Description
Mayor's Press Conference - October 21, 2021
A
Good
afternoon
welcome
once
again
to
the
weekly
update
and
press
conference
with
the
mayor
and
kyle
johansen
kyle,
just
like
you
said
at
our
last
press
conference
that
the
temperatures
were
dropping
down,
and
I
remember
the
you
mentioned
the
following
tuesday
or
the
following
day
of
the
last
press
conference
that
it
was
going
to.
You
know,
change
by
more
than
20
degrees
and
it
absolutely
did
kyle.
What
are
we
looking
for
over
the
next
seven
days.
B
B
next
to
say
higher
61
low
46,
mostly
cloudy
and
next
wednesday,
probably
quality
high
of
69
low
51.
and
all
you
have
forex,
there's
been
the
soccer
team
won
against
kent
state
in
five
sets
at
the
capitol
last
night.
We
got
soccer
at
4
p.m.
This
afternoon,
volleyball
tomorrow,
7
p.m,
field
hockey,
2
p.m,
football
and
volleyball
on
saturday,
and
then
we
got
one
more
soccer
game
next
thursday
dream
days
before
halloween
and
we
got
basketball
season
only
16
more
days
away
and
last
weekend.
A
B
Daylight
settings
time
weekend,
16
days
away
in
public
cases
in
athens
county.
There
are
now
419
after
the
cases
which
is
down
significantly,
then
we
were
at
four
or
five
weeks
ago,
which
were
over
a
thousand
of
them
during
labor
day
weekend.
If
this
trends
continue,
we
should
be
down
to
less
than
300
corporate
cases
by
the
end
of
november
or
maybe
as
early
as
mid-november.
A
And
you
know
kyle
thinking
back
on
last
year.
You
know
the
deaths
from
covet
19
here
in
athens,
county
were
were
relatively
low
for
a
long
long
period
of
time,
and
then
they
certainly
picked
up
and
over
the
past
couple
weeks.
I
know
that
we've
seen
significant
increases
in
deaths
due
to
covet
19,
but
I'm
with
you
it's
great
seeing
the
new
case
numbers
decrease,
which
then
lends
themselves
to
the
overall
active
cases
continue
to
decrease.
A
The
thing
that
that
I'm
still
struck
by
is
that
we're
still
only
at
45
percent
of
our
population,
45.15
percent.
Again
as
of
yesterday
for
people
who
are
completely
vaccinated,
the
boosters
have
been
authorized.
I
know
pfizer
has
for
a
while,
but
now
moderna
and
johnson
johnson.
A
And
johnson
are
all
approved
for
their
boosters,
we're
still
patiently
waiting
on
the
five
to
11
year
old
group
to
be
able
to
get
the
vaccination.
But
again
I
I
I
implore
you
to
go
and
get
vaccinated
ryan.
If
you
want
to
there,
you
go
throw
that
back
up
again.
Is
that
you
know
you
can
get
these
and
pretty
simply
and
easily.
A
A
It's
effective
bear
in
mind
that
the
city's
face
mask
ordinance
is
still
still
in
place,
and
I
know
that
we've
received
a
number
of
phone
calls
from
individuals,
reporting
people
not
wearing
masks
in
businesses
and
the
police
department
you
know,
does
follow
up
on
those
when
the
reports
come
in
some
other
things
around
the
city.
A
Let
me
start
with
some
engineering
and
public
works
items.
The
2021
street
improvement
schedule
east
park
drive
is
going
to
be
repaved,
that
is
that
started
wednesday
and
will
be
completed
by
friday,
the
22nd
you
know
we
knew
that
there
was
significant
damage
to
east
park
drive.
A
It
was
on
the
paving
schedule,
one
of
the
things
that
we're
being
a
little
hesitant
on
with
getting
that
street
done
too
early,
knowing
that
there
was
still
construction
taking
place
down
at
the
wastewater
treatment
plant
with
the
new
dewatering
system
and
didn't
want
to
tear
it
up
with
large
trucks
rolling
on
it.
You
know
after
having
paved
it,
but
we
feel
that
we're
far
enough
into
the
season
and
that
construction
project
to
to
make
that
happen.
So
that's
great
the
stimson
avenue
project.
A
You
know
you've
seen
tremendous
progress
over
the
past
week
or
two
with
the
sidewalks
being
poured
a
lot
of
the
sidewalk
is
in.
There
was
pouring
today
as
I
drove
down
stimson
avenue
the
base
course,
and
the
mid
course
have
already
been
laid
for
asphalt.
So
that's
in
place
and
work
will
continue.
There's
a
lot
of
moving
pieces
to
this,
but
it
looks
like
the
the
top
coat
the
driving
surface.
A
A
I
also
encourage
people
to
continue
to
frequent
the
businesses
up
and
down
stimson
avenue,
as
they
are
all
open,
but
certainly
the
construction
and
all
the
challenges
have
had
an
impact
on
those
businesses,
lloyd
street
closure.
This
will
take
place
again.
The
20th,
which
was
yesterday
through
the
22nd
for
brick,
repair
no
through
traffic
or
emergency
traffic
on
lloyd
street,
so
that
should
be
wrapped
up
by
tomorrow,
armitage
road
bike
path.
A
This
is
the
spur
the
path
closure
this
started
today
and
will
run
through
tomorrow.
This
is
for
a
water
line
installation
on
the
bike
path,
so
this
is
armitage
road
up
to
university
of
states,
boulevard
that
the
bike
path
spur
is
closed.
That
goes
up
to
university
estates,
the
athens
fire
department.
This
is
pretty
cool
starting
monday
and
running
through
october
30th.
A
The
from
9am
to
7pm,
the
fire
department
is
going
to
be
giving
out,
giving
away
smoke
detectors
they
received
50,
free
smoke,
detectors
and
we'll
be
giving
them
out.
These
are
free,
while
supplies
last
one
per
household.
A
One
of
the
notes
that
is
important.
These
do
not
meet
the
code
regulations
for
rental
housing,
so
these
cannot
be
picked
up
by
landlords
and
put
into
the
rental
units
because
they
don't
meet
code,
but
they
are
smoke,
detectors
so
come
on
down
to
61
columbus
road
and
as
well
454
richland
avenue
so
headquarters
and
fire
station
two.
A
They
will
give
you
a
smoke
detector
for
the
fire
departments.
You
do
have
to
ring
the
doorbell
because
of
their
coven
precautions
before
they
come
to
the
door,
so
it
they
are
locked
the
leaf
schedule,
ryan.
I
know
that
you've
got
the
graphic
for
the
street
schedule
somewhere
there.
It
is.
This
is
just
a
reminder.
A
So
it
looks
like
going
into
next
week:
they
will
continue
up
in
the
oakmont
old
coach,
south
side
areas
and
sweeping
everywhere,
and
then
they
will
go
back
on
october,
1st,
through
the
5th
or
november
1st.
Through
the
5th,
they
will
be
going
back
and
kind
of
redoing
their
loop
again
that
during
that
week
they
will
be
over
on
the
north
side
near
north
east
or
near
east
side,
and
the
far
east
neighborhoods
picking
up
leaves.
So
it's
a
it's
a
great
service.
A
In
my
opinion,
the
other
great
service
that
we
have
is
holiday
tree
pickup.
So
just
getting
this
in
your
minds
way
ahead
of
time,
even
though
we
haven't
even
hit
halloween
yet
let
alone
thanksgiving,
but
the
tree
pickup.
It
will.
You
know,
begin
december,
27th
of
2021
and
roll
into
january
to
january
28th
of
2022.
A
If
you
want
to
have
your
holiday
tree
removed,
trick-or-treating,
so
city
of
athens
trick-or-treat,
it
will
be
sunday
october.
31St
we've
talked
about
this
before
from
5
30
to
7
pm.
You
know
so
the
guidelines,
as
we
posted
for
last
year
and
likely
years
before
is
you
know,
leave
your
your
porch
light
on.
If
you're
giving
out
candy,
you
know
have
visible
costumes
for
your
kids
when
you're
out
going
door
to
door.
A
You
know
please
look
out
for
traffic,
you
know
we
have
trick-or-treating
over
in
the
south
side,
neighborhoods
trick-or-treating
in
the
far
east
neighborhood,
certainly
in
the
near
east
neighborhoods,
I
would
say
the
near
east
neighborhood,
followed
by
the
far
east
neighborhood,
are
probably
the
see
the
heaviest
foot
traffic
of
kids,
yet
their
streets
are
still
open
to
traffic,
so
just
be
careful
with
the
little
ones.
Parents
and
guardians
are
are
required
for
kids
under
the
age
of
12.
A
A
A
This
will
be
at
the
community
center
park
behind
the
community
center.
In
the
field
we
have
an
inflatable
screen,
which
is
amazing,
and
we
will
be
showing
the
addams
family
2019
version.
You
know,
bring
a
blanket,
bring
some
chairs
whatever
you
want
and
come
in
your
costume.
A
It's
there's
going
to
be
rock
and
reggie
is
going
to
be
playing
from
6
30
to
I
imagine,
all
the
way
up
to
eight
o'clock,
maybe
a
little
bit
less
than
that,
but
this
is
a
really
fun
open
space
outdoors
event
for
people
to
enjoy
on
the
29th.
A
A
A
Received
a
distinguished
award,
I
would
say
that
the
city
of
athens
is
being
recognized
by
an
association
of
structural
engineers,
engineering
and
here
in
south
or
central
ohio.
We
received
the
2020
project
of
the
year
for
a
project
in
the
category
of
construction
costs
being
less
than
5
million.
A
You
know
two
years
ago,
so
this
would
have
been
2019
and
she
said
it's
just
so
amazing
to
see
the
project
completed
with
the
original
pedestrian
passageway
and
how
safe
it
is
now
to
get
from
the
west
green
over
to
baker
center
porter
hall
bird
arena
grover
center,
margaret
walter
hall
name
a
place.
So
it
was
fun
to
have
that
communication
with
someone
who
remembered
it
just
being
a
conceptual
passageway
to
it
now
being
completed
and
and
even
more
interesting
was.
A
This
person
was
gone
throughout
the
whole
pandemic
period
of
of
2020
and
up
to
2021,
and
so
you
know
when
school
was
not
in
session.
This
individual
never
had
a
chance
to
see
it.
So
probably
not
a
bad
thing,
because
a
lot
of
that
was
construction
getting
that
project
wrapped
up,
so
it
was
fun,
fun,
fun,
dialogue,
the
other
thing
just
to
mention
real
quick.
I
was
recognized.
A
This
is
rather,
nice
came
from
the
national
league
of
cities,
where
I
was
I'm
being
recognized
for
2021,
as
serving
as
the
chair
for
the
national
league
of
cities,
university
communities,
council,
which
I
have
really
enjoyed
serving
in
that
capacity,
especially
through
a
pandemic
and
and
especially
during
a
period
where
a
lot
of
university
communities
across
the
nation
all
experiencing
serious
concerns
over
their
census
counts
because
a
large
portion
of
their
population
was
not
here
during
the
enumeration
process,
and
I
sat
in
on
many
many
a
meeting
with
the
bureau,
the
census
bureau
in
washington
dc
and
addressed
our
concerns
with
them,
and
we
had
several
successes
and,
but
by
and
large
I
think,
a
lot
of
university
communities,
most
notably
state
college,
pennsylvania,
east
lansing,
michigan
and
and
others
even
here
in
the
city
of
athens,
albeit
we've
grown
since
2010
by
17
people.
A
The
the
last
thing
I
have
for
today
anyway,
is
a
proclamation,
and
this
is
a
fun
proclamation.
I
have
proclaimed
this
event
many
times
in
the
past,
and
so
let
me
read
this
office
of
the
mayor
proclamation,
whereas
the
athens,
international,
film
and
video
festival
founded
in
1974,
has
shown
resilience
and
persistence
through
the
2020
2021
pandemic,
having
been
twice
postponed
in
service
to
keeping
the
public
at
large,
safe
and
whereas
the
festival
has
embraced.
A
Now,
therefore,
I
steve
patterson,
the
mayor
of
the
city
of
athens,
do
hereby
proclaim
october
15th
through
the
24th
as
the
47th
and
the
48th
athens
international
film
and
video
festival,
and
ask
all
of
our
citizens
to
celebrate
and
enjoy
the
art
of
film
and
the
hard
work
and
dedication
of
filmmakers
to
be
shared
and
screened
at
the
athena
cinema
kyle
as
usual.
Thank
you,
sir,
for
joining
me
we'll
have
to
do
a
remote
one
of
these
days
in
the
near
future
before
it
gets
too
cold.
