city
council,
update
on
Monday
September
11th,
the
Athens
City
Council
met
in
committee
at
7:00
p.m.
the
meeting
began
with
a
committee
of
the
whole
kicking
off
the
night,
with
the
discussion
about
possible
city
financial
implications
involved
with
the
proposed
building
changes
to
the
Athens
City
Schools
council
member
Pappy
read
a
statement
acknowledging
community
concerns
and
the
emotions
attached
to
this
issue.

A
few
citizens
express
their
views
and
although
the
discussion
was
supposed
to
be
solely
about
financial
implications,
many
other
aspects
of
possible
changes
to
the
city
school
system
were
brought
into.
The
conversation
city
council
then
moved
on
to
a
brief
discussion
about
amending
the
rules
of
council.
The
committee
of
the
whole
was
then
closed.
Next
council
gave
the
floor
to
the
finance
and
Personnel
Committee.

This
committee
discussed
authorizing
the
auditor
to
reduce
year-end
appropriations
and
paying
off
the
fire
ladder
truck
in
the
community
center
energy
project
notes,
while
rolling
over
notes
on
the
fire
pumper
truck
the
wwt
P
improvements
and
the
wtp
improvements
design.
The
committee
then
discussed
a
couple
of
needed
appropriations
before
moving
on
to
the
Planning
and
Development
Committee.
This
committee
discussed
creating
a
housing
commission
consisting
of
city
officials,
a
university
official
and
several
citizens
to
explore
affordable
housing
in
Athens.

The
committee
also
talked
about
revising
the
tenant
occupant
education
forum,
the
Transportation
Committee
discussed
pedestrian
improvements
on
Richland
Avenue,
a
project
receiving
80%
grant
funding
from
the
state.
This
project
will
address
the
safety
of
the
Richland
crosswalk
with
the
construction
of
an
underground
pedestrian
walkway.
The
committee
also
discussed
a
street
closure
at
5:00
p.m.
on
September
26th,
with
the
September
27th
reign
date
for
the
annual
joint
Police
Advisory
Commission
barbecue.
The
barbecue
requires
closing
Park
Place
West
mulberry
and
a
portion
of
Court
Street.
A
The
final
committee
of
the
evening
was
the
city
and
safety
services
committee.
This
committee
spoke
about
the
water
treatment
plant
improvements
project
and
the
need
to
rebid
the
renovation
starts.
West
City
Council
meets
every
Monday
night
at
p.m.
on
the
third
floor
of
the
city
building.
