Description
Mayor's Press Conference - May 31, 2023
A
B
Happy
Wednesday
afternoon
it's
the
weekly
update
with
Kyle
Johansson
and
the
mayor
and
I
think
Kyle's
got
some
really
interesting
news
to
share
with
you
in
terms
of
the
forecast
for
the
next
seven
days
and
actually
the
near
side
of
the
next
seven
days.
What's
the
weather
going
to
be
Kyle
so.
C
C
C
B
All
right,
and
so
the
first
copperheads
game
is
going
to
be
pretty
decent
weather,
79
79.
Well,
it's
not
going
to
be
blazing
hot.
It
won't
be
the
90s
that'll,
be
great
anything
on
the
coveted
front
we
haven't
talked
about
covid
for
quite
a
while
nope.
B
B
Know
we
still
have
the
sewer
sampling,
the
viral
load
sampling
on
the
at
the
sewer
at
the
the
four
sites
that
the
city
has
the
one
at
the
wastewater
treatment
plant,
the
one
on
Richland
Avenue
by
the
library
and
Depot,
Street
and
I
think
currently
most
of
the
sites
are
at
the
undetectable
level
or
extremely
low.
So
that's
great
news.
B
Influenza
A
I
will
say,
though,
that
they
did
see
a
slight
increase
because
now
they're
looking
at
influenza,
A
and
B
and
influenza
A
was
showed
a
little
bit
of
a
creep
on
the
Richland
Avenue
site.
So
on
the
south
side
of
the
city,
there
must
be
some
some
form
of
the
flu
flowing
around
out
there.
So
interesting,
yeah
I
think
everyone
kind
of
knows
now
how
to
deal
with
that.
There
are
still
people
who
get
symptoms.
That's
severe.
B
Oh
yeah,
all
right,
it's
kind
of
a
late
news
week
or
update
week,
but
a
couple
things
that
are
going
on
around
the
city,
fire
hydrant
flushing
is
taking
place.
We
do
this
every
summer
the
streets
are
that
are
going
to
be
affected
by
the
hydrant
flushing.
This
week
is
Fort
Street
Mound,
Street,
Carpenter,
Fremont,
Pine,
Street
Congress
ring
Street,
Woodward,
Fairview,
Ellis
and
Boyd.
B
Speaking
about
reaching
out
to
different
city
entities
about
things
that
you
might
see,
I'm
still
going
to
continue
to
push
that
you
sign
up
for,
and
it's
easy
to
do,
it's
just
downloading
an
app
the
Athens
Ohio
City
Source
app.
You
know,
use
that
it's
great
for
being
able
to
report
things
that
you
may
see
in
the
city
that
are
either
non-functional
broken,
need
attention
or
need
correction
of
some
type.
So
you
know
again
you
can
go
to
Google
Play
or
to
the
Apple
App
Store
and
simple.
B
It's
free,
download
it
and
use
it
strongly
encourage
the
other
is
Nixle,
encouraging
people
to
use
nixel
as
well.
This
is
for
useful
and
important
timely
information
about
everything
from
weather
events
to
missing
persons,
criminal
activities
so
on
and
so
forth.
So
you
know
sign
up
for
nixel
as
well,
and
you
can
simply
text.
B
I
want
to
listen
to
the
weather,
I
want
to
look
at
criminal
activity
or
listen
to
criminal
activities
as
they
come
in
or
be
alerted
to
them,
or
maybe
you
know
be
in
the
in
the
loop
when
there's
an
amber
alert
that
is
deployed
out
there,
so
use
them.
They're
great
we've
mentioned
this
before
on
the
show,
and
that
is
the
college
green
tunnel
Rehabilitation
that's
going
on.
This
is
going
to
be
going
on
through
mid
August.
B
There
are
working
on
East,
Union
Street
right
now.
It's
closed
between
North
College,
Street
and
East
Green
Drive.
To
allow
for
the
completion
of
the
tunnel.
Rehab
I
know
that
I
was
going
to
the
Patton
College
of
Education
to
go,
see
my
wife
the
other
day
and
saw
the
signs
that
were
posted
for
local
traffic.
Only
because
Jeff
Hill's
street
is
closed,
at
least
on
the
Steep
portion
of
of
East
Union
I'll
save
that
for
a
minute,
walk
talk
and
roll.
We've
talked
about
this
before
and
there's
all
the
impertinent
information
for
you.
B
You
know
you
can
register
online
opens
at
5am
in
person
at
the
city,
Athens
City,
Pool,
that's
at
10,
A.M
or
you
can
go
to
the
community
center.
That's
at
9am.
For
for
taking
these
swimming
lessons
registration
for
session
one
begins.
Well,
it
began
Monday,
so
swim.
Lessons
take
advantage
of
those
next
week,
I
will
be
in
Fort
Collins
Colorado,
fulfilling
my
responsibilities
as
the
president
of
the
international
town,
gown
Association
at
the
annual
conference
in
Fort
Collins.
B
So
that
will
be
interesting
to
learn
what
other
communities
that
are
have
large
or
small
universities
or
colleges
other
university
communities,
things
that
they
are
using
as
best
practices
and
as
usual,
I
try
to
steal
as
many
ideas
that
I
think
would
fit
within
our
own
environment
as
possible
and
bring
them
home.
So
next
week
we
will
not
be
doing
a
weekly
update
with
Kyle
Johansson
and
the
mayor,
but
we
will
the
following
week
after
that.
B
So
that's
going
to
be
happening.
It
will
be
a
really
fascinating
event,
because
the
U.S
agency
on
International,
Development
usaid,
is
orchestrating
this
partnership
between
the
two
communities.
So
there
will
be
an
official
signing
virtually,
but
we
will
be
able
to
broadcast
it
between
the
Ukraine
mayor
of
austro
and
myself
as
well
as
hopefully
other
dignitaries
on
both
sides
of
the
pond
that
are
involved
in
that
process.
B
So
that's
pretty
pretty
cool
this
marks,
or
tomorrow,
I
should
say
Mark's
the
beginning
of
pride
month
and
as
Kyle
kindly
reminded
me,
we
also
had
Juneteenth
coming
up
in
the
month
of
June.
C
B
But
yeah
it
should
be
the
19th,
but
it's
the
17th.
So
there
will
be
the
pride
parade
here
in
the
city
of
Athens
and
that'll,
be
at
10
A.M
on.
Let
me
see
here
it
will
be
on
the
10th.
B
It
will
be
from
Alden
the
Baker
Center
side
of
Alden
Library
down
Court
Street,
Court
Street
to
Washington
Washington
to
college
and
then
College
Street
terminating
at
the
college.
Green
again,
that'll
be
start
time
is
10
a.m.
So
that'll
be
interesting
to
come
out
and
support
all
the
revelers
who
will
be
in
the
pride
parade
and
since
tomorrow
is
the
beginning
of
pride
month.
I
have
a
proclamation
that
I
want
to
read
to
all
of
you,
and
that
is
Office
of
the
mayor
Proclamation.
B
Whereas
the
city
of
Athens
is
committed
to
creating
a
community
that
is
inclusive
of
all
identities
and
intersections
of
identities.
And
whereas
the
city
of
Athens
has
been
and
continues
to
be,
a
proud
supporter
and
participant
in
the
Athens,
Pride
Fest.
And
whereas
the
city
of
Athens
recognizes
the
need
to
continue
to
foster
a
community
in
which
all
people
feel
a
sense
of
belonging
and
can
express
themselves
without
fear,
shame
threat
of
violence.
B
And
whereas
the
city
of
Athens
is
committed
to
supporting
those
impacted
by
violence
and
to
to
collaboratively
work
throughout
the
city
to
End,
anti-lgbtq,
plus
attacks
of
any
kind.
And
whereas
the
city
of
Athens
celebrates
the
lives,
experiences
contributions
of
lgbtq
plus
individuals
to
the
vibrancy
of
our
community,
not
only
during
the
month
of
June
but
throughout
the
year.
B
We
must
also
acknowledge
that
the
Need,
For
Education
awareness
and
an
open
mind
remains
vital
to
ending
discrimination
and
Prejudice.
Now,
therefore,
I
Steve
Patterson,
the
mayor
of
the
great
city
of
Athens
Ohio,
do
declare
June
of
2023
as
not
as
Athens
pride
month
and
encourage
all
residents
to
respect
honor
and
celebrate
the
ongoing
efforts
to
actualize
that
genuine
equality
truly
means
all
are
equal
all
right
month.
B
Kyle.
Thank
you
as
usual
for
joining
me
and
thank
you
to
all
of
you
who
may
be
watching
or
watching
this
in
the
future,
because
you
can
watch
this
either
live
or
on
rotation,
on
the
government
Channel
or
in
YouTube,
or
on
Facebook.
Thanks
for
joining
us,
and
please
join
us
again
in
two
weeks
for
the
next
weekly
update
with
Kyle
Johansson.
The
mayor
take
care.
B
You
know
our
mission
is
to
decarbonize
ourselves.
As
best
we
can
City
Council
made
the
push
to
reduce
our
carbon
emissions
by
50
percent
by
2030.
I.
Think
with
this
solar
array
is
actually
going
to.
You
know,
help
us
achieve
that
goal,
and
then
some
we
had
a
groundbreaking
for
the
Kokosing
solar
project
down
by
the
community
center
and
the
City
swimming
pool,
which
is
going
to
be
a
2.5
2.4
megawatt
solar
array
that
will
be
powering
about
60
of
the
energy
to
the
wastewater
treatment
plant,
the
community
center,
the
pool
during
the
summer
months.
B
Of
course,
that
won't
be
this
year.
But
next
year,
when
it's
operational
and
a
couple
other
government
accounts,
but
third
son
is
our
local.
Solar
provider
has
partnered
now
with
cacosing,
which
is
the
56th
largest
contractor
construction
firm
in
the
United
States.
So
with
the
caucousing
solar
project,
it
has
several
different
components
to
it.
There's
going
to
be
a
solar
array
in
front
of
the
City
swimming
pool.
B
B
At
the
end
of
the
20-year
agreement,
the
city
then,
will
start
to
control
that
when
we
did
the
renovation
at
the
water
treatment
plant
decided
to
fold
into
that
project,
solar
down
there
at
the
water
treatment
plant,
where
we've
got
178
kilowatt
solar
array
down
there,
we
also
have
down
there
a
backup
battery
system
to
where,
during
the
day
it
is
charging
batteries.
And
then,
during
the
evening,
these
batteries
can
feed
into
the
water
treatment
plant
as
well.
