Description
Mayor's Press Conference - July 28, 2021
A
You
know
we
had
a
really
great
opportunity
and
that
opportunity
is
here
in
athens
as
the
vietnam
veterans
memorial
fund
program
has
the
wall
that
heals
that
rolled
into
athens,
and
I
think
that
we've
got
a
short
clip
to
show
of
the
the
ceremonial
entrance
into
the
city
of
athens
of
the
wall
that
heals
the
wall
of
the
heels
is
the
vietnam
monument
a
replica
of
roughly
the
same
size
as
the
vietnam
memorial
in
washington
dc,
and
there
you
see
it
rolling
in
in
the
semi,
as
well
as
the
motorcycle
escort
that
rolled
into
athens
yesterday
afternoon,
around
2
2
30.
A
that
that
memorial
wall
is
now
down
at
tailgate
park
at
ohio
university
campus
at
the
corner
of
richland
avenue
and
shaffer
south
shaffer.
So
I
spent
the
morning
as
a
volunteer
to
help
assemble
the
wall,
and
it
will
be
fully
assembled
by
later
on
this
afternoon
and
will
be
open
for
people
to
come
and
experience
the
wall
that
heals
tomorrow.
A
It
will
be
open.
24,
7.,
so
it'll
be
staffed,
24
7..
So,
even
if
you're
a
night
owl
and
you
three
o'clock
in
the
morning,
you
want
to
go
and
pay
your
respects
or
experience
the
wall
that
heals
you
can
do
that,
and
there
will
be
people
in
attendance
down
there.
Staff
volunteer
staff
that
will
be
down
there
to
make
sure
that
they
can
inform
you
about
different
elements
associated
with
the
wall
that
heals.
So
this
is
really
pretty
cool.
A
It'll
stay
in
place
until
the
first
till
sunday
at
2
pm,
we
will
begin
disassembling
the
wall
and
it
will
head
on
to
some
other
city.
I
believe
it
came
here
from
somewhere
else
in
ohio
has
been
traveling
across
the
nation.
So
it's
quite
the
experience.
It
was
quite
the
experience
in
helping
to
set
it
up
this
morning,
so
encouraging
everyone
to
come
and
enjoy
it.
A
I
will
say
this:
it
was
a
little
toasty
at
the
time
I
was
down
there,
setting
it
up
and
I'm
sure
it's
going
to
be
a
little
bit
continued
to
be
toasty
today.
Kyle
so
give
us
an
idea
as
to
what
the
seven-day
forecast
is
going
to
look
like.
B
B
saturday,
probably
cloudy
high
of
80
low
59
sunday,
high
of
81
and
low
of
56.,
probably
cloudy
skies
monday,
mostly
sunny
high
of
80
and
a
low
of
56
degrees
to
stay
high
53
and
a
low
of
58,
with
mostly
sunny
skies,
and
next
one
is
stable
for
mostly
sunny
skies,
the
height
of
84
in
the
low
59
degrees
and
covered
cases
in
the
state
of
ohio.
Today,
it's
been
now
1456
new
positive
chronovirus
case
in
the
state
in
ohio
in
the
last
24
hours.
That's
the
biggest
stream.
B
We
have
seen
in
nearly
60
to
65
days
due
to
this
delta
variant,
which
is
one
thousand
times
greater
than
the
normal
virus
in
the
other
variants
around
and
please
everybody
wear
your
mask
and
doors.
Unless
we
get
this
curved
back
down
into
the
right
direction
and
in
sports
soccer
begins
in
two
weeks
from
tomorrow
at
chesterfield
at
4pm,.
A
So
speaking
of
sports
in
setting
up
the
wall
that
heals
there
were
several
members
of
the
varsity
wrestling
team
that
were
helping
set
up
the
wall
and
had
a
great
conversation
with
them
and
that
they're
really
excited
that
they
will
be
having
a
season
this
year.
I
think
wrestling
matches
will
begin
in
early
early
november
and
maybe
late
october
and
will
continue
through
december.
A
So
I
know
they're
really
excited
about
getting
back,
but
as
kyle
indicated,
you
know
it
is
so
vitally
important
for
everyone
to
be
coveted
safe.
A
You
know
we
are
tracking
the
numbers
here
in
athens
county
and,
like
elsewhere
across
the
united
states.
We
technically
are
not
a
hot
spot
at
this
point
in
time,
I
think
the
closest
area
that
is
of
concern
is
kentucky
close
to
ohio.
That
is
so,
as
kyle
indicated,
you
know.
Still.
A
If,
if
you
aren't
vaccinated,
you
know
you,
you
need
for
your
own
safety
to
wear
a
mask,
wear
a
face
covering,
and
even
I
find
myself
more
and
more
now
walking
around
you
know
with
with
one
of
these
in
my
hand
or
on
my
person
to
where,
if
I
know,
there's
going
to
be
a
large
group
of
people,
I
can
feel
personally
completely
comfortable
putting
that
mask
back
on
again.
A
Speaking
of
you
know,
to
continue
to
remind
people
that
it
is
easy,
it's
safe
to
get
the
vaccine.
The
athens
city
county
health
department
is
setting
up
individual
appointments.
If
you
choose
to
get
the
covid19
vaccine,
I
don't
know
exactly
which
type
it
is,
whether
it's
moderna
or
pfizer
or
j
j,
but
they
have
it
and
you
can
call
them
quite
easily
at
740-592-4430
and
set
up
an
appointment
to
have
an
individual
vaccination
appointment.
It's
free.
You
know
you
know
and
they're
asking.
Please
bring
your
health
insurance
card.
A
If
you
have
one
but
get
the
vaccine,
they
also,
it
is
pfizer
that
they
offer
for
ages,
12
and
up
as
well
as
j
and
j
for
people
that
are
18
and
older.
I
think
we're
all
kyle.
Aren't
we
anxiously
awaiting
to
see
what
the
the
cdc
rules
in
terms
of
the
younger
age
cohorts
being
able
to
get
the
vaccination?
You
know
age
six
plus,
but
we
have
not
heard
anything.
A
A
Also
related
to
covet
19
is
that
hapcap,
the
hocking
athens
perry
community
action
has
put
out
a
press
release,
and
that
is
that
local
transit
programs
are
offering
free
rides
for
those
getting
the
covet
19
vaccination
and
have
set
up
appointments
to
get
the
vaccine
so
yeah,
that's
easy
to
do.
You
know
call
for
rides.
Rides
can
be
scheduled
by
calling
five
nine
seven
two
four
zero
four
athens
area
code.
740
again,
you
can
call
them
at.
A
740-597-2404
or
you
can
visit
athensondemand.com
and
set
up
a
ride,
there's
how
these
rides
are
available.
Friday,
monday,
through
friday,
looks
like
8
30
to
3
30
p.m.
8
30
a.m,
to
3
30..
So,
really,
there's
no
excuse
hop
the
free
bus
to
get
vaccinated.
A
A
I'm
sorry,
10
pm,
not
10
a.m,
10
p.m,
to
6
a.m,
and
it's
july
25th
through
july
30th,
as
we've
been
informed,
they
will
likely
be
doing
this
for
three
weeks
and
then
they
will
go
back
to
just
daytime
construction.
They've
also
included
saturdays.
So
please
be
careful
on
stimson
avenue
during
the
weekend
in
particular
saturday,
because
they
there
will
be
construction
taking
place
down
there
in
that
area.
Work.
The
10p
to
6a
work
is
going
to
be
occurring
between
cornwell
and
kern
street
on
stimson.
A
So
again
keep
that
in
mind
and
as
usual,
if
you
have
any
questions
about
this
project
or
any
other
that
is
related
to
engineering
and
public
works,
please
call
593,
seven,
six,
three,
six,
the
2021
street
improvement
schedule.
This
is
the
paving
mckee
paving,
is
going
to
be
and
is
currently
doing
our
milling
and
paving
in
various
locations
around
the
city.
A
A
They
will
also
be
doing
some
crack
seal
this
year
in
various
locations
around
the
city,
but
it's
also
just
good
to
remind
everyone
that
that
is
the
milling
schedule
for
2021
speaking
of
athens
transit
with
those
free
rides
for
people
who
have
a
scheduled
vaccination
appointment
as
that
they
are
experiencing
some
some
challenges
with
with
cdl
certified
drivers
and
with
that
they've
had
to
temporarily
change
some
of
their
transit
lines
in
particular
line
five
to
where
effective
immediately
the
public
transit
is
extending
the
suspension
of
the
morning
route
of
line
five.
A
B
A
Bus
line
six,
it's
always
good
to
remind
people
about
the
double
map,
app
the
double
map,
app,
that's
a
tongue
twister.
You
know
with
that.
You
can
certainly
monitor
where
the
bus
is
and
make
your
a
more
efficient
use
of
your
time
as
you're
waiting
for
the
bus
as
opposed
to
you
know,
thinking,
okay,
the
schedule
reads:
the
bus
is
going
to
be
here
at
timex
and
you
find
yourself
waiting
and
as
if
you're
like
me,
and
then
second
guessing
whether
you
missed
your
bus
ride
so
check
it
out.
A
Let's
see
some
other
things
that
are
worth
mentioning.
We
are
doing
some
speed
traffic
speed
assessments
in
the
city,
most
notably
on
second
avenue.
The
speed
tubes
have
been
put
down,
so
we're
going
to
be
monitoring
speeds
through
on
2nd
avenue.
We're
also
going
to
be
monitoring
speeds
on
cable
lane
to
see
what
that
looks
like
and
use
that
as
information
for
what
we
could
use
or
attempt
to
use
as
traffic
calming
devices
in
those
areas.
As
we
typically
do,
we
do
a
thorough
monitoring
of.
A
The
seventh
annual
athena
award
nominations
is
now
open
hard
to
believe
that
this
is
the
seventh
annual
award
already
something.
I
certainly
worked
hard
on
when
I
was
chairing
the
athens
commission
on
disabilities.
A
So
that's
out
there
we
are
hoping
that
people
will
nominate.
You
can
self-nominate.
You
can
nominate
an
individual.
You
can
nominate
an
organization,
you
can
nominate
a
business
that
you
feel
is
doing
activities
above
and
beyond
in
serving
those
with
disabilities.
Here
in
the
city
of
athens,
the
you
can
download
the
nomination
form
on
the
city's
website,
which,
as
usual,
is.
A
A
A
couple
of
updates
on
upcoming
meetings
here
in
the
city
of
athens,
most
notably,
is
that
city
council
will
be
meeting
and
it
will
be
here
in
council
chambers.
It
will
be
in
person,
council
meetings
moving
forward.
It
will
be
august,
2nd
at
7
00
p.m.
A
A
We've
got
a
lot
of
business
that
we
need
to
address
now
that
council
is
back
off
recess,
so
there
will
be
a
special
session
that
evening
as
well
to
where
there
will
be
committees
and
then
the
regular
session
athens
city,
sustainability,
commission.
They
are
going
to
be
meeting
august,
4th
that
is
6
to
7
p.m.
In
the
front
conference
room
and
we
have
a
planning
commission
which
will
be
august
5th,
and
that
will
be
up
here
in
council
chambers,
as
usual
noon
to
1
30
pm
and
the
joint
police
advisory
council.
They
too
are
meeting.
A
A
The
the
last
thing
I
want
to
mention,
which
is
really
kind
of
actually
a
couple
things
to
mention.
I
do
want
to
to
inform
the
viewing
audience
that
president
charles
ping,
charlie
ping,
passed
away.
He
was
the
18th
president
of
ohio
university.
A
I
never
was
faculty
under
the
ping
administration,
but
all
the
things
that
I
had
heard
where
charles
ping
was
so
engaged
in
our
community.
I
know
that
his
wife
was
one
of
the
founding
members
of
of
the
athens
county
foundation
when
it
was
developed
and
came
to
be
so
sad
to
hear
that
charles
peng
has
passed.
A
That
is
all
I
have
for
today.
Thank
you,
kyle
for
joining
me
as
usual.
Kyle
remind
me,
is
it?
Has
it
been
two
years
that
you
have
been
joining
me
or
longer.
A
Two
years
next
month,
so
next
month
is
kyle
kyle's
two
year
anniversary
of
joining
me.
I
always
appreciate
you
having
me
here:
updating
on
us
on
weather,
covered
19
and
all
things
bobcat
sports,
so
thank
you.
Kyle
you're
welcome,
thanks
for
joining
in,
and
please
join
me
next
week
for
the
next
installment
of
press
conference
with
the
mayor.
