Hey kids, thanks for joining us today on the Internet we're here at fire station I'm, lieutenant joined with firefighter landy firefighter Lane he's driving engine 2 today and he's gonna show us all about it. Every single compartment and everything there is to need to know. What do you say? Are you ready there's lots of fun stuff up here? What is what is all this stuff here? What does that? Do it? Those.

People out of the way how about what's this, what's this do well.

That's our front bumper line, it's a pre connect. We call it the front upper line and it's a hundred twenty-five feet of hose that we can take off really easily and quickly and put on a car fire or a dumpster fire. Well, how I mean is I'm.

A

Using quite a bit, that's pretty easy. So on top here, there's lots of lights: where are the lights for those are to.

Warn people to pull over get out of the way this light in front here. It actually is a big spotlight. There's another light that flashes in it. It makes sure that the traffic lights turn green. So we have the right of way. Okay, how.

Big silver things that stick out in front.

Those are mirrors that we can see behind us easy. Oh.

Do you, like those mirrors I, do.

Look they're really nice they're.

Newly designed a lot of us I ride, buses have them cool there. There, a good design that they like that's.

That's pretty special, so why is it all shiny like this? What is the sport? Well.

Some of its were looks, but some of it is for reflectivity maybe easier to see Oh dark.

Yeah makes it easier to see yeah okay, how.

This is a wrench. We use this for hooking up coupling hoses and uncoupling codes. This is same thing, but just for for the large diameter hose. What's.

That, what's back here, what's on all this stuff, these.

Are our what we call our cross? Ladies.

There's 200.

Feet, 200 feet, 150 feet: these are inch and three-quarter, and this is two and a half, so it just carries a little bit more water, okay,.

So those are hose lines, so then you can just take them and go and then they're.

All set up and ready to roll they're considered free, connects also so they're already hooked up. We just the driver bowls lever there.

That's pretty neat yeah. What's this behind you, what's that big thing.

So that keeps it from getting smoky inside the sale.

Okay, now, why? Why is that there? What's what's with the flag and the eagle I'm.

Not I'm, not sure I think think that was just to make it look. I think the manufacturer put that there.

That's very patriotic, would you say yes, what's this red light up there, for what does that do well,.

That's when we get the emergency master switch inside that that is. This goes off along with this they're all flashing lights and they alert people that were coming, maybe to move out of the way. What.

Is this for what is this? Do and.

This is a this is a big spotlight and it it can extend and turn when you turn the generator on there's a switch over on the driver's side and you flip the switch on, and it gives us lots of light, especially those work really good at night when we're on a fire or an accident see they provide a lot of light like.

A big flashlight, huh yes, exactly well, what's what's behind door number one well on here: let's take a look, Wow lots of stuff all.

Kinds of stuff.

You do with these those we would maybe use on a car accident to help stabilize the car to keep it from moving. If it moves, it may hurt the patient or it may hurt a firefighter Oh. It looked like big blocks, yeah.

You never stack them up and build castles with them. Oh no! We don't do that. Oh my god,.

These these here are, we call them stair steps. These would possibly go underneath a car, and then we use these wedges.

To slide underneath to make things fit a little bit better, keep it snug make it so the car does not move.

Like kind of special yeah, those are traffic tones, those worked real good for traffic control. They.

Night they they light up, there's a light as a switch on the under underside and they're very visible at night. There's.

Lots of things: what are you keeping these bags yeah.

All different kinds of tools- these are still for car accidents, yep tools for maybe cutting a battery cable.

Taking the battery terminal off.

Glow sticks, we don't have dance parties, no gloves more for safety than anything and a wrench. This can be used for for lots of different things. There's a little pointy metal thing here that can break a window if needs be. It looks like the same wrench we.

Saw over there Oh.

Yep yep it could be used for that. For that purpose, also, there's a little cutter right here that you could use to cut a seatbelt if you needed to help get somebody out lots of different uses. Well,.

There's lots of other stuff, and you know what does this go to? This looks like ice on big long cord. That's.

Just that's hooked to our generator. We can that's just like a big extension cord. We can take that we get a couple hundred feet of cord and we can take it wherever we want. We can plug our tool into it or could.

We plug the lantern that work yeah. That's.

That's exactly right. It's.

All plug these lights in.

Tools this, this is all tool, deadblow hammer, a big sledgehammer, an axe. This is actually I'll pick head axe.

These are what we just. We just call these pigtails they're just adapters to go from different different.

We call this a Clemens hook. This is a Pike pole. This is a Z tool and a crowbar lots of different uses.

Well, like the Pike pole, we would maybe use it for pulling drywall down. In a say, we have a fire, we were trying to make some space available or we're trying to investigate to see if there's a fire up above you.

Use that to pull the wall.

Apart, move that, yes, exactly who's that pull the ceiling down the wall apart this this could come and suck the same. What's.

This thing this thing looks like a big pincher yeah.

That's big bolt cutters. What.

Does it cut if.

You use that for cutting padlocks, maybe there's.

A couple --tz-- it does it good yeah? Well, what are you keeping these things here? Okay? Well, these.

Are spare oxygen solvers we'll look the tied together? Why do you tie them together well see here so that we can carry multiple at a time? Oh.

I see their light cuz.

I'm really strong, they're, they're they're, very heavy.

We have all kinds of spares those change, our Oh two cylinders out on scene. If we, if we go through one, maybe on fire or something or we're doing training, we can, we can change them out real fast, and then we have compressors at the station that we can refill these when we get back so.

These go in the firefighter halves, they have special backpacks and these go in the special backpacks yeah, so they can breathe clean air and not the smoke and the dirty air yep.

Then we hook hook these special backpacks up to a mask and then we can breathe cool.

I have seen one of these before does this do the same thing as the others.

Yes, it does Wow just another warning light, there's lots of them and look.

There's another big tire: hoping is this one about.

The same it looks like there's two of them there. It's.

This engine that we call it is very, it's very heavy. It only has one axis so there are, there are duals or two tires on each side. That kind of help carry that weight, because it's very.

Is a big? We call this our little giant for obvious reason.

And this maybe gets we can use this for lots of different reasons, but maybe we need to get in somebody's attic to investigate something. How.

Do we use it well.

You push those two boxes and then there's a few.

This so you can make it taller or shorter yep or shorter.

And it works really well for that notice. How clean it is we clean our ladders? That's a very clean ladder. Yep we clean our life.

Things: that's why it why it moves really well, how.

About the rest of this stuff, what is all this stuff where well.

That's what is interesting and this this is what we call a crown monitor and we hook a two-and-a-half inch hose to that. And then we put either this or this these nozzles on the end of it, and we can spray a lot of water and a little bit of time and these they.

Have little feet on them and they're supposed to kind of dig.

B

Into the ground to keep it from moving because it's a lot of water pressure and it wants to move that like.

This yep- and it looks like these- are different sizes, come on yep, deep spray, your friends with these you.

Could but it would probably hurt it's a lot of water and a lot of pressure. How.

Much water is it.

I think this is would probably be about 350 gallons, a minute you could potentially put out if we had the right amount of water coming into the pump. Well, how many gallons are in a bathtub in a.

Bathtub I don't know, maybe.

Maybe 50 Oh.

So that's like five bathtubs in a minute, yeah.

Could be I'm really good at math? There's some other stuff in here too I don't know what to do is deal.

Here's a backpack yep we have some holes in. It looks like that.

Is an air hose that we can hook up to the engine if the compressor is running and we can say we're in a really dusty environment and we can below the dust of all the insulation off of us, they come out or or we're in a hazardous material scene. We can heat decontaminate. So this here is a strainer. This gets hooked up to a hard suction line.

We don't use this very often.

B

But that is to keep. We would fill a huge bathtub and put this off the end of our hard suction, and this sits on the bottom to keep it from picking up all the junk all the scene there's rocks or dirt or something bad. No, we don't use this very often do it. No, we don't know.

Why don't use it very often well.

Because we have, we don't need this because we have hydrants in the city of Ames. Oh the the only time that we use that we in the country and we were assisting a neighboring department and they didn't have hydrants. They would bring a big tender truck and they fill a big tank. That's when we would use that would suck out of that.

We do not use it very often, just because it's in the city of Ames, we have a lot of hydrants, we don't need them. We.

Need well, this looks very fancy. What does this say says? Dial.

Nine-One-One, why do you dial nine-one-one? Well, if you have an emergency like what? Maybe you see smoke coming from your neighbor's house or maybe from your house? Oh yeah, or maybe.

Hurt or was really sick.

Yeah, if your mother or father or brother or sister, got hurt, they fell off a ladder, they were sick and couldn't respond to you. Then then you would call that home. Okay, that's good to know.

Yeah and then is there something behind here? Oh well, you all that stuff lots of stuff man. What is it all.

These are, these are fans. These are positive pressure fans, one is one, is powered by gas and one is electric they're very handy. We use them a lot. What are we use them for? It.

A lot of times we use them to get rid of smoke in somebody's house, but with whether it be from cooking or somebody had a small fire in our kitchen. So.

You can put the fire out and we want to give her the smoke. Yes, we open the windows and then we just turn the knob here to yell it spins yep.

We flip the switch on or plug it in and flip the switch on, and this controls how fast it goes that.

Electric one is really auntie cool.

Whoa, this looks pretty fancy. What's this thing here, yeah.

This is a chainsaw. What.

Are you use a chainsaw.

For well for cutting storm debris or you could use it, you could use it. Maybe a car accident this. This has a very special blade on it, with carbide tips on the on the chain. It's called a bullet chain. It's supposed to supposed to cut Madeline.

There's a cut wood, it will there's a cut metal yep.

It will of concrete, not concrete. Oh.

Yeah, what's that, for that, you got your hand on it. So.

Now that comes off, that's just to protect the chain in and probably the the user to it, just kind of keeps it keeps are protected while we're storing it. What's.

That's a special premix that we use. We put this in our small engines and it's got the gas and the oil already mixed. So then we just have to dump it right into the saw. How.

About these drugs, it's a old right. What's.

In here we use those for oh, we have a car accident and there's oil and antifreeze all over the place. We use those soak up all the liquids to keep it from going down. The storm sewer running down the street.

Is it like if a kid gets sick and they puke on the floor when they're in the cafeteria at school and the janitor comes, and they have to throw this stuff down? Oh similar.

More yeah, okay I'll have to get someone to clean that up for us later. What else? Well.

We have a generator- these are more. This is a it's a toolbox to basically work on our work on our fans or work on our chainsaw Lord gasps. This is an air chisel and this is a torch. Whatever.

You use the torch part.

So there's lots of tools and oil dry and oh look at that. Yeah.

Are those more lights more.

Lights, emergency lights: these are more spotlights that run off the generator. You turn the generator on and you flip a switch and those.

And they're very, very bright.

Like a giant flashlight yep.

So what is this here in.

Is a ladder house ever.

Use this to get up to the top. There are some more compartments up top with a lot of extra stuff in them, but you.

Then we can climb up to the top a lot easier and safer.

What's in that, is this a little compartment right there yeah this.

Compartment has a little tiny ladder in it. We call our Matic ladder it folds up, so we can pull it up and let's take.

What were you calling this? That's an attic ladder.

Because it's its little narrow and it can fold up and get into when it even when you unfold it, it's. How do you climb.

Much hoses are well, there should be 800 or 600 foot here, 600 tripe there should be 800 foot here, 800 foot yeah there should be 300 and 250, and then we have some inch and a half and and two and.

Inch, these are like pre-made.

That we can carry in to what would we use that for? Oh, we could use them for just extending a hose line or we could take them in to a high-rise like.

An apartment building and maybe.

An apartment building or a dormitory.

Gated wise on them and.

What does that do? Well, we could, if we.

Had a two and a half.

Inch hole was coming in here, we could get bring water to here and we have one hose going. One way we can shut this valve and we can add hose later so.

Doesn't make it so you can take a big hose and split it into two smaller.

Yes, sir: well, that's pretty neat.

Okay, look, there's another light blue light, yeah.

Another blue light another emergency light. What.

Are these here a lot.

Of them whatever they are, that is a directional arrow, so we have a button up front that we push and we can make this aerial go this way. We can make the arrow go this way or we can make it flash side to side. huh Oh.

Just to hopefully help cars move one way or the other. How.

About this one: what's in here, oh there's, ladders in there, oh look at those ladders yeah! That's all! Are these ladders well.

This big ones 24 foot, this one- is a this one's a roof ladder. We call it a roof ladder. It's got big big hooks on it. This would this could maybe go over the peak of the roof. Alright,.

And we clean these every Thursday also.

There's some really clean ladders. Yep yeah now looks like there's one more in here. Yes, there are this. This.

Is for our sprinkler bucket, we drain water with it and there's some other tools to spare to Lou. You.

Don't use it now, so that's where they go. Oh, hey! Look at this! It's like another compartment! There's lots of compartments here! Well that so.

These this is our bag.

This is a gate valve we can. We can put this on the hydrant and close the close the valve so that we can add another line later if we needed to.

Adapter to go from stores to threads or.

This is to go from stores to two and a half.

This the hose you hook to the hydrant yeah, those are what we call shorties and they're like 30 foot long, and we could, if we're close enough to a fire hydrant, we can use these instead of pulling off a big section. These are a lot easier to handle because they get really really heavy they're, really heavy. When you get watering, why.

Are they so heavy well.

Because because water is heavy, how.

Much does water weight, I.

Believe about 8 pounds per gallon, mmm so that's quite a bit.

Do firefighters do fire trucks get tickets for speeding from the police officers? No.

But the police officer would prefer if we drove in a safe man. Oh that's.

These, this is all reflective, so this is so that any vehicle from behind can see us were very well we're.

That's an outlet and that works when you turn our generator on. We can plug into that and we have that's what we have those pigtails that I've told you about. Okay, you plug into that, and then we can run tools or a light or something off the back.

Someone on our crew takes that with on a fire alarm call just in case it's a real fire. I.

Might come and put it out with the water: let's get water cam. You.

Know what are these red ones? Okay, so there's an ABC extinguisher. This is more like a powdery substance and then this is a carbon dioxide extinguishers.

There's another big fan.

We don't use it all that often see this is pretty boring stuff just howls. We carry some rope with us. Well, you carry the role for.

In case we have a nice rescue or a water rescue. This is 300 feet of hose that we sorry of the rope of rope that we can. We can use to retrieve a victim if needed. What's.

In these bags here.

Oh there's some mast in there. No.

Buddy we're masks for those.

We have their their filters and masks for to keep the bad stuff out. There's batteries and different literature playing.

A backpack yep.

Really handy, if you want to carry 24 mass with you, you could just throw it on back. That's true, true yeah! This.

Is sunscreen in here? Yes, it is actually yeah I believe it is. That's.

Good, what are you use? Sunscreen for.

Well, if we're having, if we have to be outside for a long period of time, maybe in the summer yeah, these are like our support boxes sold. Okay,.

You use those after you go to the beach, then you dry off, no.

We we could I guess, but these are more maybe to dry off a tool or to try. Maybe the sweat off of myself or someone else is after we've been working really hard. What's.

This guy, for this looks kind of fun,.

That's our measuring wheel to.

Measure can we measure these wheels with it, but good didn't know, help all the world earlier. So it's true, we.

Would more, we would probably use that more for if we did a like a pre planner inspection, if we needed to know how big a building was or maybe when we, when we do training, we use it to measure off 50 foot or 100 feet so that we know how far we need to carry the whole is before we turn a corner.

Those look like buckets are those buckets and.

That is part of our that- and this is part of our sprinkler bucket- is kind of an invention by a crew years ago, and it's more for if a sprinkler is going off in a building.

We have an extended pole that we can. We can put this on top of, and we can.

Does it help if those water all over from a broken sprinkler, yeah.

We can, we can help, divert the water, maybe out a window or somewhere, so we're not doing so much damage. That's.

Pretty neat yeah.

Is where we put diesel fuel oil? Oh, we probably should put some diesel fuel in today. Okay,.

So we go to the gas station and then we put diesel fuel in it. Yep! Okay, oh this one here is there stuff in here yeah.

So we carry lifejackets in case we were to have to do a water rescue or an ice water rescue, and these would be more for an officer or someone. That's standing on shore so that they're, safe, I feel safe yeah.

Don't want you to fall in the water? Oh there's another.

And hit your head and not be able to swimmers I like feel safe, yep.

So you got a life jackets, yep there's we got towels, we got sunscreen, but we're not going to the beach, no okay and then what's it missing. This.

Here, a long bag yep there's a couple hundred feet of rope, there's more rope there a couple hundred feet.

This is this: is our rip pack, our Rapid Intervention Team.

That's an SCBA or a cylinder, and we can. We can take that into a to a less than ideal atmosphere. We call it an IPL, a challenge and it's.

Idlh mean that.

Means immediately dangerous to life and health, that's fun acronym and we can say we have a firefighter, that's hurt or can't breathe very well or stuck. We can take this in and we can hook so.

Cylinder in into their.

Air cylinder this was like the special backpack yeah.

Then this is the match, goes on yep. We.

Can put that mask on them or.

Right into their their pack and then they will automatically have this air. That's pretty fancy yep.

This looks like this another bagger, oh yeah,.

That's a that's a like I think these were 30 feet of rope and these are throw bags. So maybe somebody is close enough to shore. They were out messing around on the ice and they fell in, but they're not very far out. You could throw this bag to them and see if they can help rescue themselves if they can sell for us.

Well, that's morning, stuff: is there anything else to see there's.

So safe after learning about all this stuff with you and all this great equipment, is there anything else in here? We come right about.

This is what we call a pump compartment. Why do you call the pump compartment? Well for obvious reasons, because this is the pump, this normal run the ball, and then there is America lots.

Of things tools, and that we got some of.

These things, not what are these guys do like there's double mail, double females, they're, just adaptors or different ways to hook hose up. This is a store's connector, so this goes from the hydrant. What's this guy, that is a bull ring. We call it a bull ring tool and it has lots of different uses. Are.

They really strong they're, pretty strong and.

B

You think anyone.

Could ever break one of these? It's one person.

A

Good that guy must be really strong, yeah.

B

But, but they are, you can use it to this here. Grips this part here. This part here would grip the hose you can use it to help.

Pull the hose along, it's.

Got different: you can use this to turn.

A gas bomb off.

Maybe you can use this too for coupling and uncoupling hoses and then.

What do you call this.

That is an ancient 3/4 adjustable toggle. What.

Is this thing so.

You can you can adjust the stream from a straight stream to a more fog pattern stream, like.

Your shower and at home yeah.

A

Of okay, you put on massage sunny yeah.

And this is a 75 psi nozzle, which means you need 75 psi to get the optimal usage out of this nozzle in.

One minute: how many gallons can that flow.

150 gallon a minute: that's.

Like three bathtubs on the meadow.

That's how they look, that's how they stay in there, so they don't fall over.

What do you use that, for um this.

B

Could be used for many different things, hidden things, but over here I would use it if, for some reason, we need to take this skate valve off this large diameter intake off. There are some ears on this right here. It works really good to either tighten it up or take it off. Oh about half, because it's on there really tight.

We got some switches on it, it looks like yeah.

That is the remote control for our neck gun, which is on top. You can't see it because it sits all the way down. Those.

Are like a big square crown yeah.

B

It's a big squirt gun- and this is the this- is the remote for this. This raises it up and down moves it left to right and changes through this fog stream to a straight stream. It's kind of like a it's, a big video game controller.

Looks really complicated, there's a lot of levers, knobs.

Makes a lot of noise? That's.

Right, that's the.

Primer and I've had to use that before. If.

One of these got here well.

B

Those are, it is, those are just drain valves they released. It looks like it's draining yeah.

Like sometimes in the winter, we have to repose to exercise these, so they don't get a little bit stiff in the winter. Sometimes we'll drain the excess water out so that we don't we have to sit outside for a long time. We don't freeze up a line or something, but this controls all of our cross legs. When you turn this the pump on in the cab, you turn your tank to pump valve on and you can. By pulling this lever, you can get water to the front bumper line.

These levers here control these cross legs here. So you want to make sure that you pull the line completely off before you pull that lever or the hose bundle getting stuck in there. Just.
