Description
Arbor Day Celebration 2022
A
Hi
there
I'm
Catherine
Ann
Jordan,
the
director
of
Arts
Parks
and
Recreation
for
the
city
of
Athens,
and
we
are
here
at
the
East
State
Park
campus
in
the
city
of
Athens.
We
have
been
planting
trees
and
are
going
to
continue
planting
trees
over
the
next
couple
of
weeks.
So
where
we
are
right
now
are
at
the
site
of
our
new
dog
parks
at
the
East
State
Park
Campus,
and
we
have
planted
20
trees
in
the
dog
parks.
A
We
will
finish
planting
one
of
those
trees
as
a
part
of
our
Arbor
Day
celebration,
but
then
across
the
path.
The
bike
path
behind
in
front
of
me
and
along
the
Hocking
river
is
our
riparian
area,
where
we
have
been
restoring
that
getting
rid
of
invasive
plants
and
trying
to
restore
back
to
its
Nate
some
native
plants.
In
that
area.
A
We
will
have
25
trees
planted
in
that
area
in
two
weeks,
so
we're
very
excited
to
have
almost
50
trees
planted
just
in
the
month
of
November
plantings
and
some
city
bus
stops
Alum
throughout
the
city
of
Athens,
and
that
has
been
a
really
great
collaboration
with
the
shade
tree.
Commission
and
the
riparian
planting
will
be
with
the
University
of
the
shade
tree
commission
as
well.
Yeah.
B
And
we've
got
a
group
here,
that's
with
us,
so
the
shade
tree
commission
is
well
represented,
as
well
as
the
city
and
I
want
to
kind
of
add
to
something
that
Catherine
Ann
had
mentioned
about
the
tree
planting
we
just
recently
at
least
this
past
summer
anyway
received
our
report
card
or
report
about
our
environmental
Equity
here
in
the
city
of
Athens,
and
one
of
the
things
that
was
really
interesting
about
that
report
is
that
we
rank
rather
High
when
it
comes
to
our
carbon
sequestration
because
of
our
tree
canopy.
B
B
Another
significant
portion
of
that
report
is
how
we
stand
when
it
comes
to
our
per
capita
carbon
emissions,
carbon
emissions
bad,
but
when
you
are
ranked
highest
in
the
state
of
Ohio
and
actually
we're
one
of
the
leaders
in
the
nation,
you
look
at
the
state's
average
and
it's
22
metric
tons
per
per
capita
versus
the
U.S,
which
is
19.
The
city
of
Athens
is
just
North
of
five
percent
or
five
tons
rather
metric
tons.
B
So
we
do
really
well
in
that
realm
as
well
and
a
lot
of
us
because
we're
an
extremely
walkable
Community
and
a
very
Progressive
Community
when
it
comes
to
being
environmentally
friendly.
Council,
you
know,
has
done
great
things
in
the
past
and
continues
to
do
great
things
when
it
comes
to
making
sure
that
we
are
a
an
environmentally
and
sustainable
Community.
A
B
Know
with
things
like
our
recycling,
our
composting
programs,
but
also
our
electrification
plans.
We
look
forward
to
seeing
more
and
more
electric
vehicles
in
our
community
we're
on
a
mission
to
change
over
our
Fleet
to
more
EV
vehicles
within
the
city's
Fleet.
So
all
that
said,
it's
wonderful
being
here
to
you,
know,
kick
off
our
Arbor
Day
celebration.
I've
got
a
proclamation.
A
C
A
crab
apple
tree
here
we're
in
what
was
the
Bicentennial
Park,
which
was
established
in
1976.
There
was
a
star
that
outlined
the
park
with
trees,
but
over
time
those
trees
have
died,
and
this
is
really
re-establishing
trees
that
were
here
at
one
time
that
had
to
be
removed
because
of
disease
and
age.
So
it's
really
nice
to
see
this
park
revitalized
and
being
used
by
lots
of
people,
including
establishment
of
new
dog
parks
over
here.
So.
D
I'm
Chris
full
and
I'm,
the
chairperson
of
the
shade
tree
commission
I,
started
in
about
February,
so
we've
been
really
busy.
This
year
we
have
new
committees,
and
one
of
the
busiest
has
been
the
tree
planting
committee.
We're
really
excited
to
be
doing
all
our
partnering
with
the
people
who've
been
doing
all
the
tree
planting.
D
This
fall
with,
like
the
Athens
Arbor
Day
committee
committee,
which
we're
doing
a
partnership
with
the
parks
and
rec
people
that
we're
doing
partnership
with
and
OU
and
so
between
the
restoration
of
floodplain
and
this
sort
of
a
continuation,
our
Parks.
It's
really
exciting,
because
this
is
a
we've
been
operating
first
tree
Commission
in
Athens
was
in
1929,
which
is
one
of
the
oldest
tree
Commissions
in
all
of
Ohio,
and
we'll
go
for
another
100
years.
