From YouTube: This Week in Ames | Boards and Commissions
Description
Mayor Ann Campbell talks about the process of serving on a City Board or Commission.
A
A
A
B
That's
true-
and
this
is
always
a
very
important
time
of
year,
when
we
put
out
a
plea
to
citizens
to
volunteer
for
those
boards
and
commissions.
We
have
18
of
them.
They
are
all
different
shapes
and
sizes
and
responsibilities.
But
I
look
upon.
That
is
probably
one
of
the
most
important
things
that
we
have
going
on
in
the
city,
because
it
does
feed
into
the
City
Council
a
lot
of
information
that
helps
frankly
ease
our
business.
B
A
B
B
So
that
is
one
example
another
one
that
I
like
to
point
out,
because
we
do
have
a
whole
variety,
the
Zoning
Board
of
Adjustment,
and
not
to
be
confused
with
the
Planning
and
Zoning
Commission
that
had
even
though
they
have
some
of
the
same
words
in
their
names.
They
nonetheless
have
quite
different
responsibilities,
but
it
is
the
Zoning
Board
of
Adjustment
that
deals
with
variants.
Appeals
deals
with
special
use
permits
that
are
very
specifically
needing
to
fit
into
what
is
allowed
by
city
code.
B
So,
for
example,
if
you
are
asking
for
a
waiver
to
for
the
height
of
the
fence
in
your
backyard,
it
is
the
city,
it
is
the
Planning
and
Zoning
Commission
that
has
to
make
that
decision.
However,
point
being
that,
if
you
are
unhappy
with
that
decision,
this
is
not
an
appeal
to
the
City
Council.
It
goes
directly
to
court,
so
the
Zoning
Board
of
Adjustment
is
one
is
an
example
of
one
that
has
some
pretty
important
legal
ramifications
as
well.
So.
A
B
I
have
to
also
confess
that
there
are
times
that
I
have
some
very
qualified
people
that
apply
that
I.
Don't
feel
that
at
that
particular
time
I
can
appoint,
because
I
am
looking
not
only
at
that
particular
board
or
commission,
but
I'm.
Also
looking
at
a
balance
of
May
cup
within
the
commission.
Well.
A
B
There
are
some
that,
for
one
reason
or
another
have
to
have
have
to
have
specific
length
terms
and
would
come
due
at
different
times,
but
for
the
most
part,
we've
tried
to
make
them
all
three
year
terms
eligible
for
one
term
of
reappointment
and
all
coming
due.
At
the
same
time,
it's
makes
me
able
to
keep
my
head
screwed
on
better,
but
additionally,
I
think
it
makes
it
easier
for
the
particular
board
of
commission
so
you're.
A
B
I
might
say
also
that
you
don't
just
come
in
blind
to
this
after
the
appointments
are
made
and
before
they
take
office
on
April.
First,
we
do
have
a
pretty
thorough
training
session
that
includes
the
city
manager.
It
includes
the
the
city
attorney,
it
includes
me
and
we
meet
with
with
them
just
bringing
them
up
to
to
par
on
what
the
responsibilities
are
for
each
of
the
boards
and
commissions,
but
also
covering
things
like
the
gift
law,
the
conflict
of
interest
law.
So
the
attorney
takes
very
careful.
B
Does
a
very
good
job
of
going
through
these
kinds
of
things
that
you
maybe
are
not
used
to
dealing
with.
If
you're
serving
on
a
committee
for
a
private
organization-
but
we
we
of
course
do
operate
under
open
records
laws
and
all
of
those
kinds
of
things,
so
it
is
good.
It
is
good
training,
but
we
do
give
so.
A
B
True
and
I,
it
is
I,
always
look
to
see
that
we've
got
somebody
who,
for
example,
in
applying
for
the
Parks
and
Recreation
Commission
I
like
to
think
I,
see
evidence
in
their
application
that
they
know
where
the
parks
are
know
where
the
swimming
pool
is
and
so
on.
So
because
we
we
do
have
people
that
have
particular
areas
of
expertise.
That
being
said,
I
also
frankly,
am
sensitive
to
not
having
not
trying
to
make
appointments
for
somebody
that
comes
with
just
a
particular
vested
interest.
B
A
B
A
Do
you
do
it?
Well,
we
certainly
get
information
out
to
our
social
media
through
our
city
side
newsletter
through
channel
12,
and
we
need
direct
people
to
the
website
to
apply.
It's
been
made
very
convenient
to
apply
online
for
those
boards
and
commissions
openings,
and
you
can
do
that
through
the
City
Clerk's
home
page
on
our
website
at
city
of
ames
org.
Only
one
factor
that
everybody
replies
actually
to
they
must
be
18
years
old
and
they
must
be
a
names
resident.
B
A
B
They
certainly
do,
and
I
must
say
for
I
can
give
examples
throughout
the
time
that
I've
been
involved
in
city
government,
where
this
has
been
a
get
your
feet,
wet
stepping
stone
for
later
running
for
City
Council.
I
think
it's
a
it's
a
good
Avenue
to
test
the
waters.
If
you
will
and
see,
if
it's
something
that
you're
comfortable
with
you
liking
that
you
feel
you
can
make
a
contribution
to
well.
A
A
If
you'd
like
more
information
about
how
to
apply
for
a
border,
commission,
don't
forget
that
application
is
available
on
our
website,
go
to
city
of
ames
org,
look
under
the
tab
for
the
City
Clerk's
Department
and
you'll
find
information
all
18
boards
and
commissions,
as
well
as
an
online
application.
Well,
that's
our
show
for
today,
thanks
for
watching
and
tune
in
next
week
for
this
week
in
Ames,.
