Description
Ames Convention and Visitors Center Bureau's Julie Weeks discusses the proposed convention center space
A
A
Guess
today
is
Julie
weeks,
executive
director
of
the
Ames
Convention
and
Visitor's
Bureau
Julie.
Welcome
to
the
show.
Thank
you
it's
great
to
be
here.
Well,
you
have
a
big
project
on
the
horizon
and
a
bond
referendum
coming
up.
A
lot
of
people
are
curious
about.
It.
Tell
us
a
little
bit
about
the
convention
center
edition.
Well,.
B
The
convention
center
edition
is
really
about
the
entire
iowa
state
center
aims
and
iowa
state
university
have
used
the
iowa
state
senators
they're
gathering
place
for
the
last
40
years.
If
you're
going
to
a
Broadway,
show
you're
going
to
stephens
auditorium,
there's
the
theater
productions
that
fisher
all
of
the
athletic
events-
big
12,
NC
double-a
in
hilton,
and
then
the
semen
which
was
built
as
a
continuing
education
building,
has
really
become
so
much
more.
It
holds
not
only
those
educational
programs
for
I
0
state
university.
B
It
also
hosts
outside
groups
for
conventions
and
conferences
and
about
a
third
of
the
usage
of
shame
and
is
actually
by
local
groups,
so
whether
it
be
for
a
local
business
meeting,
a
local
event,
a
wedding
reception,
a
party
or
a
chamber
event
or
a
lot
of
the
trade
shows
that
we
might
do
locally
like
the
bridal
fair
that
was
just
there.
Those
are
a
lot
of
local
events
are
also
enjoyment
now.
A
B
Know
it
has
weathered
extremely
well,
especially
stevens
and
hilton.
You
know
great
facilities
recognized
for
not
only
their
architectural
but
their
ambience,
their
environment,
but
it's
really
the
Shema
building,
that's
changed
the
most
and
it's
the
Shema
building
that
really
has
not
kept
up
while
it
has
21
meeting
spaces
and
an
auditorium
that
seats
450.
It
really
doesn't
have
that
single
large,
open
space,
where
you
can
do
trade
shows
exhibits
or
even
banquets
for
more
than
like
450
people
about.
B
You
walk
into
semen
today.
You
will
notice
that
there
are
still
some
orange
walls
so
from
a
decor
standpoint.
It
has
not
kept
up.
Technology-Wise
Benton
auditorium
is
very
good,
but
the
individual
media
are
lacking,
especially
in
the
sound.
The
area
of
sound
and
sound,
is
so
important
to
most
of
the
events
that
we
currently
do
so.
B
Has
really
two
components
to
it?
The
first
part
is
32
million
dollars
which
would
actually
expand
the
Shema
building.
It
would
literally
take
the
floor
of
hilton
coliseum
twice
and
put
it
on
the
north
side,
so
you
would
have
this
large
open
area
connected
to
all
this
other
space.
The
other
part
of
it
is
six
million
dollars
which
would
actually
remodel
the
existing
chi
minh,
bringing
the
sound
systems,
the
decor
and
the
rest
of
the
building
up
to
meet
the
new
standard
of
the
new
facility.
So.
B
B
The
way
it's
been
designed
also,
it
is
at
the
second
level
when
you
go
into
seaman
and
there's
a
new
drive
from
the
west
side,
which
would
allow
you
to
actually
bring
equipment,
displays
and
stuff
directly
onto
the
floor
so
like
right
now,
when
we
want
to
do
like
a
car
show
or
something
like
that,
we
don't
have
the
ability
to
get
those
nor
the
room
to
get
those
types
of
equipment
and
pieces
into
the
Shema
building.
So.
A
B
The
Iowa
State
Center
has
existed
for
40
years.
It's
in
that
location,
so
to
be
able
to
add
on
to
the
shame-
and
you
definitely
want
to
take
into
account
the
usage
of
the
space,
also
the
potential
of
flooding
and
things
in
the
future,
so
this
facility
has
been
actually
raised,
so
it's
at
the
second
level,
so
the
parking
remains
on
the
north
side
and
all
the
mechanicals
have
been
put
on
the
third
level
so
well
out
of
the
reach
of
any
flood
waters
that
would
ever
go
in
there
in
the
future.
So.
A
B
There
is
a
website
aims,
gathering
place,
calm
and
it
will
refer
to
the
power
points
that
have
been
used
for
a
lot
of
public
presentations.
It
also
has
the
visuals
the
floor
plan.
It
has
some
architectural
renderings
of
what
the
facility
could
look
like.
We
have
not
spent
the
money
to
actually
do
blueprints
to
actually
say
this
is
exactly
what
it
would
look
like.
B
B
Well,
the
bureau
is
involved
because
of
all
the
events
at
the
center.
They
bring
a
lot
of
out-of-town
visitors
and
especially
the
visitors
that
are
overnight
in
Ames,
bring
with
them
dollars
that
they
will
spend
on
a
hotel
when
they
go
out
to
eat
when
they
buy
something
to
take
back
home
when
they,
you
know,
do
a
variety
of
things
for
recreational
activities,
names
and
all
of
those
out-of-town
visitors.
B
B
Know
for
the
aims
community
and
the
residents
in
it
the
opportunity
to
partner
with
Iowa
State
University
is
significant.
They
are
able
to
get
a
new
Convention
Center
a
new
community
center
and
attract
more
visitors
that
will
bring
economic
dollars
to
the
community,
all
for
really
half
the
price.
By
sharing
that
also
because
of
the
involvement
of
the
aims
Convention
and
Visitors
Bureau,
there
will
be
a
subsidy
for
the
operations
and
for
the
rental
rates
so
that
local
nonprofit
groups
will
have
access
to
this
facility.
B
Much
like
they
do
the
city
library
nonprofits
at
little
or
no
cost
at
certain
times.
So
it's
really
the
partnership
between
the
three
entities
that
make
this
project
work
extremely
well.
So
when
is
the
vote?
The
vote
is
march.
Forth.
Polls
are
open
from
7am
until
8pm
and
they
are
voting
centers,
which
means
that
citizens
of
Ames
can
vote
in
any
one
of
the
seven
locations.
You
will
not
vote
by
the
area
that
you
live
in,
so
it's
a
little
different
than
a
regular
election.
Well,.
A
March
forth
is
certainly
coming
up,
so
we
encourage
everybody
to
mark
their
calendar
and
and
vote
absolutely
well
Julie.
Thank
you
for
coming
on
the
show.
It's
been
a
pleasure
thanks,
Susan.
Well,
if
you'd,
like
some
more
information
about
where
you
vote,
make
sure
to
check
out
the
website.
Www
storey
County,
Iowa
gov,
to
find
out
about
polling
locations.
Other
things
to
think
about.
A
If
you
want
to
purchase
your
firm,
an
aquatic
center
passes
early,
you
can
get
a
ten
percent
discount
through
May
fifteenth
for
buying
a
new
pass
or
a
20-percent
discount
for
renewing
also
remember
to
check
your
mailbox
for
the
spring
summer,
Parks
and
Recreation
catalogs,
which
will
be
coming
out
very
soon.
Well,
that's
our
show
for
today,
thanks
for
watching
and
tune
in
next
week
for
this
week
in
Ames,.
