Description
What’s buzzin’ around Bloomington? The pavement management program is underway and in full swing. The City Council recognized the 25th anniversary of ADA at its meeting. Plus, a new sign near Bush Lake Beach may help save turtles.
A
B
Welcome
to
Bloomington
today,
I'm
Laurie
Schulte
thanks
for
joining
us.
First,
we
bring
you
the
buzz
for
the
week
of
July
fifteenth
through
the
21st
in
an
effort
to
keep
city
roads
in
good
condition.
Crews
have
been
hard
at
work
carrying
out
the
pavement
management
program.
The
city
is
responsible
for
360
center
lane
miles
of
streets,
and
every
summer
this
systematic
program
ensures
roads,
get
rehabilitated
and
repaired.
Jobs
within
this
program
include
overlays
and
reconstructions.
Here's
some
video
of
an
overlay
on
Morris
Road
in
West,
eighty-eighth
Street.
B
An
overlay
involves
grinding
off
the
top
layer
of
road
and
laying
down
new
pavement.
This
next
video
shows
a
reconstruction
project
taking
place
at
park
avenue
between
90th
and
88
Street.
For
this,
all
asphalt
is
removed
and
replaced.
An
outside
contractor
carries
out
both
the
overlay
and
reconstruction
projects
throughout
the
city.
A
few
rain
days
have
slowed
down
progress
slightly,
but
all
projects
are
still
on
schedule.
The
reconstruction
projects
are
set
to
finish
up
by
November
overlay
projects
will
be
complete
by
September.
B
In
the
meantime,
drivers
should
slow
down
in
construction
zones
and
pay
attention
to
any
signage
for
a
full
list
of
pavement
management
projects
taking
place
is
at
the
city's
website
and
search
PMP.
Over
the
last
few
weeks,
we've
been
highlighting
individuals
who
played
an
instrumental
role
in
making
Bloomington
accessible
for
people
of
all
abilities.
Now
the
City
Council
is
also
putting
those
efforts
in
the
spotlight.
During
its
July
sixth
meeting,
the
council
re
committed
to
the
full
implementation
of
the
Americans
with
Disabilities
Act,
with
a
proclamation
Bloomington
resident
John
shots
line
accepted
it.
B
B
C
Haven't
increased
the
slots
of
disabled
parking
in
parking
lots
since
the
original
passing
of
the
NEA
to
this
day,
it's
very
difficult
finding
a
cab
company
that
has
an
adequate
amount
of
vans
with
lips
to
be
able
to
take
people
in
wheelchairs.
We
still
have
a
long
ways
to
go
and
it's
a
constant
battle.

Human
Rights
Commission
will
celebrate
the
25th
anniversary
of
a
DA
on
Thursday
july,
twenty
third
at
Civic
Plaza.
It
starts
at
6pm.
A
special
video
by
TPT
will
be
shown.
A
program
involving
local
disabilities
activists
will
follow.
The
blood
drive
at
City
Hall
had
a
good
turnout.
Thirty
six
pints
of
blood
were
collected
that
could
save
108
lives.
41
registered
owners
showed
up
to
the
red
cross
blood
drive.
If
you
didn't
have
a
chance
to
make
it
out,
there
will
be
more
blood
drives
at
Civic
Plaza
coming
up.
B
The
next
one
is
on
August
nineteenth
to
register
visit
red
cross
blood,
org,
slash,
donating

blood

a

Co
be
music
food
and
fireworks
summer,
fete
2015
went
off
with
a
bang
about
10,000
people
gathered
for
the
third
of
July
festivities.
There
was
a
carnival
to
entertainment,
sages
and,
of
course,
fireworks.
The
Bloomington
medalist
ban
was
the
final
act
before
fireworks
filled
the
sky.
B
It's
one
of
the
few
displays
using
tenant
shells
making
it
one
of
the
best
fireworks
show
in
the
state,
parks
and
recreation
workers
estimate
between
thirty
and
forty
thousand
people
were
in
the
park
area.
For
the
firework
show
summer,
fete
is
the
biggest
city
sponsored
event
and
takes
place
every
year
at
Normandale,
Lake
Park,
the
city
also
hosts
winter
fat
in
those
colder
months.
So,
if
you
missed
this
celebration,
or
only
about
six
months
away
from
the
winter
festivities,
several
groups
in
Bloomington,
Edina
and
richfield
are
working
to
get
more
people
walking
and
biking.
B
The
promotion
is
supported
by
the
statewide
health
improvement
program
through
tri-city
partners
for
healthy
communities.
Each
city
is
actively
working
on
long-term
measures
to
promote
biking
and
walking,
for
example,
by
crowds
have
been
added
at
mini
Bloomington
summer
events,
there's
also
several
bike
to
the
market.
Events
where
community
members
are
encouraged
to
ditch
their
car
to
get
to
the
Bloomington
farmers
market.
There's
one
on
July
eighteenth
in
August,
fifteenth
for
a
list
of
all
the
biking
and
walking
events
in
the
area
visit
the
city's
website
and
search
biking.
B
Drivers
should
always
be
mindful
of
pedestrians
crossing
the
road,
but
it's
not
only
humans.
You
should
be
keeping
an
eye
out
for
turtles
are
also
crossing
busy
streets
this
time
of
year,
a
popular
place,
bush
lake
road
by
the
beach
in
an
effort
to
alert
motorists
to
their
migration.
A
new
turtle
crossing
sign
was
installed
by
Parks
and
Recreation
turtles
often
migrate
from
the
lake
to
the
pond
across
the
road,
but
they
don't
always
get
there
safely.
City
workers
hope
this
sign
will
remind
drivers
in
the
area
to
take
caution.
B
There's
a
few
other
things
you
can
do
to
prevent
turtle
mortality.
Don't
make
sudden
movements
check
the
area
around
your
car
before
leaving
your
parking
space
and
always
move
turtles
in
the
same
direction.
They
were
traveling
to
prevent
confusion.
That
is
the
buzz
on
Bloomington
today
for
the
week
of
July
fifteenth
through
the
21st.
If
you
would
like
to
watch
other
stories
from
the
show
go
to
this
week's
playlist,
there
you'll
find
the
story
on
a
city
building
that
was
recognized
for
its
design.
