waiting
to
see.
What's
going
to
come
well
how
it's
gonna
come
in,
this
could
be
straight.
Is
it
gonna
be
curly?
Oh.
C
B
There's
nothing
that
Debbie
can't
do
doesn't
want
to
do.
She's
like
this
little
mini
closure
eyes.
One
moment
she's
over
doing
something
else.
She's
awesome
then
I
have
my
college
children
and
every
time
that
they
all
of
a
sudden,
grow
up
and
I'm
like
wait
a
minute.
You
really
want
to
leave
you
you
want
to
buy
the
candy
store.
Why
would
you
want
to
go
out
and
become
a
lawyer?
Why
would
you
want
to
do
that
nursing
degree?
You
don't
want
to
stay
here
and
owned
a
candy
store.
B
A
It's
apparent
when
people
come
in
that
they
feel
welcomed
in
the
store
and
the
you
know.
You
can
have
the
best
ingredients
in
anything,
but
if
you
don't
have
that
little
extra
touch,
mm-hmm.
C
A
B
C
B
And
I
want
the
same
with
everyone
from
the
little
child
that
comes
in
to
the
adult
as
I
tell
everyone
when
I
employ
them
that
we
have
to
remember
even
a
young
child.
How
do
you
ever
learn
respect?
You
literally
respect
a
given
respect
road,
so
we
have
to
give
a
young
child
just
as
much
respected,
nas's
attention,
even
if
there
are
only
spending
50,
Cent's
versus
an
adult
that
might
be
spending
ten
dollars.
It's
all
the
same,
and.
A
B
A
That's
a
good
thing,
one
thing
that
you
know
we
talked
about
akin
and
how
unique
aching
is,
and
you
have
incorporated
that
into
your
your
business.
I
know
you
have
these
very
unique
tens
that
that
you
have.
You
have
for
different
periods
of
time
during
the
year
that
you
can
fill
up
with
candy
you
can
fill
up
with
nuts
or
whatever
you
have
in
there.
Both.
C
B
Time
that
we
did
it,
we
have
a
wonderful
photographer
mark
hudson
for
anyone
that
doesn't
know
him,
he
is
the
most
kindest
gentlemen
did
I
met.
He
is
wonderful,
excellent,
excellent,
excellent
photographer
in
the
first
time
that
we
did
it
with
getting.
The
pictures
was
the
one
of
south
boundary
right
Christmastime
in
helping
to
be
that
bridgestone
was
doing
their
grand
opening,
so
they
had
a
lot
of
people
from
Japan
here
and
they
called
me
up
and
they're
like
we
got
to
get
a
gift
for
70
people.
A
lot
of
people
are
from
Japan.
B
B
C
B
A
Of
Aiken-
and
there
are
a
lot
of
very
unique
places
in
there
having
somebody
like
mark
to
be
able
to
capture
the
things
that
the
people
here,
if
you
could
ask
them
to
say
some
of
the
things
that
are
unique
about
akin.
You
have
captured
it
in
and
this
so
people
have
something
to
take
back
and
remember.
Nick.
A
A
C
B
B
First
thing:
we've
been
accepted
by
all
the
other
merchants,
that's
important
when
you're
in
a
small
community,
Lionel
Smith
was
one
of
our
biggest
proponents.
They
have
always
been
gracious
to
us
to
this.
I
was
down
today,
talkative
van.
They
always
help
us
there
they're
just
a
great
business
and
they
are
willing
to
help
any
small
business.
B
C
B
B
B
A
Thing
that
I
think
that
I
don't
want
to
not
mention
is
the
fact
that
you
have
embraced
the
community
and
you
have
inserted
yourself
and
your
family
in
the
community
you've.
You
know
through
the
chamber,
through
the
adda
ache
and
Downtown
Development
Association,
all
the
things
that
are
uniquely
akin
you've
been
a
part
of,
and
so
it's
it's
it's
just
a
good
marriage
for
Aiken
and
tell
us
just
one
last
thing:
how
long
