A
B
I
worked
as
a
paramedic
before
coming
here.
I've
volunteered
as
a
firefighter
before,
but
my
full-time
employment
was
as
a
paramedic
with
a
hospital-based
ambulance
service.
I
wanted
a
job
that
was
different,
something
where
I
could
come
to
work
every
day
and
and
do
something
different
do
something
exciting.
I
come
to
work
with
a
bunch
of
people
that
are
all
here
for
one
reason
and
that's
to
be
the
best
firefighters
they
can.
They
want
to
serve
the
public.
B
C
Used
to
work
at
an
oil
refinery
in
los
angeles,
california,
I
started
getting
training
at
the
refinery
because
everything
in
a
refinery
is
potentially
a
fire.
I
got
training
there
and
liked
it
a
lot
and
decided
to
pursue
a
career
directly
in
full-time
firefighting
versus
doing
it
kind
of
part-time.
At
the
refinery.
D
I
always
wanted
to
be
a
firefighter
ever
since
I
was
a
little
kid
that
was
something
I
grew
up
around
firefighters,
we
had
friends
of
our
family
that
were
volunteer.
Firefighters
in
my
hometown
and
we'd,
see
them
leave
on
calls
and
just
thought
that
was
the
coolest
thing
for
them
to
go
on
fire
calls
and
actually
got
to
go
to
a
couple
of
the
fires
that
they're
at
so
ever
since
I
was
a
little
kid.
I
want
to
be
a
firefighter.
D
It
wasn't
until
my
freshman
year
of
college
at
iowa
state
that
I
realized
that
you
could
actually
pursue
being
a
firefighter
as
a
career.
It
wasn't
you
didn't,
have
to
be
a
volunteer.
I
just
assumed
I
would
get
into
engineering
and
be
a
volunteer
firefighter
somewhere
until
I
found
out
you
can
actually
make
a
career
out
of
being
a
firefighter.
My.
E
Story
is
a
little
bit
different
that
most
people
when
they
are
younger,
they
want
to
be
a
firefighter
when
they
grow
up,
and
I
wanted
to
be
an
interior
designer.
So
I
came
to
ames.
I
went
to
iowa
state
and
got
my
degree
in
interior
design,
but
while
I
was
here,
I
worked
at
a
bar
and
restaurant
and
just
fell
in
love
with
the
town
and
the
people
that
I
got
to
know.
While
I
was
here
so
I
wanted
to
find
a
way
to
stay
in
ames
and
still
have
a
wonderful
career.

A
Ames
is
a
culturally
diverse
community
with
over
60
000
citizens
representing
more
than
100
nationalities
within
a
25
square
mile
response
area.
This
dense
population,
including
more
than
thirty
three
thousand
iowa
state
university
students,
creates
a
busy
atmosphere
for
the
firefighters
of
ames.
Of
the
approximately
four
thousand
incidents
the
fire
department
responds
to
annually.
The
types
of
calls
vary
widely.
Firefighters
routinely
respond
to
fires,
medical
emergencies
and
vehicle
accidents.
On
occasion,
firefighters
may
even
find
themselves
engaged
in
water
rescues,
hazardous
material
spills
and
explosions.

The
life
of
a
firefighter
is
not
all
life
and
death
emergencies.
Ames
firefighters
also
provide
other
various
non-emergency
services,
including
performing
station
tours
apparatus,
equipment
and
facility
maintenance,
pre-planning
structures
throughout
ames,
participating
in
training
and
continuing
education
and
attending
