Celebrate Safe Driving with Ames High School
A
A
So
my
guest
today,
our
officer
nice
to
date
with
Ames
police
department
and
ames
high
school
senior
miranda
mayor
welcome
to
the
show.
Thank
you.
Thank
you.
So
today,
Miranda
you're
bringing
an
important
issue
to
our
attention
and
that's
about
teen
driver
safety.
Can
you
tell
me
a
little
bit
about
why
we're
talking
about
this
topic.
B
Yes,
items
hi
this
coming
week,
we're
celebrating
teens
national
teen
driver
safety
week,
which
is
basically
a
week
that
raises
awareness
to
teenagers,
about
the
dangers
of
distractions
and
different
things
that
can
interfere
with
your
driving
and
so
basically,
it's
just
trying
to
educate
teenagers
on
how
to
go
about
driving
safely
and
how
to
be
smart
when
driving
and
just
trying
to
basically
help
us
to
drive
more
safely
and
to
prevent
injuries
and
car
accidents.
Great.
A
C
I
would
say:
distracted
driving
is
huge
among
young
drivers,
with
their
cell
phones
or
even
just
having
multiple
passengers
in
their
car
a
lot
of
the
times
when
we
have
to
go
up
to
the
accident
scene
and
the
cause
of
accidents,
because
they
were
distracted
by
they're
turning
their
radio,
their
iPad
or
iPod
iPhone,
or
talking
to
one
of
the
passengers
so
definitely
distracted.
Driving.
Now.
A
B
I
think
it
was
just
mostly
small
little
mistakes
from
things
that
I
forgotten
driver
said
that
I
didn't
really
know
exactly
what
I
was
doing
and
also
with
probably
what's
having
other
passengers
in
the
car
as
well.
There's
always
pressure
from
your
friends
to
try
to
do
something
cool
to
impress
other
people,
and
it
seems
cool
at
the
time,
but
you're
putting
a
lot
of
stuff
at
risk.
So
it's
good
to
remember
to
stay
away
from
trying
to
just
impress
people
and
focus
more
on
safety.
Sure.
A
C
Male
drivers
like
to
simulate
those
races
with
each
other
and,
like
you
said
they
want
to
drive
fast
a
lot
of
the
accidents
they're
egging
each
other
on
to
do
something
which
experienced
driver
would
know
that
you
know
that's
it's
not
responsible
to
drive
at
these
speed
limits
and
follow
the
rules,
but
young
drivers,
it's
fun.
They
they
want
to
do
those
things.
So
yeah
I
definitely
see
that
and
also
with
males
it's.
We
experience
more
fatal
crashes
with
males,
because
it's
shown
that
they're
less
likely
to
wear
their
seatbelts
so.
C
A
B
B
Of
gain
your
confidence
as
a
driver,
I
think
definitely
that
was
before
I
started
driver's
head
with
the
driving
with
the
adult
I
had
only
driven,
maybe
two
or
three
times
with
my
dad.
So
it
was
kind
of
scary,
but
it's
definitely
where
I
became
most
comfortable
with
my
driving,
and
it
was
also
with
one
of
my
best
friends
that
I
did
it
with
so
we
kind
of
helped
each
other,
along
with
that,
so
I
enjoyed
that
part
of
drivers
and.
A
So
the
whole
permitting
process
sort
of
a
graduated
driving
system
is
another
way
that
the
state
of
Iowa
has
tried
to
increase
the
safety
among
our
teen
drivers
and
I.
Are
there
other
things
that
you're
noticing
highway
driving,
vs.
city
driving
or
in
other
dangerous
kinds
of
driving?
That
teens
tend
to
do
not.
C
So
much
the
difference
between
Highway
and
in
city
driving
I
mean
obviously,
if
you're
in
the
city
have
more
distractions
and
what
we
notice
among
young
drivers
is
that
their
new
drivers,
so
they're
so
focused
on
the
road
that
they
don't
do
that
scanning
that
a
lot
more
experienced
drivers
are
able
to
do
so.
They
might
be
tending
to
but
they're,
focusing
straight
forward,
and
so
those
other
distractions
such
as
turning
vehicles
or
pedestrians,
that
kind
of
gets
away
from
them
and
a
lot
of
accidents
are
caused
from
that.
Just
lack
of
scanning
and.
A
A
B
Definitely
I
see
a
lot
of
things
that
they
like
to
do
that
they
think
is
funny
with
like
moving
the
wheel
around
and
like
stopping
and
then
accelerating,
really
quickly
and
stuff.
Like
that
and
then
texting
while
driving
is
a
big
thing.
A
lot
of
us
will
get
on
our
friends
to
be
like
come
on.
Don't
do
that
because
it's
definitely
a
huge
risk
to
be
texting
while
driving
and
what's.
C
Statewide
wall
teams,
drivers
that
are
issued
a
permit
or
instruction
permit,
are
not
allowed
to
use
any
electronical
device
in
their
vehicle
which
isn't
permanently
installed.
So
that
goes
for
you
know
if
you're
on
your
phone,
you
just
want
to
check
your
GPS.
You
cannot
use
anything
if
it's
not
installed
in
the
vehicle
and
that
unless
you're
off
the
travel
portion
of
the
highway,
so
some
people
say
was
that
a
stop
sign
I
was
completely
stopped.
It
still
doesn't
count.
So
that's
one
of
our
laws
that
was
put
in
place.
Adults
still
can.
C
C
A
C
Definitely
you're
not
a
great
driver
if
you're
driving,
with
your
knees,
you're
putting
on
your
makeup,
you're
doing
all
different
things
that
your
main
focus
should
be
on
the
road
because,
like
they
said
no
matter
how
great
of
a
driver
you
are
as
a
teen
driver,
there's
always
someone
out
there
who
not
paying
attention
and
a
lot
of
times.
That's
where
the
accidents
come
from.
It's
not
necessarily.
A
B
Next
friday,
we're
having
a
big
old
school
assembly
and
we're
having
different
city
representatives
come
in
and
talk
about
the
dangers
of
different
distractions
while
driving
and
all
that
kind
of
stuff,
and
so
that's
really
just
going
to
kind
of
get
the
whole
school
together
on
this
and
then
also
throughout
the
week.
Everyone
can
go
online
to
ww
celebrate
my
drive.
Calm
where
you
can
pledge
should
be
a
safe
driver
and
anyone
in
the
community
can
go
on
there
and
vote
on
that
website
as
well
for
ames,
high
school
and
so
on.
B
The
end
for
the
school
that
gets
the
most
amount
of
votes
can
get
a
twenty-five-thousand-dollar
grant
to
their
school,
so
that'd
be
really
awesome
if
full
community
could
help
boat
with
us,
and
so
we're
going
to
be
doing
that
throughout
the
week
in
our
english
classes
and
we're
also
all
going
to
receive
red
t-shirts
for
the
whole
school.
That
say
something
about
teen
driver
safety
on
them,
so
that
will
also
make
like
a
cohesive,
miss
throughout
the
whole
school
on
that
idea.
Well,.
A
It's
really
a
great
campaign
and
brings
attention
to
an
issue
that
so
many
young
drivers
face
I
appreciate
both
of
you
come
in
on
the
show,
and
it
was
great
information
for
all
ages
of
drivers
experienced
or
new.
Obviously,
we
can
all
learn.
Thank
you
for
having
your
things.
If
you've
been
saving
up,
the
leaves
from
your
yard.
Remember
that
yard
waste
free
day
will
come
up
on
saturday
october
19th
from
8am
to
4pm.
You
can
take
your
leaves
two
chaniz
technology.
A
That's
off
of
university
boulevard,
follow
the
road
through
the
gravel
for
about
a
mile
and
a
half
and
look
for
Tammuz
technology
on
the
west
side
of
the
road.
So
if
you
missed
anything,
that's
going
on
at
the
city
of
ames,
don't
forget
to
check
us
out
on
facebook
or
twitter,
and
you
can
always
watch
channel
12
through
our
website
or
through
video
on
demand.
Well,
that's
our
show
for
today,
thanks
for
watching
and
tune
in
next
week
for
this
week
in
Ames,.
