Description
On this week's episode of Bloomington Today, we'll take a look at the multi-million dollar renovations being made to the Mall of America's east-side, and talk to City Forester Paul Edwardson, about how to fend off Emerald Ash Borer.
A
Welcome
to
bloomington
today,
I'm
kalyn
cockriel
thanks
for
joining
us.
More
than
40
million
people
visit
the
mall
of
america.
Every
year,
mall
officials
are
excited
to
announce
a
multi-million
dollar
renovation.
We
spent
a
day
at
the
mall
as
staff.
Let
us
in
on
just
what
changes
are
in
store
for
the
largest
retail
shopping
center
in
the
country.
A
Four
point:
three
miles
of
total
store
front
footage.
Eleven
thousand
year
round
employees
large
enough
for
seven
yankee
stadiums
to
fit
inside.
I'm
talking
about
one
of
the
world's
most
visited
tourist
attractions,
bloomington's
own
mall
of
america,
mall
officials
are
excited
as
construction
is
in
full
swing
to
give
one
wing
of
the
4
million
200
000
square
foot
shopping
center,
a
major
makeover.
B
East
broadway
is
four
levels
and
includes
the
rotunda
and
again
we're
using
the
same
architect,
and
the
architect
is
world
famous
they're
based
in
new
york
gabellini,
and
they
do
an
amazing
job.
So
they're
going
to
re,
transform
our
east
side
into
kind
of
a
soho
urban
loft
feel
again
much
brighter
much
fresher
and
that
will
again
help
us
attract
more
customers
and
more
tenants.
A
New
ceilings,
new
pillars,
crystal
chandeliers
and
new
marble
floors
are
all
a
part
of
the
six
million
dollar
makeover
that
took
place
last
year
to
south
avenue.
Part
of
the
mall
of
america
and
as
mall
officials
hoped
new
high-end
retailers
moved
into
the
mall,
largely
because
of
the
renovations
for.
B
The
east
side
renovation,
it
is,
it
is
costly
about
nine
million
dollars,
but
we're
doing
so
much
work
for
that.
All
of
the
flooring
has
been
completely
stripped
down
to
the
concrete
and
will
be
covered
with
beautiful
new
marble
as
well
all
of
the
pillars
all
of
the
walls
will
be
redone,
we're
stripping
out
all
of
the
old
lighting,
putting
in
all
brand
new
lighting
new
ceilings
as
well.
That
includes
the
rotunda
which
is
going
to
have
a
wonderful
effect,
including
the
elevator
bank.
It's
going
to
look
spectacular.
B
The
one
thing
that
really
keeps
mall
of
america
successful
is
that
we
continue
to
drive
traffic
to
bloomington
and
to
the
mall
more
than
42
million
annual
visitors,
believe
it
or
not,
and
this
redecorating
helps
us
to
drive
that
many
people
to
the
mall
and
will
help
us
increase
that
number.
Actually,
what
that
does
is,
as
we
do,
the
redecorating
we're
employing
hundreds
of
people
giving
them
work.
B
We
draw
in
new
stores
to
the
mall
as
well
and
as
they're
built
out
dozens
and
hundreds
of
people
are
employed
as
well,
and
the
economic
benefit
of
that
just
really
does
have
that
ripple
effect.
It
goes
out
beyond
the
mall,
it
touches
so
many
businesses
and
people
in
the
bloomington
area,
and
it
goes
even
beyond
that.
C
A
We
took
a
first-hand
look
at
the
changes
made
to
the
aquarium,
formerly
known
as
underwater
adventures
after
the
construction
wrapped
up.
The
aquarium
now
features
more
than
ten
thousand
animals.
Several
new
themed
tanks
and
multiple
interactive
exhibits
that
actually
encourage
people
to
get
their
hands
wet
sea
life
officials
also
say
the
renovations
put
more
of
an
educational
emphasis
on
the
displays
as
well.
C
This
is
our
quiz
trail.
This
is
the
second
question
of
our
nine
question
series
throughout
the
aquarium,
where
kids
and
parents
can
come
and
kind
of
figure
out
what
the
answer
is.
Some
of
these
answers
or
some
of
these
questions
we
have
the
answers
throughout
the
aquarium.
We
call
them
thin
facts
and
it's
a
really
cool
way
to
learn
and
kind
of
enhance
your
knowledge
here
at
the
aquarium.
So
you
not
only
can
touch
creatures
now,
when
you
see
them,
you
can
also
learn
a
lot
about
them
as
well.
A
A
D
We
sent
a
letter
just
to
basically
inform
the
kids
and
their
parents
or
families
that
we
know
that
those
get-togethers
are
going
on
and
we
wanted
the
encourage
the
parents
to
have
a
conversation
with
their
kids
about
underage
drinking.
We
also
want
to
let
them
know
that
the
bloomington
police
department
is
going
to
be
out
and
monitoring
this
throughout
the
city.
D
E
D
Things
that
go
along
with
underage
consumption
of
alcohol
and
driving
a
vehicle,
and
we
want
to
take
the
opportunity
in
this
letter
just
to
kind
of
bring
some
awareness
to
this
issue
in
the
springtime
when
we
know
that
there's
going
to
be
a
little
bit
more
outside
get-togethers
and,
like
I
said,
prom
and
and
soon
graduations,
and
so
just
bring
some
awareness
to
this
issue.
And
hopefully
the
parents
will
have
the
conversation
with
their
child
about
the
issue
as
well.
A
D
We
all
know
the
negative
effects
of
drinking
alcohol
and
driving
a
car,
and
just
the
the
general
judgment,
issues
that
come
with
underage
consumption
of
alcohol.
So
we
hope
that
the
parents
will
take
this
opportunity
before
prom
before
graduation,
just
to
reiterate
that
message
with
their
kids
that
there
should
be
no
drinking
and
certainly
no
drinking
when
they're
going
to
be
operating
a
more
vehicle
on
the
city
streets
or
anywhere
really
for
that
matter.
A
Bloomington
residents
are
encouraged
to
visit
the
city's
website,
where
you
can
find
chief
potts's
full
letter
to
the
public,
as
well
as
information
on
how
you
can
join
the
together.
We
stand
campaign
now
it's
time
for
a
short
break
when
we
return
we're
joined
by
city,
forester
and
assistant
maintenance,
superintendent,
paul
edwardson,
to
discuss
a
pest,
we
want
to
keep
away
from
our
trees
as
they
begin
to
bud
stay
with
us.
G
H
A
Good
thanks
for
being
here
today
well
spring
is
seems
to
be
finally
heading
back
leaves
on
the
trees.
Things
are
getting
greener
outside,
so
that's
a
good
time
to
get
into
some
emerald
ash
borer
reminders.
So
why
don't
you
kind
of
start
us
at
the
beginning
and
tell
us
a
little
bit
about
what
emerald
ash
borer
is.
E
Well
about
three
years
ago,
I
think
it
was
that
we
unfortunately
detected
the
emerald
ash
borer
in
minnesota.
It's
been
marching
its
way
west
from
the
detroit
area,
and
we
found
it
in
houston,
county
in
southeastern
minnesota
and
in
hennepin
and
ramsey
county
on
the
saint
paul
minneapolis
border,
a
fairly
isolated
area,
and
it's
it's
putting
all
of
the
900
plus
million
ash
trees
in
the
state
at
risk.
E
E
Try
to
do
the
best
we
can
to
hopefully
stretch
out
you
know
having
to
deal
with
this.
We
can't
stop
it
right
now,
but
I
think
we're
we're
managing
its
move
as
best
we
can
currently.
A
E
It's
an
insect
all
all
species
of
ash
trees
that
are
the
the
name
is
fraxenous
the
latin
name,
not
mountain
ash,
which
is
not
a
true
ash
tree.
It
has
ash
in
the
name,
but
it's
not
a
true
ash
tree,
but
green
ash
summit
ash
in
any
of
the
cultivars
of
the
ash
are
at
risk
for
it
and
it
is
a
an
emerald
ash
borer.
It's
a
bug.
That's
emerald,
green,
quite
small.
E
Only
about
a
half
an
inch
in
length
that
bores
into
the
tree
lays
eggs
and
then
those
eggs
turn
into
larva
and
the
larva
chew
and
feed
under
the
bark
in
the
tree
and
ultimately
choke
off
the
nutrients
to
the
tree
and
ultimately
kill
the
tree.
So
it's
it's
kind
of
a
it's
a
long
process.
It
doesn't
happen.
E
It's
different
than
dutch
elm
disease
in
dutch
elm
disease,
or
even
oak
wilt
one
month.
The
tree
can
look
completely
healthy
and
a
month
or
two
later
it
can
be
very
sick
and
and
on
its
way
to
dying
they
have
found.
They
think
the
emerald
ash
borer
in
the
trees
they
found
in
st
paul.
E
A
E
I'm
guessing
that
there
would
be
very
few
if
any
residents
that
could
could
tell
themselves
if
their
ash
tree
is
succumbing
to
emerald
ash
borer
and,
as
a
matter
of
fact,
even
our
state
certified
tree
inspectors
that
we
have
on
staff
here
with
bloomington.
E
It
is
very
difficult
to
to
determine
that
to
to
make
a
100
percent
determination
of
that
we
would
have
to
have
a
tree
that
showed
the
signs
of
the
emerald
ash
borer
decline
in
a
tree,
and
then
we
would
have
the
department
of
agriculture
come
in
and
actually
take
samples
of
the
tree.
That's
the
only
way
we
can
really
tell
the
one
thing
that
we're
finding
that
really
shows
up,
probably
is
the
most
visible
symptom
is
excessive.
E
Woodpecker
damage
on
the
tree
you'll
see
that
where
they
will
have
packed
the
whole
part
of
large
branches
or
even
the
trunk,
so
that
can
be
a
symptom
of
it
doesn't
mean
the
tree.
Has
it
because
woodpeckers
will
park
peck
on
any
trees?
Looking
for
insects
for
food,
even
trees,
that
aren't
diseased?
So
it's
it's
not
a
100
percent,
again
accurate
diagnosis
from
that,
but
it
gives
us
a
a
need,
then,
to
take
a
little
closer
look
at
it.
Okay,.
E
Well,
the
closest
threats
are
in
the
saint
anthony
park,
neighborhood
of
saint
paul
on
the
minneapolis-st
paul
border.
There's
a
and
I
don't
even
remember
exactly
how
how
big
it
is.
I
don't
know
if
it's
a
mile
square
mile
and
a
half
square
area
where
they've
concentrated
and
been
able
to
to
determine
they
have
emerald
ash
borer.
There
they've
been
working,
eliminating
the
trees
that
are
diseased
and
they've
even
done
some
cutting
down
of
ash
trees,
especially
ones.
I
think
that
are
in
poor
condition.
E
We
don't
have
it
here,
which
is
good.
We
tell
people
the
best
thing
they
can
do
to
help
prevent
it
is
to
keep
their
ash
trees
as
healthy
as
they
can.
In
other
words,
if
we
get
a
long
stretch
of
drought
during
the
summer
make
sure
that
trees,
no
matter
what
size
they
are,
get
supplemental
water,
there's
also
some
chemicals
that
trees
can
be
treated
with
that
they've
had
some
fairly
good
results
with
that
will
prevent
the
tree
from
succumbing
to
emerald
ash
borer
again,
there's
a
cost
to
that.
E
You
have
to
do
it
over
a
prolonged
period,
basically
over
the
life
of
the
tree.
If
you
want
to
guarantee
that
it's
going
to
work,
we
suggest
people
talk
to
a
contractor.
You
can
buy
some
chemicals
at
some
of
the
big
box
stores,
but
most
of
those
are
granular
or
drench
materials
that
you
would
place
on
the
ground
and
the
problem
with
those
is.
E
If
we
get
heavy
rains,
they're
prone
to
leaching
that
chemical
then
can
leach
into
other
areas
the
contractors
that
are
out
there
that
are
licensed
by
the
state
and
and
know
what
they're
doing
they
inject
the
insecticide
into
the
tree.
So
it's
not
on
the
ground.
It's
not
going
to
go
anywhere,
but
in
the
tree,
and
so
there've
been
some
good
luck
with
those.
So
you
know
people
can
call
a
reputable
contractor
and
and
talk
to
them
and
see
what
what
they
would
recommend.
A
E
E
The
biggest
challenge-
and
I
think
the
biggest
focus
that
both
the
department
of
agriculture
and
the
department
of
natural
resources
are
are
trying
to
put
their
resources
toward
is
the
movement
of
firewood
throughout
the
state,
hennepin
and
ramsey
county
are
what
we
call
quarantine
counties.
In
other
words,
firewood
cannot
move
no
matter
what
the
specie
other
than
conifer,
if
it's
pine
or
spruce
that
doesn't
matter
but
any
hardwood
any
ash
maple
oak.
Anything
in
firewood
type
condition,
which
means
it's
cut
in
length
shorter
than
four
feet,
cannot
move
outside
of
hennepin
and
ramsey
county.
E
Unless
you
get
a
permit
from
the
department
of
agriculture,
that
is
what
we're
believing
and
what
we've
seen
is
the
biggest
way
that
this
is
getting
spread.
It
came
from
the
milwaukee
area,
all
the
way
to
western
wisconsin
and
eastern
minnesota,
and
the
bug
didn't
go
that
far.
It
hitchhiked
on
most
likely
firewood.
E
That's
what
they're,
believing
and
so
we're
trying
to
make
sure
that
you
know
if
people
cut
down
trees
in
their
yards
here
in
bloomington
in
their
hardwood,
they
can't
haul
that
to
their
cabin
outside
of
of
hennepin
and
ramsey
and
not
be
in
violation
of
of
state
law
right
now.
So
it's
it's
something
that
we
have
that
information
on
our
web
page.
We
have
the
links
to
those
web
pages
for
the
department
of
agriculture.
So
if
people
have
questions
they
can
certainly
call
us-
or
they
can.
E
You
know,
go
on
our
web
page
and
and
click
on
one
of
those
links
to
get.
You
know
more
detailed
information,
great.
A
Well,
we'd
like
to
thank
city,
forester
and
assistant
maintenance,
superintendent,
paul
edwardson
for
being
here
today
and
again,
if
you'd,
like
more
information
on
emerald
ash
borer,
please
visit
the
city's
website.
It's
time
for
a
short
break,
stay
with
us.

residents
are
invited
to
bring
their
own

or
pick
up
a

At
the
event,
a
change
in
city
ordinance
governing
the
products
found
behind
the
counters
inside
bloomington
tobacco
shops
has
been
passed
by
the
city
council.
I
On
the
market
now
are
products
that
look
a
lot
like
mints
and
breath
strips.
They
are
nicotine
delivery
devices
or
nicotine
products
and
again
the
idea
or
the
fear
here
is
that
they
they're
too
easily
accessible
to
kids.
If
they're
out
on
the
shelves,
all
tobacco
products
need
to
be
behind
the
counter
they
need
to
be
sold.
You
buy
a
cashier
who
ids
you
and
make
sure
you
have
age
to
buy
that
product,
and
now
these
products
need
to
be
sold
only
at
licensed
establishments.
I
The
thought
process
is
again
it
it's
not
as
easy
for
a
minor
to
get
a
hold
of
this
in
the
store
again
what
people
need
to
watch
out
for
if
they
they
buy.
These
products
is
be
aware.
They
do
look
a
lot
like
mints
and
gums
and
candies
in
your
purse,
and
be
aware
of
that.
If
you
have
children
in
your
household.
