in
ames.
In
1976,
ames
taxi
company
operated
a
dial-a-ride
service
in
ames.
In
the
name
cyride
begins.
A
A
Cyride
is
actually
an
agency
of
the
city.
Technically,
we
are
not
a
department.
We
are
uniquely
funded
through
the
city
of
ames,
iowa
state
university
and
the
students.
We
also
receive
federal
transit
administration
grants
for
operating
and
capital
expenses.
Cyride
has
a
total
operating
budget
of
approximately
12
million
dollars.
We
are
overseen
and
governed
by
a
board
of
trustees
made
up
of
six
members.
A
Two
permanent
members
are
the
city
manager
and
the
isu
senior
vice
president
of
operations
and
finance,
then
the
other
four
members
are
the
city
council
representative,
the
mayor's
appointee
and
two
from
isu
student
government,
a
senator
and
an
appointee.
We
also
own
the
intermodal
facility
on
hayward
avenue.
It
was
built
in
2012..
A
The
intermodal
was
created
to
connect
the
city
with
the
inner
city,
transportation
services,
inner
city
carrier,
jefferson,
lines
operates
out
of
the
intermodal
and
executive
express
which
runs
from
ames
to
the
des
moines
airport
also
operates
from
the
intermodal.
Cyride
serves
both
the
city
and
university.
A
We
operate
14
routes
and
midnight
express
annually,
we
provide
6.1
million
rides,
93
percent
of
our
riders
are
isu
students
and
each
student
generates
164
rides
on
cyride.
Cyride
also
has
a
complimentary
paratransit
service
called
dial-a-ride
for
people
who
are
unable
to
use
the
fixed
route
services
it's
operated
by
herta,
they
provide
approximately
698
rides
a
month.
Cyride
was
number
three
in
the
nation
in
per
capita
rides
in
2019.
number.
One
is
new
york
number
two
is
san
francisco
and
number
three
is
ames
iowa,
pretty
impressive,
our
ridership
mirrors
what
happens
at
isu.
A
We
constantly
evaluate
our
policies,
processes
and
procedures
and
find
ways
to
meet
more
of
the
community
writers
needs.
Our
ability
to
adapt
and
change
is
what
has
made
cyride
an
industry
leader
in
benchmark
organization.
Cyride
leases,
the
land
that
the
cyride
building
and
garage
sits
on
from
isu,
but
we
own
the
building
and
the
buses.
The
cyride
building
was
the
first
leed
gold
certified
building
built
in
iowa.
What
does
it
mean
to
be
leed
gold
certified
lead
leadership
in
energy
and
environmental
design
are
certified
buildings
that
reduce
stress
on
the
environment.
A
They
generate
less
waste
and
lower
the
use
of
energy,
water
and
other
resources.
As
we
tour
the
building,
you
will
see
where
things
were
designed
and
built
with
reducing
our
impact
on
the
environment,
from
our
locker
rooms
to
the
break
room.
These
were
built
with
environment
in
mind.
Cyride's
building
was
built,
so
it
connects
other
forms
of
transportation
that
allow
employees
alternate
forms
to
get
to
work.
We
connect
with
our
own
bus
routes
and
to
the
city's
multi-use
bike
paths.
A
The
locker
rooms
allow
our
employees
to
be
able
to
change
clothes
if
they
have
ridden
their
bicycle
to
work.
We
have
recycling
bins
in
the
break
room,
collecting
and
storing
rain
water
to
irrigate
the
landscaping
in
front
of
the
building.
Orienting
the
building's
windows
to
take
advantage
of
natural
light,
using
renewable
and
regionally
available
materials
on
the
interior
of
the
building,
installing
an
energy-saving
reflective
white
roof
which
reduced
urban
heating
cyride
works
hard
to
support
a
goal
of
reducing
carbon
emissions
and
creating
a
sustainable
community.
Soon
we
will
be
replacing
three
40-foot
buses
from
1993..
A
The
new
engines
in
these
buses
will
produce
90
percent,
less
nitrogen
oxide
and
particulate
matter
than
the
older
buses.
Upgrading
an
articulated
bus
provides
more
passenger
capacity
with
the
same
engine
emissions
as
a
40-foot
bus
cyride
also
received
a
federal
grant
to
purchase
two
battery
electric
buses
and
the
accompanying
support
equipment
and
reduce
carbon
emissions
by
over
122
thousand
pounds
annually.
We
have
replaced
two
support
vehicles
with
hybrid
and
are
evaluating
an
all-electric
support
vehicle
in
the
future.
A
We
will
continue
to
invest
in
our
fleet
and
facilities
to
align
with
cyride's
core
priorities
of
keeping
capital
equipment
and
the
facility
in
a
state
of
good
repair,
along
with
the
fta
requirement
of
preserving
transit
investment.
We
have
about
150
drivers.
One
third
are
isu.
Students
with
24
full-time
employees
and
the
rest
are
part-time.
We
hire
roughly
to
50
drivers
a
year.
Cyride
has
93
buses
which
are
25
feet
to
60
feet.
We
use
approximately
382,
000
gallons
of
diesel
and
biodiesel
a
year
we
use
20
121
gallons
of
gasoline.
A
We
drive
approximately
one
million
six
hundred
forty
nine
thousand
seven
hundred
and
sixty
two
miles
a
year,
a
standard
sized
bus
costs.
Four
hundred
and
eighty
thousand
dollars
an
articulated
bus.
Eight
hundred
fifty
thousand
000
and
an
electric
bus
is
900
000.
We
do
all
our
own
maintenance
and
body
work
for
all
the
cyride
fleet.
We
have
a
paint,
booth
and
tire
room.
It
is
pretty
cool
that
we
can
lift
up,
30
000
pounds
of
vehicle
and
walk
around
underneath
every
night.
A
We
have
lane
workers
who
clean
and
fuel
all
the
buses
they
take
care
of
approximately
75
to
80
buses
a
night.
During
a
weekday,
they
can
service
a
bus
every
six
minutes.
A
clean
bus
is
the
pride
of
cyride.
A
clean
bus
is
also
less
likely
to
be
vandalized.
The
lane
workers
also
park
the
buses
in
the
garage
they
can
get
buses
parked
with
about
one
to
three
feet:
spaced
between
them.
Our
goal
is
to
be
able
to
park
all
buses
inside
because
that
helps
prevent
mechanical
issues
in
the
winter.
A
The
garage
is
heated
to
55
degrees.
The
new
garage
edition
on
the
north
side
and
south
side
uses
radiant
heat,
which
is
even
more
efficient.
Unfortunately,
our
current
area
cannot
accommodate
all
the
buses,
so
you
will
see
buses
parked
outside.
We
hope
you
enjoyed
this
virtual
tour
of
cyride.
If
you
