From YouTube: This Week in Ames | Holiday Fire Safety
Description
There are many holiday activities than can lead to an increased risk of a home fire. Deputy Fire Chief Richard Higgins reminds us of what we can do to stay safe.
A
B
So
as
we
get
into
the
cooler
months
of
the
the
year,
it's
time
to
start
thinking
about
fire
safety,
fire
safety-
obviously
we
think
about
year-round,
but
especially
in
the
month
of
December,
we
noticed
that
that's
our
highest
month
for
cooking
fires
and
it's
there
shouldn't
be
a
big
surprise
with
the
holidays
coming
up
and
people
in
the
kitchen
cooking
up
goodies,
all
the
good
smells
in
the
air,
but
just
remind
people
that
especially
this
time
of
the
year,
to
really
think
about
fire
safety.
Well,.
A
B
Absolutely
especially
if
you
have
a
grease
fire
throwing
water
on
a
grease,
fire
will
actually
cause
the
grease
to
come
out
of
the
pan,
which
means
the
fire
is
going
to
come
out
of
the
pan
and
spread
into
your
cabinets
and
surrounding
areas,
and
so,
whenever
you
have
a
cooking
fire,
the
best
thing
you
can
do
is
obviously
shut
off
the
cooking
device,
whether
it's
a
crock
pot
or
just
turning
the
stove
off
and
then
put
the
lid
back
on
the
pot
or
close
the
door
to
your
oven.
Keep
it
closed
turn
it
off.
Yeah.
A
B
B
A
B
With
December
its,
it
could
be
one
of
the
busiest
fire
months
of
the
year
for
us
with
just
the
calls
coming
in
for
that
type
of
thing.
For
people
celebrating
the
holidays,
we
want
to
remind
people
that,
if
they
Christmas
tree
in
their
house
to
keep
it
watered
to
keep
a
three
foot
away
from
any
type
of
heat
source
from
your
fireplace,
and
we
also
want
to
remind
people
if
they
have
candles
to
make
sure
that
they
have
a
one
foot
area
around
the
candle
where
nothing
is
going
to
touch
it.
B
We
always
remind
people
to
with
keeping
matches
and
lighters
away
from
kids.
If
you
know
you're
going
to
be
doing
a
lot
of
entertaining
you'll
have
people
at
your
house.
That's
not
a
bad
idea
to
remind
them
where
all
the
doors
are
out
in
the
house
too.
Once
again
we're
creatures
of
habit.
We
remember
the
first
door
we
came
in
and
that's
the
door
will
use,
but
most
homes
have
at
least
two
ways
out
whether
it's
a
patio
door,
another
door
or
even
a
window.
B
But
it's
not
a
bad
idea
to
remind
your
guests
that
you
can
go
out
to
patio.
If
something
were
to
happen,
we
have
a
couple
exits
in
the
home.
We
also
remind
people,
that's
a
great
time
of
the
year
to
check
your
smoke
detectors.
You
should
be
checking
the
monthly
anyway,
but
especially
for
going
to
have
people
in
your
home
and
doing
a
lot
of
cooking,
it's
a
good
time
to
check
them
and
just
make
sure
it's
working.
You.
A
B
It
can
quickly
get
dry
if
you're
not
watering
every
day
or
at
least
checking
the
water
level
to
make
sure
that
there's
enough
water
in
there
to
keep
the
tree
from
drying
out.
It's
a
good
reminder
to
if
you
have
pets
to
make
sure
that
they're
not
getting
in
there
and
drinking
up
the
water
and
keeping
them
out
of
the
tree.
It's
also
a
good
reminder
to
check
your
Christmas
lights.
B
We
recommend
that
it
be
a
laboratory,
tested,
approved,
set
of
lights
and
to
look
at
the
box
and
make
sure
it's
used
for
appropriate
for
indoor
use
because
they
do
have
indoor
and
outdoor
light
sets
that
we
want
to
make
sure
you
use
an
appropriate
type
and,
if
they're
afraid
or
anything,
that's
a
good
time
to
take
them
out
of
service
and
get
a
new
set
of
Christmas
lights.
Well,.
A
B
The
artificial
trees
are
treated,
but
regardless
we
it's
a
good
thing
to
turn
off
your
lights
when
you're
leaving
the
house,
if
you're
going
to
be
leaving
our
before
you
go
to
bed
turn
off
any
type
of
interior
illumination
that
you
have
what's
Christmas
tree
or
a
lighted,
village
or
Christmas
lights
around
your
fireplace
whatever
it
is
just
turn
off
those
lights,
eliminate
that
potential
for
our
fire.
You.
A
Mentioned
the
fireplace
I've
this
year,
I
remember
to
get
my
chimney
checked
out
as
something
I'm
supposed
to
do
every
year,
I
believe,
but
some
years,
I
just
forget
and
I.
Maybe
I
don't
use
the
fireplace
for
a
while.
But
if,
if
you
have
a
problem
with
the
chimney,
you
find
out
pretty
quickly
absolutely.
B
You'll
have
smoke
back
up
into
the
house.
It's
a
good
time
to
just
get
it
checked
out.
You
should
have
it
checked
out
annually,
also
a
good
time
to
make
sure
that,
with
your
embers
and
stuff
that
you're
taking
good
care,
though,
is
not
leaving
them
next
to
the
house.
If,
when
you
do
take
them
out,
if
you
clean
out
your
your
fireplace
and
not
leave
them
in
a
shop
vac
in
the
garage,
we
want
to
make
sure
they're
out,
wet
them
down.
If
you
take
them
outside,
make
sure
it's
away
from
the
house.
B
We've
we've
had
a
couple
fires
names
where
people
have
taken
the
ashes
out
of
their
fireplace
set
them
outside
to
cool
down
a
little
too
close
to
the
house.
The
wind
picked
up
blue
some
of
those
ashes.
Some
of
those
embers
into
the
siding
that
caught
the
house
on
fire
so
make
sure
they're
out
take
the
extra
time
to
to
get
them
away
from
the
house,
and
that
way
you
don't
have
to
worry
about
it.
B
Absolutely
it,
and
if
you
put
them
in
a
trash
bag
it
you
may
think
it's
well
didn't
melt
the
big
right
away.
Well,
if
you
put
it
in
a
trash
container,
then
it
all
of
the
heat
will
allow
it
to
build
up
a
little
bit
and
then
you
can
actually
have
a
fire
within
the
garbage
can
and
yeah.
Then
you
got
a
big
mess
on
your
hands.
So
take
the
extra
time
extra
hear
your
embers
are
out
cool
them
down
a
little
bit
of
water.
Well,.
A
B
Is
a
candle
safety
is
one
of
the
utmost
importance
things
that
people
are
murderers.
They
want
to
have
candles
in
the
home,
we're
not
anti
candle.
By
no
means
there
are
other
options
out
there
that
are
flameless
candles
that
you
can
use
that
have
no
flame
at
all,
but
will
actually
put
off
a
scent
and
provide
the
same
illumination.
The
visual
that
you're
looking
for
any
time
you
leave
a
room
with
a
burning
candle.
B
You
should
blow
it
out,
even
if
you're
just
running
to
the
restroom
and
leaving
the
living
room
area
put
it
out,
especially
with
younger
kids
or
animals.
Just
that
temptation
is
there
with
a
candle
so
blow
it
out.
You
can
come
back
and
light
it
when
you
get
back
in
the
room,
but
you
should
be
in
the
room
when
you
have
the
candle
burning
same
thing
goes
for
cooking.
If
you're
cooking
on
the
stovetop,
you
should
be
in
the
same
room
as
the
the
stove.
Don't
leave
it
unattended
stay
with
it.
A
You
mentioned
also
again
testing
those
smoke
detectors.
Carbon
monoxide
detectors
as
well.
I
had
one
that
was
just
going:
beeping,
beeping
beeping
and
couldn't
figure
out
what
was
wrong
because
it
I
thought
it
was
hardwired
into
the
house,
but
I
guess:
there's
a
battery
backup
that
I
had
to
replace
yeah.
B
Yep
with
the
the
new
standard
with
the
code,
it
requires
a
battery
backup
on
any
hard
wired
system
within
the
home
car
monoxide
detectors.
We
recommend
you
have
one
on
each
level
and
those
usually
have
a
ten
year
lifespan.
You
can
look
on
the
back
and
it'll
have
the
manufactured
date
of
when
I
was
produced
in
and
if
you're,
getting
too
close.
To
that
ten-year
point
or
you're
having
problems
with
it,
beeping
telling
you
that
sums
wrong.
It's
good
idea
to
get
it
replaced.
B
It's
a
pretty
cheap
investment
because
remember,
car
monoxide
is
odorless,
colorless
tasteless,
you
won't
know
it's
there
and
it's
really
hard
to
detect
to
this
time
of
year,
because
it
will
mimic
flu-like
symptoms
and
so
it'll
be
hard
to
tell
if
you're
having
any
signs
and
symptoms
from
carbon
monoxide
poisoning.
You
might
think
you
just
have
the
flu
when
really
you
could
have
carbon
monoxide
building
up
in
your
home,
which
we
all
know
is,
is
a
deadly
combination.
So.
B
A
B
A
Thanks
rich
thanks
for
stopping
by
if
you'd
like
more
information
about
fire
safety
messages
check
out
our
website,
the
fire
department
has
a
lot
of
safety
messages
on
the
web.
Also
remember,
although
we
don't
have
any
snow
on
the
ground
at
this
minute,
if
we
do
get
snow,
remember
to
clear
those
fire
hydrants,
the
fire
department
appreciates
a
three-foot
radius
around
the
fire
hydrant,
so
they
can
get
to
you
as
quickly
as
possible
in
the
case
of
an
emergency.
