Description
Learn more about Story County's new emergency notification system.
A
B
My
job
function
kind
of
covers
all
of
those
things
that
people
don't
think
about
when
they
think
about
traditional
police
work,
there's
a
patrol
and
investigations,
the
detectives
and
and
the
on
the
street
police
officers.
My
responsibilities
lie
more
in
the
office
and
responsible
for
the
communication
center,
the
911
folks
I'm
responsible
for
records
and
then
sort
of
the
administrative
duties
budget
grant
administration
things
like
that.
So.
B
B
B
20
26
years
27
years,
yeah
I
worked
at
the
University
for
most
of
that
time
and
as
I
said
with
the
city
for
about
seven
years
now,
so.
A
B
Has
been
for
the
last
five
or
six
years,
the
aims
in
and
all
of
story
county
has
utilized
the
system
called
Code
Red
a
product
from
a
specific
company
in
in
the
last
legislative
session,
the
legislature
helped
approve
and
fund
a
statewide
system.
Statewide
system
is
called
when's.
The
wireless
emergency
notification
system
and
storey
County
residents
will
pick
up
that
system
in
the
next
few
weeks
and
we'll
know
it
locally.
As
story
county
alerts.
Excuse
me
Story,
County,
Iowa
alerts.
B
The
the
program
is
much
the
same.
It's
a
mass
notification
system
that
allows
emergency
and
disaster
planning
folks
to
contact
large
numbers
of
of
aims
or
story
county
residents
by
phone
with
a
voice
message
by
text
or
by
email,
any
one
of
those
or
all
three
of
them
are
available
to
anybody
in
the
county
who
signs
up
for
the
service.
So.
A
B
Correct
the
mass
notification
system
is
is
a
is
basically
a
computer-based
program,
but
it
has
a
human
element.
Somebody
has
to
craft
a
message
that
will
go
out
to
residents,
implement
that
message
and
then
the
the
telephone
system
has
to
get
that
out
to
a
large
number
of
folks.
So
you
can
imagine
if
you
tried
to
make
22,000
phone
calls,
even
if
they
are
two
cell
phones.
There
is
some
time
lag
in
that
process.
B
So
as
part
of
the
of
the
implementation
process
story,
county
and
ames
officials
have
made
the
determination
that
the
program
should
be
used
for
only
those
kinds
of
emergencies
that
are
appropriate
for
a
little
bit
more
delayed
response.
Floods
are
a
perfect
example.
We
see
floods
come
in,
we
have
the
data.
The
telus
of
waters
rising,
so
notifying
people
about
a
flood
event
would
be
perfect
for
the
story.
B
County
iowa
alerts
project
the
trouble
with
most
weather
events
is:
they
are
fast,
developing
and
passed
through
both
ames
in
story
county
quite
quickly,
so
the
use
of
story,
county
iowa
alerts
for
that
particular
purpose-
is
not
something
that
we're
planning
to
do.
The
other
part
of
that
is,
there
are
a
wide
range
of
weather
notification
systems
that
are
easily
available
to
residents
weather
radios.
Most
cell
phone
companies
have
apps
or
other
processes
that
will
give
you
a
weather
alerts
that
that
we
prefer
people
use
so.
A
B
B
444
that
limited
number
of
people-
and
it
is
a
relatively
limited
number
of
of
people-
I
think
the
transition
actually
imported
22,000
phone
numbers
and
in
a
county
where
the
population
that's
substantially
larger
than
that
we
know
most
people
didn't
make
it,
but
it
we
have
imported
those
white
page
numbers
in
two
storey,
County
Iowa
alerts.
All
other
people
need
to
opt
in
and
by
that
I
mean
they
do
need
to
to
go
online,
go
to
the
to
the
city
of
Ames
website
or
the
story,
county
emergency
management
website
and.
B
B
To
the
registration
form
and
in
the
registration
form,
then,
is
quite
easy.
You
enter
your
name,
your
phone
number,
where
you
want
to
receive
alerts,
an
email
address
where
you
want
to
receive
alerts
and
then,
where
you
want
to
be
listed,
you
do
have
to
enter
your
address
as
well,
but
you
also
have
to
choose
where
you
want
to
receive
notifications
from
so
there's
a
list
of
all
the
cities
and
towns
in
Story
County.
You
choose
those
that
you
want
to
have
notices
from.
B
B
Correct
it,
you
do
have
to
choose
at
least
one
there's,
no
countywide
notification.
You
have
to
choose
at
least
one
and
then
choose
as
many
as
you
want.
There
are
also
three
school
districts
that
are
participating
in
story:
county
iowa
alerts.
If
you're
associated
with
those
school
districts,
you
can
choose
those
as
well.
The
school
districts
that
are
not
included
are
those
that
have
their
own
notification
system
and
have
chosen
to
stick
with
their
own
notification
system.
B
Exactly
there
isn't
an
additional
spot
on
the
on
the
registration
page
that
if
you
are
a
person
with
special
needs
or
disability,
you
can
indicate
that
in
on
the
notification
system-
and
it
doesn't-
the
system
doesn't
separate
people
out
based
on
on
those
criteria.
But
it
would
be
an
opportunity
for
disaster
response
officials
to
search
to
try
to
find
if
there
are
folks
in
a
particular
location
that
that
have
special
needs
or
disabilities.
Such.
A
B
And,
quite
honestly,
I
would
encourage
everyone
to
go
in
and
enter
their
data,
even
if
they
have
a
white
pages
phone
number,
because
it
won't
include
their
cell
phone
number.
It
won't
include
their
email
address.
We
want
to
be
sure
that
their
physical
location,
their
current
living,
addresses
current,
so
I
would
encourage
everyone
to
go
in
and
and
manage
their
own
registration.
It's
simple
and
it's
quick
sure.
A
B
B
We're
also
encouraging
businesses
to
register
as
businesses,
for
just
as
an
example
in
in
flood
situations
in
Ames
frequently
it
is
businesses
that
are
first
threatened
by
rising
water.
If
we
can
use
the
mass
notification
system
to
reach
those
businesses
to
give
them
for
warning
that
that's
just
all
the
faster
they
can
respond
to
potential
disaster.
Well,.
A
B
A
A
Speaking
of
emergencies
and
disasters,
we
are
sort
of
coming
up
upon
the
season
where
we
tend
to
see
a
lot
of
weather
of
events,
not
necessarily
a
story,
county
alerts,
kind
of
warning,
but
we
we
do
outdoor
sirens
to
warn
people
weather
events.
It's
just
one
of
the
many
ways
that
we
let
people
know
something's
coming
talk
a
little
bit
about
the
sirens
and
we
do
monthly
testing.
We.
B
Do
Ames
has
well,
there
are
21
sirens
in
the
city
of
Ames,
five
of
those
around
the
ISU
campus,
and
16
of
them
are
scattered
around
town.
We
do
test
those
once
a
month.
Ten
o'clock
in
the
morning
on
the
first
wednesday
of
every
month,
provided
that
the
weather
is
good.
We
don't
want
to
confuse
anybody
with
a
test.
The
the
weather
sirens
are
really
designed
as
an
outdoor
notification
system
and
they
do
a
fairly
good
job
across
the
city
of
Ames.
B
Getting
get
into
a
safe
place,
the
historic
advice
has
always
been
go
to
the
basement,
and
that
holds
true
today
for
those
places
who
don't
have
basements,
the
recommendation
is
get
to
an
interior
room,
one
that
doesn't
have
windows,
preferably
oftentimes.
A
bathroom
becomes
that
the
choice
and
getting
in
the
tub
can
be
an
alternative.
The
lowest
level
in
a
building
that
you
can
get
to
is
also
highly
recommended.
So
under
a
stairwell.
B
If,
if
there's
no
other
options,
if
you're
outside
and
can't
get
indoors
go
into
the
lowest
area,
that
you
can
find
a
ditch
or
a
depression,
is
your
best
option,
with
the
caveat
that
you
want
to
be
sure
that
the
ditch
you're
climbing
into
is
is
in
the
water
Raceway,
you
don't
want
to
get
caught
in
quickly
rising
waters
in
in
a
downpour.
Well,.
A
A
If
you
want
more
information
about
the
story,
county,
iowa
alerts
or
would
like
to
register
that
information
is
available
on
our
website
that
city
of
ames
org
slash
alerts,
it
will
take
you
directly
to
the
page
where
you
can
put
your
information
in
and
get
signed
up
for
that
system.
Well,
that's
our
show
for
today,
thanks
for
watching
tune
in
next
week
for
this
week
in
Ames,.
