A
Welcome
to
aiken
this
week,
I'm
in
ruling
stone,
I'm
so
fortunate
to
be
joined
today
by
Susie,
Hayslip
and
Mike
Beckner,
who
are
both
members
of
our
recreation
commission
for
the
city
of
Aiken?
And
thank
you
both
for
being
here
and
welcome
where
the
beautiful
wrap
hatch
today,
what
a
great
setting
to
talk
about
recreation.
A
B
First
came
to
aiken
in
1994,
I
came
seasonally
with
resources
from
Maryland
and
I
had
a
background
prior
to
that,
and
during
that
time,
I
trained
horses
I
had
a
background.
Also
with
recreation.
I
worked
10
years
as
a
community
center
supervisor
for
the
county
of
Loudon,
which
is
a
large
County
in
Northern
Virginia.
B
So
when
I
first
came
to
Aiken,
it
was
just
for
the
winters,
but
I
noticed
the
Christmas
and
hope
linds,
and
I
went
to
that-
and
I
was
very
impressed
with
that
and
I
saw
the
improvement
of
Odell
weeks
with
the
additional
four
million
dollars
in
tennis
courts
due
to
the
local
option.
Sales
tax
and
I
was
very
impressed
with
that.
B
So
a
few
years
later,
when
I
made
Aiken
pretty
much
my
full-time
home
I
approached
Glen
Parker
to
see
how
I
could
get
involved
as
a
citizen,
because
I
relied
very
heavily
on
an
advisory
board
when
I
was
community
center
supervisor
and
they
were
instrumental
in
getting
a
lot
of
the
projects
done
and
had
lots
of
great
ideas
and
their
volunteerism
was
fantastic.
Well,
lo
and
behold,
I
found
out
the
city
didn't
have
a
commission,
so
Glenn
and
I.
You
know
had
discussions
for
quite
some
time
and
it
finally
came
to
fruition.
A
C
Well,
my
wife
and
I
retired
here
five
years
ago,
and
we
moved
also
from
the
Northern
Virginia
area
and
I
had
spent
the
previous
35
years
working
for
the
u.s.
government
as
a
lot
of
people
in
that
area
do
and
we
lived
overseas
quite
a
lot.
My
actual
profession
had
to
do
with
counterterrorism
and
counterintelligence.
I
was
a
special
agent
with
the
Diplomatic
Security
Service,
so
I
had
responsibility
for
security
at
embassies
overseas
and
consulates,
and
that
kept
us
moving
around
the
world
quite
a
bit.
C
C
My
blood
pressure
went
down
remarkably
and
I
actually
may
be
the
only
member
of
the
Commission
who's
fully
retired,
which
is
a
great
great
thing,
but
we've
been
here
about
five
years
and
we
had
learned
to
play
a
unique
sport
in
the
Northern
Virginia
area
with
an
unusual
name
is
pickleball
and
I
know
this
isn't
a
forum
for
pickleball.
But
it's
what
got
us
involved
locally
in
the
community?
C
Initially
I
approached
again
Glenn
Parker
and
asked
him
if
it
would
be
possible
for
my
wife
and
I
to
put
on
a
demonstration
and
get
involved
in
the
community,
maybe
with
a
new
sport,
and
he
was
very
open
and
welcoming,
as
he
is
naturally
anyway,
but
we
felt
encouraged
and
the
first
demonstration
we
did
it.
Odell
weeks,
jessica,
campbell,
welcomed
us
with
open
arms
as
well,
and
we
had
about
90
people
show
up
so
from
that.
C
Then
it's
sort
of
grew
topsy-turvy
and
we
got
more
and
more
involved
and
I
think
just
through
that
involvement
with
the
community
locally
I
was
identified,
possibly
as
being
somebody
who
might
contribute
to
the
Commission.
So
I
was
very
honored
when
Mayor
Kevin
are
nominated
me
to
be
on
the
Commission.
So
thank
you
well,.
A
Very
good
and
we're
going
to
get
back
to
pick
a
ball
a
little
bit
later
in
our
conversation,
because
I
think
that
it
is
such
a
neat
and
unique
event
to
talk
about
Suzie.
Let's,
let's
talk
a
little
bit
more
about
the
inception
of
the
Commission
and-
and
you
talked
about
how
that
was
a
conversation
and
you
coming
into
the
area,
and
you
saw
that
need
that.
Can
you
talk
a
little
bit,
especially
since
you've
been
on
the
commission
from
its
inception
about
the
role
of
the
Commission
and
maybe
how
its
evolved
over
the
years?
A
B
We're
not
really
considered
an
advisory
board,
but
we
are
considered
a
liaison
between
citizens
and
PRT
and
and
then
eventually
City
Council.
So
we
have
meetings
usually
every
month
we
take
a
couple
months
off
during
the
year
and
we,
you
know,
discuss
items
of
importance
to
the
parks,
recreation
department.
B
If
they
have
suggestions
we,
if
they
need
a
vote
on
something
we
you
know,
make
a
vote
on
something.
We
also
have
an
error
a
time
during
the
meeting
for
citizen
input
and
we
encourage
citizens
to
do
that.
We
want
to
be
very
approachable
and
maybe
having
this
program
will
make
a
little
more
visible
and
approachable.
If
anybody
has
concerns
or
requests
for
programs
or
suggestions,
anything
you
know
we
would
like
to
be
more
open
to
that.
So.
B
Usually
a
Tuesday
evening
and
we're
going
to
start,
we
suggested
at
the
last
meeting
to
rotate
among
the
different
venues
that
the
city
has.
The
city.
Has
lots
of
you
know
different
areas
parks.
We
have
Odell
weeks,
we
have
Smith
hazel.
We
currently
need
in
the
building
they
use
as
their
offices
right
at
the
corner
of
banks,
mill
and
pine
log.
A
B
If
they
didn't
have
a
conversation
with
one
of
the
members
and
Mike's
going
to
get
into,
who
are
the
members,
I
would
think
that
they
would
probably
call
the
office
and
talk
to
John,
Powell
or
jessica
campbell
and
asked
to
be
put
on
the
agenda.
Do
you
know
for
that?
But
we
do
strongly
encourage
that
and
we've
had
coaches
in
the
past
and
parents,
and
you
know
we
had
a
group
that
wanted
some
bocce
ball
courts
several
years
ago.
They
came
so
we
do
get
that.
B
Basically,
we
we're
available
all
the
time
now,
with
the
you
know,
email
and
and
the
ways
to
communicate.
If
there's
an
issue,
you
know
it's
brought
to
our
attention,
but
normally
we
discuss
everything
at
the
meetings
and
you
know
they'll
they'll,
bounce
ideas
off
of
us
for
future
projects
or
how
we'd
like
to
see
suggestions
for
the
budget.
We
do
that
too.
Very.
A
B
A
C
Each
member
of
the
Commission
is
nominated
and
selected
by
the
City
Council.
All
the
members
to
include
the
mayor
their
chosen
for
to
two-year
terms,
so
they
could
effectively
serve
for
at
least
four
years
and
I
think
that
that's
still
a
little
bit
open-ended
that
I
know
for
in
Susie's
case.
Certainly
we
don't
want
to
let
her
go
anywhere,
so
I'm
going
to
keep
keep
her
in
harness
as
it
were,
but
that
was
according
to
the
established
the
code
that
was
established
back
in
2003.
A
C
Think
when
the
when
the
Commission
was
first
started
and
the
seven
members
that
we
presently
have
include
mr.
Donnell
moody,
who's,
the
newest
member
and
we
have
Lori
comp,
Shaw,
Jason,
Rabin
Susan.
Of
course,
myself,
mrs.
Phyllis,
Sorensen
and
John
Wallace
are
the
seven
members
sitting
right
now.
We
do
have
one
youth
member
and
that's
a
different
category
and
that's
Caroline
Wolcott.
C
The
youth
members
are
actually
and
I
think
there's
a
space
for
for
youth
members.
We
only
have
the
one
right
now,
but
the
PRT
department
itself
selects
those
members.
So
at
any
given
meeting
we
could
have
11
plus
participants
so,
and
we
get
some
lively
conversations
going
and
some
debates
back
and
forth,
and
it's
a
very
good
environment,
very
proactive
and
very
productive,
I.
Think
and.
B
C
B
A
B
A
B
I
think
one
of
the
things
that
I
was
pretty
impassioned
about
was
having
a
dog
park
here,
because
I
traveled
in
different
areas
of
the
country
that
always
had
them.
You
know
the
city,
so
we
ended
up
the
City
Council
approved
a
certain
amount
of
money
to
go
towards
a
dog
park,
coinciding
with
that
time.
I
helped
facilitate
the
SPCA
purchasing
10
acres
on
Willow
Run
way.
C
B
A
A
C
B
C
B
A
A
C
B
A
C
C
We
participated
in
a
focus
group
and
gave
the
folks
from
clinical
instance
and
feedback,
and
it
was
really
exciting
to
be
part
of
that
that
whole
exercise
so
going
forward.
It
looks
like
things
are
moving
ahead
and
you
know
I
think
we'll
have
a
world-class
Park
out
there
before
too
long.
So
that's
that's
been
exciting.
The
most
literally
the
most
recent
thing
that
we've
been
involved
in
has
been
the
installation
of
a
born
learning
trail
in
conjunction
with
United
Way
and
the
first
one
was
installed
in
Graniteville
and
I.
Think
United
Way
approached.
A
It's
really
I.
A
Well,
my
god,
I
want
to
talk
a
little
bit
about
something
that
I
don't
know,
you're,
very
passionate
about
and
I.
Think
if
I'm
not
mistaken,
that
with
the
pickleball,
you
were
recognized
at
the
state
level
for
your
involvement,
for
what
what
pickleball
has
what
you've
done
for
pickleball
in
the
city
of
vacant
and
it's
something
that
you
get
a
lot
of
people
have
no
idea
what
pickleball
is
so
I'm,
hoping
that
maybe
you
will
share
with
us
a
little
pickleball,
101
and
and
what
that
means
well.
C
I
thought
you
would
never
ask
and
I'm
glad
you've
extended
the
program
to
two
hours,
no
I'd
be
happy
to,
but,
first
of
all,
let
me
make
sure
that
my
wife
Loretta
is
included.
She's
been
the
one
really
driving
all
this
I
just
do
as
I'm
told
like
most
husbands,
so
I
give
her
99%
of
the
credit,
but
she
was
certainly
honored
by
the
South
Carolina
state's
park,
recreation
and
tourism
board.
We
were
surprised
by
the
PRT
staff.
Here
we
were
invited
to
a
demonstration
of
pickleball
when
we
got
there.
C
C
Yeah,
it
was
first
started
on
Bainbridge
Island
in
1965
by
a
group
of
actually
a
couple
of
congressmen
who
resided
in
Washington
State.
They
came
home
from
a
morning
of
golf
to
a
group
of
bored
teenagers
laying
around
the
house
on
this
summer
afternoon,
and
the
kids
wanted
to
do
something.
So
the
fathers
found
an
old
badminton
net
and
they
had
a
bit
of
a
badminton
court
set
up
in
the
driveway
and
they
took
some
of
the
badminton
rackets
and
the
only
ball
they
could
find
was
a
was
a
wiffle
ball.
C
So
they
just
sort
of
fabricated,
this
sport
and
they
decided
early
on
they
better
drop
the
net
down.
It
was,
and
that
was
too
high
for
the
ball,
so
make
a
long
story
short
fast
forward,
basically
20
years
to
1985
and
that's
when
pickleball
sort
of
came
online
as
a
recognized
sport
and
it
had
changed
a
lot
in
the
interim
and
people
say
well.
C
Okay,
one
of
the
first
questions
is
why
the
name-
and
there
are
a
couple
of
a
couple
of
origins,
the
one
that
I
stick
with,
and
this
is
my
story
and
I
stickin
to
it.
This,
the
original
wiffle
ball,
belong
to
the
the
owners
of
the
properties
dog
pickles.
So
any
time
the
ball
was
hit
out
of
bounds.
Pickles
would
chase
her
ball,
so
the
name
evolved
from
that
now.
Yeah.
C
Know
how
accurate
that
is,
but
that's
basically
the
story
yeah
so
but
in
essence,
the
sport
is
a
combination
really
of
tennis
and
and
table
tennis
and
ping
pong.
The
court
is
about
one-third,
the
size
of
a
tennis
court.
So
it's
a
little
bit
easier
on
your
bodies,
for
those
of
us
were
a
little
older.
I
have
a
paddle
in
a
ball
I'll
show
you
in
a
second.
A
C
They're
smaller,
the
paddles
are
smaller
than
tennis
racket.
Much
lighter,
so
you
don't
get
the
transfer
of
energy
up
your
arm.
So
it's
easier
on
your
joints
and
that
sort
of
thing
it's
a
great
sport
for
for
actually
for
tennis
players
or
former
tennis
players
who
no
longer
play
you
can
just
ease
right
into
it,
but
it's
a
sport
for
all
age.
It's
two
children,
love
it
get
a
big
kick
out
of
it.
We
at
Odell
weeks
we're
very
fortunate
to
have
six
indoor
courts
we
play
year
round,
especially
on
rainy
days.
C
A
C
The
name
take
them
off
now.
You
know
a
lot
more
than
you
ever
wanted
to
have.
These
are
two
of
the
paddles
that
we
use.
This
is
a
typical
paddle
and
they're
made
of
composites
and
there
they
have
to
be
a
certain
size
and
and
composite
construction
they're
fairly
light,
as
you
can
see
that
one's
been
pretty
well
used.
That
was
my
first
handle
and
this
is
a
typical
ball
and
an
appropriate
color.
C
As
you
can
see-
and
this
is
another
example
of
a
paddle
which
I
have
to
give
Jeff
Mets
all
the
credit
in
the
world,
for
he
had
these
made
up
for
our
tournament.
We've
had
three
tournaments
in
aiken.
So
far,
the
first
one
was
three
years
ago
we
had
a
hundred,
and
ten
people
show
up
from
ten
different
states
in
one
foreign
country,
scotland,
of
all
places
the
previous
or
the
subsequent
year.
A
C
C
Were
given
as
door
prizes
at
a
social
that
we
have
before
the
tournament,
so
I
I,
don't
know
how
this
happened,
but
my
name
was
the
very
first
name
drawn
and,
of
course,
the
crowd
immediately
assume
that
the
fix
was
in
but
I
yeah
I'm
really
tickle
to
have
this
night.
This
is
my
primary
paddle.
Now
this
is
what
I
play
with.
C
People
want
to
come
and
play
first
of
all,
I'd
say
you
know
check
with
Odelle
weeks,
because
our
times
change
depending
upon
how
available
the
courts
are.
But
we
have
at
least
four
I
think
there
are
more
panels
now
available
to
check
out
at
the
desk
at
Odile
weeks
and
balls
are
provided
by
parks
and
recreations.
C
Are
drop
in
times
where
we've
lost
some
of
our
night
and
weekend
hours
to
basketball,
which
is
you
know
the
season
right
now,
which
is
understandable.
So
working
people
have
find
a
little
bit
more
difficult
to
play
just
because
of
the
hour
change,
but
we'll
get
back
some
after
working
hours
times
soon
enough,
but
to
get
to
the
extent
the
pickle
ball
is
caught
on
locally.
Here
there
are
now
courts
at
least
two
courts
at
the
green
boundary
club
on
their
tennis
court.
C
There
are
multiple
courts
in
woodside
and
at
the
Woodside
reserve
club
they've
actually
built
three
purpose-built
pickleball
courts,
the
only
ones
in
aiken
that
I'm
aware
of
so
that's
really
exciting.
So
there's
a
group
that
plays
there
and
then
anybody
who
wants
to
play
can
play
it.
Of
course,
a
todo
weeks
and
I
would
encourage
anybody,
even
if
they
think
that
they're,
not
that
will
coordinated
or
don't
have
a
sports
background.
C
Doubles
it
you
can
play
singles,
but
that's
way
too
fast.
Okay,
we
have
some
younger
people
who
like
to
play
singles,
but
it's
primarily
doubles,
but,
as
I
mentioned
it's
very
similar
to
to
tennis
in
its
structure,
because
the
ball
is
harder
than
a
tennis
ball.
It
comes
off
the
paddle,
since
it's
a
hard
paddle,
maybe
pretty
fast
and
we're
very,
very
small
court.
So
they
had
to
slow
the
game
down
a
little
bit
and
that
you
do
that
by
serving
under
hand
which
is
again
easier
from
some.
C
C
Is
is
unique?
It's
you
score.
You
can
only
win
a
point
off
your
serve.
It's
scored
much
like
volleyball
used
to
be
scored
and
you
normally
a
game
is
played
to
11
and
went
by
two
points
so,
but
their
variations
on
that
in
tournaments
around
robbing
plays
just
like
anything
else,
but
there's
a
very
active
organization.
Now
the
US
pickleball
Association
and
my
wife,
Laura
and
I
are
ambassadors
for
that
organization
and
we
go
around
the
CSRA
doing
demonstrations
and
we've
been
to
Augusta
McCormick
Columbia
lot
of
places
around
my.
C
A
Well
and
we've
seen
it
grow
very
fast
here
naked
and
we
thank
you
so
much
for
bringing
this
wonderful
sport
to
to
our
town
and
just
another
thing
that
makes
our
great
town
a
unique
place
to
be
so
as
we're
closing
today.
Is
there
anything
else
that
y'all
would
like
to
share
about
the
Recreation
Commission
will.
A
B
A
We
hope
to
see
all
of
you
at
oaklands
and
taking
advantage
of
our
pickleball
opportunities
and
if
you
have
any
questions
or
would
like
some
further
information
about
our
Recreation
Commission
police
feel
free
to
get
in
touch
with
any
of
the
members
or
the
staff
at
the
city
of
vacant.
Prt
thanks.
So
much
for
being
here,
we'll
see
you
next
time.
Breaking
this
week.
