Hi welcome to this weekend, Ames I'm Susan gwiazda on today's show. We check in with the Ames Parks and Recreation Department.

My guest today is recreation coordinator, Ian knutson, and welcome to the show thanks.

You're, a relatively new city of Ames, employee, congratulations thank.

You it's could be, we.

Were saying you'd been here about six months in the recreation coordinator position and you really are trying on a lot of different hats. Tell me a little bit about what you do here. I'd.

B

Say the my biggest hat would be the Homewood golf course I oversee daily operations at the golf course I work with pad he's our turf care manager does a great job he and his crew top-notch. They always have and.

We said what a great fall we had this year for golfing. We.

B

Did yes, our leagues were looking very good. I really can't wait to get into it again next year and grow our leagues and really expand the game of golf here in the city of ames, so really excited for the 2017 season. Yeah.

And that we also mentioned Ice Arena, absolutely.

B

Yeah so right now, I'm helping out at our ice arena go cyclones, we're looking pretty good. This year we swept Alabama, which was great and.

A

A lot of opportunities for public skate absolutely.

B

Yes, arena? Yes, so if you're trying to figure out how to skate or learn, it's an excellent place to learn and then.

A

You mentioned being at Furman, yes,.

B

Yes, so just helping with the admissions and concessions over it from an aquatic center, it's busy busy beautiful facility I can't wait to bring my niece and I son there. This summer, yeah.

Those those have closed up, but will be back with us next year, as we get into the cooler months and opportunities coming up. You were mentioning to me a cross-country ski club.

B

Yes, yes, and the biggest thing about this ski clinic is it's free, so definitely need to come. Try out a new sport, I, don't know if you're like me, but when winter months come, I tend to hibernate or the most athletic thing I do is channel surf, so it's a good way to get off the couch get outside and enjoy winter. So.

People may not realize that we have places that are really fun to cross country. Skiing Ames I mean one thing of being a relatively flat community.

Skiing really is popular here. It.

Is and it's a great way to get some exercise, my backgrounds usually been downhill skiing, but if you're not too savvy at stopping I feel like cross country, is a def a good way to get on, skis and learned some new sports. So.

This crutch, cross-country ski clinic, is coming up. This.

December 15th, we will be at the Ames public library and then it will be the first snow worthy january of january. Fifteenth is what we're shooting for, but I will whether we never know if we're gonna have snow, so it'll be the very next weekend. So.

Thursday december 15th is in 6 30 to 7 6.

Obviously, at the library that's inside yes,.

Is the scene in the way? Yes, no, we will will be sitting down. We're just gonna, learn and see the gear and have some instructors come in really touch base on what the sports about and how we can and.

This is a collaborative clinic. Yes,.

Parks and recreation.

Yes, yes, so we're we're partnering with iowa state university with Jax and we're also partnering with skunk river cycle. I believe so. We have a lot of experience coming in a lot of great teachers met, everybody, they're, all wonderful people, so.

If I were going to sign up, would I bring my equipment with me to this. We.

Don't have equipment on site, so yes, please bring your ski equipment. I'm, December, 15 I, don't December! 58Th will just be sitting down and just going over everything. So.

I need our camping equipment on the 5th.

Note: okay! No on our second day when we're out there in January, we'll bring our equipment we'll have a quick hour of overview and then we'll strap on and we'll we'll take off. So.

You you mentioned this sort of the part 1 in the part 2 and the part 1 is at the library again, it's really kind of the coursework part of this yeah.

We're just gonna learn about the sport hit.

The books at the library, okay,.

Oh, that makes sense and then we'll be invited back january for part 2. Yes,.

Two is hands-on: we're gonna.

See where we're skiing or playing in the snow, okay.

Be seeing that East, River Valley Park, okay.

Excellent- and this does, I think, it's the second year for the clinic.

It went very well actually.

It was a big success last year, we're already getting a lot of excitement about it coming up this year, so we're hoping to grow. Okay,.

So I have teenage kids and younger would.

That be appropriate. I think that would be very appropriate what a better way, what better way to get used to something. When you can play with your kids and get out and smell and.

All I do of all ages. Yes, I, like that. Well, I know that parks and recreation is keeping you very busy this this winter in all seasons, I'm, so glad you had some time to stop by. Thank you for inviting me.
