Description
Mayor's Weekly Update - May 12, 2021
A
Good
afternoon
and
welcome
once
again
to
the
athens
weekly
update
with
the
mayor
and
kyle
johansen
kyle,
it's
absolutely
gorgeous
outside
and
please
tell
me
that.
That's
the
way
it's
going
to
be
for
the
remainder
of
the
summer,
but
that's
highly
unlikely.
B
So
right
now
it's
62
degrees.
A
frost
advisory
is
in
effect
from
1.
00
am
to
9
a.m.
On
first
so,
temperatures
around
35
degrees
today,
probably
cloudy
high
of
63
tonight,
mostly
clear,
low
35
scatter
frost
possible
tomorrow,
mostly
sunny
high
of
67
tomorrow
night,
is
probably
cloudy
12
39
friday,
mostly
sunny.
A
Tent
over
your
plants
or
bring
them
indoors
or
whatever,
if
you
don't
want,
if
you
don't
want
to
lose
them,
so
kyle
bring
us
up
to
date
on
all
things
covered,
19.
B
So
there
have
been
now
1449
new
chronovirus
case
in
the
state
of
ohio
in
the
last
24
hours.
Thanks
brings
a
total
of
1
million
90
thousand
cases,
19
000
deaths,
nationwide,
33
million
cases,
184
000
deaths
globally,
200
million
cases
in
3.1
million
deaths
and
the
fda
has
authorized
the
immersion
use
for
kids
aged
12
to
15
and
then
by
september,
1.
The
fda
will
up
approve
their
vaccines
for
ages,
6
to
11
year
olds.
A
Which
will
be
so
helpful
if
that
stays
on
track?
To
that
point,
we
do
have
a
vaccination
clinic
this
saturday,
the
15th
of
may
from
8
30
to
12
p.m,
it's
walk-ins
or
by
appointment.
This
is
great.
This
is
down
at
heritage
hall,
which
is
located
on
west
union.
A
So
we
are
continually
strongly
encouraging
people
to
go
and
get
their
vaccine.
You
can
park
across
the
street.
It
is
free
to
park
there
and
if
you
have
limited
mobility,
they
also
do
have
ada
parking
down
at
heritage
hall,
so
take
advantage.
I
mean
why
wouldn't
you
this
is
really
important
and
then
to
kyle's
point
with
the
most
recent
change,
which
is
individuals.
Age
12
to
15
are
now
authorized
to
receive.
A
The
vaccine
here
is
the
most
recent
fda
flyer
that
the
pfizer
vaccine
is
the
one
that
has
been
approved
for
12
to
15
year
olds,
so
we
will
see
this
option
coming
available
soon.
I
believe
here
in
this,
the
city
of
athens
in
athens,
county
and
again
encourage
parents
to
bring
your
12
to
15
year
olds
down
to
receive
the
vaccine.
So
I
I
view
this
as
a
as
a
great
step
forward,
as
we
continue
to
inoculate
vaccinate
our
community
against
the
covid19
virus.
A
The
sports
kyle
talk
to
us
about,
what's
going
on
in
the
world
of
ou
athletics,.
B
It's
all
softball
wrap
up
their
away
and
home
games
by
through
the
30th
of
this
month,
baseball.
So
following
that
same
time
frame,
then
no
copperhead
season
this
summer
by
august
field,
hockey
soccer
will
start
up
with
in-person
fans
in
the
deadline
for
football
season
renew
tickets,
it's
may
31,
which
is
memorial
day
weekend,
and
then
next
year
the
copperheads
will
be
back
in
person.
There'll
be
a
big
celebration
to
see
a
defense
in
the
first
time
since
2019,
the
pre-covert
time
frame
has
begun.
A
B
Heaven
and
that's
quite
our
cases
are
going
down
to
between
20
and
30
000
cases
a
day
nationwide.
First
time
since
september,.
A
So
good
numbers
to
be
to
be
hearing
about,
so
thank
you,
kyle
you're,
welcome,
see
you
next
week
see
you
next
week.
Kyle
of
course,
kyle
gives
me
the
hourly
countdown
as
to
when
our
press
conference
is,
and
I
appreciate
that
kyle
as
kyle
indicated,
frost
advisory
until
nine
a.m
tomorrow.
A
So,
if
you
have
delicate
plants
outside
encouraging
you
to
either
cover
them
up
or
if
you
can
bring
them
indoors,
my
wife
and
I
spent
a
lot
of
time
yesterday
because
we
were
fearful
that
we
were
going
to
have
frost
this
morning
and
then
covered
up
other
plants
that
were
too
heavy
to
migrate
inside
our
house.
So
keep
that
in
mind,
arts
parks
and
recreation
department.
A
I
know
that
we've
got
several
things
going
on
down
there.
They
still
have
five
lifeguard
positions
to
be
filled,
so
we're
encouraging
people
to
apply
to
those
for
the
summer
swim
season.
Applicants
do
not
need
to
have
a
life
card
certification
to
apply
that
the
arts,
parks
and
rec
can
assist
with
getting
their
needed
certifications.
A
Www.Ci.Athens.Oh.Us.480
city
of
athens,
jobs,
city
dash
of
dash
athens-jobs,
and
it
should
be
right
there
in
front
of
you
other
things
under
the
world
of
arts
parks
and
rec.
The
registration
is
currently
going
on
for
youth,
t-ball,
coach
pitch
and
summer.
Smart
baseball,
it's
35
dollars
per
child
to
register.
You
can
stop
at
the
community
center
or
you
can
call
them
at
592-3325.
A
The
t-ball
and
coach
information
t-ball
is
ages.
Five
and
six
coach
pitch
is
seven
and
nine
and
registration
will
run
through
may
31st.
So
you
still
have
time.
T-Ball
will
play
mondays
and
wednesdays,
5
30
to
6,
30
p.m,
and
then
coach
pitch
will
be
tuesdays
and
thursdays
for
the
same
time
frame.
5
30
to
6,
30.
games
and
practices
will
all
be
at
the
west
state
street
ball
fields.
A
Practices
will
run
from
june
7th
through
the
18th,
and
the
games
will
go
from
june
21st
through
july
22nd,
so
make
sure
you
take
advantage
of
that
registration
is
now
open
for
swim.
Lessons
at
the
athens
city
pool
there.
You
have
it
session
one
through
session
four
and
the
available
times,
as
you
can
see
on
the
flyer,
is
9
30
to
10.
05
am
10
15
to
10
50
a.m
and
then,
in
the
evening,
as
well,
7
15
to
7
50.
A
A
You
can
see
the
pricing
for
the
swim,
lessons
forty
dollars
per
child
per
session,
aqua,
tots,
35
per
child
per
session,
and
then
adaptive
35
in
junior
lifeguarding
is
60
dollars
per
child
per
session.
You
can
again
reach
out
to
the
to
arts
parks
and
rec
at
592-3325
and
get
yourself
signed
up
for
those.
A
I
also
want
to
note
on
this
flyer
the
new
logo
for
arts
parks
and
recreation
here
in
the
city
of
athens,
which
is
very
tastefully
designed
and
capturing
a
lot
of
what
is
the
essence
of
athens
from
bicycle
riding
mountains,
water
and
even
a
paintbrush.
For
those
of
you
who
are
artists,
let's
see
some
other
things
to
make
note
of,
and
that
is
that
the
athens
municipal
arts
commission
will
be
meeting
the
this
evening
at
5,
30
5
30
to
7.
A
A
I
have
a
proclamation
actually
before
I
get
to
the
proclamation,
I
want
to
share
something:
that's
hot
off
the
press.
As
of
yesterday
afternoon,
I
received
notification
from
the
us
environmental
protection
agency
and
we
are
being
recognized
as
a
city
that
has
gone
to
great
lengths
to
reduce
the
health
impacts
of
air
emissions
through
the
use
of
green
power.
This
is
all
based
upon
metrics
that
the
epa
received.
A
That
spoke
to
our
residential
commercial,
as
well
as
municipal,
green
energy
efforts,
alternative
energy
efforts
and
with
that
we
have
reduced
our
carbon
emissions
significantly
by
increasing
our
green
energy
use
and
a
lot
of
that
comes
through
the
the
sustainable
ohio
public
energy
council,
formerly
southeast
ohio,
public
energy
council,
which
has
a
residential
green
product
to
where
it's
100
renewable
energy
for
our
electric
here
in
the
city
of
athens
that
played
into
it,
as
did
a
number
of
other
things.
So
this
was
great
news.
It
was
again
unbeknownst
to
me.
A
I
have
a
proclamation
that
I
would
like
to
read,
and
this
is
a
proclamation
recognizing
today,
as
athens
lions
day,
actually
it'll
be
this
saturday
may
15th,
but
regardless
office
of
the
mayor
proclamation,
whereas
in
1947.
A
Two
gentlemen
in
wellston,
ohio
approached
walter
cornwell
at
his
jewelry
store
and
discussed
the
need
of
a
lions
club
in
athens.
Mr
cornwell
was
able
to
gather
together
19
other
local
business
owners
who
realized
that
they
could
get
much
more
done
together
than
they
could
individually
and
joined
him.
A
The
last
thing
I
wanted
to
bring
up
was
that
it
was
kind
of
a
bittersweet
city
council
member
city
council,
meeting
last
monday
to
where
former
city
council
member
beth
claudefelter
announced
that
she
would
be
stepping
down
from
her
current
term
as
a
city
council
member
at
large,
to
take
on
a
position
as
the
liaison
governmental
liaison
with
senator
sherrod
brown's
office.
A
Beth.
You
will
be
missed
on
council
for
sure.
I
will
continue
to
to
engage
with
beth
claude
felder
in
her
new
capacity,
because
the
mayor's
partnership
for
progress,
of
which
I
am
the
president
of
representing
18
appalachian
counties
going
from
tuscarora's
county
all
the
way
down
to
lawrence
county
and
from
mig's
county
over
to
highland
county.
A
A
So
thank
you
for
all
your
hard
work
as
a
legislator
for
the
city
of
athens
beth,
and
I
wish
you
the
best
as
senator
sherrod,
brown's
liaison
for
a
large
swath
of
the
state
of
ohio.
So
good
luck
to
you,
that's
all
I
have
for
today.
Thank
you
for
tuning
in
and
please
join
me
and
kyle
johansen
next
week
for
the
next
installment
of
the
athens
weekly
update
with
the
mayor.
