Description
What’s buzzin’ in Bloomington? The development at Penn and American is nearing the end of construction. The City adopted new tobacco and nutrition policies. Plus, VEAP needs your help to make up for a low egg supply.
A
B
Welcome
to
Bloomington
today,
I'm
Laurie
Schulte
thanks
for
joining
us.
First,
we
bring
you
the
buzz
for
the
week
of
July
eighth
through
the
14th
phase.
Two
of
the
pen
American
project
is
really
starting
to
take
shape
and
will
open
in
just
a
couple
months.
The
development
will
include
a
red
robin
restaurant,
home2,
suites,
hotel
and
fresh
thyme
grocery
store.
There
will
also
be
retail
space,
which
will
include
an
AT&T
store
right
now.
Construction
is
entering
its
final
stages.
B
Crews
are
installing
windows
in
the
hotel
and
multi-tenant
space
interior
framing
is
taking
place
in
the
hotel
and
red
robin
and
the
grocery
store
is
being
painted
and
refrigerators
are
being
installed.
Brickwork
throughout
the
new
development
is
also
ongoing.
The
project
includes
both
above
and
underground
parking,
and
that
is
nearly
finished.
The
pen
American
redevelopment
project
is
set
to
open
in
late
August.
The
city
has
new
tobacco
and
nutrition
policies
and
you'll
see
some
healthy
changes.
The
next
time
you
visit
city
hall,
while
city
buildings
were
already
smoke-free.
B
Smoking
is
now
prohibited
on
the
entire
grounds
that
includes
sidewalks
grass
areas
and
parking
lots
at
city
properties.
You
can,
however,
smoke
inside
your
personal
vehicle.
The
other
change
will
be
seen
at
the
vending
machines.
Forty
percent
of
all
city
bought
food
will
be
a
healthy
option,
for
example,
that
means
fruit,
whole
grains
or
low-fat
dairy
products,
public
health
administrator
body
Paulson
says
this
shift
will
make
the
healthier
choice.
The
easier
choice
when
visiting
city
buildings.
C
It
just
is
going
to
make
your
choice
to
stay
healthy,
easier,
you're,
not
going
to
be
exposed
to
any
type
of
secondhand
smoke
or
tobacco
products.
You
are
going
to
be
able
to
make
a
healthy
choice
for
food
if
your
hair,
when
you're
needing
to
grab
something
to
eat
that
you
know
the
only
choice
that
you
have
isn't
soda
and
candy
bars,
healthier.
B
Food
choices
we're
already
being
offered
at
some
city
facilities
like
the
Aquatic,
Center
and
ice
garden,
but
now
you
see
those
healthy
items
citywide
it's
tobacco
and
nutrition
policies
like
this
that
are
helping
curb
a
rising
obesity
rate.
After
the
statewide
health
improvement
program
was
implemented
in
2008
minnesota's
obesity
rate
stopped
climbing
the
obesity
rate
and
surrounding
states
continued
to
rise,
starting.
C
B
Avian
flu
virus
is
not
only
affecting
farmers
across
Minnesota,
consumers
are
dealing
with
price
hikes,
and
local
food
shelves
are
faced
with
low
supply.
Since
early
june,
Minnesota's
largest
food
shelf
veep
has
had
no
eggs
to
offer
clients.
The
cost
of
eggs
has
doubled
since
the
avian
flu
outbreak,
so
organizers
are
scrambling
to
gather
other
protein
sources
to
put
on
the
shelves.
It's
a
difficult
task,
since
eggs
are
a
high
quality
inexpensive
protein
to
battle.
The
problem,
veep
is
looking
to
secure
donations
to
buy
canned
tuna
and
chicken
beans
and
other
alternatives.
B
If
you
would
like
to
make
a
donation
to
beep
visit
their
website
at
the
volunteers
org
over
the
past
few
weeks,
we've
been
telling
the
stories
of
local
disabilities
activists
in
preparation
for
the
25th
anniversary
of
the
Americans,
with
Disabilities
Act
Bob
Peters
was
one
person
highlighted,
and
he
recently
passed
away.
My.
D
B
Was
Bob
earlier
this
summer
he
was
injured
more
than
50
years
ago
after
a
shallow
water
diving
accident.
Since
then,
he
fought
for
equal
rights
for
people
of
all
abilities.
One
of
his
accomplishments
was
creating
the
first
comprehensive
statewide
disability
parking
legislation
in
the
country.
He's
also
received
several
awards,
including
the
2012
amar
bondhu
route
award.
But
25
years
later,
after
the
Americans
with
Disabilities
Act
Bob
said
there
was
more
work
to
be
done.
D
B
Passed
away
on
jun
25th,
his
life
was
celebrated
on
june
thirtieth.
That
is
the
buzz
on
bloomington
today
for
the
week
of
july,
eighth
through
the
14th.
If
you
would
like
to
watch
other
stories
from
the
show
go
to
this
week's
playlist,
there
you'll
find
a
story
on
the
Donaldson
company.
They
just
celebrated
100
years
of
business,
there's
also
a
piece
explaining
why
bees
are
the
newest
guests
at
the

thanks
