Description
Sign up for Story County Alerts, what is it? Doug Houghton from Ames Police stops the set to tell us.
A
A
A
B
I
have
a
variety
of
responsibilities:
I
supervise
the
communication
center,
the
folks
who
answer
the
call
when
you
dial
911.
They
also
answer
the
non-emergency
calls
as
well.
I
supervise
the
Records
Division,
the
folks
who
turn
out
the
crash
reports
and
the
criminal
reports
for
people
who
have
requests
and
then
I
do
a
lot
of
the
administrative
work
for
the
department.
We're
currently
in
the
budget
process
so
spent
a
good
deal
of
time.
Developing
next
year's
budget
actually.
A
B
We've
been
pretty
fortunate
in
the
last
few
years,
too,
we've
secured
a
number
of
grants
that
allow
us
to
do
a
variety
of
things
that
either
allow
us
to
expand
programs
that
already
exist
or
to
actually
engage
in
some
of
the
activities
that
we
probably
wouldn't
be
able
to
do.
Otherwise,
because
local
funding
is
not
available.
We're.
A
Going
to
come
back
to
one
of
those
grants
in
a
little
bit
one
of
the
things
we
wanted
to
talk
about
today
was
it
wasn't
that
long
ago,
in
this
community,
we
experienced
somewhat
of
an
emergency,
a
situation
in
which
a
water
main
broke,
and
we
had
to
issue
a
boil.
Water
alert,
something
pretty
unusual
for
for
Ames
a
little
bit
more
common
in
other
communities,
but
we
were
able
to
take
advantage
of
a
unique
tool
to
notify.
Residents
can
tell
us
a
little
bit
about
that
sure.
B
B
The
program
is
actually
supported
and
paid
for
by
the
Iowa
homeland
security
and
emergency
management
division
and
is
statewide
program.
It's
available
in
storey
County
through
storey,
County,
Emergency,
Management,
and
so
the
city
of
Ames
has
taken
advantage
of
that
program
and,
and
it
allows
us
to
get
to
people
quicker
and
more
broadly
than
we
might
in
other
circumstances.
Now.
A
B
The
program
allows
it
loud
us
in
this
case,
to
identify
the
specific
area
where
water
had
been
compromised
and
the
specific
area
where
royal
order
was
in
effect,
we
could
draw
it,
we
could,
we
could
go
online,
we
could
draw
a
polygon
around
the
exact
area
that
needed
to
be
notified
and
then
initiate
the
alert,
and
only
those
people
within
the
identified
area
received
the
alert
that
there
was
a
boil
order
for
their
area.
So.
A
B
Correct
and
it's
an
important
message
to
get
out
when
we
first
initiated
the
system,
we
were
able
to
populate
the
system
with
telephone
numbers
from
people
who
are
in
the
white
pages,
so
hardwired
landline
phones
that
had
been
in
place
for
a
little
while
it
did
not
include
cell
phones.
It
does
not
include
folks
who
are
new
to
the
community
and,
and
so
we've
tried
to
reach
out
to
get
more
people
to
to
sign
up
for
the
system.
A
Certainly,
we
hope
you
got
the
message
through
we
had
people
walking
the
area,
they
were
hand
delivering
notices.
We
put
information
on
the
web
sites,
local
media
social
media,
so
there
were
a
lot
of
other
tools
that
we
were
using,
but
storey
County
Iowa
alerts
really
was
successful
in
that
ability
to
triangulate
the
area,
send
the
message
directly
to
those
people
and
also
it
let
you
know
if
they
receive
the
message
or
not.
That's.
B
Correct
the
message
that
gets
delivered
also
has
the
option
of
letting
us
know
whether
somebody
picked
up
the
phone
and
listen
to
it
or
whether
it
was
delivered
to
an
electronic
device
like
a
an
answering
machine,
or
if
the
text
message
was
delivered,
it's
pretty
effective
and
it
it
does
really
make
it
more
efficient
for
the
city
to
understand.
Who
knows
the
issues
that
have
been
that
the
message
is
trying
to
address
so.
B
A
B
B
B
So
go
online.
The
sign
up
page
is
very
simple.
You
enter
those
those
devices
that
you
want
to
be
notified
on.
So
if
you
have
a
landline,
you
can
enter
that
phone
number.
If
you
have
a
cell
phone,
you
can
enter
that
phone
number.
If
you
have
a
cell
phone
that
you
want
to
get
text
messages
on,
you
can
enter
that
and
an
email
address
you
can.
There
are
a
wide
range
of
of
delivery
methods
that
you
can
choose.
B
In
addition,
you
can
then
select
where
you
want
to
receive
messages
from
so
each
of
the
municipalities
in
story,
county
and
then
of
course,
story.
County
itself
has
the
ability
to
deliver
this
message.
So
if
you
live
in
gilbert
but
work
in
ames,
you
could
sign
up
to
receive
both
gilbert
and
ames
messages.
A
few
of
the
school
districts
are
also
participating
in
the
program,
so
you
might
even
sign
up
for
a
school
district.
So.
A
B
Correct
it
does
it
geo
locates
your
address,
so
if
you
live
in
nevada
and
enter
in
nevada
address
you,
the
system
will
think
your
innovative
when
an
alert
goes
out,
so
you
need
to
enter
phone
numbers
that
our
cell
phones,
that
would
travel
with
you,
and
if
you
want
notices
from
a
geographic
area
in
which
you
do
not
live,
you
have
to
sign
up
for
that.
It's
a
very
simple
process
also.
B
A
A
B
A
B
We
applied
for
and
were
privileged
to
receive
a
grant
through
the
US
Department
of
Justice,
the
Edward
Byrne
memorial
justice
assistance
grant
program.
The
grant
is
designed
to
support
our
mental
health
advocate
the
police
department
a
few
years
ago,
hired
an
individual
to
work
part-time,
who
acts
as
an
interface
between
law
enforcement
and
folks
who
are
having
mental
health
issues
and
and
tries
to,
among
other
things,
coordinate
care
between,
or
contact
between,
mental
health
professionals
and
and
clients
who
need
services.
B
The
grant
which
is
about
fifteen
thousand
dollars
will
support
some
continuing
education
for
both
the
mental
health
health
advocate
and
our
partners
who
are
in
storey
County.
It
will
also
then
bring
provide
some
additional
funding
to
bring
that
training
back
to
local
agencies,
so
we
can
train
local
law
enforcement
officers,
local
dispatchers
and
and
folks
into
jail
about
how
they
can
better
address
citizens
who
have
mental
health
difficulties
who
are
in
the
justice
system.
Well,.
A
A
Again,
if
you
want
to
learn
more
information
about
the
story
county,
our
alert
system,
it's
easy
to
do,
go
to
our
website
and
sign
up
that's
again,
city
of
ames
org,
slash
alerts
that
will
get
you
right
to
the
signup
page,
where
you
can
get
your
information
entered
and
be
part
of
that
alert
system.
Some
other
dates
for
your
calendar.
Is
we
get
through
the
month
of
November?
The
final
yard
waste
free
day
is
coming
up.
A
It's
actually
Saturday
number
50
want
to
mark
your
calendar
from
that
from
8am
to
5pm,
and
also
remember
that
City
Hall
and
most
city
offices
will
be
closed
for
thanksgiving,
that
is
thursday
november
26th
and
friday
dinner
set
friday
november
27th.
Well,
that's
our
show
for
today,
thanks
for
watching
and
tune
in
next
week.
For
this
weekend,
Ames.
