A
A
very
good
evening
to
everyone
who
is
watching
this
very
special
broadcast
of
the
ames
municipal
band,
I'm
john
bernett
larkins,
I'm
the
announcer
of
the
band
and
on
behalf
of
the
band
and
director
dr
michael
golimo.
We
are
very
pleased
to
present
tonight's
live
broadcast,
although
our
2020
season
has
been
canceled
at
banshaw
park.
Due
to
the
coronavirus,
we
are
presenting
four
very
special
broadcasts
to
help
bring
our
music
into
your
homes
and
into
your
hearts,
we're
calling
it
muni
band
and
more
virtual
july
concerts.
A
This
is
the
third
of
four
thursday
broadcasts
where
we
are
presenting
live
performances
of
different
musical
ensembles
mixed
with
highlight
clips
of
some
favorite
performances
from
the
ames
municipal
band.
Our
intent
with
these
broadcasts
is
to
sustain
the
season
of
the
band
and
again
to
provide
music
for
the
community.

A
Jody
gobel
is
a
vocal
coach,
an
accompanist
and
performs
quite
often
with
simon
estes
julie,
sturm,
teaches
music
theory
at
iowa
state
and
is
also
the
principal
cellist.
With
the
des
moines
symphony
and
jonathan
sturm
teaches
music
history
at
iowa
state
and
served
this
past
year
as
president
of
isu's
faculty
senate.
He
is
also
the
concert
master
with
the
des
moines
symphony.
D
We're
going
to
begin
our
solo
part
of
the
program
this
evening
with
a
piece
that
johannes
brahms,
composed
in
1853
as
a
birthday
present
for
his
friend,
the
very
great
violinist
from
that
time
period,
whose
name
was
joseph
joachim,
and
this
present
was
a
devised
idea
by
a
bunch
of
composers.
They
all
decided
we'll
get
together
and
we'll
each
compose
a
separate
movement
for
this
violinist
joachim
and
give
it
to
him
in
a
birthday
basket
with
maybe
some
champagne
and
something
you
know.
D
Good
german
cheese
or
something
like
that
and
so
brahms
composed
this
movement
and
the
the
idea
was
that
joseph
joachim
had
a
phrase
that
he
sort
of
liked
to
say
about
himself.
It
was
a
german
phrase
and
it
was
fry
albert
einsan.
I
am
free,
but
alone,
and
so
they
they
had
to
put
the
f
and
the
a
and
the
e
for
the
first
letters
of
each
of
the
fry
auber
einsan
into
the
their
individual
movements.
So
this
is
known
in
the
musical
community
as
the
fae
sonata
movement
by
johannes.

D
Jody
and
I,
and
a
little
later
on,
we'll
be
joined
by
my
wife,
julie,
dr
julie,
sturm,
we're
so
happy
and
privileged
to
be
asked
to
be
a
part
of
this
muni
band
and
more
concerts
in
the
in
the
absence
of
the
real
concerts
that
we've
always
enjoyed
out
of
the
band
shell
each
summer.
We
hope
that
these
provide
you
with
a
sense
of
joy,
a
sense
of
beauty
and
the
the
truly
healing,
but
also
passionate
power
of
music.
That
really,
we
think
nothing
else
comes
close
to.
D
So
we
hope
that
that
is
part
of
your
summer
and
that
we
are
giving
you
some
pleasure
through
our
pieces
this
summer.
This
next
piece
jody
and
I
are
going
to
play-
is
called
legend
and
it's
a
french
for
legend
and,
as
you
might
imagine
a
legend,
it's
got
a
kind
of
a
story
to
it,
not
on
any
official
story.
D
It's
by
the
polish
composer
vinovsky,
who
is
a
virtuoso
violinist
in
the
late
19th
century,
so
1870s
kind
of
time
period,
and
it
starts
off
very
soft
and
and
kind
of
mysterious
and
then
goes
to
a
middle
section.
That
builds
to
a
really
powerful
romantic
climax,
and
it
goes
back
to
that
soft
and
mysterious
section
and
ends
very,
very
softly
and
mysteriously
and
will
leave
you
to
decide
whether
it's
a
love
story
or
a
love
story
gone
wrong
or
some
other
kind
of
story
that
you
devise
for
vaniowski's
legend.

Our
next
piece
is
banjo
and
fiddle
by
american
composer,
william
kroll.
Now,
if
you've
gone
back
and
listened
to
some
of
these
pieces,
that
we've
done
so
far,
you'll
hear
many
of
them
are
in
sort
of
an
aba
form,
there's
an
opening
and
then
a
contrasting
section
and
then
the
first
part
comes
back
like
in
the
piece
we
just
played
and
that's
going
to
happen
again
here.
This
is
a
fun
kind
of
almost
blue
grassy
piece,
but
in
the
classical
style,
banjo
and
fiddle
by
william
kroll.
C
C
C
C
A
We
are
very
much
indebted
to
the
ames
city
council,
including
mayor
john
hala,
and
the
director
of
ames
parks
and
recreation
keith
abraham,
for
supporting
these
special
summer
broadcasts.
We
are
also
very
fortunate
to
live
in
a
city
whose
leaders
are
supportive
of
the
arts
and
concerned
with
our
quality
of
life.
This
next
clip
of
the
band
is
from
june
13
2019.
It
features
internationally
recognized
simon
estes
sinking,
with
the
ames
municipal
band.
Here
are
two
of
our
favorites.
Without
a
song
by
rogerson,
hammerstein
and
oman
river
by
kern
and.
C
B
B
C
C
C

B
C
C
C
D
Evidently,
it
is
by
the
austrian
composer
and
violinist
fritz
chrysler,
who
was
probably
one
of
the
great
artists
of
the
early
20th
century,
and
he
composed
all
kinds
of
pieces
like
this,
many
of
which
he
actually
attributed
to
other
famous
composers
from
the
past
and
got
published
as
pieces
by
some
famous
composer
and
then
revealed
that
the
joke
was
on
the
publisher
and
the
and
the
public
because
they
were
actually
by
him.
This
is
a
fritz
chrysler.
Gem
called
sean
rose.
C
C
D
So
we'll
conclude
this
portion
of
the
broadcast
today
with
the
first
movement
of
the
archduke
piano
trio
by
ludwig
von
beethoven.
D
A
professional
who
was
in
the
audience
at
the
rehearsal
said
that
beethoven's
hearing
was
so
bad
that
he
was
overplaying
all
of
the
loud
parts.
To
the
point
where
you
couldn't
hear
the
two
string
players
and
the
piano
soft
dynamics
were
so
soft
that
you
couldn't
even
hear
the
notes
from
the
piano.
So
it
really
was
not
a
good
performance
by
the
great
composer,
but
it
was
his
last
one
and
after
that
he
kept
composing
for
many
years,
but
didn't
perform
publicly
anymore.
D
This
piece
has
one
interesting
thing
to
listen
for
in
the
middle
you'll
hear
a
very
long
section
where
we
pluck
or
what
we
call
pizzicato
the
string
instruments
and
it's
one
of
the
longest
sections
of
of
pizzicato
in
a
piece
of
chamber
music,
especially
from
this
time
period.
So
this
is
the
first
movement
of
the
archduke
piano
trio
by
ludwig
von.
