From YouTube: This Week in Ames
Description
Story County Auditor Lucy Martin stops by Studio 16 to discuss the upcoming City Election on November 5th and the redistricting of Ames' wards.
A
B
So
what
that
did
was
that
created
a
vacancy
in
one
and
then
two
incumbents
in
another,
and
that
triggers
those
two
positions
to
be
on
for
a
two-year
term
for
this
election,
so
that
the
award
terms
will
not
change
in
the
future
or
that's
just
for
the
two
years,
so
that
we
can
get
two
people
back
into
the
city
council
and
get
those
awards
on
their
schedule
again.
So.
A
We'll
have
staggered
positions
once
again,
this
kind
of
gets
us
back
into
sync
right.
It's
the
way.
B
It
is
not
think
about
the
person
but
the
actual
position,
some
people
they
want
to
follow
the
person
it's
easier
to
follow
the
actual
position
for
wards
two
and
four.
So
it
will
stay
on
the
ballot
a
two
year
term,
okay
and
then,
obviously,
if
you're
in
wards,
two
or
four
you'll
have
those
races
on
your
ballot,
as
well
as
the
at-large
position
and
the
mayor's
position.
A
B
B
Was
when
we
had
good
information-
and
I
I
sat
down
with
our
gis
person-
and
we
I
contacted
diane
voss-
was
our
city
clerk,
a
city
clerk
and
then
doug
merrick?
Who
was
the
city
attorney
at
the
time
and
we
had
a
meeting
together
and
said.
You
know:
ames
has
to
divide
up
its
wards
and
precincts
and
you
do
have
it's
all
by
population.
What
you're
not
allowed
to
look
at
is
election
turnouts,
site
of
polling
places
or
residence
of
incumbents.
So
that's
that's
also.
B
B
B
You
know
change
is
really
hard
for
people.
It's
really
hard
for
my
office.
It
was
especially
hard
in
a
presidential
election
year,
especially
since
the
the
new
precincts
took
effect
january
15th,
and
then
we
had
caucus.
I
think
the
week
or
two
weeks
before
that,
and
that
was
really
confusing
because
they
had
to
caucus
in
the
new
precincts,
even
though
they
didn't
exist
yet
because
it
would
exist
for
the
november
election
and
the
primary.
So
so.
B
Election
day
is
coming
up
tuesday
november
5th.
Right
I
mean
the
best
way
if
you
haven't
moved
the
best
thing
to
do
is
say:
where
did
I
go
vote
last
november?
A
lot
of
people
vote
in
a
presidential
election.
A
B
B
B
Yeah,
it's
actually,
it
used
to
be
polling
place
for
1-4
back
when
the
library
was
in
1-3
as
part
of
the
redistricting
and
some
precincts.
We
ended
up
with
multiple
polling
places,
so
we
chose
the
library
over
st
paul's.
It
was
more
central,
but
st
paul's
is
gracious
enough
to.
Let
us
use
that
as
a
as
a
polling
place
as
necessary,
because
the
library
construction
is
a
it's
a
significant
project
and
I
imagine
we'll
have
the
primary
election
there
as
well
from
my
understanding.
It's
the
library
won't
be
completed
until
the
summer
late
summer.
B
So
I
mean
the
difference
between
that
is
when
we
change
2-4
permanently,
we
mailed
everybody,
a
new
card
to
show
that
they're
pulling
places
on
that.
We
don't
do
that
when
we
move
a
place
temporarily.
Okay,
we
do
post
the
polling
places
for
every
election,
that's
part
of
our
publication
and
it's
also
on
our
website.
But
if
you
went
to
the
secretary
of
state's
website
and
just
put
in
where
do
I
vote
and
you're
in
ames
14,
it's
still
going
to
say
the
ames
public
library,
because
that
is
the
permanent
location
for
that
site?
Well,.
A
A
B
Is
a
link
specifically
for
the
city
election,
it's
available
on
the
in
both
the
left
and
right
hand
margins
on
our
main
page
and
then,
if
you
just
go
under
elections
links
you
can
find
that
what's
on
our
the
right
hand,
side
of
our
page,
it
says,
find
your
polling
place.
A
B
You
can
it's
all
gis
based
now,
thanks
to
our
gis
coordinator,
matt
boyk
he's
been
very
helpful
and
also
the
board
of
supervisors
in
funding
that,
and
even
if
you
don't
know
where
you
live
and
a
lot
of
students,
they
don't
know
they
move
around
a
lot
and
they
they
have.
You
know
they
know
what
street
they
live
on.
They
might
not
know
their
address,
sometimes
okay,
and
that
sounds
yeah
strange,
but
it's
true
because
it's
they
they're
very
mobile
population
and
they're
they're,
the
group
that
they
probably
don't
live
where
they
live.
B
A
B
Well,
where
they
should
be
voting
is,
is
up
to
them.
They
do
have
the
option,
unlike
your
me,
that
they
can
choose
to
vote
either
at
their
home
address
or
at
their
university
address,
and
that's
something:
that's
unique
to
students
and
nursing
home
residents
and
people
in
the
military
which
we
won't
get
into.
B
B
Some
of
them
hope
to
own
businesses
in
ames
are
working
on
that,
so
they
might
be
very
interested
in
in
the
city
council,
election
they're
really
hit
or
miss
for
a
local
election,
and
that's
why
we
see
such
a
surge
in
our
student
heavy
precincts
during
the
big
election
like
for
the
president.
You
know
people
people
that
vote
every
four
years
are
the
ones
turning
out.
B
A
B
B
B
The
easiest
thing
to
do
is
is
to
go
to
our
website
on
under
forms
and
applications.
There's
an
absentee
ballot
request.
A
B
B
I
can
mail
you
the
ballot
based
on
that,
but
we
need
the
original
for
the
ballot
to
be
counted.
So
we
always
say:
please
send
us
your
original
documents.
Okay,
that's
just
a
little
quirk
in
the
law.
There's
just
you
know
technology
is
it
lags
or
sorry
legislation
lags
behind
technology,
always
so
a
lot
of
people
say
why
can't
I
just
do
all
this
online.
Why
can't
I
register
online?
Why
can't
I
request
a
ballot
online.
B
We
still
do
all
paper
here
and
we
do
need
original
documents
for
your
voter
registration
and
for
your
absentee
ballot,
and
that's
it's
for
your
protection.
An
absolute
ballot
is
counted
by
the
absentee
board.
What
they
do
is
they
match
up
your
request
form
and
then
the
affidavit
that
comes
on
the
envelope
that
you
mail,
your
ballot
in
and
make
sure
the
signatures
match
and
the
information
matches,
and
then
they
say:
okay,
this
ballot
is
good
to
go.
B
B
906Th
street
in
nevada,
so
if
you're
over
there
getting
new
tags
for
your
car,
paying
your
property
taxes
late
because
they
were
due
by
september
30th,
but
we
saw
a
lot
of
people
come
in
to
the
office
during
that
time.
That's
not
necessarily
convenient
for
a
lot
of
people
in
ames,
so
probably
a
mailed.
A
B
B
I
mean
my
office
has
busy
times
and
busier
times
compared
to
say
a
presidential
election
we've
had
45
absentee
ballot
requests.
You
know.
Last
november
we
mailed
out
something
like
close
to
25
000
absentee
ballots.
So
that's
that's
a
real
difference
in
in
workload
for
office.
Of
course,
I
don't
have
20
temps
working
in
my
office
right
now
either.
So
it's
you
know
we're.
Never
we're
never
bored
in
the
auditor's
office.
There's
always
something
going
on,
because
we
don't
do
just
elections.
B
B
Yeah,
you
know
we
we
updated
our
website.
I
was
a
big
proponent
of
moving
to
a
new
website.
I
find
we
still
have
the
same
same
issues.
It
looks
nicer,
but
people
still
are
having
the
same,
some
of
the
same
difficulties
navigating
it.
We
we
work
really
hard
to
to
make
it
as
easy
as
possible.
But-
and
you
know
I
don't
hear
from
the
people
that
say
hey.
It
worked
just
perfectly
for
me,
but
I
do.
I
do
hear
that
this
is
hard
to
find
or
why
is
this
buried
so
deep
and.
B
So
we
we
try
to
get
as
much
information
out
there
as
possible,
but
if
I've
learned
anything,
it's
that
you
can't
have
too
much
information
for
people.
A
B
B
But
that
does
list
your
polling
place
and
if
you
check
to
make
sure
that
that
has
your
most
updated
residency
information
on
it,
then
that's
where
your
polling
place
is.
You
can
also
use
that
to
change
your
voter
registration
so
there
it
comes
with
a
little
area
to
correct
that
and
mail
that
back
to
the
office
so
and
please
just
call
our
office.
If
you
ever
have
any
questions,
we're
always
happy
to
answer
those
questions
and.
B
B
For
us
to
call
in
either
I
think
you
know
to
call
colo
or
zirin
it
is.
But
so
I
don't
really
understand
how
area
codes
work
and
what's
long
distance
and
what
isn't.
A
B
B
Yeah,
I
couldn't
do
it
without
them,
they
are
wonderful
and
we
paid
the
minimum
wage
to
work
a
very
long
day.
So
I'm.
A
A
Don't
forget
that
yard
ways
free
day
starts
on
saturday
october
19th
and
if
you
missed
that
date
also
remember,
there's
dates
throughout
november.
You
can
get
more
information
on
our
website
at
cityofames.org
and
if
you
have
a
trick-or-treater
in
your
household
and
we're
curious
when
trick-or-treat
will
be
held
this
year,
it
is
on
thursday
october
31st,
with
suggested
hours
from
5
30
to
7
30..
Well,
that's
our
show
for
today,
thanks
for
watching
and
tune
in
next
week
for
this
week
in
ames.
