Today's
candidates
for
the
Bloomington
school
board
will
be
speaking
to
you
about
their
background
and
the
priorities
for
Bloomington
schools
and
how
they
plan
to
work
to
address
their
priorities.
Should
they
be
elected.
B
B
Hello,
my
name
is
Maureen
Bartolotta
and
before
I
begin,
I
would
like
to
thank
the
League
of
Women
Voters
for
hosting
this
opportunity
for
the
school
board.
Candidates
I've
been
serving
the
Bloomington
Public
Schools
for
the
past
16
years,
my
husband,
Ralph
and
I
have
lived
in
Bloomington
for
29
years,
both
of
our
children
graduated
from
Bloomington
schools.
My
son
Joseph
is
a
professor
at
the
University
at
Hofstra
University
in
New
York,
and
my
daughter.
Katie
is
currently
an
attorney
at
a
law
firm
in
downtown
Minneapolis.
B
Both
benefit
fitted
from
a
excellent
Bloomington,
Schools
education
and
I
want
every
child
to
achieve
their
dreams.
My
daughter
and
her
husband
also
have
a
13
month
old
son
and
we
envision
a
bright
future
for
him
as
a
future.
Bloomington
school
alum,
my
family
and
I
have
a
long
history
with
Bloomington
and
the
schools,
and
we
consider
the
education
our
children
received
as
a
point
of
civic
pride.
B
One
of
the
reasons
I'm
running
for
re-election
is
to
continue
to
keep
a
commitment
to
the
community
to
deliver
high
quality
public
education,
while
on
the
school
board,
I've
served
as
clerk
vice-chair
and
board
chair
I
also
serve
on
the
board
of
directors
of
the
Education
Foundation
of
Bloomington,
which
supports
the
district
students
with
stipends
for
items
they
cannot
afford.
Our
Food
for
Thought
Program
has
made
sure
that
I'll,
although
their
family
may
be
struggling,
they
will
still
receive
a
healthy
lunch.
B
I've
also
been
associated
with
another
community
group,
Bloomington
United
for
youth
on
and
off
for
the
past
20
years,
I
also
volunteer
at
many
community
events
like
Heritage
Days
and
at
events
at
my
church.
Prior
to
my
service
on
the
board,
I
was
an
active
volunteer
in
supporter
of
Lymington
schools.
I
served
as
PTSA
president
at
the
school
as
my
children
attended
and
as
president
of
the
Bloomington
PTSA
Council,
where
all
15
school
representatives
gather
monthly
to
discuss
challenges
and
accomplishments
at
their
schools
with
other
school
reps.
B
We
also
piloted
it
and
later
adopted
a
program
to
Lentz
Chromebooks
to
the
students
to
even
out
the
playing
field
with
technological
access.
We
are
currently
in
the
midst
of
updating
our
school
buildings
to
provide
more
access
to
provide
more
effective
space
for
learning.
During
my
time
on
the
board,
we
have
faced
many
challenges,
but
I
think
the
decisions
we
have
made
have
made
a
positive
difference
for
the
students
of
Bloomington.
As
most
of
people
know,
the
district
is
still
facing
great
challenges.
B
We
have
a
steady
student
population,
but
our
special
ad
in
English
language
learners,
are
increasing.
The
most
recent
state
budget
increases
the
funding
formula.
However,
statutory
requirements
and
inflationary
factors
outstrip
the
revenue.
This
places
additional
burdens
on
our
finances.
This
year
we
will
be
looking
at
budget
cuts
and
the
decisions
that
need
to
be
made
will
require
knowledge
of
past
deliberations
and
the
board
goals,
while
taking
into
account
the
needs
of
all
our
stakeholders,
the
students,
the
teachers,
the
parents
and
the
larger
community.
But
it's
not
all
bad
news.
B
I'm
excited
about
some
of
the
new
initiatives
here
in
Bloomington,
for
example,
the
Bloomington
career
in
college
Academy
is
helping
many
of
our
students
to
choose
a
path
other
than
college,
which
will
lead
to
more
many
lucrative
careers
careers
in
law
enforcement,
nursing,
emergency
technicians,
cosmetology,
construction
and
technology
are
being
introduced
to
our
students,
while
they
are
still
in
high
school.
Also,
this
year
we
have
started
a
computer
science
immersion
program
at
two
of
our
elementary
schools.
Moreover,
we
continue
to
offer
more
online
courses
and
our
high
schools
to
accommodate
our
learners.
B
We
are
also
working
hard
to
recruit
teachers
and
staff
that
reflect
the
communities.
Our
students
and
parents
come
from.
I
hope
that,
with
my
experience,
my
willingness
to
mentor
new
board
members
and
my
institutional
knowledge
I
can
help
us
achieve
our
goals
over
the
next
four
years.
I
hope
I
can
count
on
your
vote
and
that
you
share
the
same
vision
for
growth
and
excellence
in
our
schools.
That
I
do.

and
initiatives.

Pairen
and

on
the
board
teacher
and

and
economic
stability
for
our
school
district.
I
have
served
on
various
sport
committees,
including
the
board's
legislative
committee,
which
I
have
chaired
for
the
past
years.
I
am
also
the
board

to
the
Association
of
metropolitan
school
districts,
where
I
served
as
a
member
of
its
legislative
committee
for
three
years.
Besides,
my
work
in
education
I
serve
in
the
city
as
a
member
of
the
forward.
2040
comprehensive
plan
and
I
am
also
a
planning
Commissioner.
C
The
world
is
constantly
changing
and
so
is
education,
and
it
is
important
that
our
students
are
prepared
for
those
changes
and
for
the
challenges
of
the
21st
century.
I
continue
to
be
deeply
passionate
about
education.
I
am
a
product
of
public
education
and
I
believe
in
the
positive
impact
that
it
has
in
our
society.
C
I
believe
that
strong
school
systems
are
fundamental
in
the
preservation
and
development
of
prosperous,
successful
and
healthy
Unity's
Bloomington
is
a
great
community
with
a
strong
school
district
with
teachers
and
staff
members
who
are
always
committed
to
provide
high
quality
education
to
all
our
students.
I
am
seeking
re-election
to
continue
my
work
in
service
in
Bloomington,
advocating
for
our
students,
their
families
and
our
schools.
C
I
am
committed
to
put
our
students
first
support,
high
quality,
academic
programs
and
initiatives,
best
academic
practices
for
closing
the
achievement
and
the
opportunity
gap,
college
and
career
readiness
in
advanced
programs,
meaningful
community
and
family
engagement,
early
learning
and
special
education
and
student
support
services.
I
am
also
committed
to
continue
working
in
collaboration
with
the
city
of
Bloomington
to
address
all
the
different
issues
that
might
impact
the
education
and
the
well-being
of
our
students.
I
will
continue
to
be
fiscally
responsible
and
I
will
always
work
hard
to
support
our
schools
and
the
Bloomington
community.
D
D
Hello,
my
name
is
John
moravec
and
I'm.
Asking
for
your
support.
Moving
to
Bloomington
is
one
the
best
decisions
of
my
life.
I
love
our
city.
It's
part
open
part,
natural
good
food,
sometimes
frustrating
to
get
around,
and
we
have
an
occasional
coyote
sighting
I,
especially
love
our
neighbors
and
our
ability
to
come
together,
I'm
running
for
school
board
to
help
bring
a
voice
for
all
committee
members.
In
the
district.
We
need
leaders
in
our
schools
to
listen
more
present
and
honor
the
work,
effort
and
skills.
It
takes
be
an
effective
educator.
D
Our
teachers
and
staff
deserve
to
be
treated
with
dignity
and
as
the
professionals
they
are
with
responsibilities.
I
am
running
the
fight
for
equable
education,
for
all
students
and
to
better
support
the
working
families
in
our
district
I
have
a
background
in
business
and
at
a
PhD
in
educational
policy
and
administration.
My
academic
and
professional
lives
have
been
centered
around
planning
for
the
future
across
cultures
as
a
small
business
owner
I
work
with
major
governments
and
organizations
around
the
world
to
help
us
prepare
for
a
changing
world.
D
I
visited
schools,
universities
in
over
30
countries
and
my
volunteer
work
is
focused
on
raising
voices
for
those
who
are
ignored
or
not
listened
to
I've
seen
what
works
and
have
ideas
for
how
we
can
improve
I
hope
to
bring
my
deep
expertise
into
our
school
leadership.
Show
leadership
contribute
to
the
conversation
and
find
solutions
when
it
best
help
students
start
community
members
achieve
their
best
education
futures.
It's
time
to
come
together.
Bloomington's
competitive
advantage
rests
within
our
teachers
and
staff.
D
The
district
should
be
the
place
to
go
for
top
educators
and
need
to
keep
that
position
within
our
region.
The
hidden
crisis
is
that
we've
lost
some
great
educators
in
neighboring
districts
and
we
need
to
keep
them
here.
Let's
building
quality
well
carefully,
built
using
our
limited
resources
and
let's
listen
and
reflect,
and
what
our
educators
have
to
say
and
bring
to
the
schools.
D
Listening
and
responsiveness
are
important
to
me.
I'll
work
to
ensure
the
district
has
the
best
relations
with
its
employees
and
working
families
as
possible
through
policy
and
legislative
advocacy.
We
need
to
ask
ourselves:
what
can
we
do
to
make
our
community
better?
Not
what
can
you
do
to
make
our
community
cheaper?
We
should
be
better
and
we
can
do
better.
I
will
focus
on
developing
and
retaining
the
best
educators
supporting
families,
ensuring
support
for
the
best
programs.
I've
been
actively
talking
and
meeting
with
a
lot
of
people.
D
Our
community
and
folks
are
dissatisfied
the
status
quo,
which
has
not
been
responsive.
This
divides
us.
Our
school
board
needs
to
take
a
leadership
stance.
Ask
tough
questions,
listen
and
step
forward
to
advocate
policies
that
promote
strong
education
for
our
children,
supporter
teachers
and
staff,
improve
morale.
We
need
to
have
a
school
board
that
holds
our
administration
accountable
and
sets
good
policies.
This
is
how
a
government
body
or
any
business
should
be
run.
We
need
positive
action
and
accountable
leadership
and
I
want
to
be
a
part
of
that.
D
I
will
speak
out
to
ensure
the
voices
of
all
are
heard.
Parents
teachers
in
our
community
I'll
use
my
business
background
as
an
asset
to
be
a
watchdog
to
make
sure
our
tax
dollars
are
not
wasted.
I'll
use
my
academic
and
professional
background
to
help
bring
our
community
together
and
plan
for
the
future.
I
will
fight
for
our
students,
staff
and
working
families,
because
our
people
make
the
district.
Great
and
I
will
do
this
with
respect
and
civility.
So
the
board
can
set
an
example
for
improving
morale
within
the
district.
D
It's
time
to
come
together
for
positive
change.
Please
vote
for
me
to
put
our
students,
teachers
and
staff
first,
so
that
parents
can
be
confident
that
their
kids
be
ready
for
their
best
futures.
You

more
about
me,

I

to

Thank
you.
E
E
Hi,
my
name
is
Maya
Olsen
and
I'm
running
for
a
seat
on
the
Bloomington
School
Board,
my
name
is
spelled
mi
a
it
is
pronounced
Maya,
as
in
hiya
Maya
I
come
from
a
family
of
strong
public
education
supporters,
for
example.
My
dad
was
a
high
school
teacher
and
coach
and
he
went
on
to
work
at
the
State
Department
of
Education,
where
he
created
the
adapted
physical
education
program
for
the
public
schools.
My
parents
helped
shape
my
advocacy
for
inclusion
not
only
for
students
with
special
needs,
but
for
all
students.
E
I
have
lived
in
Bloomington
for
over
30
years.
My
husband
grew
up
here.
He
graduated
from
Lincoln
his
three
brothers
from
Kennedy.
My
mother-in-law
now
works
in
the
poplar
bridge
elementary
school
lunchroom.
We
raised
two
children,
I'li
and
KY
in
the
Bloomington
Public
Schools.
They
were
off
to
a
great
start
in
the
early
childhood
program.
At
South.
Wood
on
up
through
graduation
at
Jefferson
I
was
fortunate
to
experience
two
decades
of
school
activities
as
a
parent
volunteer.
This
included
a
wide
variety
of
classroom
activities,
art
and
athletic
programs.
E
Mostly
I
have
experienced
our
schools
through
the
eyes
of
a
teacher.
I
have
been
dedicated
to
the
district
as
a
substitute
teacher
for
over
two
decades,
I
have
taught
in
every
grade
level
preschool
through
middle
school
throughout
the
district,
I
have
taught
nearly
every
classroom
setting,
including
a
wide
variety
of
specialists.
I
have
worked
with
students
of
various
backgrounds,
abilities
talents
and
needs.
I
have
not
only
taught
I
have
learned
much
from
each
experience.
E
I
have
always
known
that
I
wanted
to
work
with
and
advocate
for
children
since
volunteering
as
a
preteen
with
children
with
special
needs,
currently
working
as
an
advocacy
lead
at
the
Capitol
for
issues
related
to
children,
safety
and
well-being,
I
have
earned
degrees
in
child
psychology,
and
early
childhood
education
from
the
University
of
Minnesota
I
have
also
earned
an
elementary
education
degree
from
st.
Catherine.
University
I
have
completed
an
internship
at
the
bridge
for
runaway
youth,
where
I
gained
valuable
experience
in
roles
such
as
an
intake
councillor
and
a
crisis.
E
Phone
counsellor
I
understand
how
there
are
many
students
who
come
to
school
with
matters
far
more
urgent
than
learning
on
their
minds.
I
am
running
for
school
board
because
it
is
a
critical
time
for
public
education,
as
funds
are
being
drained
from
our
schools.
Teachers
are
feeling
overwhelmed
and
undervalued.
This
impacts
our
students.
If
we
care
about
the
students
as
I
know,
we
all
do.
We
must
also
care
about
their
teachers.
We
need
to
retain
the
enthusiasm
teachers
had
when
they
walked
in
the
classroom
on
the
first
day
of
their
teaching
career.
E
It
is
our
job
to
educate
each
and
every
student
who
comes
through
our
doors,
and
we
must
ask
teachers
what
they
need
in
order
to
do
so,
we
must
let
our
students
know
that
we
care
enough
to
invest
in
each
and
every
one
of
them.
We
must
make
certain
that
they
have
what
they
need
to
feel
safe,
secure
and
supported
at
school,
so
that
they
may
concentrate
on
their
studies.
E
My
experience
working
throughout
the
district
has
given
me
the
unique
opportunity
to
listen
to
the
voices
of
parents,
teachers,
support
staff
and
students.
I
am
ready
to
advocate
for
of
those
voices.
I
am
motivated
to
be
a
Bloomington
public
school
advocate
working
alongside
board
members
who
each
brings
something
different
to
the
table.
I
will
also
seek
out
voices
from
members
of
the
school
community
who
may
not
feel
represented
at
the
table
as
a
school
board.
Member
I
will
continue
meeting
with
our
state
representatives
on
issues
related
to
the
well-being
of
our
students.
E
My
experience,
working
with
a
vast
network
of
people
who
advocate
for
children,
including
a
wide
range
of
specialists,
legislators,
our
Sheriff
and
others
in
the
school
community,
gives
me
the
unique
opportunity
to
reach
out
and
connect
with
people
to
make
things
happen.
I
am
an
outside-of-the-box,
creative
thinker
and
I.
Welcome
the
opportunity
to
share
my
ideas
and
make
a
difference
in
our
school
community.
I.
Ask
that
you
invest
your
vote
in
me.
E
F
F
Hi,
my
name
is
Heather
Starks
and
I
am
running
for
Bloomington
School
Board
I
want
to
thank
the
League
of
Women
Voters
for
giving
me
this
opportunity
to
share
with
you
a
little
bit
more
about
myself
and
for
you,
the
viewer
for
taking
the
time
to
learn
about
me
and
my
fellow
candidates.
So
a
little
bit
about
me,
I
was
born
and
raised
in
Bloomington
Minnesota.
My
mother
was
also
raised
here.
She
is
from
the
first
graduating
class
of
Kennedy
high
school
back
in
1966.
I
am
a
Kennedy
grad.
F
My
husband
is
a
Kennedy
grad
and
our
oldest
son
will
be
graduating
from
Kennedy
High
School
in
2021.
So
we
are
very
proud
of
the
roots
that
we
have
put
down
in
this
community
and
the
fact
that
we
are
raising
our
kids
in
the
same
district
that
we
grew
up
in.
So
as
I
mentioned,
we
have
a
child,
that's
a
junior
at
Kennedy.
We
also
have
a
daughter
who
is
a
freshman
at
Kennedy,
and
we
have
a
son
who
is
a
5th
grader
at
Hillcrest,
professionally
I
am
an
educator.
F
I
have
a
teaching
license
in
the
state
of
Minnesota
I've.
Recently
been
substitute
teaching
in
the
early
childhood
and
parent
education
classes
in
both
Bloomington
and
Richfield,
but
prior
to
that
I
taught
seventh
grade,
American
history
and
sixth
grade
English
and
reading
in
the
Rosemont
Apple
Valley
Eagan
school
district,
and
when
baby
number
two
came
along.
My
husband
and
I
said
you
know
why
don't
I
stay
home
and
raise
the
kids
and,
to
be
honest,
the
transition
from
full-time
employment
to
raising
the
kids
full-time
was
not
a
positive
one.
F
So
I'm
very
grateful
that
I
found
the
ECF
II
program.
The
early
childhood
family
education
program
here
in
Bloomington
absolutely
saved
my
sanity
and
saved
my
parenting
and
through
that
group
I
found
the
Parent
Advisory
Council,
which
is
exactly
what
it
sounds
like.
It's
a
group
of
parents
that
would
advise
the
director
of
the
early
childhood
program
on
issues,
that
of
things
that
she
had
to
make.
F
Decisions
about
and
I
absolutely
got
hooked
because
my
voice
was
valued
as
a
parent,
and
it
was
a
really
interesting
way
for
me
to
stay
involved
in
education
because
I
wasn't
in
the
classroom
anymore,
but
I
could
find
my
voice
as
a
parent.
So
I
continued
that
work
and
the
Parent
Advisory
Council
through
the
PTA
at
Hillcrest.
I
was
the
president.
F
There
I've
done
PTA
at
Oak,
Grove
middle
and
at
Kennedy
High
School
I've
served
as
the
vice
president
as
the
Bloomington
PTSA,
Council
and
I
am
now
the
president
of
the
Minnesota
PT
I'm
in
my
third
year
there
and
I
absolutely
love
the
work
that
we
do
in
the
district.
I
also
serve
as
the
chair
of
the
Bloomington
advocacy
council
I've
served
on
the
calendar
committee,
which
is
one
of
the
craziest
puzzles
that
you'll
ever
have
to
put
together
and
I've,
also
been
on
the
Community
Services
Advisory
Board.
F
There
are
a
few
things
that
I
would
like
to
address
as
a
school
board
member,
just
a
deeper
dive,
some
places,
one
is
family
and
community
engagement.
The
Bloomington
school
district
does
have
a
community
engagement
plan
right
now.
I
would
just
like
to
see
some
things
grow
in
there.
One
of
the
filters
that
I
like
to
put
things
through
there
is
no
decisions
about
us
without
us.
F
One
has
a
504
and
one
has
an
IEP,
so
I
know
the
the
range
of
educational
experiences
that
my
children
need
to
be
successful
and
I
know
that
that's
true
for
many
kids
in
our
district
and
I'd
like
to
see
us
expand
those
opportunities,
especially
for
our
middle
school
students.
The
next
thing
is
mental
health
services.
So
one
in
five
teenagers
struggles
with
the
mental
health
issue.
F
We
are
currently
nine
point
four
percent,
just
in
inflationary
increases
since
2003
and
I'd
like
to
see
that
be
addressed,
as
well
as
the
fact
that
Bloomington
public
schools,
while
all
schools
in
the
in
the
state,
have
to
decide
their
budgets
before
they
know
how
much
money
they're
getting
from
the
state,
and
that
doesn't
make
any
sense
to
me.
So
I'd
like
to
see
those
four
things
addressed
if
I
were
to
be
elected
to
the
Bloomington
School
Board.
