A
A
B
My
career
has
hasn't
always
been
with
utility
hasn't
always
been
on.
The
energy
side
of
things
I
started
out
actually
wanted
to
be.
A
biologist.
I
was
in
college
to
be
a
biology
teacher
and
a
football
coach
and
how
that
translates
into
the
energy
guy.
Well,
you
know
that's
that's
too
long
for
the
amount
of
time
that
we
have,
but
essentially
what
I
did
is
I
went
to
work
for
another
utility
and
I
went
to
work
in
their
slackly
sales
department.
B
I
was
always
asked
the
question:
how
do
I
save
energy
just
seem
like
a
lot
of
that
energy
guy
type
of
work
was
involved
with
what
I
did,
and
so,
when
I
I
guess
kept
on.
With
my
career,
I
eventually
went
back
to
school,
to
get
a
business
degree
and
and
and
then
along
came
the
job
with
the
city,
and
it
looked
like
something
that
would
be
very
interesting
for
me.
So
I
interviewed
got
the
job
came
here.
B
Part
of
my
education
at
that
point
had
been
to
go
back
to
school
again
and
get
a
certification
as
a
certified
energy
manager,
which
basically
looks
at
just
a
lot
of
different
energy
type
things
well.
When
I
first
came
to
work
with
the
city
that
work
was
split
up
between
energy
services,
account
management
a
lot
of
different
things,
but
they
decided
they
needed
to
give
me
a
name.
What
are
we
going
to
call
you?
You
know,
and
so
we
were
all
talking
about.
A
B
Primetime
power,
it
was
actually
a
program
that
was
in
existence
when
I
came
to
the
city.
It's
the
longest
operating
energy
management
or
demand
management
program
that
the
city
has
started
back
in
1994.
What
that
program
does
is
it
allows
us
to
reduce
the
summertime
demand
for
electricity
and
the
way
it
does?
That
is
we
sign
people
up.
B
B
The
switch
then
stops
the
air
conditioner,
the
compressor
from
operating,
and
it
does
that
for
seven
and
a
half
minutes
out
of
every
half
an
hour
during
that
afternoon,
when
it's
hot
and
humid,
and
by
doing
that
we
can
reduce
the
demand
for
electricity
by
about
three
and
a
half
megawatts,
which
is
substantial,
and
if
we
do
that
consistently
summer
after
summer,
and
then
we
saved
the
city
millions
of
dollars.
So
primetime
power
is
a
program
that
isn't
necessarily
designed
to
save
you
as
a
homeowner
energy,
because
your
air
conditioner
is
going
to
run
regardless.
B
If
we
stop
it
for
seven
and
a
half
minutes,
it's
just
going
to
come
on
again,
so
it
doesn't
really
save
energy.
But
what
it
does
is
by
coordinating
the
off
cycles
of
all
those
air
conditioners.
It
reduces
the
demand
for
electricity,
saves
the
city
money
which
translates
into
savings
for
you,
because
it
helps
keeps
our
rate.
A
B
All
of
the
smart
energy
programs
and
primetime
power
now
has
moved
in
under
the
umbrella
of
smart
energy,
all
of
the
demand
side,
management
programs
and
demand
side.
All
that
means
is
that
it's
on
your
side
of
the
meter.
Okay,
it's
your
demanding
electricity,
so
demand
side
means
it's
a
program
for
you
and
then
there's
load
side
programs
like
the
primetime
power,
which
is
the
utility
company,
doing
something
on
their
side
of
the
meter
to
help
reduce
the
demand
for
electricity,
but
all
of
those
programs.
B
If
they
consistently
save
electricity
drive
down
the
demand
for
electricity,
then
what
happens
is
but
the
time
will
eventually
come
and
we'll
have
to
build.
A
new
generator
will
have
to
put
in
more
generation,
because
the
city
grows.
People
use
more
electricity
for
a
lot
of
various
different
things,
so
eventually
we're
going
to
have
to
bring
on
that
new
power
plant.
But
if
we're
successful
with
smart
energy
programs
now,
then
our
needs
will
be
much
less
when
we
have
to
bring
on
that
new
generator.
Instead
of
maybe
a
100
megawatt
generator.
B
Maybe
we
only
have
to
put
in
a
75
and
that
can
save
us
millions
and
millions
of
dollars,
and
so
what
we're
doing
now
is
we're
saving
energy
to
avoid
future
expense.
That's
what
the
council
looked
at.
We
did
a
feasibility
study
and
analysis
of
these
programs.
The
council
agreed.
That
was
a
good
thing,
so
smart
energy
was
born.
2007
we've
been
going
strong
since
then,
so.
B
Because
we're
going
to
physically
attached
a
switch
to
your
property
in
your
home
or
to
air
conditioner
or
by
your
air
conditioner,
we
actually
have
to
physically
have
a
signature
on
a
form.
So
there
is
a
request
form
that
you
can
get.
You
can
either
print
one
from
our
website,
city
of
Ames
org
and
then
go
to
the
Smart
Energy
link,
or
you
can
call
me
to
395,
177
and
I'll
mail.
You
one
out,
you
can
stop
down
and
help
you
fill
it
out.
B
B
We
because
of
the
fact
that
it
really
isn't
intended
to
save
energy,
and
we
are
going
to
psychol
your
air
conditioner
off
and
on
at
times
for
the
for
our
ability
to
do
that.
We
give
the
customer
a
five
dollar
per
month,
credit
on
their
electric
bill
for
the
four
summer
months,
then
so
when
they
get
there,
July
August,
September
and
October
bill,
they'll
c
minus
five
dollars
primetime
power.
So
there
is.
There
is
some
incentive
to
do
that
and.
A
B
The
indoor
fan
continues
to
run
if
it
was
operating
at
the
time
we
cycled
off
the
compressor.
The
fan
will
continue
to
blow
air
seven
and
a
half
minutes
really
isn't
long
enough
for
the
house
to
warm
up
enough
so
that
you
might
even
notice
it
on
a
hot
and
humid
day
the
air
conditioners
running
the
house
is
cool.
The
house
is
dry,
so
seven
and
a
half
minutes.
You
probably
won't
even
notice
it.
We
hope
the
program
is
invisible.
That's
what
we
want.
We
don't
want
people
to
be
inconvenience
by
it.
B
A
B
Electric
customer,
the
city
of
Ames
weather,
was
residential
or
commercial
is
eligible
for
a
free
energy
on
it.
The
energy
on
it
is,
if
you're
wondering
what
can
I
do
well,
if
you're
wondering
two
things:
how
am
I
using
my
energy
and
what
can
I
do
if
I
want
to
save
it
and
the
way
to
start
that
process
is
to
have
an
energy
audit
done.
An
energy
audit
establishes
a
baseline
for
you.
It
allows
you
to
understand.
B
This
is
what
I
have
in
my
home
auditor
is
going
to
come
in
and
look
at
insulation
levels,
windows
and
doors,
water,
heaters,
heating
and
air
conditioning
equipment
appliances.
You
know
that
kind
of
thing,
they're
going
to
put
together
a
report
and
they're
going
to
say
this
is
what
you
have
in
your
home
and
they're
going
to
make
recommendations.
B
This
is
what
we
recommend
you
do
if
your
goal
is
to
save
energy
so
reading
that
report,
if
you
make
some
of
those
chain,
you'll
save
energy
you'll
save
dollars,
but
we
we
don't
always
know
exactly
what
it
is
that
we
can
do
and
so
having.
The
audit
performed
is
a
way
for
us
to
establish
that
understanding
that
baseline
and
here's
where
we
started
so.
B
Is
no
cost
to
set
that
up?
I'm
going
to
give
you
my
number
again
because
that's
about
the
easiest
way
to
395
177.
Now
this
one
you
can
sign
up
for
online,
you
can
go
to
city
of
ames
org,
go
to
the
smart
energy
link,
go
to
residential
programs
and
out
there.
There
is
an
audit
online
audit
request.
You'll
have
to
know
your
account
number,
that's
how
we
tie
it
back
to
your
address.
B
A
B
For
refrigerators,
freezers,
dishwashers
and
washing
machines,
as
long
as
their
energy
star,
certified
they're
eligible
for
a
rebate
rebate
on
a
dishwasher
would
be
fifty
dollars
on
a
washing
machine,
a
hundred
dollars
on
a
large
refrigerator,
$100
and
so
freezers
fifty
dollars.
But
the
key
is
to
make
sure
its
energy
star
rated
and
for
a
refrigerator
and
a
freezer.
B
We
don't
want
you
taking
the
old
refrigerator
and
keeping
it
in
the
basement
with
pop
in
it,
because
if
you
do
that,
then
you've
just
added
electric
load.
So
we
ask
in
that
case
typically,
when
a
washing
machine
gives
up
you
haul
it
out
of
there.
You
put
the
new
one
in
same
thing,
with
a
dishwasher.
You've
either
never
had
one
before
or
the
old
one
is
given
up,
and
you
put
a
new
one
in
refrigerators.
B
Are
a
temptation
I
want
to
put
it
in
the
garage
you
keep
night
crawlers
in
it,
goodell
I'm,
going
to
I'm,
going
to
put
that
freezer
downstairs
and
have
even
more
room,
but
we
ask
that
you
take
the
old
one
away
and
that's
a
qualifier
for
that
particular
rebate
by
a
new
energy
star,
qualified
refrigerator,
make
sure
the
old
one
goes
down
the
driveway.
We
don't
care
what
you
do
with
it.
You
can
give
it
to
a
good
cause
of
a
neighbor.
A
B
It's
the
easiest
way
to
determine
what
the
program
rules
are,
is
to
get
ahold
of
one
of
the
claim
forms
and
on
the
back
page
or
the
terms
and
conditions
sort
of
the
rules
of
the
program
and
that
spells
it
out
pretty
clearly.
But
again.
If
anybody
has
any
questions,
give
me
a
call
I'm
happy
to
help
to
395
177
well,.
A
Thank
you
Steve.
You
always
have
a
wealth
of
information,
and
we
appreciate
you
taking
the
time
to
stop
by
thanks
for
having
me
be
sure
to
go
online
to
city
of
ames
org,
to
check
out
any
of
the
information
that
Steve
Wilson
gave
us
today
and
while
you're
online
go
ahead
and
like
us
on
Facebook
and
follow
us
on
Twitter.
Well,
that's
all
for
the
show
today,
thanks
for
watching
and
tune
in
next
week
for
this
weekend,
Ames.
