From YouTube: Where's Brian?
Description
On this episode we work with a department that is always open. 55 uniformed personnel work round the clock to keep us safe. Do you know where I am today?
A
On
today's
show
we're
working
with
a
department-
that's
always
open,
55,
uniform
personnel
work
round
the
clock
to
make
sure
ames
is
safe.
Do
you
know
where
I
am
today,
I'm
brian
phillips?
On
most
days
I
work
in
an
office
for
the
ames
city
manager,
since
starting
here
I've
learned
a
lot
about
the
different
jobs
city.
Employees
have
many
of
them.
You
might
see
every
day,
others
work
behind
the
scenes
to
provide
quality
programs
and
exceptional
service
to
the
community,
and
that's
why
I'm
here
to
experience
the
different
jobs.
A
The
ames
fire
department
is
comprised
of
three
stations
covering
a
response
area
of
24.7
square
miles
in
2014.
The
department
responded
to
over
4
000
emergency
calls.
Today
we're
going
to
see
one
part
of
how
they
plan
in
advance
to
fight
fires
and
keep
aims
safe,
hey
commander,
how
are
you
doing
good?
How
are
you
today,
I'm
great,
so
tell
me
a
little
bit
about
your
role
with
the
fire
department.
B
A
B
At
most
incidents,
I
would
act
as
the
incident
commander
the
initial
incident
commander.
So
if
we
have
a
structure
fire,
I
would
arrive
in
the
the
suv.
I
would
take
command
of
the
incident
and
I
would
direct
the
three
different
fire
companies
to
all
the
the
myriad
tasks
that
need
to
be
done
on
an
incident
scene.
Okay,.
B
B
B
Correct
I
have
engine
1
at
the
at
the
library,
okay,
you'll
be
walking
around
with
them
and
taking
a
tour
of
the
building
and
jotting
down
all
the
information
we
need
to
gather.
A
A
C
The
pre-print
plan
was
set
up
by
the
ames
fire
department
to
get
us
into
buildings
and
businesses
throughout
the
town,
so
firefighters
could
get
familiar
with
things
such
as
emergency
exits,
spring
sprinkler
systems,
hydrants
in
the
area
and
then,
when
we
respond
to
that
incident
or
to
that
building,
we'll
have
a
better
idea
of
how
we
can
mitigate
that
emergency.
C
Well,
we
do
all
types,
we
do
apartment
buildings.
We
have
done
some
residential
buildings-
businesses,
especially
like
the
library
here
today-
and
this
is
one
of
our
our
major
pre-plans
here.
Okay,.
A
So
if
I
am
a
business
owner,
how
do
I
begin
the
process
of
a
pre-plan?
Can
I
contact
you
and
ask
for
one
to
be
done?
You.
C
Can
contact
the
fire
department,
we
do
have
all
the
buildings
that
need
pre-plans
scheduled
in
our
firehouse
software,
and
if
we
haven't
been
to
your
building,
we
will
be
shortly
and
anything
we
have
been
to
would
scheduled
out
for
the
next
seven
years.
So,
if
we've
been
there
a
couple
years
ago,
we
may
be
back
shortly.
Okay,.
A
C
A
A
C
Is
accessible
in
our
mobile
data
terminals
in
every
rig
so
from
the
command
car
to
the
engines
to
the
rescues
and
the
police
also
have
access
to
that,
and
basically
we
can
look
up
that
information
as
we're
in
route
find
out.
If
there's
people
inside,
if
there's
access,
we
need
any
particular
box
like
a
knox
box
on
the
building
that
we
need
to
get
to
and
and
basically
it
helps
us
respond
easier
and
better
to
the
emergency.
So.
C
A
C
Well,
we
have
a
pre-planned
sheet
here
and
basically
it
has
some
just
general
information
about
the
building
itself.
We
always
get
emergency
contact
information.
Then
we
have
things
like
building
size,
the
construction
type,
any
exits
around
the
building,
elevators
stairways
and
any
hazards
to
firefighters.
Okay.
So
that's
that's!
Basically,
what's
on
these
forums
and
what
we'll
look
at
okay.
A
C
C
Also
other
areas
we
looked
at,
including
the
sprinkler
room,
which
is
very
important
to
note
again.
We
want
to
tell
everyone
that
this
is
not
a
fire
inspection.
That's
what
the
inspection
department
is
for.
This
is
just
a
pre-plan.
However,
if
we
do
find
anything,
that's
terribly
wrong
or
anything
like
that,
we
may
make
mention
of
it
or
we
may
say
you
know
your
sprinkler
system
should
be
inspected
here
soon
but,
like
I
said
we
do
not
do
a
fire
inspection.
This
is
just
a
pre-plan.
C
Okay,
so
and
then
we've
looked
at
other
things
too.
We've
looked
at
the
exits
around
the
building
and
any
special
hazards.
We
noted
that
there
was
an
aed
in
the
building
which
is
important
to
know
that
bystander
may
be
using
that
if
we
have
an
emergency
here
and
basically
all
the
rest
of
the
information
we
have
written
down
here,.
C
A
C
We
were
looking
for
things
like
where
the
fire
department
can
connect
to
the
sprinkler
system.
Again
the
exits.
If
they're
clear.
On
the
back
side,
we
noted
there
was
a
dumpster
underneath
an
overhang.
Therefore,
if
we
had
an
emergency
with
that
dumpster
we
could
get
to
it.
We
would
find
it.
We
also
looked
at
access
just
to
the
building
in
general
and
good
points
for
firefighter
entry,
egress
things
like
that.
A
All
right
well,
thank
you
for
showing
me
how
this
works
I'll
hand,
this
back
to
you.
It's
gonna.
