Description
On this week's episode of Bloomington Today, we'll check out how Minnesotan's celebrated 'Give to the Max Day' at the Mall of America, and visit the City's water laboratory to find out just what they test for, when ensuring your drinking water is safe and clean.
A
B
Welcome
to
bloomington
today,
I'm
caitlin
cockriel
thanks
for
joining
us
bloomington
may
be
the
third
largest
city
in
the
metro
area,
but
that
doesn't
mean
it's
without
teeming
wildlife
and
many
acres
of
untouched
natural
terrain.
In
this
week's
in
the
loop
segment,
we'll
see
how
officials
are
making
moves
to
revitalize
the
river
bluff
area,
which
will
better
bloomington
for
decades
to
come.
B
One
of
bloomington's
greatest
treasures
is
the
abundance
of
natural
habitat
nestled
along
the
city's
southern
boundary
inside
the
minnesota
valley,
wildlife,
refuge,
animals
make
their
homes,
trees
and
plants
grow
undisturbed,
and
residents
can
unwind
and
get
some
exercise.
Just
a
few
steps
out
of
the
bustling
city.
C
It's
one
of
few
throughout
the
country
and
we
consider
it
an
urban
refuge.
It's
a
it's:
a
national
wildlife
refuge
located
in
a
major
urban
center
in
the
united
states
and
and
there's
there's
a
couple
of
benefits
to
that.
One.
C
Is
that
we're
here
providing
outdoor
recreation
opportunities
for
for
many
publics,
the
large
populations
in
the
metro
area,
but
we're
also
preserving
some
of
the
most
important
wildland
habitat
the
the
bluffs
and
the
wetlands
in
the
river
in
the
minnesota
river
valley,
for
the
benefit
of
really
all
americans
but
minnesotans
and
residents
of
bloomington
in
particular,
because
those
are
the
folks
that
use
the
refuge
the
most.
B
C
Well,
the
refuge
has
been
participating
in
the
south
loop
district
from
the
beginning,
and
we
see
it
as
a
great
benefit
to
the
refuge.
I
think
there's
a
number
of
important
aspects
for
the
refuge
is
we
see
we?
We
agree
with
the
philosophy
that
south
luke
district
is
an
active
lifestyle,
getting
people
out
and
involved
in
the
environment.
Of
course
the
refuge
is
here,
and
we
want
to
be
a
participant
to
that.
We
also
see
the
south
loop
district
as
providing
more
access
to
the
refuge.
D
We're
recognizing
that
one
of
the
biggest
assets
of
that
area
is
the
minnesota
river
valley
and
the
wildlife
refuge
that
is
along
its
south
border.
Currently,
there's
a
number
of
trail
heads
rather
informal.
Currently
that
are
very
underused,
and
so
as
part
of
that
district
plan,
part
of
the
concept
is
to
provide
enhanced
trail
heads
and
additional
trailheads
to
provide
better
pedestrian
access
into
the
river
valley.
B
D
B
Bloomington
is
excited
to
be
going
forward
with
plans
for
the
south
loop
district
if
you're
interested
in
learning
more
continue
to
tune
into
bloomington
today,
where
we'll
frequently
bring
residents
updates
on
what's
happening
in
the
area
through
our
in
the
loop
segment.
Also,
you
can
visit
the
city's
website,
keyword,
search
south
loop
from
urbanizing
along
the
minnesota
river
to
now
making
sure
the
water
that
hits
your
faucet
is
healthy
and
great
tasting
we'll
step
into
bloomington's
water
laboratory
and
see
how
city
staff
make
that
happen.
B
E
B
F
What
I
have
to
do
is
I
have
to
make
a
curve
to
tell
me
a
curve
is
like
a
quality
control
to
make
sure
that
this
probe
is
working
properly
before
I
actually
test
the
samples,
so
I
take
actual
fluoride,
we
call
it
a
standard
and
I
spike
samples
to
make
sure
it's
reading
what
it's
supposed
to
be.
So,
when
I
put
this
on,
this
should
read
one
milligram
per
liter.
B
E
B
In
addition
to
ensuring
great
drinking
water
quality
to
bloomington
residents
and
businesses,
staff
at
the
william,
lloyd
analytical
laboratory
also
provide
testing
services
to
our
own
environmental
health
division
for
storm
water
quality
monitoring
purposes.
They
also
provide
testing
to
other
public
water
utilities
around
the
metro,
as
well
as
private,
well
owners.
B
At
the
november
17th
minnesota
american
public
works
fall
conference
city
officials
were
presented
with
the
award
bloomington
was
awarded
after
several
green
efforts
were
executed
in
the
city
these
past
few
years.
Environmental
efforts
like
restoring
several
areas
of
the
city
to
naturalized
low
maintenance,
prairie
spaces
like
the
project
this
past
summer,
outside
of
civic,
plaza
and
public
works.
B
The
pervious
concrete
parking
lot
located
at
public
works
and
harrison
park
was
also
highlighted.
This
special
kind
of
concrete
installed
last
september
is
made
up
of
porous,
pavement
and
rock
base
which
soaks
up
storm
water
and
reduces
annual
runoff
by
90
percent,
greatly
reducing
pollution
to
area
bodies
of
water.
B
The
installation
of
several
residential
rainwater
gardens
was
also
a
factor
in
bloomington
being
awarded
the
environmental
stewardship
award,
rainwater
gardens,
add
aesthetics
and
wildlife
to
neighborhoods,
while
recharging
groundwater
aquifers
and
reducing
runoff
into
nine
mile
creek
watershed
district.
A
big
congrats
is
an
order
to
bloomington
public
works
staff.
Thank
you
for
keeping
our
city
beautiful
and
as
green
of
a
way
as
possible.
G
No,
no
all
the
organizations
and
the
programs
and
the
groups
that
we
talked
about
today,
the
people
that
came
up
and
accepted
funds
for
the
different
programs,
each
one
of
those
are
affecting
the
lives
of
many
many
people
and
our
goal
shouldn't
be
to
help
one
person.
We
want
to
help
as
many
people
as
we
can.
B
Bcpa
is
a
non-profit
volunteer-driven
organization
that
raises
money
through
the
long-running
bookum
fundraiser.
It
is
here
that
residents
donate
books
and
those
books
are
later
sold
in
a
large,
community-wide
sale
at
hugely
discounted
rates.
Next
year,
the
bcpa
estimates
that
they'll
go
over
one
million
dollars
in
grants
given
to
city
organizations
over
the
years.
The
2012
book
of
sale
will
be
the
20th
year.
B
The
bcpa
has
put
on
the
event
and
officials
are
asking
residents
to
mark
their
calendars,
as
the
event
will
take
place
on
june,
2nd
through
the
16th
with
book
collection
sites
opening
in
early
april
so
start
collecting.
Now
it's
now
time
for
a
short
break
when
we
come
back
we'll
be
joined
by
an
advocate
working
with
one
local
agency
to
stop
domestic
abuse
stay
right
here.
F
C
I
A
E
F
A
I
B
Welcome
back
to
bloomington
today,
we
are
now
happy
to
be
joined
by
cornerstone
development
coordinator
courtney.
Poya.
Welcome
to
the
show
courtney!
Thank
you
for
having
me
well,
courtney
is
joining
us
from
a
facility
called
cornerstone.
Why
don't
you
start
by
giving
us
a
bit
of
background
on
what
cornerstone
does
and
their
mission
sure.
J
Cornerstone's
mission
is
to
prevent
domestic
abuse
and
our
goal
is
to
break
the
generational
cycle
of
violence
by
addressing
the
crisis,
immediate
aftermath
and
long-term
effects
of
domestic
violence
on
families,
and
we
were
started
in
1983
by
a
group
of
community
women
who
recognized
a
need
for
these
types
of
services
in
south
hennepin
county
and
at
that
time
it
was.
Domestic
violence
was
an
issue
that
people
didn't
really
talk
about,
so
they
were
very
forward
thinking
in
their
in
their
plans
and
recognizing
that
need
absolutely.
B
J
I
think
one
important
thing
for
people
to
to
know
or
to
remember
is
that
domestic
violence
isn't
just
necessarily
the
physical
aspect,
there's
also
an
emotional
abuse
aspect
and
oftentimes
a
mental
abuse
aspect,
so
those
three
are
working
in
often
in
conjunction,
and
one
other
important
thing
to
remember
is
that
the
relationship
looks
different
to
the
abuser
than
it
does
to
the
person
being
abused
so
to
the
abuser.
It
can
look
like
everything
is
fine,
there's
something
that
sets
them
off
and
it
there's
a
physical
incident
and
then
everything
goes
back
to
being
fine.
A
J
For
the
person
who's
experiencing
the
abuse,
there's,
as
you
said,
sort
of
three
phases,
the
first
being
an
escalation
period
where
it's
very
stressful,
there's
a
lot
of
mental
and
emotional
abuse
that
goes
on.
It
culminates
in
a
physical
incident
and
then,
after
that,
the
abuser
recognizes
that
this
person
might
be
trying
to
leave
or
they
want
to
hang
on
to
them.
B
J
Have
a
for
families
who
are
in
or
individuals
who
are
in
imminent
danger
of
domestic
violence?
We
operate
an
emergency
shelter
which
is
open,
24
hours
a
day
365
days
a
year,
and
in
addition
to
that,
we
offer
legal
and
supportive
services.
So
if
people
need
an
order
for
protection
written
or
they
need
help
navigating
the
legal
system,
we
can
help
with
that.
We
also
have
support
groups,
and
so
we
provide
a
holistic
continuum
of
services
for
families.
J
But
the
the
area
that
we
feel
most
proud
of-
and
we
feel
is
very
innovative-
is
our
work
with
kids
because
at
cornerstone
we
believe
the
only
way
to
break
the
cycle
of
violence
is
through
prevention,
so
for
kids,
who've
grown
up
in
a
violent
home,
they
often
experience
profound
effects,
so
it
can
affect
them
socially
and
academically
at
school.
It
can
be
manifest
itself
as
physical,
health
or
mental
health
issues.
B
J
I
would
love
to.
It
is
my
favorite
time
of
year
at
cornerstone,
so
essentially,
what
we
do
is
all
the
kids
that
we
serve
throughout
the
year.
We
invite
them
back
over
a
three-year
period,
so
this
year
it's
december
15th,
16th
and
17th,
and
we
have
the
kids
come
back
and
they're
able
to
pick
out
a
gift
for
their
mom
and
for
their
siblings.
J
The
kids
are
so
joyous
about
giving
they
don't
make
it
to
the
parking
lot
before
they
tell
their
mom
what
they
got
her,
which
is
wonderful,
but
it's
for
a
lot
of
the
families
we
serve.
It's
really
the
only
holiday
celebration
or
gifts
that
they'll
be
able
to
have
so
it
means
a
lot
to
them
and
it
means
an
incredible
amount
to
us
to
the
volunteers
and
the
staff
to
be
able
to
to
work
with
families
around
this
time
of
year.
But
absolutely
it's
kind.
B
Of
a
backwards
program
in
comparison
to
a
lot
of
what
we
see
during
the
holidays,
a
lot
is,
you
know,
giving
to
the
less
fortunate
families,
which
is
wonderful.
This
one
you're
allowing
you
know
the
backwards
to
happen.
Yes,
the
kids
to
give
to
their
family.
So
that's
very
that's
very
unique.
How
can
residents
help
with
with
santa
shop
sure.
J
J
So
if
folks
are
interested
in
helping
out,
we
can
we
accept
donations
of
new
items
for
moms
or
for
kids
anywhere
from
babies
to
teenagers.
We
can
need
the
whole
gamut.
So,
as
you
can
imagine,
anything,
moms
would
need
like
robes
or
you
know,
jewelry
or
anything
fun
that
kids
would
want
to
pick
out
for
mom
or
that
they'd
want
to
pick
out
for
their
siblings
and
we're
accepting
the
donations
at
cornerstone
anytime
up
until
december,
probably
december
14th.
B
By
well,
we
learned
a
lot
today,
not
only
about
the
santa
shop,
but
about
kind
of
what
goes
on
at
cornerstone.
If
someone
were
interested
in
you
know,
volunteering
or
helping
with
sanchez
shop,
where
where's
the
resource
that
residents
can
can
find
out
more
information.
Sure.
J
You
can
visit
our
website,
it's
cornerstone,
emma's
in
michael
and
is
in
nancy.org,
and
we
also,
if
folks
want
to
come
in
and
take
a
tour
learn
more
about
the
agency.
We're
always
happy
to
do
that
or
if
they
want
to
come,
learn
more
about
volunteer
opportunities.
We
can't
we
can
couldn't
run
our
agency
without
volunteers,
so
we
really
appreciate
people's
interest
in
any
capacity.
B
K
B
Hundreds
of
people
gathered
at
the
mall
of
america
on
november
16th
not
to
get
an
early
start
on
their
christmas
shopping,
but
rather
to
give
to
the
max
this
year
marks
the
third
annual
give
to
the
max
day
by
give
minnesota,
often
called
the
great
minnesota
give
together
it's
a
day
to
make
the
most
of
your
charitable
donations
from
midnight
to
11
59
p.m.
On
the
16th,
every
donation
you
make
gives
your
favorite
organization
the
chance
to
win
even
more
money.
H
To
the
max
day
is
the
best
day
to
give
is
that
we
have
several
prizes.
There
are
over
200
thousand
dollars
in
prizes
each
hour.
Someone
is
drawn
randomly
and
a
thousand
dollars
is
added
to
their
donation
and
then
at
the
end
of
24
hours,
one
lucky
donor
will
be
drawn
for
a
ten
thousand
dollar
holden
ticket
is
what
we're
calling
it.
So
it's
like
winning
the
jackpot
for
your
favorite
non-profit.
B
Various
non-profit
organizations
were
on
hand
to
share
their
missions,
and
computers
were
provided
so
that
residents
could
stop
by
and
make
a
donation
online
entertainment
acts
came
and
went
throughout
the
course
of
the
24-hour
event.
If
you
missed
the
2011,
give
to
the
max
day,
don't
worry,
give
minnesota
has
a
solution
for
you.
H
B
And
if
you
don't
have
a
favorite
charity
yet
give
minnesota
has
a
search
component
that
allows
you
to
search
keywords
like
kids
bloomington
and
it
compiles
a
list
for
you
of
all
charities
involving
kids
in
bloomington
in
total.
The
third
annual
give
to
the
max
day
received
13.56
million
dollars
for
nearly
4
000
minnesota
charities.
That's
more
than
3
million
dollars
more
than
last
year's
event.
B
If
you're
a
person
that
frequents
area
public
libraries
listen
up
recently,
hennepin
county
has
released
information
about
some
new
rules
that
could
affect
you
effective
january
2012,
hennepin,
county
library,
users
will
have
a
limit
of
30
checkouts
of
physical
materials
like
books
and
dvds.
The
current
limit
is
100
items
that
can
be
out
at
one
time.
B
It's
now
time
for
another
arts
at
the
plaza
segment
recently,
the
upstairs
atrium
gallery
at
civic
plaza
has
turned
over
and
the
instructor
student
art
exhibition
has
moved
into
the
space.
This
exhibition
began
on
november
17th
and
will
run
through
january
13th.
It's
a
variety
of
pieces
by
adult
bloomington,
theater
and
art
center
students
and
teachers.
B
If
you've
never
visited
bloomington
civic
plaza
located
at
1800,
west
old
shakopee
road,
you
may
not
know
that
there
are
more
than
just
galleries
filled
with
various
types
of
art.
The
rose
schneider
gift
shop
is
filled
with
special
pieces
available
for
purchase
at
any
given
time.
You'll
find
artwork
posters,
ceramics,
glass,
work
and
books
created
by
regional
artists.
B
Much
like
the
exhibitions
in
the
galleries,
artists
submit
their
work
to
a
review
panel
who
vote
on
whether
or
not
the
pieces
will
be
accepted
into
the
gift
shop
items
admitted
will
remain
for
at
least
six
months.
The
gift
shop
located
near
the
west
entrance
is
open
monday
through
friday,
from
9
am
to
5
pm.
So
if
you're
looking
for
a
one-of-a-kind
holiday
gift
be
sure
to
stop
in
to
the
rose
schneider
gift
shop,
artists
interested
in
selling
items
in
the
shop
should
visit
www.bloomingtonartcenter.com.
B
To
download
a
vendor
application,
one
well-known
group
of
musicians
gathered
at
bloomington
civic,
plaza
in
late
november
to
give
listeners
a
musical
treat
as
well
as
an
overseas
escape
the
medalist
