Description
On this episode of Bloomington Today, we'll take a look at the proper way to maneuver a three-lane roadway, we'll also check back on Harrison Park, one of Bloomington's community gardens, currently in its full-growing glory.
A
Welcome
to
Bloomington
today,
I'm
Caitlin,
real
thanks
for
joining
us
Minnesota
in
the
summer
may
often
seem
like
the
land
of
construction,
and
one
specific
type
of
roadway
is
popping
up
more
frequently
all
over
the
Metro
three
land
roadways
are
being
constructed
more
and
more
often
in
residential
areas.
A
three.
B
A
B
Primary
problem
with
vehicles
parking
along
the
curb
on
a
three
lane
roadway
as
they
block
either
partially
or
fully
the
through
traveled
lane
forcing
cars
into
the
two-way
left
turn
lane
to
get
around
them.
There's
also
a
number
of
other
issues
that
can
arise
if
there's
bike
lanes
they're
blocking
the
bike
lanes
as
well,
so
bicyclists
using
the
road
have
to
move
around
into
the
travel
lane
and
into
the
two-way
left
turn
lane
to
get
around
them.
They
can
also
do
things
like
block
sight,
distance
at
driveways
and
adjacent
streets.
B
Lane
roads
have
a
number
of
built-in
advantages
over
there
for
lane
counterparts.
They
do
increase
safety,
they
open
up
the
road
to
other
users,
but
that
assumes
that
people
are
using
them
in
the
proper
manner.
So
we
want
to
get
the
word
out.
Let
people
know
how
they're
supposed
to
be
using
these
roads.
What
the
advantages
are
so
that
we
can
keep
everybody
safe.
If
you.

Extending

not
only
saves
money,
it
improves

A
You
need
to
know
a
new
Bloomington
festival
is
gearing
up
for
their
second
annual
celebration,
designed
to
promote
a
stronger,
more
united
community
gather
up
the

out
to
bloomington's

Heritage.
A
A
C
Definitely
a
family
event,
there's
stuff
for
mature
adults,
the
arts
and
arts
and
crafts
part.
The
car
show
there's
stuff
for
little
kids,
we
have
all
the
kids
games
and
the
inflatables,
and
then
we
also
have
a
beefed-up
teen
area
where
we
have
our
three

three
basketball.
We
have
a
talent,
show,
DJ
dancers,
speech,
presentations
and
empire.
Beauty
is
out
there
going
to
be
giving
makeovers
Bloomington.
A
Heritage
days
is
a
great
way
to
get
outdoors
and
mingle
with
your
neighbors,
and
there
really
is
something
for
people
of
all
ages
for
complete
schedule
of
the
events
or
to
find
out
about

museums
aren't
typically
a
place
where
kids
can
explore

Kids
museum.
Isn't
your
typical
exhibit
welcome
to
the
works,
a
hands-on
minds
on
museum
that
makes
learning
fun
and
interesting
what.
E
A
E
Thrilled
to
be
moving
to
Bloomington,
we
are
thrilled
to
finally
have
the
space
that
we
need
to
do
our
programs.
We
have
not
one
inch
of
extra
space
that
are
you
Dinah
site
here,
so
we're
thrilled
to
have
four
times
more
space,
to
do
many
more
programs,
more
space
for
exhibits,
more
space
for
classrooms
for
field
trips,
for
camps
and
classes,
more
things
more
space
for
kids
to
really
explore
how
things
work.
The.
A
Works
has
several
exhibits
that
essentially
bring
technology
to
life
for
young
people.
Gears
and
gizmos
invites
kids
to
explore
how
gears
pulleys,
cams
and
other
simple
machines
work.
The
build
area
features
a
variety
of
bricks
and
blocks
in
many
shapes
and
sizes
that
allow
kids
to
use
their
imaginations
and
construct
something.
Finally,
the
interactive
image
exhibits
features
things
like
color
mixing
and
laser
recognition
tool
like
this
harp
with
no
strings.
E
At
the
new
location,
many
of
our
classic
exhibits
will
be
coming
along
with
us.
We'll
also
be
adding
new
exhibits
to
the
mix
and
then
we'll
have
an
area
of
traveling
exhibits
that
will
always
be
changing
so
about
every
six
months.
There'll
be
something
new
to
explore,
but
the
most
exciting
part
about
the
new
works
is
our
design
lab,
which
is
a
step
beyond
just
exhibits.
It's
where
you
can
go
and
you
can
build
and
design.
You
could
create
a
catapult
and
launch
a
marshmallow.
You
can
make
your
own
flashlight,
you
can
play
with
circuits.
A
F
G
Started
with
the
motor
the
wires
on
to
the
power
source,
the
battery
and
they're
now
creating
they
finish
the
switch
and
and
when
they're
done
they'll
be
hooked.
Connecting
this
circuit
on
to
they'll
get
a
propeller
and
the
whole
works
goes
on
to
pieces
of
foam.
It
becomes
a
swamp
skimmer
so
that
when
this
turns
we
hook
up
the
this
becomes
a
switch
and
the
propeller
turns
it
skims
across
service.
A
E
Reason
we
have
the
exhibits
we
do
is
to
really
have
kids
appreciate
and
have
an
affinity
for
math
and
science
and
engineering
getting
them
excited
about
these
topics.
So
in
the
future
they
can
be
educated
and
have
an
interest
in
going
into
fields
like
this,
and
it's
really
important
that
you
reach
them
young
before
they
start
thinking.
Oh
I'm,
not
good
at
math
or
I'm,
not
good
at
science.
Here
at
the
works,
everyone
succeeds.
A
A
What,
if
bloomington's
police
officers
is
being
praised
for
his
phenomenal
work
in
keeping
Bloomington
streets
safe
against
motorists
who
drive
under
the
influence
officer,
Joe
spark
was
recognized
by
the
Minnesota
Department
of
Public
Safety
as
one
of
16
law
enforcement
officials
in
the
Twin
Cities
to
be
named
a
DWI
all-star.
This
comes
from
his
2010
driving,
while
intoxicated
arrests
at
a
twins
game
back
in
July.
The
group
of
officers
from
both
out
state
Minnesota
and
the
twin
cities
were
honored
for
their
outstanding
public
safety
work.
A
While
officer
spark
was
unable
to
attend
the
ceremony,
he
is
proud
of
his
53
DWI
arrests,
made
last
year,
we'd
like
to
extend
a
congratulations
to
officer
spark
as
well
as
a
big
thank
you
for
helping
keep
our
streets
safe.
It's
now
time
for
a
short
break.
When
we
come
back
we'll
be
joined
by
Melissa
Seeley
from
senior
community
services
to
share
with
us
one
form
of
social
media
geared
toward
the
elderly
population
stay
with
us.
So.
H
H
This
time,
I'm
gonna,
do
it
I'm
going
to
actually
go
to
school.
Tell
me
about
some
of
the
stuff
you've
had
to
deal
with.
I
just
dropped
out
completely
I
just
got
caught
up
in
it.
The
whole
scene
with
the
alcohol
and
the
drugs
I
was
arrested
a
lot
of
my
friends.
They
were
really
concerned,
especially
my
friend
Aaron.
You
just
have
to
find
someone.
They
don't
have
to
tell
you
advice.
I,
don't
have
to
do
that.
They
just
listen.
Give.
A
A
K
I
K
Have
programs
such
as
senior
outreach,
which
is
social
workers,
Medicare
health
insurance,
counseling,
the
home
program,
which
stands
for
household
and
outside
maintenance
for
the
elderly?
It's
a
chore
program
that
does
lawn
care.
The
snow
removal
home
making
things
like
that,
and
then
they
are
also
staff
at
some
senior
centers
at
SES
has
as
well
so
connection
is
something
new.
That's
started
in
july,
but
SCS
has
been
around
in
bloomington
for
quite
a
while.
Okay.
A
K
K
A
K
When
you
go
to
care,
nections,
org,
you'll,
see
a
home
page
and
from
that
home
page,
you
can
select
what
community
you
want
to
look
through.
So,
for
example,
you
click
on
Bloomington
and
you
get
a
Bloomington
specific
site,
so
you're
not
going
through
the
phone
book
calling
all
these
different
places
just
to
see
if
they
serve
the
community
that
you
weren't,
hoping
okay.
A
K
Yes,
it's
very
exciting
that
you
can
create
your
own
care
team,
so
either
the
senior
themselves,
the
loved
one
or
the
primary
caregiver
can
create
this
care
team.
It
can
be
family
members,
aunts,
uncles
grandchildren,
neighbors,
a
parish
nurse,
a
social
worker,
anyone
that
they
want
on
this
care
team
to
help
that
primary
caregiver,
coordinate.
Okay
mom
needs
to
go
to
a
doctor's
appointment
Friday
who
can
take
her
so
that
really
helps
that
primary
caregiver.
And
the
neat
thing
too
is
those
who
sign
up
for
their
care
team.
K
They
can
select
what
services
they
want
to
help
with.
So
if
they
want
to
help
with
transportation
if
they
want
to
help
with
meals,
that's
something
that
they
will
know
that
as
soon
as
a
task
opens
up
for
that
they'll
be
able
to
jump
right
in
and
help.
So
it's
really
unique,
and
it's
really
great
for
that
caregiver.
So.
A
A
K
Right
there
are
a
couple
really
unique
things
about
connection.
There
is
actually
a
category
with
diseases
and
conditions,
and
that's
something
that
specifically
say
I'm
for
someone
who
has
ms,
that
will
let
the
caregiver
know
all
about
that,
and
also
what
support
groups
are
specifically
for
that.
What
type
of
caregiving
is
needed
for
something
like
that?
So
that's
something
really
unique
and
it's
also
something
to
wear
caregivers
can
find
their
own
support
groups.
K
That's
really
big
to
to
give
that
caregiver
kind
of
a
sunset
they're,
not
alone
in
this,
and
that
there
are
support
groups
out
there
for
them,
along
with
the
loved
one
supplying
services
such
as
meals
to
be
delivered
to
them,
or
do
they
need
groceries,
just
delivered
to
them.
What
transportations
are
out
there
for
them?
So
it's
a
wide
variety
of
things
that
they
can
easily
find,
and
it's.
A
A

yeah,

Oh

let's
go

A
Welcome
back
everyone,
while
summer,
maybe
neri
its
official
end,
the
city's
community
gardens
are
at
their
best
right
now.
At
a
recent

out
at
harrison
park
where
28
of
the
city's
84
garden
plots
are
located,
produce
and
flowers
were
abundant.
There
was
no
shortage
of
tomatoes,
squash
corn,
even
pumpkins
after
the
recent
exceedingly
hot
temperatures,
the
flowers
at
harrison
park
are
still
bright
and
beautiful
community
gardens
offer
a
great
way
to
garden.
A
If
you
dont
have
space
at
home
or
to
try
out
the
activity
before
committing
to
a
garden
in
your
yard,
it
also
allows
gardeners
to
get

some
exercise
and
meet
other
like-minded
gardeners.

Medication

is
becoming
an
increasingly
common
problem,
as
specially
among
teens
and
young
children
who
often
access
these
medications
from

friends
and
their

A
A
O
P
P
As
in
the
fire
inspectors,
I
think
what
I
really
enjoy
the
most
is
every
day
is
different.
You
know,
there
may
be
days
were
all
be
doing
a
hotel
inspection
or
maybe
inside
the
schools
and
doing
at
school
inspection,
or
there
may
be
days
that
I'll
be
out
doing
a
fire
call
follow-up,
something
maybe
there's
an
instant
that
happened
at
a
at
out
apartment
building,
where
they
need
a
fire
inspector,
the
firm
emotional
division
to
go
out
there
and
do
a
follow-up
and
then
also
we
do
a
lot
of
fire
investigations
as
well.
P
So
everything
you
just
never
know
what's
going
to
come
there
you
know
each
day
is
a
little
different.
That's
what
I
really
enjoy
well
as
a
fire
inspector
I
work
full-time
for
the
city,
the
through
the
fire
prevention
division
and
we
work.
You
know
basic
40
hours.
If
we
get
called
out
for
fire
investigations,
then
you
know,
obviously
that
would
increase
and
that's
usually
after
hours,
although
sometimes
we
do
get
fired
bit.
Investigations
do
during
our
normal
work
hours.
The.
O
P
Wanted
to
start
my
part,
rear
and
the
wildland
firefighting
aspect
of
it
so
I
started.
You
know
working
part-time
for
for
the
Minnesota
DNR
and
that
really
piqued
my
interest
in
trying
to
get
into
something
more
of
the
structure
side
of
it.
So
that's
when
I
kind
of
moved
to
Bloomington
and
I
joined
there
for
joining
their
fire
department
and
really
what
I
wanted
to
do
is
just
kind
of
make
a
difference
and
help.
Folks
and
you
know,
help
people
in
my
community.
That's
kind
of
what
drove
me
to
this
path.
If
you.
P
Not
go
back
in
for
any
reason
whatsoever.
You
know
if
you
have
pets
in
there
or
if
you
have
something
else
that
you
need
that
you
want
out.
I
talked
to
the
first
arriving
fire
chief
or
firefighter,
and
let
them
know
and
then
that's
our
job
will
go
and
take
care
of
that.
But
once
you
get
out
stay
out
call
911
Kaiser.
O
P
As
far
as
fire-prevention
the
home,
the
number
one
accidental
cause
of
fires
that
we're
seeing
is
cooking
related
and
the
reason
that
happens
is
unattended
cooking.
So
the
best
way
to
prevent
that
type
of
fire
from
happiness
stay
in
the
kitchen.
You
know
keep
your
cooking
oil
or
your
food
slowly,
don't
turn
it
up
all
the
way
to
the
high
levels
of
heat.
O
Reason
Chris
was
a
white
helmet
in
addition
to
a
standard
red
helmet
is
because
he
is
part
of
a
chief
seven
program,
a
program
that
takes
six
different
captains
from
six
different
stations
and
puts
them
in
a
chief
squad.
This
allows
them
to
respond
to
incidents
as
Chiefs
and
gain
experience
in
making
command
decisions.
I
then
asked
Chris
to
describe
a
project
or
program
that
he
was
currently
involved
in
well.
P
Well,
when
I
have
free
time,
which
seems
to
be
few
and
far
between
between
work
and
fire
department-
and
you
know-
I
also
go
to
school-
I-
try
to
spend
it
outdoors
and
I
like
to
do
the
hunting
of
fishing
I
really
got
back
into
dock
honey.
A
lot
because
I
do
have
a
dog
and
he
seems
to
enjoy
it
as
much
as
I'd
use.
So.
A
