Description
On this week's episode of Bloomington Today we'll let residents know what not to do with their leaves and other yard waste, and find out the proper way to create a home fire safety plan with your family.
A
Welcome
to
Bloomington
today,
I'm
kailyn
real
thanks
for
joining
us.
The
communication
is
a
key
component
in
educating
and
informing
residents
and
businesses
in
our
community.
At
a
recent
national
conference,
Bloomington
received
top
accolades
from
the
city,
county
communications
and
marketing
associations
or
3cm
a
savvy
awards
at
the
October
17th
city
council,
meeting
communications
administrator,
Jeanine
Hill
presented
two
awards
to
council
members,
the
city's
internal
newsletter,
the
insider
received
a
first-place
award
with
tremendous
feedback
from
the
judges
in.

B
A
Internal
newsletter
is
now
a
six-time
savvy
award
winner
in
the
internal
publications
category.
The
briefing
received
its
award
in
the
external
publications
category
and
has
received
seven
awards
from
three
cma.
In
the
past
decade.
Bloomington
has
received
a
total
of
twenty-seven
awards
from
this
national
competition.
A
The
week
of
october,
eleventh
Bloomington
Police
issued
a
citywide
alert,
urging
residents
to
lock
up
their
vehicles
and
garages.
Numerous
reports
of
car
prowls
in
residential
neighborhoods
have
been
brought
to
law
enforcement.
Attention
items,
including
checkbooks,
gym
bags,
GPS
systems
and
laptops
were
taken
from
unlocked
vehicles
parked
in
driveways
overnight,
as
well
as
from
unlocked
garages.
Officers
will
be
on
high
alert
until
the
suspect
is
caught.
In
the
meantime,
there
are
some
things
residents
can
do
to
protect
their
property.
The.
C
Biggest
thing
is
to
protect
yourself
by
making
yourself
less
of
a
target.
Hide
your
valuables,
preferably
don't
keep
them
in
your
car,
but
if
you
do
hide
them,
hide
them
before
you
get
to
a
location,
sometimes
that
these
are
sitting
in
a
parking
lot
and
looking
for
targets,
and
so,
if
you
get
out
when
you're
at
that
location
and
take
your
briefcase
and
put
it
in
the
trunk,
someone
might
see
that
and
then
break
into
your
vehicle
and
try
to
access
the
trunk.
C
So
if
you
can
put
those
valuables
away
before
you
get
there,
that's
going
to
make
me
less
likely
to
be
a
target
and
keeping
the
valuables
out
of
sight.
Locking
your
vehicles
is
always
something
we
recommend
and
don't
hide
the
spare
keys
in
the
center
console,
or
something
like
that,
because
again,
when
that
these
are
rifling
through
your
car,
looking
for
your
valuables,
they
might
find
the
keys.
A
Bloomington
police
would
like
to
remind
residents
to
make
sure
their
garages
are
secure
both
during
the
day
and
at
night.
Residents
are
asked
to
report
suspicious
people
or
vehicles
immediately
by
calling
911
Bloomington's
general
election
is
growing
nearer,
and
the
city
would
like
to
remind
residents
that
Civic
Plaza
will
be
extending
normal
business
hours
from
now
until
the
election
on
select
days,
Civic
Plaza
will
be
the
polling
place
for
absentee
ballots,
every
Saturday
in
October,
as
well
as
the
first
saturday
in
november
from
ten
a.m.
to
1pm.
A
There
will
be
additional
voting
hours
on
monday
november,
seventh
from
8am
to
5pm.
This
gives
voters
the
opportunity
to
cast
a
ballot
in
the
general
election
who
are
unable
to
vote
on
tuesday
november
eighth.
This
city's
website
is
a
great
resource
to
learn
more
about
the
seats

election
view,
sample

and
more
also
tune
in
to
the

select
times
to
see
the
League
of
Women
Voters
candidate

A
This
program
airs
several
times
prior
to
the
election
and
introduce
its
residents
to
the
candidates
running
for
the
council,
seats
and
mayoral
seat.
These
are
just
a
few
of
the
many
times
you

times
this
program
airs
as
the
seasons
change.
The
temperature
isn't,
the
only
thing
that
drops
the
trees
lose
their
leaves
and
city
engineers
want
to
make
sure
residents
are
disposing
of
their
yard
waste
in
the
proper
way.
A
D
A
D
And
grass
clippings
can
be
just
as
detrimental
to
our
water
resources
as
fertilizers,
pesticides
and
other
like
motor
oils,
or
something
like
that
and
and
the
reason
why
they're
damaging
is
because
they're
increasing
our
nutrient
loading
in
these
water
bodies
and
therefore
increasing
plant
and
algae
growth.
Grito.
A
Further
explains
that
leaves
in
the
storm
sewers
can
cause
major
blockages
and
even
some
road
flooding.
Crews
were
out
on
a
rainy
day
in
October
dealing
with
just
that
on
several
Bloomington
streets,
maintenance
staff
answer
calls
and
dispatch
cruise
out
to
unclog
storm
sewer
openings.
There
are
things
residents
can
do
to
help,
however,
residents.
D
Can
help
by
you
know
just
just
keeping
the
the
leaves
out
of
the
curb
and
gutter
just
in
front
of
their
home
and
helping
by
cleaning
out
catch
basins
that
they
may
see.
Clogged
with
leaves
that
if
they
can't
handle,
you
know
cleaning
the
catch
basin
out
themselves,
just
they
can
call
it
call
the
city
and
we'll
get
some
crews
out
there
to
get
that
taken
care
of.
A
D
Should
be
to
be
cleaning
up,
the
curb
and
gutter
in
front
of
their
street
and
raking
raking
their
leaves,
and
they
can
either
compost
them
to
recycle
the
nutrients.
They
can
use
them
as
winter
mulch
around
around
some
landscaping
or
they
can
bag
them
and
set
them
out
for
their
for
their
trash
hauler.
To
pick
up
grito.
A
Also
wants
to
remind
residents
to
use
compostable
bags
for
yard
waste
as
of
2010.
The
typical
black
plastic
bags
used
in
the
past
bag
leaves
and
grass
are
no
longer
accepted
by
refuse
haulers
and
in
other
outdoor
news,
when
it
rains
often
times
it
pours
and
city
engineers
want
to
remind
residents
of
some
environmentally
friendly
ways
to
keep
that
water
from
polluting
area
lakes
and
ponds
spring
and
fall
are
rainy
seasons
in
Minnesota,
and
why
not
do
something
with
that?
A
Falling
water
engineers
want
to
encourage
residents
to
keep
rain
water
on
their
property
by
directing
down
spots
towards
lawns
and
gardens,
storm
water
that
runs
off
rooftops
and
driveways
carry
pollutants
which
can
negatively
impact
area
bodies
of
water.
If
that
water
enters
a
storm.
Sewer
residents
can
also
use
rainwater
barrels
to
reuse
later
for
gardening
or
construct
rain
water
gardens
where
your
yard
slopes
that
can
capture
up
to
9,000
gallons
of
water
each
year

A
It's
now
time
for
a
short
break
when
we
come
back
we'll
be
joined
by
two
parks
and
recreation
staff.
Members
to
let
us
in
on
some
upcoming
fall
family
events
going
on
in
Bloomington
and
also
will
unveil
some
of
the
city's
park.
Improvement
projects
are
ready
in
motion
and
coming
up
next
year,
stay
with
us.
How.
H
G
A
Welcome
back
to
bloomington
today
we
are
now
joined
by
carrie
hemp
and
randy.
Quali
randy
manages
the
Parks
and
Recreation
Division
while
Kari
is
a
supervisor.
Welcome
thanks
for
being
here
today,
no
matter
how
we
feel
about
it
fall
is
here.
We
know
that
and
Parks
and
Recreation
staff
is
busy
coming
up
with
things
that
family
and
young
people
can
do
during
the
fall
Carrie.
Why
don't
you
tell
us
about
some
things
planned
for
Bloomington?
This
fall
well.
F
Coming
up,
we
have
our
halloween
party,
which
is
a
collaboration
with
the
optimist
in
northwestern
Health
Sciences
University
and
richfield
Bloomington
credit
union.
It's
held
on
October
thirty-first
on
Halloween
night,
from
six
to
eight.
We
will
have
trick-or-treat
alley,
which
is
a
big
hit
from
seven
o'clock
to
eight
o'clock.
At
six
o'clock,
though,
we
do
have
games
and
we
will
have
some
entertainment
as
well.
So
you
come
out,
have
some
fun
bring
your
non-perishable
donations
for
veep
and
come
out
have
some
fun
as
a
free
event.
F
A
F
Do
have
a
preschool
program
with
little
flip
stirs
and
it's
our
gymnastics
program.
It's
held
on
Tuesdays
and
Fridays.
It's
a
monthly
program,
so
kids
can
sign
up
on
a
monthly
basis.
So
if
they
would
like
to
do
gymnastics
one
month,
but
not
the
next,
they
can
pick
or
choose
which
months
they'd
like
to
do
gymnastics.
So
it's
four-thirty
ages,
30
months,
25
years
of
age.
Oh.
A
They
really
just
get
to
get
their
feet:
wet
and
Gator.
Try,
yes,
very
nice!
Well,
switching
gears
a
bit.
The
city
takes
quite
a
bit
of
pride
in
the
mini
parks
that
we
have,
and
some
recently
completed,
updates
have
gone
on
in
our
parks
and
there
are
some
for
the
future
as
well
and
Randy.
Why
don't
you
tell
us
about
some
of
the
improvement
projects
that
are
currently
in
the
works?
A
I
I
Of
the
projects
that
were
undertaking
is
over
at
cedar
crest
park,
which
is
up
on
86
to
Bloomington.
It's
actually
a
park
land
that
is
leased
by
the
city
from
Cedar,
Valley
Church,
and
we
have
reconstructed
the
ball
field
over
at
that
location.
There
was
one
there
many
years
ago
and
when
the
renovations
occurred
at
the
church
and
they
had
to
redo
their
parking
lot,
we
had
to
move
the
ball
field,
so
the
ball
field
is
back
in
it's
a
youth
softball
field
for
a
primarily
girls
softball
for
the
under-10
212,
it's
a
smaller
field.
I
It
only
has
about
a
200-foot
radius
for
the
outfield,
so
it's
not
really
an
adult
field,
but
it
is
a
you
feel,
but
it
will
certainly
serve
the
local
youth
organizations,
including
the
Bloomington
Athletic
Association,
so
that
one
is
the
grass
is
growing.
The
fence
is
up,
the
egg
line
is
in
we're,
hoping
the
grass
will
grow
and
they'll
be
using
it
by
next
summer.
We
also
have
playgrounds
going
in
at
three
locations
in
the
city.
They
include
cooks,
play
lot,
Logan
play
lots
and
Reynolds
park.
The
cooks
play
a
lot
is
almost
done.
I
We
have
a
few
more
items
to
put
in,
but
we're
very
close
there.
The
the
Logan
play
a
lot
is
currently
under
construction
is
out
there
yesterday
and
they're
busy
putting
in
the
post
and
putting
in
the
rest
of
the
equipment
and
as
soon
as
they
finish
up
at
cooks,
they're
going
to
go
over
to
reynolds
and
wrap
that
work
up.
We
should
expect
most
of
this
work
to
be
completed,
probably
by
the
first
week
in
november,
Wow.
A
I
A
lot
going
on
perhaps
the
biggest
project
that
we're
going
to
be
undertaking
is
the
renovation
of
the
bathhouse
over
at
the
bloomington
family
aquatic
center.
The
bathhouse
is
the
original
bath
house
that
was
built
back
in
nineteen
seventy
and
while
we
did
renovate
the
pool
nine
years
ago,
unfortunately,
we
didn't
have
enough
funding
to
also
undertake
the
renovation
of
the
bathhouse.
I
So
now
we're
finally
getting
to
the
point
where
we
can
afford
to
under
kate
undertake
this
work,
and
so
will
be
a
basic
gutting,
the
locker
room
area
and
putting
in
new
lockers
new
fixtures
and
really
sprucing
up
the
location,
we're
also
creating
a
central
hallway
down
the
middle
of
the
building,
where
there'll
also
be
a
couple
of
family
changing
rooms,
so
that,
if,
when
I
used
to
take
my
daughter
to
a
pool
and
she's
five
or
six
years
old,
I,
don't
have
to
bring
it
through
the
men's
locker
room.
Now.
G
I
Can
go
to
a
place
and
change
and
not
have
to
worry
about
that
type
of
situation,
so
I
think
that's
going
to
greatly
improve
our
operation.
We
also
will
be
adding
a
new
office
space,
locker
room
or
a
lifeguard
location
for
their
office
and
also
a
separate
first
aid
room
so
that
we
can
address
any
issues
that
may
happen
while
people
utilizing
the
facility.
I
A
I
I
Doesn't
sound
really
old
to
a
person,
that's
very
old,
for
a
water
slide?
Okay,
so
it
is
time,
and
so
we
are
going
to
be
replacing
those
they'll
be
in
the
same
location.
Our
intention
is
to
provide
a
little
different
experience
than
what
they
have
now
I.
Think
one
of
the
slides
is
going
to
be
open-ended,
while
the
other
one
is
going
to
be
an
enclosed
tube
slide.
So
you
get
a
whole
different
type
of
experience
for
people,
so
they
can
choose
one
or
the
other
and
or
keep
alternating.
I
A
F
I
To
think
that
parks
and
recreation
builds
community,
this
is
the
place
where
people
gather.
This
is
where
a
place
where
people
come
and
meet
their
neighbors
and
make
connections,
whether
it's
at
the
farmers
market
or
it's
going
to
watch
your
children
play
in
a
be
a
softball
game
or
just
taking
a
walk
around
a
trail
Bloomington's
a
great
community,
because
we
have
a
solid,
Park
and
Recreation
system.
So
that's
why
we
continue
to
invest
in
our
system
and
that's
why
we
continue
offer
outstanding
programming
absolutely.
A
Wonderful
well
we'd
like
to
thank
both
Randy
and
Carrie
for
being
here
with
us
today.
If
you'd
like
any
more

on
the
Halloween
program,

or

more
is
available.

A
This
year's
campaign
will
include
the
enforcement
of
Minnesota's
child's
passenger
safety
law,
which
requires
a
child
to
remain
in
a
booster
seat
until
the
age
of
eight
or
until
they
are
four
feet.
Nine
inches

as
reported
on
a
past
episode
of
Bloomington
today,
October
9th
through
the
15th,
was
National
Fire,
Prevention
Week,
and
this
year's
theme
was
protecting.
Your

fire
officials
want
to

residents
of
the
importance
of
having
an

Your
whole

of
and
believe
that
fire

education
is
the
best
prevention
tool.
They

K
A
K
A
Saturday,
the
15th,
all
six
of
Bloomington's
fire
stations
were
open
to
the
public,
allowing
residents
to
come
in.
Take
a
look
at
the
equipment,
participate
in
various
safety
demonstrations
and
meet
the
city's
fire
police
and
public
works.
Personnel
officials
tell
us
that
there
was
a
wonderful
turnout
at
all
of
the
open

locations.
A
Well,
if
you
love
winters
in
Minnesota,
why
not
