Description
Susan and Heather Johnson from the Octagon discuss the upcoming Octagon Art Festival and the Public Art Commission.
A
A
My
guest
today
is
heather
johnson
executive
director
with
the
ames
octagon,
who
is
also
a
member
of
the
public
art
commission,
heather
welcome
to
the
show
good
morning.
Thank
you
well
we're
here
today
to
talk
about
a
lot
of
things.
The
public
art
commission
is
doing
and
they're
always
so
visible
here
downtown.
I
can
see
so
many
different
projects.
Just
you
know
within
this,
within
the
scope
of
50
feet
that
the
public
art
commission
has
been
involved
in
talk
a
little
bit
about
the
ames
public
art
commission.
B
Absolutely
the
public
arts
commission
is
commissioned
through
the
city
of
ames,
and
its
goal
is
to
provide
aesthetic
arts
throughout
ames
for
all
ames
residents
to
enjoy
behind
us.
As
you
can
see,
we
have
bunny
by
jeff
bowers
from
texas
and
he's
one
of
five
sculptures.
That's
on
display
in
the
downtown
main
street
cultural
district
and
we're
just
happy
that
we
have
a
colorful
variety.
This
year
we
have
five
different
states
represented.
We
have
someone
from
georgia,
nebraska
missouri
in
iowa
and,
of
course,
texas.
A
B
Right
we
want
to
invite
the
public
to
if
they
have
a
neighborhood
that
would
like
a
sculpture
piece
to
be
displayed.
We
have
a
form
online,
cityofames.org,
backslash,
pac
and
of
the
five
sculptures
they
can
choose,
one
that
they
would
like
and
do
a
submission
through
the
form.
It's
an
easy
one
page
form
it's
due
december
15th,
but
it's
really
easy.
Just
have
to
write
down
the
name
of
it.
B
A
Which
is
so
interesting,
as
you
drive
around
the
community,
you
can
see
little
pieces
of
art
being
displayed
in
public
spaces
within
neighborhoods,
sometimes
a
neighborhood
park,
sometimes
a
cul-de-sac,
and
it's
sort
of
this
unexpected
sort
of
bonus
when
you
are
just
walking
around
or
driving
around
the
community.
It's.
A
And
those
are
one
of
the
programs
that
sort
of
administered
by
public
art
you,
your
group
works
at
selecting
those
admissions
submissions,
getting
them
down
to
just
a
few
having
them
displayed
here,
arranging
all
that
and
then
helping
to
select
the
neighborhoods.
That
would
end
up
those
pieces.
B
That's
correct
and
we
invite
the
neighborhood
to
come
down
on
sunday
september
22nd
during
the
art
festival
from
10
to
5,
and
the
public
arts
commission
will
have
a
booth
and
people
can
vote
for
their
favorite
sculpture
and
hopefully
also
submit
an
entry
form
by
december
15th
if
they
would
like
one
of
those
sculptures
to
be
displayed
in
their
own
neighborhood.
Yeah.
A
B
Yes,
we've
been
very
fortunate:
this
is
the
43rd
festival
and
we
love
having
in
main
street
cultural
district
as
another
highlight
event.
It's
free
for
the
public,
we'll
have
over
a
hundred
artists
from
eight
different
states.
It's
a
great
way
to
come
out
support
the
arts,
we'll
have
live,
entertainment,
kids
activities
again
it's
from
10
to
five
and
we
welcome
people
to
come
down
and
enjoy
artwork
behind
me.
We
also
have
a
red
bike.
Rack,
that's
really
new!
This.
B
A
Well,
I
remember
the
first
time
we
saw
the
red
bike
rack.
I
think
I
was
sort
of
like
what
is
that
right
away
bikers
connected
that
with.
Oh,
this
is
a
great
secure
place
to
put
my
bike
and,
as
you
walk
along
main
street,
you
can
see
like
the
quasi
crystals
other
ones
that
you
sort
of
look
at,
and
you
wonder
what
are
those
but
the
bikers
seem
to
get
it
just
intuitively
that
that's
what
they're
there
for
exactly.
B
A
B
Right
now
is
12
people
and
we
do
invite
people
to
submit
an
application
if
they
would
like
to
be
a
part
of
the
public
arts
commission.
It
is
selected
by
the
mayor
from
different
entries,
so
we
will
have
a
couple
openings
next
year
and
we
invite
the
public
if
you
have
an
interest
in
aims
and
the
arts
please
submit
your
form
and
the
mayor
would
take
a
look
at
your
application.
So
you.
A
B
A
One
of
the
things
that
the
art
commission
has
done
in
the
past,
which
I
found
amazing,
was
sort
of
this
artist-in-residence
program
and
you've
had
some
real
successes
with
the
inuksuk
you've.
Had
it
with
the
stick
weaving
out
at
ada
hayden.
Are
there
any
of
those
kinds
of
programs
in
the
works
or
maybe.
B
A
A
Well,
it's
hard
to
believe
it's
almost
that
time
of
year
for
budgeting
and
to
kick
off
the
city
of
ames
budget
process
is
the
town
budget
meeting.
That
meeting
is
scheduled
for
tuesday
october
1st
and
there's
more
information
on
our
website.
Remember
if
you
need
information
about
the
city
of
ames,
be
sure
to
check
our
website
at
cityofames.org
or
follow
us
on
facebook
or
twitter.
Well,
that's
our
show
for
today,
thanks
for
watching
and
tune
in
next
week
for
this
week
in
ames,.
