Description
The City of Bloomington and the Housing and Redevelopment Authority hosted the 10th Home Improvement Fair on Saturday, February 25, 2012. Fairgoers attended how-to seminars, visited with home improvement exhibitors, asked questions and got ideas for upcoming remodeling projects.
A
Reconditioning
windows
is
not
something
that
we're
doing
brand-new
for
the
first
time.
We've
been
doing
this
since
the
1940s.
It
involves
taking
your
old
window
and,
in
some
cases,
completely
redoing
the
window
down
to
the
original
wood
and
bringing
it
back
up
to
a
like-new
condition,
there's
other
things
that
can
also
be
done.
You
know,
when
you
look
at
how
a
window
system
works
inside
your
house,
you
find
out
that
you
know
most
of
what
happens
to
a
window
that
causes
you
to
think
about.
Getting
rid
of,
it
is
you're.
A
Losing
energy
or
the
window
looks
bad
and
you
just
feel
you
need
a
new
one.
The
way
that
windows
obviously
lose
energy
is
through
air
infiltration
transmission
of
radiation.
Those
are
pretty
common
things
air
leakage,
that's
the
infiltration,
exfiltration
portion
of
window
energy
loss.
That's
the
air
that
literally
blows
right
by
your
window,
they're
drafty.
They
have
to
operate
up
and
down
or
side
to
side,
so
they
can't
fit
completely
tight.
A
The
transmission-
that's
the
heat
that
literally
goes
through
the
glass
from
inside
the
house
to
outside,
through
convection
the
cooling
of
the
glass
service
outside
or
in
the
summertime.
The
cooling
energy
loss
due
to
be
glass
heating
up
the
cool
air
inside
pretty
simple
basic
things:
radiation.
That's
a
good
thing
in
the
summer
in
the
wintertime.
That's
the
warm
light
coming
in
through
the
window
that
our
dogs
and
cats
like
to
lay
on
the
floor
in
front
of
it
makes
them
feel
more
comfortable.
So
you
know
we're
getting
some
passive
solar
game.
A
However,
it's
not
really
a
whole
bunch
and
when
we
want
to
do
something
to
change
that
and
make
our
window
work
better,
we
can
deal
with
many
of
those
items.
We
can
certainly
deal
with
the
heat
loss
through
air
x,
filtration
and
infiltration,
and
I'll
use
this
little
model
here
to
show
one
exam
of
how
we
do
that.
A
Your
existing
window
might
look
like
this
with
a
rope
and
pulley
system
in
it
or
it
may
have
metal
slides
on
the
side.
If
your
windows
go
up
and
down
right
now,
okay,
you
might
have
metal
slides.
So
you
might
have
rope
and
pulley
like
this.
If
you
do
it,
we
can
eliminate
those
and
change
it
out
to
a
system.
Like
you
see
here
where
you
have
a
new
balance
system,
but
the
existing
sash
stays
the
same
way.
We
do.
That
is
we
remove
the
weight.
A
So
if
you
haven't
from
the
cavity
we
back
that
area.
In
other
words,
we
fill
it
with
instil
insulation.
If
you
don't
have
weights
right
now,
we
take
out
the
metal
tracks
that
are
in
there
and
we
insulate
behind
them
to
eliminate
voids,
and
we
put
in
a
pressure
tight
balance
system
that
balance
system
adds
pressure
to
the
sides
of
the
window
sash
and
eliminates
the
movement
side
to
side
yet
leaves
it
free
to
move
up
and
down
in
the
open.
A
So
we've
tightened
up
the
sides
of
the
window
when
we
do
this
to
your
window,
we've
eliminated
some
of
the
airflow.
So,
in
addition
to
that,
what
we're
gonna
do
at
that
time,
so
we're
gonna
weatherstrip
the
center
of
the
window,
the
top
and
the
bottom
of
the
window,
so
that
when
it's
closed
now
you're
all
drafty
window
fits
in
the
opening.
A
But
what
we'd
recommend
at
that
point
in
time
is
the
addition
of
a
storm
window
on
the
exterior
in
order
to
eliminate
the
rest
of
that
airflow.
That's
an
essential
part
of
the
double
hung
or
casement
style,
all
right,
I'm,
sorry,
glider
style
windows
used
throughout
the
30s
forties
fifties,
sixties
and
forward.
Is
that
it's
a
tandem
window
unit
being
a
tandem
window
that
the
outside
window
protects.
It
keeps
most
of
the
airflow
out.
A
The
inside
window
then
has
to
work
less
difficult,
even
or
less
hard,
and
you
reap
the
benefit
of
not
having
lost
the
energy
through
that
ever
infiltration
exfiltration.
We
also
talked
about
radiation
and
the
way
that
you're,
literally
losing
heat
calories
through
the
glass.
If
you
have
a
single
piece
of
glass,
you're
gonna
lose
it
at
a
rate.
That's
rather
quick
by
comparison
to
today's
windows.
A
Adding
a
storm
gives
you
a
dead
air
space
and
an
additional
protection
against
the
elements,
but
creates
a
dead
air
space
that
can
now
allow
for
slower
heat
loss
through
that
area.
So
you
can
eliminate
that
transmission.
Remember.
We
talked
about
that
being
a
good
thing
because
it
warms
up
the
house
during
the
cold
times
of
the
year
during
the
time
of
the
year
when
you
want
to
cool
the
inside
of
your
house.
So-
and
you
don't
want
to
introduce
that
warm
air
into
the
house,
because
you've
got
that
dead.
A
A
Not
everybody
has
storm
windows
on
their
house
right
now,
there's
other
things
that
can
be
done
if
your
existing
window,
for
instance,
isn't
in
this
type
of
condition,
and
that
looks
poor
in
the
house
and
you're
thinking
that
you
know
it
would
be
great
if
we
could
just
recondition
them,
but
then
they'd
still
be
poor.
Looking
windows
I'd
rather
have
mine.
Look
newer.
Sash
can
be
made.
That's
this
part
of
the
window.
A
The
balance
can
be
put
in,
and
now
you
have
a
new
looking
window
without
having
replaced
the
entire
window
through
the
opening.
It's
a
lesser
cost
issue
for
most
homeowners
and
after
all,
we're
already
spending
money
on
the
house.
We're
spending
money,
air-conditioned
the
house,
and
now
we've
got
a
maintenance
cost
to
add
to
that.
A
A
single
window
in
this
size
in
a
house
today
can
be
as
little
as
a
few
hundred
dollars
to
repair
and
fix
up
or
as
much
as
fifteen
or
eighteen
hundred
dollars
to
take
down
to
the
original
hole
in
the
wall
and
replaced
with
a
brand
new
window.
So
it
becomes.
You
know
the
thought
process
to
us
over
the
years
has
been
well.
Not
everybody
means
this
extreme,
but
not
everybody
can
get
away
with
this.
A
So
we
work
with
our
customers
to
find
a
comfortable
measure
of
cost
and
work
to
give
them
what
they
want
at
the
highest
efficiency
and
the
best
dollar
value.
So
tear
outs
not
always
the
first
thing
we
do,
but
tear
out
sometimes
becomes
what
you
need
to
do
and
when
you
do
a
tear
out.
What
are
we
here
today
for
a
replacement
window?
There's
companies
that
offer
vinyl
windows,
that
seems
to
be
the
group
of
people
that
represents
the
largest
number
of
window
replacers
in
the
industry.
You
have
somebody
come
over
to
your
house.
A
A
In
some
cases,
it's
a
very
good
solution
to
your
problem.
In
other
cases,
if
you
look
at
it
and
you
go
well
I
really
like
my
wood
windows,
I
like
the
way
wood
so
I,
like
the
comfortable,
feel
that
it
has
I,
have
wood
throughout
my
entire
house
and
yes,
I
see
that
you
have
a
woodgrain
appearance
to
your
window,
but
to
me
that
still
doesn't
look
like
what.
B
A
You
have
a
wood
window
and
in
about
eight
out
of
ten
cases,
they're
gonna
shake
their
head,
sadly,
and
say:
no
I'm.
Sorry,
we
don't.
This
is
the
window
that
we
saw
it's
our
high
energy
best
solution
to
your
problem
window,
the
other
two
companies
are
going
to
offer
you
a
wood
window
and
maybe
some
additional
solutions
like
the
repair
and
maintenance
that
we've
already
discussed.
A
If
you
do
go
with
a
wood
window,
a
couple
of
ways
to
do
it,
we
talked
about
just
replacing
the
operating
components
of
a
window
and
leaving
the
main
frame
and
trims
in
place.
That's
one!
It's
offered
by
quite
a
number
of
companies
like
mine,
Ray
that
actually
manufactures
windows.
It's
not
typically
offered
by
a
company
that
doesn't
there
are
other
alternatives.
A
This
being
one
really
decent
alternative
that
we
thunk
you
leave
the
main
frame
of
the
window
in
place.
So
just
like
replacing
the
sash
everything
stays
in
place
from
your
old
window.
We
don't
tear
it
down
to
the
hall.
So
now
we're
not
monkeying
with
your
siding,
goofing
up
the
sheetrock
to
the
inside
or
if
you
have
old
plaster
walls,
we're
not
disturbing
those
which
can
be
extremely
brittle
in
a
lot
of
cases,
because
we've
left
the
main
frame
of
the
window
in
place,
a
manufactured
window
that
represents
an
all
wood
window
to
the
interior.
A
Yet
in
fact,
is
hiding
a
clever
secret.
It
actually
has
a
vinyl
window.
Man
frame
end
to
the
exterior
it
has
a
solid
extruded
aluminum
exterior
that
in
most
cases,
will
never
need
to
be
painted
in
all
cases
will
never
rot
it's
impervious
to
moisture.
It's
been
analyzed,
it's
not
going
to
Corel
it
gonna
look
and
stay
just
the
way.
It
is
that
it's
put
in
and
with
a
few
minor
alterations
it's
going
to
fit.
Let
me
see
how
this
goes
there.
We
go
right
into
your
existing
opening
and
to
the
outside.
A
Look
like
the
new
all
aluminum
exterior
window
and
to
the
interior
continue
to
look
like
the
wood
window
that
you
had
in
place
originally
in
your
home.
This
is
a
really
good
alternative.
It's
a
full
window
replacement
where
we
tear
down
to
the
hole
in
the
wall
a
more
expensive
alternative
than
if
we
can
get
by
with
sash
alone
or
reconditioning
alone,
but
nonetheless,
it's
a
step
in
the
process
and
every
step
in
the
process
is
part
of
a
solution
that
may
work
for.
A
A
Hi,
when
we
move
through
that
evolution
of
you
know
taking
a
window
and
disassembling
it
and
repairing
what
needs
to
be
repaired
to
taking
out
some
components
and
for
lack
a
better
description,
putting
in
a
slightly
smaller
window
that
still
fits
into
the
hole
in
the
wall.
That
being
the
next
step
out,
the
last
one
final
step
in
a
replacement
of
a
window
is
going
to
that
hole
in
the
wall
and
in
some
cases,
it's
necessary
in
all
their
homes.
A
A
typical
a
lot
of
times
that
lack
of
insulation
cause
moisture
to
become
trapped
inside
the
walls
and
your
window
didn't
rot
from
the
part
that
you
saw
it
rotted
from
the
parts
that
you
didn't
see
that
which
was
come
inside
the
wall
and
that
can
cause
you
to
make
the
decision
that
window
replacement,
complete
replacement,
is
really
the
correct
alternative.
For
your
home
use,
if
window
replacement
is
necessary
on
your
home,
it
may
not
be
necessary
on
every
window.
We
could
do
the
repair
of
reconditioning
the
pocket
window.
A
A
Today
we
build
homes,
we
build
on,
what's
called
a
four
inch
increment,
in
other
words
the
size
of
a
window,
opening
the
size
of
the
door,
opening
increases
by
four
in
width
or
in
high
thorin
both
each
time
the
size
changes.
The
reason
they
do.
That
is
because
it's
much
less
expensive
as
a
manufacturer
to
make
10
different
window
sizes
than
it
is
to
make
an
infinite
number
of
window
sizes.
A
The
unfortunate
aspect
of
that
is,
if
you
go
out,
and
you
measured
your
windows
at
home,
diligently
done
your
work,
you
know
exactly
the
size
window,
you
need
to
fit
the
hole
in
the
wall
in
your
house.
You
go
out
to
the
Home
Depot
Menards
Lowe's,
all
perfectly
fine
sellers
of
window
and
door
products,
some
cheap
they're
called
commodity
products
they're
at
that
level,
because
hey
it's
brand-new,
take
care
of
it.
Going
forward,
probably
serve
you
for
a
good
period
of
time,
some
very
expensive
with
name
brands
on
them
again.
A
Good
products,
they're
gonna,
do
a
good
job
for
you
as
long
as
you
maintain
them
going
forward.
The
problem
is
that
when
we
were
building
houses
80
years
ago,
60
years
ago,
40
years
ago,
20
years
ago,
there
were
a
mix
of
window
manufacturers
from
80
to
a
hundred
years
ago.
You're
craftsmen
who
built
your
house,
probably
built
your
windows
on-site.
It
was
easy
with
a
single
piece
of
glass
and
frames
and
a
predisposition
for
size
based
on
the
architecture
of
the
house,
to
show
up
and
do
that.
A
Those
can
be
very
unique
windows
and
not
meet
that
incremental
building
sequence.
That
builders
today
use
that
continued
with
window
manufacturing
companies
when
they
became
the
mass
producers
of
Windows,
just
like
today,
with
the
4-inch
increment
used
to
be
a
two
inch
increment
and
for
about
40
years.
You
had
two
inch
increments,
so
if
you
had
a
32
inch
window
and
today
you
find
out
you're
only
gonna
be
able
to
buy
a
30
or
a
36
or
a
34
inch
window.
None
of
those
are
gonna
fit
without
altering
your
home.
A
The
advantage
to
working
with
a
window
manufacturing
company
that
makes
window
products
and
has
nothing
mass-produced
as
a
single
line
product
is
that
we
can
make
something
fit
to
your
house.
We
can
give
you
the
benefit
of
a
precise
that
one
would
come
out
to
the
jobsite
to
put
the
window
in
the
house,
so
the
exchange
becomes
easy
old
window
out
new
window
in
exterior
appearance.
If
you
have
wood
windows
on
your
house
right
now,
that
are
over
20
years
old,
they
probably
look
like
this.
A
They've
got
a
wood
molding
around
the
edge
of
the
windows
and
across
the
top,
a
pocket
that
was
intended
for
the
storm
window
all
along
and
a
sloping
sill,
so
that
our
inclement
weather
can
get
away
from
the
bottom
edge
of
the
window.
So
the
interior
row
would
tilt
sash
so
that
when
it
comes
time
to
clean
that
window,
it's
very
easy
to
remove
from
the
opening
replacement
repair,
also
tilt,
sash,
very
easy
to
replace
and
repair
your
window
and
then
still
clean
it.
A
In
some
cases
several
thousands
of
dollars
per
window.
But
if
you
have
a
historical
home
built
350
years
ago,
and
you
live
on
the
East
Coast,
where
the
only
homes
that
age
are
still
around,
you
do
that.
If
you
live
in
Minnesota,
where
our
oldest
home
and
trust
me,
we
go
down
to
Walnut
Grove
and
we're
gonna.
Go
look
for
the
Little
House
on
the
Prairie.
We're
gonna
find
nothing
in
the
state
of
Minnesota,
that's
much
more
than
about
honey.
Twenty
years
we're
pretty
new
state,
but
a
hundred
and
twenty
year
old
window.
A
A
A
When
we
see
the
window
coming
together
at
the
end,
the
New
Balances,
the
recondition
sash
going
in
we've
restored
an
existing
window.
Then
we
look
at
the
tandem
situation.
If
we've
done
restoration,
storm
windows
becoming
important
storm
window
can
be
put
on.
Anyhow,
we
build
them.
If
this
is
the
way
your
house
looks
and
you've
got
round
top
windows
on,
it
will
do
that.
These
are
called
eyebrow
windows.
We
also
do
eyebrows.
A
Even
many,
many
of
our
commercial,
architectural
schools,
universities
and
historic
buildings
across
the
country,
Stremme
doors,
are
an
important
part
of
a
project
as
well.
We
won't
spend
a
lot
of
time
on
because
we
all
know
what
a
storm
door
is.
That's
the
door
that
protects
the
front
door
on
our
house,
maybe
the
side
doors
on
my
house.
A
The
reason
that
we
have
MS
for
security
purposes
are
initially
so
we
could
open
up
a
window
in
the
door,
leave
the
door
standing
open
to
invite
our
friends
and
family
to
come
visit
yet
giving
a
modicum
of
security.
It's
also
a
good
way
to
prevent
air
up
air
loss
at
the
door.
We
offer
storm
windows
and
all
designs,
as
you
can
see
here,
for
all
ages
of
houses.
A
Without
the
overwhelming
pressure
of
having
somebody
try
and
twist
your
hand,
make
you
buy
something
or
feel
uncomfortable
about
not
buying
it.
We
thank
Bloomington
for
inviting
us
today
and
I,
thank
all
of
you
for
coming
today
and
I.
Ask
if
you'd
like
to
have
any
further
questions
answered
or,
if
I
skipped
over
something
too
fast.
You
want
us
to
back
up
just
a
minute.
Let's
take
a
moment,
and
anybody
that
has
anything
to
ask
feel
free.
A
Insulated
glass
replacement
is
it
repair
is
not
something
that
can
be
done
once
the
seal
has
been
violated.
If
you
have
a
hermetically
sealed
package
which
the
insulated
glass
portion
of
a
window
is
the
edge,
has
the
two
pieces
of
glass
literally
being
glued
together
around
a
spacer
mechanism
and
somewhere
along
that
perimeter
edges
where
the
void
happened,
the
adhesive
let
go,
we
could
take
the
window
apart.
We
could
polish
all
that
away.
We
could
put
some
new
adhesive
on
it.
A
A
It's
not
practical
to
do
that
and-
and
it's
a
shame,
I've
actually
gone
to
a
home
where
I
had
a
past
customer
called
me
up.
A
wonderful
woman,
I
had
known
for
years
and
years
and
years
said:
Greg
I
took
my
windows
apart
to
clean
them
and
I
can't
get
him
back
together.
Can
you
come
over?
I
said
fine,
so
I
go
over.
She
literally
took
her
windows
apart.
She
took
the
sash
out.
She
took
the
screws
on
the
side
out.
She
pulled.
A
The
sash
part
took
the
two
pieces
of
glass
apart
and
cleaned
her
glass.
We
put
in
new
insulated
glass
floor
solved
your
problem,
but
that's
really
the
what
you
have
to
do
is
the
new
glass
package.
So
I'd
answer
your
question.
Sure
we
can
remembering
that
it's
much
easier
for
me
to
come
out
measure
produce
the
glass
return
in
an
hour
or
so
replace
the
glass
unwaith.
Is
it
expensive
expenses
kind
of
a
relative
or
subjective
term?
A
It's
relative
to
the
amount
of
material
in
time
it's
subjective
by
what
you
feel
is
expensive,
I
drove
here
today
and
what
I
don't
think
is
an
expensive
car.
Although,
when
I
look
around
the
parking
lot,
I
see
some
rather
expensive
cars
out
there,
but
I'm
not
going
to
tell
you
what
I
came
in
so
you're,
not
gonna
know
how
subjective
my
reality
of
cost
is.
A
Did
anybody
else?
Have
a
question
well
again,
I.
Thank
you
for
coming.
I
invite
you
to
have
us
out
to
the
house.
If
you
think
that
we
can
do
something
to
help,
you
I
certainly
feel
we
can,
but
the
rest
is
up
to
you.
Thanks
for
coming,
we
are
located
both
in
Bloomington
and
Golden
Valley.
Our
location
in
Bloomington
is
at
88th
and
Nicollet.
A
A
The
entire
manufacturing
facility
to
the
southern
part
of
Minnesota
I'm
in
Minnesota
I
will
border
in
Osage,
which
happened
to
be
his
hometown,
we're
the
single
largest
employer
in
that
town,
now
kind
of
a
benevolent
thing
to
do
when
you
think
about
it,
but
our
showroom
is
located
in
Golden
Valley.
If
anybody
knows
where
the
kare
11
television
studios
are
on
highway,
55
we're
two
blocks
are
on
my
business
card,
which
is
on
the
flyer
given
to
each
of
you,
except
for
yourself,
sir,
because
you
came
in
and
I'll
be
happy
to
give
you
one.
A
Here's
my
email
address
my
cell
phone
number
and
my
desk
number.
They
both
ring
the
same
technology
today
being
what
it
is.
I
can't
get
away
from
being
contacted.
So
that's
great
it'll
get
me
back
to
you
quicker
and
our
showroom
is
open,
Monday
through
Friday
from
9:00
a.m.
until
5:00,
and
we
have
assistants
there
to
take
questions
show
product.
We
have
a
very
nice
set
up
where
you
can
see
all
of
our
offerings
today,
I'm
only
speaking
about
a
small
amount
of
what
actually
due
his
company
this.
