celebrate
bicycling
and
bicycling
culture
in
Athens,
I'm,
Paul

I'm,
the
planner
for
the
city
of
Athens,
I'm
honored,
to
introduce
to
you
our
state
representative,
Debbie
Phillips
from
Albany
prior
to
being
our
state
representative
that
he
was
also
a
representative
of
Athens,
City,
Council
and
I
was
a
strong
advocate
for
planning
and
transportation
issues
in
our
community.
So
please
welcome.

It's
great
to
see
everybody
here.
This
is
a
very
exciting
day
for
the
Athens
community,
an
opportunity
to
celebrate
the
way,
so
many
people
work
together
to
get
things
done
here.
It
really
is
an
example
of
a
great
partnership,
the
way
the
city
and
university
and
the
citizens
all
work
together
to
help
continue
strengthening
our
community
and
making
this
just
a
wonderful
place
to
live.
I
used
to
live
about
a
block
away
from
the
bike
path,
and
it
was
just
such
a
treasure.

We
even
had
some
folks
who
approached
me
when
I
was
on
City
Council,
who
enjoyed
the
bike
path
and
the
idea
of
being
able
to
walk
or
bike
to
the
Senior
Center
from
this
Near
East,
Side,
neighborhood,
but
needed
places
to
sit
and
rest,
and
they
were
able
to
work
with
the
bike
path
committee
and
some
local
business
to
help
get
ventures
put
in
so
I
love
the
way.
This
community
solve
problems
together
to
keep
stronger.

me
a

and
a
half

This
is
for
the
opening
of
the
bike
path.
We
at
the

and

and
I'm,
going

all

I'd

it

We've
got
everybody
from
City
Council
representative
coffin,
you
studying
from
the
Athens
of
Health
Department
SAMCRO
from
Ohio
University
Office
of
Sustainability
and
I'm,
not
even
going
to
go
into
all
the
rest,
because
it's
all
us
as
a
community
in
terms
of
for
the
program
and
designation
polo,
did
a
major
job
on
that.
If
you
look
around
basically
there's
only
there's
about
three
hundred
and
fifty
seven
cities
and
bicycle
friendly
communities
in
the
50
states,
there
are
only
12
in
a
state
of
Ohio,
so
we're
above
the
rest.

I
know
that
when
they
came
there
suitably
impressed
with
the
book
a
bike.
That's
a
quite
unusual
feet.
There,
it's
all
what
makes
us
great
community
and
pass
we've
been
adding
bike
lanes,
adding
spurs
bike
Spurs.
We
still
have
a
lot
more
to
go.
The
idea
of
courses
make
this
multi
mobile
as
possible.
We
do
it
for
recreation
which
most
people
think
about.

We
do
it
for
transportation,
which
is
very
important
and
for
health
and
again
this
is
a
lot
of
stuff
most
of
stuff
we've
been
doing
at
this
point
and
I'm
going
to
switch
the
other
page

of
some
of
the
things
we've
done,
of
course
is
bike
lanes.
On
the
run
on
the
roundabout
on
mill
street
we've
been
adding
it
pretty
much
every
construction
project
we
look
at
and
vet.
It
was
our
engineer
saying:
can
we
put
a
bike
lane
in?
Is
it
possible?
Is
it
doable
and
it's
safe?

mayor
I
certainly
want
to
begin
my
remarks
on
this
very,
very
wonderful
occasion
by
thanking
our
state
representative,
Debbie
Philip,
our
state
senator
the
Gentile
members
of
the
City
Council,
certainly
mayor
while
and
Paul
Logue,
and
everyone
that
had
a
lot
to
do
with
this
day.
This
is
really
really
an
important
day
for
Ohio
University
and
certainly
for
the
city
of
Athens.
The
mayor
commented
to
me
at
the
outset
that
the
last
time
we
were
together
and
an
occasion
like
this,
we
were
opening
kind
of
a
new
part
of
the
street
path.

It
was
about
19
degrees
and
I.
Think
it's
just
the
opposite
of
that
91.
So
we
kind
of
go
from
19
to
91,
but
we
certainly
want
to
thank
everyone,
especially
those
who
bike
I
bike
as
well
and
I
certainly
am
looking
forward
to
the
opportunity
to
use
this
new
bike
path.
That's
you're
actually,
no
coincidence
that
we're
gathered
at
the
hawk
Hawking
edina
bike
way
for
today's
celebration.

The
path
not
only
connects
places
in
Athens,
but
it
connects
people
as
we
commute
to
work
or
to
school
as
we
exercise
as
we
take
to
the
scenic
hills
and
beauty
of
this
place.
We
all
call
home
being
caretakers
of
the
hot
Hawking
Adina
bike
weight
is
responsibilities
that
Ohio
University
takes
very
seriously.
Our
community
members
have
been
integral
in
offering
feedback
and
support
for
the
university's
effort
to
repair
this
section
of
the
bike
way
it
costs
about
300,000
dollars,
but
those
were
three
hundred
thousand
dollars.

We
gladly
spent,
because
this
bike
way
really
is
an
important
road
in
Athens.
We
are
especially
grateful
to
the
faculty
staff,
students
and
community
members
who
have
work
to
identify
priority
needs
and
funding,
to
perform
vital
engineering
studies
to
coordinate
repairs
with
events
and
weather
conditions,
and
to
carefully
ensure
that
this
highly
utilized
section
of
the
path
reflect
the
institution's
commitment
to
safe
and
sustainable
transportation.

By
encouraging
increased
use
of
the
bike
path,
we
are
able
to
discourage
in
city
and
on
campus,
be
transportation
which
we
want
to
do
more
of.
Ultimately,
this
will
allow
us
to
reduce
the
institutional
greenhouse
gas
emissions
and
honor
our
climate
action
and
sustainability
plans
at
Ohio
University.
Cutting
this
ribbon
is
assembled
of
ohio,
university's,
renewed
commitment
to
safe,
healthy
and
active
transportation.
We
look
forward
to
continuing
our
work
of
the
city
and
county
to
enhance
sustainable
transportation
offerings
and
athletes,
as
the
ribbon
is
cut
and
moved
from
this
path.

invite
all
the
hop
on
your
bikes
and
ride
toward
the
Atlas
community
center,
where
a
reception
at
the
east
state
street
shelter
is
waiting
for
you.
Let
me
in
with
a
personal
comment.
You
know
one
of
the
things
that
people
don't
see
as
much
as
we'd
like
it's,
this
kind
of
cooperation
between
Ohio
University
and
the
city
I
want
you
to
know
that
this
happens
a
lot.
The
mayor
and
I
have
been
meeting
monthly
for
as
long
as
I
can
remember.

We
will
continue
to
do
that
well
into
the
future,
and
what
we
try
to
talk
about
is
how
can
we
make
our
community
better
for
both
the
citizens
of
the
community
and
those
of
us
who
work
at
Ohio
University?
So
today
is
simply
another
point
along
the
way
of
the
progress
that
we're
making
toward
making
Ohio
University
a
better
place
in
the
city
of
Athens
a
better
place.
I
could
not
be
prouder
of
the
collaboration
of
cooperation,
we've
been
able
to
enjoy
and
our
work
together
over
these
years.

mayor
I,
especially
want
to
thank
you
for
reaching
out
consistently
to
the
University
and
making
these
kinds
of
days
happen.
So,
let's
enjoy
this
day,
let's
cut
this
ribbon.
Let's
hop
on
these
bikes
and
let's
move
forward,
but
first
we're
going
to
unveil
this.
This
sign
the
