From YouTube: This Week in Ames
Description
We check in with the Housing Department to learn more about the Community Development Block Grant.
B
A
B
A
B
B
B
It
can
be
used
basically
for
three
main
purposes:
to
benefit
low
and
moderate
income,
persons
to
aid
in
the
prevention
of
slum
and
blight
and
to
be
used
for
urgent
needs
like
in
the
disaster
type
of
situation,
or
something
like
that.
So
those
are
the
three
broad
categories
that
the
program
dollars
have
to
be
used
for
and
then
each
year
we
annually
decide
specific
projects
based
on
the
need
and
input
from
those
in
the
community
and
looking
at
our
information
and
data
that
HUD
provides
us
about
our
our
community
needs.
So.
A
B
We've
done
a
lot
of
home
buyer
assistance
programs
to
help
first-time
home
buyers
purchase
a
home.
We've
also
done
a
lot
of
public
service
programs,
which
include
like
deposit
assistance.
We
helping
people
with
their
first
month's
rent
and
helping
them
with
deposits.
We've
done
childcare
assistance,
helping
people
with
childcare
up
to
three
months
same
thing,
with
utility
assistance
with
their
utility
bills
and
also
through
our
transportation
assistance
programs.
We've
given
people,
bus
passes
gas
vouchers
and
her
two
passes
to
be
able
to
get
around
in
the
community.
B
We've
also
done
some
public
for
infrastructure,
where
we've
gone
into
some
blighted
neighborhoods
and
improve
the
infrastructure.
So
it's
been
a
variety
of
things.
We've
also
used
the
money
in
some
of
our
flooding
years
that
we've
gone
in
and
purchased
and
demolished
properties.
There
was
damage
due
to
flooding,
one.
A
B
Again,
that
was
one
of
our
infrastructure
projects,
where
we
went
into
a
neighborhood
to
improve
the
infrastructure
streets,
make
sidewalks
handicap
accessible
and
to
help
the
flow
of
water
into
people's
properties
and
so
forth.
So
as
we
look
into
our
core,
neighborhoods
is
important
that
we
keep
our
infrastructure
up
to
date
so
that
we
have
viable
communities
to
have
people
be
able
to
maintain
and
live
in
safe,
decent,
safe
in
neighborhoods
and.
A
B
Not
only
visually
but
again
physically
now
on,
the
neighborhood
can
continue
to
be
a
viable
neighborhood,
because
that's
also
a
nice
area
for
available,
affordable
housing
for
both
homeowners
and
for
renters.
So
again,
our
core
neighborhood
has
to
be
maintained
and
CDBG
funds
is
a
good
resource
to
do
that.
So.
A
B
Guidelines
require
that
every
five
years
we
have
to
do
a
consolidated
plan
where
we
look
at
what
our
needs
are
and
goals
are
going
to
be
over
the
next
five
years.
Last
year
we
completed
our
five
years
consolidated
plan
for
the
year
2014
to
2019,
and
we
got
a
lot
of
community
input
because
again
we're
looking
at
something
over
a
five-year
period,
so
that
was
submitted
last
July
and
part
of
that
is
annually.
B
After
we
get
the
five-year
plan
done
then
annually
we
submit
projects
that
tie
back
into
that
five-year
projection
of
goals
and
projects
needed
so
this
year
for
2015-16
we're
now
in
the
process
of
looking
at
what
action
plans.
We
want
to
continue
after
just
doing
our
five-year
plan
for
this
upcoming
year
that
continues
to
address
the
needs
in
the
community.
So.
A
B
We
just
found
out
the
other
day
what
our
allocation
is
going
to
be
4
2015,
it's
about
four
hundred
and
eighty-four
thousand
dollars.
It's
about
mm.
I
would
say
about
three
thousand
thirty:
six
hundred
dollars
less
than
we
received
last
year,
but
again
on
still
a
good
amount
of
money
for
us
to
make,
hopefully
an
impact
on
our
projects
for
this
coming
year,
and
you.
B
Annually
we
scheduled
public
forums
in
advance
of
our
submitting
our
plan
to
HUD
and
prior
to
us
actually
doing
a
public
hearing,
and
we
scheduled
to
public
forums
for
this
month
on
Tuesday
februari
24th
from
1130-2
one
o'clock
and
on
Wednesday
februari,
25th
I
believe
from
six
to
730,
and
both
meetings
will
be
held
at
the
city
of
Ames
in
the
city
hall,
council
chambers.
Now.
B
You
know
we
like
to
invite
all
the
everyone
in
the
city,
who's
interested
in
housing
or
community
development
or
may
have
needs
or
questions
about
it,
because
it's
not
only
setting
goals,
but
it's
so
educating
people
about
the
funds
that
we
receive
every
year
and
how
we
utilize
those
funds.
So
we'd
like
to
hear
from
a
variety
of
people,
whether
it's
neighborhoods
or
human
service
agencies
are
actually
citizens
who
qualify
for
some
of
the
programs
that
we
do.
Businesses
banks,
whatever
we
invite
the
entire
community
participate
in
the
public
forums.
Now.
A
B
Well,
there
are
first
of
all
to
benefit
low
and
moderate
income
persons
to
be
used
in
the
aid
of
slumming
blight
removal
and
to
be
used
for
urgent
needs
and
again
we
don't,
hopefully
anticipate
any
disasters.
So
a
lot
of
the
programming
is
basically
going
to
focus
around
low
and
moderate-income
benefit
more
so
than
the
other
two,
because
until
you
have,
you
know,
disasters
or
really
large
areas
of
slum
and
blight,
which
we
don't
right
now,
which
is
good.
Then
we
can
concentrate
on
at
least
one
of
them
and.
B
Hud
says
the
income
limits
per
family,
size
and
they're
up
to
eighty
percent
of
the
aims:
storey
County
median
income
limits
and
those
are
designated
by
HUD
every
year
that
they
sent
to
us.
And
then,
when
we
administer
a
program,
we
can
advertise
exactly
what
the
maximum
income
limit
can
be
per
family
size
in
order
for
people
to
be
able
to
qualify
for
any
of
the
programming.
So.
A
B
I
can
say,
I
think
it
has
done
us
as
a
community.
Very
well
again.
We've
done
a
lot
of
programming
to
aid
our
citizens
who
qualify
for
the
program
I
like
that.
The
fact
that
we
can
use
it
to
also
maintain
a
viability
of
our
core
neighborhoods
I
mean
you
know,
Ames
is
growing
and
our
infrastructure
knees
are
growing
and
will
building
outwards.
So
we
can't.
We
cannot
forget
about
our
vital
neighborhoods
that
is
vital
to
central
everything,
downtown
grocery
stores.
Everything
that
we
have
is
there
in
our
core
neighborhood.
B
B
I
appreciate
the
opportunity
to
let
the
public
know
what
we're
doing
and
if
they
have
any
questions
they
can
contact
us
or
check
us
out
on
the
web
page
or
check
out
channel
12.
We
are
looking
at
expanding
our
program
lunch
on
the
12,
so
people
can
the
citizens
can
keep
up
with
what
we're
utilizing
the
funds
for.
So
thank
you
for
the
opportunity
right.
If.
