Description
On this week's episode of Bloomington Today, we'll check another activity off our To-Do List, as we try out canoeing on Bush Lake. We'll also check in on construction progress of the Radisson Blu hotel attached to the Mall of America, and take a tour of a finished room.
A
Welcome
to
Bloomington
today,
I'm
Caitlin
real
thanks
for
joining
us
now,
it's
time
for
another
do
town
to
do
list
segment.
It's
during
this
time
we
venture
out
into
the
city
to
find
new
and
different
ways
for
residents
to
keep
a
healthy
mind
and
body
in
Bloomington.
Today,
we'll
check
canoeing
off
our
to-do
list.
Take
a
look
when
you
see
a
canoe
or
kayak
cutting
smoothly
across
the
surface
of
a
lake
or
river.
A
It's
easy
to
wonder
if
the
sport
might
be
something
that
suits
your
lifestyle,
both
canoeing
and
kayaking
involved
paddling
a
small
craft
through
water.
A
bush
lake
is
a
prime
spot
to
try
out
this
sport.
Just
ask
Bloomington
resident
dr.
Jamie
Peters,
who
stores
both
a
canoe
and
kayak
in
the
city's
racks
each
summer.
I
think.
B
There's
a
lot
of
things
that
make
it
ideal
number
one
is
that
it's
gorgeous
I
mean
there's
beautiful
hills
around
Bush
lake
there's
very
natural
areas
where
there's
no
houses
and
you
can
use
your
imagination,
feel
like
you're
in
the
middle
of
North
Country
somewhere.
Number
two:
is
that
there's
some
interest
to
it?
So
it's
not
just
a
round
lake.
You
have
basically
a
large
l
and
so
you're,
not
just
canoeing
around
circles,
while.
A
B
Can
be
very
versatile,
you
can
carry
heavy
weights,
you
can
do
trips
on
it,
so
you
can
do
overnight.
So
it's
it's
versatile
in
that
way.
It's
much
better
with
two
people
than
one
person
so
akai,
especially
a
single
person
k,
which
is
the
majority
of
kayaks,
is
much
more
stable
with
one
person
jamie.
A
Has
been
canoeing
since
the
age
of
nine
and
took
up
kayaking
about
15
years
ago,
and
while
he
enjoys
both
today,
he'll
be
teaching
me
the
basics
of
canoeing.
First,
we
work
together
to
transport
the
boat
from
the
storage
rack
to
the
water's
edge
before
we
even
hit
the
water
I'd
like
to
learn
a
bit
about
each
person's
role
in
the
boat.
The
person
in
the
front
and
the
person
of
the
back
do
different
things.
Correct,
correct.
B
The
person
in
the
back
is
actually
responsible
for
during
and
the
direction
of
both,
so
you
want
to
make
sure
that
that
that's
understood
and
there's
compatibility
personality-wise.
Sometimes
that
could
be
a
problem
with
my
wife
in
the
front.
But
that's
you
know
we
work
that
through
and
when
you
look
at
the
boat
you
could
it's
not
completely
symmetric
so
that
the
boat
itself,
the
bow,
which
is
the
front
the
seat,
is
further
back
then
the
stirrer,
which
is
closer
to
the
point,
the
back
end
of
the
boat
after.
A
B
A
B
First
is
the
forward
stroke
and
that's
what
both
the
person
about
a
person
the
stern
would
use
and
that's
what
they
hand
up
here
you
catch
or
get
the
blade.
That's
this
part
in
the
water
pull
back
through
then
bring
your
arm
around
and
again
pull
back
through
bring
your
arm
around.
So
it's
a
very
simple
stroke
and
it
should
be
very
easy
on
your
arms
and
shoulders.
You
also
would
want
to
be
able
to
reverse
that
and
go
use
the
other
side
and
usually
the
person.
B
The
ball
would
be
paddling
on
the
opposite
side
from
the
person
in
the
stern.
So
that
again
is
communication.
Another
stroke,
that's
very
important
is,
if
you
just
use
the
forward
stroke,
the
bow
will
normally
turn
the
opposite
side
where
your
paddle
is
on.
So
the
stern
person
has
to
master
something
called
J
stroke
and
a
jay
stroke
starts
like
a
forward.
Stroke
then
forms
on
the
right
side
forms
the
letter
J.
B
So
as
you
pull
back
right
when
it
gets
past,
you
you
push
out
that
way
and
that
forces
the
bow
back
again
in
the
proper
direction
and
the
draw
stroke
is
the
reverse
of
the
J.
So
if
the
ball
person
wants
to
help
that
pointing
part
as
and
get
that
and
make
it
easier
on
the
stern
person,
it's
the
opposite
of
a
J,
they
start
from
outside,
pull
inside
then
pull
straight
back
now.
A
That
I've
got
the
concept
down,
I
think
I'm,
ready
to
help
launch
the
canoe
and
joining
us
on
the
trip
around
bush
lake
is
Jamie's,
80-pound,
German,
Shepherd
or
so
proving
that
canoeing
can
be
fun
for
all
members
of
the
family
when
entering
a
canoe
make
sure
you
wear
a
properly
fitted
life
vest
and
step
into
the
middle
of
the
boat.
Once
we've
settled
in
we're
off,
it's.
A
B
Should
do
what
they
enjoy
and
they
should
do
it
a
lot
and
I
think
canoeing
is
just
using
different
muscles
and
that's
all
about
cross-training.
We
encourage
all
of
our
patients
entire
population
to
cross-train.
That's
a
way
to
keep
your
muscles
balanced,
not
overused
ones
and
not
use
others,
and
canoeing
is
great
not
only
for
the
shoulders
and
for
the
arms,
but
as
you
twist
and
turn
with
canoeing
or
kayaking,
it
really
strengthens
those
abdominal
muscles.
Even
the
hip
muscles,
especially
with
Chi
a
key
after.
A
A
A
Today,
where
we'll
recap,
some
of
our
favorite
to-do
list
stories
and
when
you're
finding
ways
to
stay
active
in
Bloomington,
you
should
also
be
thinking
of
ways
to
eat
healthier,
which
is
why
we're
pleased
to
announce
its
back
I'm
talking
about
the
Bloomington
farmers
market,
starting
on
Saturday
jun,
9th
this
weekly
gathering
it
takes
place
in
the
east
parking
lot
of
Bloomington
Civic
Plaza
every
saturday
until
October
running
from
eight
a.m.
to
1pm.
A
Here,
local
farmers
and
growers
sell
their
own
products
directly
to
the
public,
allowing
consumers
to
have
a
direct
and
unique
interaction
with
the
person
growing
their
food
Bloomington's
farmers
market
is
more
than
just
fresh
fruits
and
veggies
you
can
find
fresh
cut,
flowers
varies
baked
goods
and
more
and
this
year,
attendees
can
expect
to
encounter
some
positive
changes
to
the
market.
You.
C
Know,
there's
some
really
great
changes
coming
to
the
farmers
market
this
year,
we're
going
to
going
to
expand
the
market.
There's
going
to
be
several
new
vendors
we
have
wigs
and
purrs
is
going
to
be
selling
cat,
treats
catnip
toys
dog,
treats.
We
have
a
new
pizza
vendor
I
love
pizza.
Doesn't
everybody
love
pizza,
though
right
so
that'll
be
great
and
we're
also
going
to
have
a
new
seating
area
where
people
can
sit
down
and
rest
we're
going
to
have
some
cafe
tables
and
chairs
set
out.
C
Weren't
watching
for
cars,
cars
weren't
necessarily
yielding
properly.
So
what
we've
done
this
year
is:
we've
eliminated
all
parking
on
the
on
the
east
side
of
civic
plaza
where
the
farmers
market
takes
place,
we'll
have
additional
handicap
parking
on
the
side
of
northwest
corner,
but
then
this
will
be
entirely
pedestrian
friendly
area
it'll
be
great
park
like
setting,
and
it
really
should
enhance
the
whole
market
experience
without
vehicles.
Many.
A
Of
the
Saturday
farmers
markets
at
Civic,
Plaza
will
include
entertainment
for
the
entire
family,
also
bring
your
EBT
or
credit
card
to
use
at
the
market.
Free
of
fees
you'll
receive
tokens
in
exchange
for
card
transactions.
Hope
to
see
you
all
at
the
market.
Every
saturday
now
we'll
head
over
to
the
city's
South
Loop
district.
This
week's
in
the
loop
segment
focuses
on
construction
around
the
mall
of
america
and
if
you've
been
near
the
malls
south
side,
lately
you'll
definitely
have
noticed
the
tremendous
progress
made
on
the
radisson
blu
hotel
project.
A
We
spoke
with
the
mortenson
construction
project
manager
recently,
who
led
us
in
the
construction
status
of
the
500
room
luxury
hotel.
The
majority
of
the
exterior
paneling
has
been
installed
with
the
gray
graphite
tiles
that
will
make
up
the
outside
of
the
hotel.
The
orange
strip
still
visible
is
water
sealing
that
will
soon
be
covered
with
some
black
and
some
multicolored
panels.
The
large
mall
of
america
sign
was
taken
down
in
late
April
and
the
Skyway
is
now
fully
connected
from
the
hotel
to
the
mall
south
side.
A
Many
of
the
crew
members
have
taken
their
work
inside
and
sheetrock
walls
are
up
dividing
rooms
and
hallways
up
to
level
9
of
the
13
story.
We
got
to
peek
into
a
model
room
currently
under
construction.
To
get
an
idea
of
what
the
room
styles
will
look
like.
The
custom
design,
guest
rooms
will
feature
three
distinctive
radisson
room
styles,
including
New,
York,
mansion,
naturally,
cool
and
urban
rooms.
This
model
room
was
a
demonstration
of
one
of
the
350
urban
rooms.
Mortensen
says
the
room
is
about.
A
Radisson
blu
hotel
is
on
track
to
open
in
March
of
2013
and
according
to
city
staff,
once
the
Radisson
Blu
Hotel
open
its
doors,
the
number
of
hotel
rooms
in
Bloomington
will
swell
beyond
8,000
and,
as
the
radisson
blu
will
have
a
direct
connection
to
the
mall,
it's
sure
to
be
a
front-runner
in
the
hospitality
industry
and
staying
in
the
loop.
It's
obvious
that
structures
are
going
up
on
the
mall
south
side,
while
crews
are
busy
taking
buildings
down
on
the
east
side
of
the
mall
of
america.
A
D
Its
of
the
connection
of
the
Mall
of
America
face
to
expansion,
along
with
the
bloomington
central
station,
which
is,
at
the
other
end
of
the
lyndale
link,
and
so
by
taking
down
those
four
buildings,
will
be
able
to
extend
lindau
and
make
a
better
connection
between
those
two
major
projects
in
the
south
loop
district.
Currently.
A
D
A
Told
us
in
early
June
buildings,
one
is
down
completely
and
the
footings
and
foundations
are
being
removed.
One
wall
of
building
two
has
been
left
standing
to
keep
high
winds
from
scattering
debris
around
the
area.
The
removal
of
building
three
and
four
is
expected
to
begin
soon.
Building
five
will
remain
for
now,
we'll.
D
Be
extending
it
in
a
various
stages,
so
we'll
have
both
construction
project
in
2013
and
in
2014
will
also
be
having
what
we
call
streetscape,
which
is
like
the
sidewalk
sandal
light
poles
and
the
things
behind
the
curb
and
gutter.
So
we'll
have
a
bid
package
for
that.
Also
in
that
time
frame.
If
you'd.
A
Like
to
learn
more
about
the
lyndale
link
project
visit,
the
city's
website
from
the
home
page
you'll
see
a
self
loop
icon
on
the
right
side.
There
you'll
find
details
on
this
project
and
others
happening
in
and
around
the
district
members
of
the
Bloomington
Police
Department
used
both
indoor
and
outdoor
shooting
ranges
for
practice,
education
and
state
qualifying
exams.
A
City
officials
would
like
to
alert
the
public
that,
on
june,
thirteenth
and
fourteenth
Bloomington
police
will
be
using
the
outdoor
range
at
the
city's
western
maintenance
facility
located
off
of
Hampshire
Avenue
at
the
June
trainings.
Swat
tactics
will
be
on
the
agenda.
Drills
and
procedures
like
this
state
test
that
we
filmed
back
in
august
of
2011
are
necessary
components
to
advancing
the
skills
of
officers
and,
ultimately,
keeping
the
public
safe
and
the
police
team
as
well.
Bloomington's
outdoor
range
is
beneficial
for
so
much
more
than
just
target
practice.
One.
E
Of
the
good
things
about
this
facility
is
that
it
allows
us
to
introduce
some
things
that
we
can't
do
at
the
indoor
range.
In
this
particular
case,
we
introduce
some
movement,
and
some
physical
stress
on
people
can
always
replicate
the
mental
stress.
But
we
can
do
something
similar
with
physical
stress.
So
by
stressing
physically
stressing
the
officers
a
little
bit
and
introducing
some
movement,
it
really
challenges
and
improves
their
skills,
and
while.
A
A
Officials
ask
that
residents
bear
with
them
and
plan
their
schedules
accordingly,
if
their
work
at
the
range
may
disrupt
people's
daily
activities
to
stay
informed
about
when
the
outdoor
range
will
be
in
use,
sign
up
for
police
alerts
through
e
subscribe.
That
way,
you'll
always
be
in
the
loop
about
what's
happening
with
the
Bloomington
Police
Department,
and
it's
now
time
for
a
short
break.
A
Welcome
back
everyone:
we
are
now
pleased
to
be
joined
by
the
city's
water
resources.
Specialist
Brian
greet
all
welcome
to
the
show
Thanks.
Well,
the
city's
engineering
division
recently
made
some
partnerships
and
applied
for
and
ultimately
received
a
grant
in
the
amount
of
two
hundred
and
thirty-five
thousand
dollars.
First,
why
don't
you
tell
us
a
bit
about
the
partnership
and
then
the
grant
that
the
city
received
well.
A
G
Yet
you
know
it
was
fairly
competitive.
The
board
of
water
and
soil
resources
received
about
250
applicants
for
about
close
to
50
million
dollars
worth
of
projects.
The
green
streets
for
blue
waters
project
is
a
collaborative
effort
between
agencies
to
install
curb,
cut
rain,
gardens
and
other
stormwater
best
management
practice
that
best
management
practices
to
help
reduce
sediments
and
other
pollutants
from
reaching
the
Minnesota
River.
Okay,.
A
G
Project
area
is
bounded
by
a
hundred
and
second
street
to
the
north
lyndale
avenue
to
the
west
and
the
minnesota
river
to
the
south
and
east,
and
that
area
is
primarily
a
residential
area
and
it
drains
to
the
Minnesota
Valley
Wildlife
Refuge,
which
is
a
critical
habitat
area
here
in
the
Twin
Cities.
Okay,.
A
G
D
G
Garden
is
a
great
way
for
property
owners
to
reduce
the
amount
of
runoff
flowing
from
their
property
by
capturing
the
polluted
water
and
allowing
it
to
infiltrate
into
the
ground.
We've
basically
mimic
natural
processes
by
filtering
it
underground,
and
it's
also
a
great
way
to
beautify
properties
and
increase
the
aesthetic
value
of
our
community
and
our
neighborhoods
really.
A
G
A
green
street
is
a
street
that
uses
vegetated
facilities
to
help
manage
the
stormwater
runoff.
So
when
it
rains
outside
the
water
that
runs
off,
the
adjacent
properties
and
streets
is
referred
to
as
stormwater
and
in
order
to
better
manage
the
runoff,
we
treat
it
through
these
vegetative
processes
that
are
that
are
nearby
and
so
their
sustainable
stormwater
practices
that
help
us
meet
different
compliance
requirements
and
different
resource
protection
goals,
and
we
use
the
natural
systems
to
help
manage
the
stormwater.
G
A
Very
important
what
what
kind
of
a
timeline
are
we
looking
at
for
this
project
so.
G
The
bulk
of
the
design
work
will
be
taken
care
of
over
the
course
of
this
year,
we'll
be
looking
to
install
a
few
rain
gardens
on
a
smaller
scale.
Here
this
fall
planting
typically
happens,
works
better
in
the
fall
rather
than
trying
to
plant
during
the
heat
of
the
summer
season.
So
that
means
the
bulk
of
the
construction
that
is
going
to
take
place
in
2013
and
then
we're
going
to
have
a
follow-up
community
maintenance
event
and
education
in
2014
he's.
A
G
A
H
A
J
Days
is
a
celebration
of
Bloomington:
it's
a
celebration
of
its
people,
its
history,
its
businesses
and
business
community,
its
schools,
its
student
groups,
its
families
and
its
neighborhoods.
It's
the
whole
design
behind
heritage
days
is
to
just
to
celebrate
the
great
elements
of
this
community
and
to
bring
its
community
together
on
an
annual
basis.

Biggest
new
part
of

Designed
to
not
only
rally
the
community
and
sort
of
indicate
a
sense
of
ownership
over
the
festival
that
you've
taken
an
endorsement
by
people
that
you
believe
in
the
cause.
But
it's
also
designed
to
be
a
fundraiser
for
nonprofit
organizations
and
for
anyone
out
selling
that
you
might
bump
into
selling
the
button
they're
representing
another
nonprofit
organization
in
the
community
as
well
as
heritage
days.
So
when
you
buy
the
button
you're
contributing
to
to
good
causes,
not
just
one
and
you're,
just
showing
your
support
and
promoting
the
event
itself
for.
