Description
What’s buzzin’ in Bloomington? The City celebrates veterans with a special breakfast event. A county courthouse may be coming to Civic Plaza. Plus, the winter clothing drive was a big success!
A
Welcome
to
bloomington
today,
I'm
Lori
Schulte
thanks
for
joining
us.
First,
we
bring
you
the
buzz
for
the
week
of
November
eighteenth
through
the
24th,
with
veterans
day
this
month
the
city
has
been
hosting
several
events
to
honor
our
servicemen
and
women.
This
photo
wall
behind
me
is
one
way
that
we're
honoring
their
sacrifice,
and
there
was
also
a
breakfast.
There
was
a
large
showing
at
the
Human
Services
event.
Veterans
from
different
branches
and
wars
were
all
there.
A
The
keynote
speaker
was
Betis
trophies
she's
a
ninety
six
year
old
firecracker,
who
was
a
member
of
the
woman
Airforce
Service
Pilots
during
World
War
two.
She
shared
some
pretty
amazing
stories
and
got
a
lot
of
laughs.
This
story
you're
about
to
hear
it
explains
how
a
cadet,
who
received
training
from
Betty,
reacted
to
being
trained
by
a
woman.
He.
B
Said
I'm
not
going
to
get
in
that
play
that
you're
going
to
be
a
pilot.
I
said
well,
I'll
tell
you
what
you
get
in
the
airplane
and
I'll.
Take
you
up
for
a
little
ride
so
I'll
see
if
I
can
fly
airplanes,
so
I
took
them
up
on.
I
tell
you.
I
put
them
through
the
rules,
but
I
had
to
let
him
know
that
I
could
handle
airplane.
B
A
Want
to
hear
more
from
Betty,
you
can
catch
her
entire
talk
in
one
of
our
long-form
segments
airing
in
the
coming
weeks
on
this
channel
City
Hall
wasn't
the
only
place
honoring
veterans
this
month
over
at
Northwestern
Health
Sciences
University,
a
new
veteran
center
opened
a
ribbon-cutting
ceremony
marked
the
new
addition.
The
new
veterans
support
center
will
serve
the
needs
of
students
who
have
served
in
the
military
by
giving
them
a
place
to
hang
out
and
study
with
other
veterans.
There
will
also
be
resources
available
to
help
veterans,
navigate
benefits
or
other
veteran
related
issues.
A
The
idea
was
dreamed
up
by
the
students
serving
veterans
club
on
campus
and
was
made
possible
by
a
grant
from
the
home
depot
foundation.
While
there's
now
new
space
for
veterans
at
Northwestern,
a
new
building
may
be
coming
to
civic
plaza.
The
city
and
hennepin
county
are
working
to
bring
a
district
courthouse
to
city
hall,
they'll
be
right
over
there.
If
it
all
goes
through,
it
may
be
built
attached
to
the
police
department
where
the
garage
entrances
are
currently,
the
design
is
general
and
subject
to
change.
A
The
City
Council
agreed
to
a
letter
of
intent
with
Hennepin
County
to
relocate
fourth
district
court
facilities
to
civic
plaza.
The
Corps
is
currently
at
the
County
southdale
regional
center,
but
that
site
is
being
redeveloped.
Next
steps
include
formalizing
a
development
and
lease
agreement.
The
new
building
will
likely
include
a
28,000
square
foot
addition.
It
will
have
its
own
entrance
and
clear
signage
to
prevent
confusion.
This
change
will
improve
access
to
justice
for
local
residents
and
will
host
appearances
for
adult
non
felony
cases,
including
traffic
offenses.
A
Felony
offenses
will
continue
to
be
heard
at
the
downtown
courthouse.
The
target
completion
date
is
set
for
2017.
While
this
may
be
a
big
change
for
City
Hall,
the
Mall
of
America
may
be
seeing
some
changes
to
while
phase
1
C,
which
includes
the
JW
Marriott,
is
wrapping
up
construction.
The
mall
already
has
plans
for
development
across
the
street.
Mall
of
america
submitted
an
application
for
phase
2.
With
a
planned
opening
day
of
fall
2018
it
will
include
35,000
square
feet
of
upscale
retail
space,
a
four-star
hotel
office
space
and
residential
housing.
C
Malm
America
from
a
tax
perspective,
it's
about
depending
on
how
you
measure
at
about
ten
percent
of
bloomington's
tax
base
or
tax
capacity,
and
so
to
the
extent
the
mall
does
well,
it
helps
moderate
taxes
in
the
rest
of
the
city
and
having
a
big
mall
in
the
city
is.
Is
it
has
been
a
good
investment
and
will
be
a
good
investment
in
the
long
run
for
the
city.
A
A
To
keep
warm
that's
why
the
city
teamed
up
with
Bloomington
public
schools
to
collect
winter
clothes
for
students,
district-wide
12
community
organizations
help
collect
the
items
more
than
1,000
items
were
gathered
for
needy
kids,
including
385,
hats,
170
coats
and
fifty
four
pairs
of
boots
items
were
immediately
given
to
eight
schools,
and
the
remaining
items
are
available
to
all
15
schools
on
an
as-needed
basis.
That
is
the
buzz
on
Bloomington
today
for
the
week
of
November
eighteenth
through
the
24th.
