The
the
neighborhood
around
me
really,
it
really
shows
how
what
Ames
looked
like
around
the
turn
of
the
20th
century,
and
so
it's
great
that
Ames
has
created
a
historic
district
in
that
area
to
show
to
show
what
English
like
then,
but
Ames
is
really
cool
in
that
you
can
definitely
tell
the
pockets
of
architectural
changes
as
the
community
grew.
The.
A
Old
town,
historic
district
was
initiated
by
the
old
town
neighborhood.
They
requested
that
city
council
designate
their
neighborhood
as
a
historic
district
and
and
the
old
town
historic
district
is
not
only
a
local
historic
district.
It's
also
a
national
historic
district
to
become
a
national
historic
district,
there's
quite
a
lot
of
information
that
needs
to
be
put
together.
Upper
background
information,
that's
reviewed
by
the
state,
astark
Preservation
Office
and
then
pass
on
the
National
Park
Service.
Who
makes
the
final
determination
on
whether
something
is
listed
on
the
National
Register
as
a
district
or
landmark
so.
B
A
B
When
someone
wants
to,
for
example,
build
a
garage
on
my
property
and
I
live
in
the
old
town,
historic
district,
they
have
to
come
to
the
star
Preservation
Commission,
to
get
a
certificate
of
appropriateness
and
what
we
look
at
is
does
their
new
construction
project
or
a
remodel
if
they
were
going
to
do
a
remodel.
That
was
chapter
31
of
the
city
code,
because
chapter
31
is
the
code
about
historic
preservation
and
there
are
specific
design
requirements,
size
requirements.
It
has
to
look
like
it
fits
in
with
the
theme
of
the
house.
B
That
is
a
part
of
if
they
do
a
project
without
that
certificate
of
appropriateness,
I
believe,
if
you
are
in
Old
Town
district,
you
do
get
fined.
So
we
want
to
encourage
people
not
to
do
that,
and
that's
something
that
we
really
want
to
stress
is
that
it's
your
home.
But
you
do
live
in
historic
district,
so
you
would
just
go
online
or
contact
Ray
in
the
planning
department,
and
it's
only
for
specific
things
like
if
you're
going
to
alter
the
outside
appearance
of
your
house
or
build
in
your
home
or
next
to
your
home.
B
A
Work
they
do
I
would
say,
enhances
the
quality
of
life.
Of
the
citizens
of
aims,
protects
those
resources.
When
new
developments
are
proposed,
the
Commission
is
very
sensitive
to
how
the
new
development
occurs
in
relation
to
those
historic
resources,
and
they,
you
know,
they're
their
real
resource
for
the
community.
If
people
are
looking
for
information
about
any
particular
historic
property,
my.
B
Master's
degree
is
in
historic
preservation
and
I
was
very
involved
in
adaptive,
reuse
projects
in
Boston
when
I
lived
there
when
I
was
in
grad
school
and
so
I
love.
Someone
who
takes
the
building
that
hasn't
been
utilized
or
hasn't,
been
loved
and
comes
in
and
does
an
amazing
adaptive,
reuse
project
and
it
lives
again.
B
A
great
example
of
that
here
in
Ames
would
be
the
halo
architecture
building
they
came
in
and
just
did
an
amazing
job,
I'm
anterior
and
next
year
there
was
a
lot
of
wasted
space
in
that
building
before
they
they
came
in,
and
they
just
did
an
amazing
job
to
to
make
that
fit
the
youth
that
they
music.
If
for
as
an
architecture
firm,
so
I
think
that's
a
great
example
here,
name
one.
C
Of
the
projects,
some
of
the
side
projects
I've
been
working
on
was
for
downtown
plaques
on
historic
buildings,
and
so
that
was
a
means
to
try
to
promote
the
history
and
significance
of
the
buildings
that
are
in
our
downtown,
and
so
we
successfully
have
21
plaques
up
at
this
time
that
projects
been
ongoing
for
about
three
or
four
years
now
so
short
of
that
I
came
by
the
Commission.
We
started
that
and
I
got
involved
with
originally
just
how
they
were
going
to
be
mounted
on
these
buildings
and
respecting
that
application.
A
The
members
of
the
circuit
reservation
Commission.
They
have
a
positive,
interesting
in
preservation,
obviously
that's
kind
of
one
of
the
qualifications
of
being
on
the
Commission
and
they
have
a
real
passion
for
preservation
and
the
community
in
general.
So
a
number
of
people
have
served
on
the
Commission
I
think.
B
A
Role
is
liaison
from
city
staff,
the
Commission,
so
when
the
city
receives
applications
to
do
exterior
improvements
to
homes
that
are
either
in
the
local,
historic
district
or
Historic
Landmarks
as
staff,
we
review
those
and
we
write
a
report
for
the
Commission
and
make
a
recommendation
to
the
Commission.
I
am.
C
The
vice
president
on
the
Commission,
and
that
means
running
the
meetings
when
the
president
is
not
able
to
make
it
as
an
architect.
I
have
two
different
roles
that
I
bring
to
the
Commission.
The
district
district
is
a
residential
district,
so
these
are
residential
projects,
so
bringing
expertise
in
education
to
that
aspect.
Other
part,
is
on
the
commercial
level
and
my
experience
with
remodels
and
renovations
and
being
the
kind
of
helped
in
that
area
as
well.
I'm.
B
The
chair
of
the
surco
servation
commission,
so
every
month
when
we
meet
I
start
us
off,
get
us
going
I
meet
with
city
staff
when
there
are
issues
that
are
going
to
be
on
the
Genda
that
need
more
attention
and
I'm
kind
of
the
spokesperson
for
the
Commission
as
well
out
in
the
community.
When
we
do
the
preservation
Awards
in
the
second
April
City
Council
meeting
every
year,
I'm
the
one
that
participates
in
that.
And
then
we
also
do
have
the
mayor
through
a
proclamation
for
May.
C
A
C
B
Always
have
an
open
forum,
so
if
someone
has
a
question
about
something
or
wants
to
share
something,
they
can
come
in
and
share
at
that
time
we
talked
about.
If
there's
something
on
the
agenda,
that
is
a
certificate
of
appropriateness.
We
talked
about
that.
We
talked
about
fun
budget
conversations,
occasionally.
A
B
A
May
be
a
topic
on
tax
incentives,
those
types
of
things
the
Historic
Preservation
Commission,
has
seven
members.
Six
are
residents
of
aims
with
a
positive
interest
in
historic
preservation.
The
seventh
one
is
a
representative
of
the
Old
Town
historic
district,
so
we
have
one
insert
district
so
seven
whole
you.
A
Be
on
the
commission
there's
an
application
you
can
get
from
the
City
Clerk's
office.
The
mayor
looks
over
those
applications.
Maker
makes
a
recommendation
to
the
City
Council.
So
then,
the
mayor,
the
city
council,
appoint
new
members
to
the
Commission,
as
openings
come
up
and
there's
usually
one
or
two
openings.
Each
year
you
have
to
be
a
resident
of
city
names
to
serve
on
the
Commission,
but
I
would
encourage
anyone
in
the
community
that
they're
interested
to
apply
a
really.
B
Fun
group
of
people
to
work
with,
and
we
all
care
about,
the
city
and
how
the
city
can
continue
to
share
history
and
grow
I
think
we
would
be
really
excited
to
see
maybe
another
historic
district
pop
up
in
Ames.
It
takes
a
pretty
long
process,
but
I
think
we
would
all
be
excited
to
have
another
one
here
named.
