Description
Would you like to learn about small things you can do inside your own home to save energy and money? Look no further than the Center for Energy and Environment's Home Energy Squad Enhanced program.
A
A
My
name
is
Stacey
boots
camp
I
work
at
the
center
for
energy
and
environment
and
I
work
on
our
residential
program,
which
Bloomington
is
a
partner
city
with
our
home
energy
squad,
enhanced
so
maybe
you've
heard
of
the
center
for
energy
and
environment.
We
work
on
several
different
energy
efficiency
programs.
We
have
a
lighting
program
for
businesses.
We
worked
on
the
mac
program.
The
sound
insulation
program
are
on
the
airport.
A
We
also
have
a
lending
centres,
we're
nonprofit,
so
we
have
access
to
very
low
interest
rates
to
help
people
complete
energy
efficiency
projects
and
also
other
home
upgrades.
So
the
home
energy
squad
enhanced
program
has
been
available.
This
is
the
second
year
now
in
Bloomington,
and
we've
had
over
300
people
participate.
So
that's
really
we're
really
happy
about
that
and
we've
got
lots
of
people
signing
up
this
winter
to
especially
with
the
high
heating
bills.
We've
all
been
seen.
So
it's
a
comprehensive
program
where
we
teach
people
about
saving
money
and
energy.
A
Do
the
Home
Energy
visits
where
we
install
products
to
help
people
save,
and
then
we
also
connect
people
to
financing
rebates.
So
it's
the
whole
package.
It's
a
very
comprehensive
program
and
we're
really
excited
to
be
here
in
Bloomington
with
it.
So
just
to
give
you
a
quick
breakdown
of
what
the
visit
is.
It's
a
two-hour
visit
with
two
energy
professionals
like
I,
said
they're.
A
They
install
products,
they
also
do
some
diagnostic
tests
on
the
heating
system,
water,
heater
insulation,
inspection,
blower
door
test,
and
we
leave
you
with
a
nice
report
that
kind
of
gives
you
a
roadmap
for
looking
at
different
upgrades
going
forward
with
your
home.
So
here's
some
of
the
products
that
we
install
and
everything
is
included
in
the
fifty
dollars
that
people
pay.
So
it's
really
a
great
deal.
The
Bloomington
HRA
pays
down
the
cost
for
residents
and
it
makes
it
really
affordable
and
it
you'll
definitely
get
your
money
worth.
A
So
these
are
the
program
partners
hi
come
on
in
so
first
of
all,
today,
I
was
just
going
to
talk
a
little
bit
about
how
we
use
energy.
So
in
Minnesota
we
get
our
energy
from
a
variety
of
different
sources.
A
The
greatest
majority
still
comes
from
coal
here
in
Minnesota,
but
we
are
really
expanding
with
especially
the
solar
and
the
wind.
The
renewables
so
that's
great
to
see,
but
the
best
source
of
efficiency
is
my.
If
it
is
energy
saved.
So
then
you
don't
even
have
to
spend
the
money
in
the
first
place
and
we
don't
need
to
build
any
more
power
plants
because
we
have
less
of
a
demand
by
being
more
efficient.
So
some
of
the
benefits
of
energy
efficiency
is,
as
you
all
probably
know,
hopefully
reduces.
A
A
So
here
I
have
a
breakdown
for
different
sections
of
how
Minnesota
homes
use
energy.
So
I'm
going
to
talk
a
little
bit
about
each
of
these
in
the
presentation
and
give
you
some
tips
for
ways
to
save
in
each
of
these
sectors
of
how
energy
is
used
in
your
home.
So
starting
off
the
the
smallest
percentage
of
energy
used
in
your
home
goes
to
water
heating.
The
next
highest
is
appliances.
Fifteen
percent
people
are
often
surprised
by
that.
They
think
the
appliance
is
used
more.
A
But
if
you
don't
have
the
good
habits
of
knowing
how
to
use
them
and
making
the
most
out
of
them,
you're
not
going
to
capture
as
much
savings
as
you
have
the
potential
for
so
we're
going
to
start
at
the
bottom
of
the
house
and
work
our
way
up,
starting
with
the
water
heating,
so
both
for
safety
and
efficiency.
What
is
recommended
for
water
heater
settings
is
120
degrees.
A
So
that's
right
here
at
the
triangle
and
each
notch
that
you
move
up
on
the
dial
on
your
water
heater
is
about
10,
more
degrees,
so
at
120
degrees.
It
takes
five
minutes
for
the
water
to
be
running,
for
someone
to
receive
a
burn
and
just
one
notch
higher
at
the
a-level.
130
degrees
it
takes
30
seconds
only
so,
especially
if
people
have
children
in
the
house
I
encourage
you
to
definitely
check
where
your
water
heater
is
set.
They
also
do
that
at
the
home
energy
visit.
A
If
you
have
a
water
heater
blanket
on
so
the
water
heater
blanket
is
just
another
layer
of
insulation
that
helps
keep
the
heat
in
and
keep
that
storage
temperature
a
little
bit
warmer
than
if
it
was
not
on
there.
Another
way
you
can
save
with
water
heating
is
by
having
high
efficiency,
water
fixtures,
so
things
like
high-efficiency
showerheads,
faucet,
aerators,
toilets.
There's
a
lot
of
these
available.
Now
we
do
install
the
high-efficiency
showerheads
and
faucet
aerators
at
the
home
visits.
A
We
don't
bring
for
the
toilets
along
in
our
little
van,
but
if
you're
doing
a
bath
remodel,
I
encourage
you
to
look
for
a
lower
flush
rate
on
the
toilets,
because
there's
some
really
great
ones
out
there
now
so
another
way
you
can
say
with
the
water
heating
is
by
washing
your
clothes
in
cold
water.
So
is
anyone
already
trying
this
may
be
great,
so
both
to
make
the
colors
in
your
clothes
last
longer
and
also
to
save
energy?
A
This
is
a
great
thing
to
try
up
to
ninety
percent
of
the
energy
used
when
washing
clothes
goes
to
heating
the
water.
So
you
can
capture
some
good
savings
here
about
thirty
five
dollars
a
year
for
every
person
in
your
household,
so
that
really
adds
up
and
then
we're
going
to
jump
up
to
the
appliances.
Now
so
does
anyone
have
a
refrigerator
in
their
house
that
looks
like
this
I
wish.
I
did
I
really
like
this
color.
A
It
would
go
nicely
with
my
kitchen,
but
this
one
is
probably
from
the
1970s
and
uses
at
least
a
hundred
and
fifty
dollars
of
electricity
a
year
where's
a
new
one
of
the
same
size.
That's
an
energy
star,
rated
refrigerator
would
only
is
forty
dollars
of
electricity
a
year.
So
this
is
a
really
great
return
on
your
investment.
If
you
do
have
an
older
refrigerator,
you
will
definitely
save
over
a
hundred
dollars
a
year,
and
that
puts
money
in
your
pocket
quicker
and
then
you
can
go,
spend
it
on
other
things.
A
So
if
you
are
looking
at
doing
a
excuse,
me
kitchen,
remodel
I,
just
encourage
people
to
make
sure
to
look
that
they're
getting
an
energy
star
rated
product.
So
you
know
that
it's
been
vetted
by
the
Department
of
Energy
and
also
to
look
at
the
yellow
energy
guide,
because
that's
a
scale
of
how
much
energy
is
used,
compare
comparing
models
of
similar
style
and
size,
so
just
want
to
look
for
the
less
less
use
energy.
So
that
is
a
great
way
to
save.
A
As
I
said,
you
can
save
about
a
hundred
dollars
a
year
or
more
also
I
like
to
mention
two
people
on
this
slide,
that
between
march
and
October
Xcel
Energy
has
a
program
whether
they
will
come
and
pick
up
your
second
refrigerator.
So
maybe
it's
one
in
your
basement
or
your
garage,
but
they
will
have
a
second
refrigerator
recycling
program
to
encourage
people
to
use
less
electricity.
So
what
my
mom
did?
A
She
actually
just
had
an
old
refrigerator
and
she
just
kind
of
downsized
to
one
of
those
little
dorm
size,
fridges
and
those
only
use
about
thirty
dollars
of
electricity
a
year
versus
you
know,
150
to
200,
so
that
was
a
good
savings
and
best
of
all
they
pick
it
up
for
you,
Xcel
Energy
does
with
their
program.
So
you
don't
have
to
try
to
haul
that
out
of
your
basement,
so
you
can
just
look
at
their
website
and
enroll
to
have
your
refrigerator
picked
up
if
you
want
to
participate
in
that
program.
A
Okay,
so
now
we're
moving
up
to
the
next
level
of
the
house.
Has
anyone
ever
walked
into
a
room
and
saw
something
like
this
in
your
house,
some
beady
eyes
staring
at?
You
could
be
your
family
room.
So
all
of
these
little
beady
eyes
that
are
are
looking
at
you
here
are
signs
that
energy
is
being
wasted.
So
anything
that
has
any
sort
of
lighting
display
or
remote
control
is
constantly
drawing
power,
even
if
it's,
even
if
it's
not
on
and
being
used.
A
You
probably
want
to
leave
on,
like
your
modem,
TiVo
cable
box,
because
those
take
a
long
time
to
reset
and
it
can
be
kind
of
annoying,
but
there's
a
lot
of
things
on
people's
entertainment,
centers
that
can
be
plugged
in
and
turned
off.
Just
like
you
would
turn
off
the
light
switch
when
you
leave
a
room
you
can.
You
can
put
your
television,
your
game
systems
on
this,
and
then
you
can
save
probably
about
fourteen
fifteen
dollars
a
year
for
every
entertainment
center
in
your
house.
So
this
is.
A
This
is
a
great
thing
and
why
not
capture
some
savings
where
you
can
another
way
you
can
save
with
the
electronics
in
your
house
is
with
a
desktop
computer
to
any
of
you
still
have
these
in
your
home
or
at
work.
So
a
lot
of
people
will
have
the
screen
set
up
to
go
to
sleep,
but
maybe
they
don't
have
the
tower
set
up
and
that's
where
the
real
savings
potential
is
because
if
that
isn't
shut
down,
the
fans
keep
running
and
waste
a
lot
of
electricity.
A
So
you
can
simply
go
into
the
control
panel
and
then
manage
the
power
settings
on
the
hard
drives.
So
you
can
just
put
those
to
sleep
like
the
computer
and
then,
when
you
move
the
mouse
or
touch
the
keypad,
everything
comes
back
up
to
power
or
you
can
just
have
it
turned
off.
If
you
only
use
it
once
a
day,
just
turn
it
off
altogether,
but
what
there
was
a
study
done
that
found
that
only
twenty
five
percent
of
the
time
that
people's
computers
were
on
with
someone
in
front
of
them
using
them.
A
So
that's
a
big
opportunity
for
savings
when
people
are
leaving
their
computers
on
not
putting
them
to
sleep
and
they're,
not
using
them.
So
if
you
do
happen
to
have
a
really
old
dust,
desktop
computer
I
think
one
of
my
aunts
might
have
one
of
these.
You
can
often
save
over
a
hundred
dollars
a
year
just
by
doing
this
simple
action,
so
it
all
adds
up.
A
Okay,
so
does
anyone.
It
might
be
a
little
bit
hard
to
see
recognize
this
little.
These
little
baked
goods
up
in
the
top
corner.
It's
an
easy
bake,
oven,
I
wasn't
lucky
enough
to
have
one
when
I
was
kid,
but
some
of
my
friends
did
so
all
of
these
little
miniature
baked
goods.
Does
anyone
know
how
they
were
baked?
Oh
yes
and
incandescent
light
bulb,
and
so
the
reason
that
that
was
able
to
bake
the
miniature
baked
goods
is
that
ninety
percent
of
light-
that's
our
excuse
me.
A
A
These
this
is
a
picture
of
the
kind
of
light
bulbs
that
we
install
in
the
home
energy
squad
program
and
we
also
install
other
varieties
as
well,
but
maybe
some
of
you
have
already
started
using
the
compact
fluorescent
light
bulbs,
they
use
seventy-five
percent
less
energy
than
the
incandescent
light
bulb.
Everyone
that
you
install
in
a
high
use
area
will
save
you
about
five
dollars
a
ball
per
year.
So
there's
twenty
five
dollars
right
there.
That
adds
up
I
like
to
remind
people
that
the
compact
fluorescent
light
bulbs
do
need
to
be
recycled.
A
A
So
the
next
step
in
the
evolution
of
the
light
bulb
has
been
the
LED
light
bulb,
and
these
actually
use
eighty
to
eighty-five
percent
less
than
the
incandescent
light
bulb.
I
know
that
the
price
was
quite
high,
but
it's
been
coming
down
drastically,
especially
the
past
year.
So
I
encourage
you.
If
you
haven't
tried
out
an
LED,
try
it
out
I
think
they
perform
better
than
the
compact
fluorescent
light
bulbs.
A
lot
of
people
have
complained
about
those.
These
do
have
a
much
better
dimming
quality.
A
A
Okay,
now
we're
moving
up
to
the
top
of
the
house
here.
So
do
some
of
you
already
have
programmable
thermostats
yeah.
So
this
is
a
great
way
for
saving,
because
you
can
just
set
it
and
forget
it
and
save
for
the
times
that
you're
sleeping
and
when
you're
gone
during
the
day.
So,
what's
kind
of
quoted
by
the
Department
of
at
she
is
eight
degrees
for
8
hours,
so
by
setting
it
back
eight
degrees
for
8
hours,
you'll
save
roughly
about
a
hundred
dollars
a
year.
A
A
One
thing
I
like
to
remind
people
who
do
have
programmable
thermostats
a
lot
of
them.
The
batteries
need
to
be
changed
out
every
year.
So
just
in
case
you
go
on
a
trip
in
the
winter
just
like
to
remind
people,
so
they
still
have
a
nice
house
intact
when
they
get
back
so
here,
I've
added
up
every
action
that
we
just
talked
about
and
the
savings
that
goes
along
with
it.
A
So
that's
over
three
hundred
dollars
a
year
which
isn't
anything
to
scoff
at
so
I,
encourage
you
all
to
try
some
of
these
low
and
no-cost
things
if
you're
not
already
doing
them
and
see
how
much
savings
you
can
capture
in
your
house,
so
I'm
added
in
some
slides
about
some
typical
winter
problems.
This
year
has
been
especially
bad
with
ice
dams,
I
see
them
everywhere,
and
so,
if
anyone
is
experiencing
this,
maybe
you've
experienced
it
in
the
past
and
not
sure
how
to
solve
this
problem.
A
So
I'd
like
to
you
know,
offer
up
solutions
for
people.
So
a
lot
of
people
think
you
know
they
need
a
new
roof
or
they
need
to
use
the
heating
coils
when
they're
having
ice
dam
problems.
But
what's
really
going
on
is
that
the
integrity
of
the
envelope
in
the
home
going
into
the
Attic
it
has
been
compromised
so
there
when
warmed
air
from
inside
the
house
escapes
into
the
attic
area,
then
that's
what
causes
the
ice
dams
so
there's
all
of
these
places
where
you
can
be
losing
heat
into
your
attic.
A
A
So
when
that
warm
air
escapes
into
the
unheated
attic
space
it
let
the
snow,
starts
melting
and
then
goes
to
travels
down
to
the
unheated,
eaves
and
soffits,
and
then
freezes-
and
so
we
see
this
all
over
the
Twin
Cities
and
it's
a
really
big
problem
this
year,
so
I
like
to
encourage
people
to
either
get
up
there
themselves
or
to
hire
someone
to
help.
You
fix
the
ice
dam
issue,
so
here's
here's
some
of
the
places
that
can
be
sealed
up
either
with
spray
foam
or
call
there's
different
products
that
you
can
use.
A
But
why
spend
the
money
heating
your
home
when
you're
just
losing
the
heat
and
also
it
causes
ice
dams?
So
with
that
warm
air
escaping
into
the
Attic,
then
it
just
constantly
pulls
in
air
from
places
like
windows,
doors,
making
our
homes
feel
really
drafty
and
also
dry,
because
the
more
it
warmed
air
that
escapes
the
more
cool
air
comes
in
and
then
we're
just
feeling
really
uncomfortable
with
that
cold.
A
None
humidified
air,
and
so
we
have
to
use
humidifiers
and
different
things
to
make
ourselves
more
comfortable
in
the
winter,
when
the
solution
is
just
to
seal
up
the
attic
spaces
and
keep
that
warmed
air
inside
and
also
lower
your
heating
bills.
So
here's
some
pictures
of
things
that
people
do
to
stop.
The
drafts
that
are
coming
in
we've
got
some
gasket
seals
on
the
outlet
plates
door.
Weatherstripping
is
a
good
thing
to
cut
down
on
draft
enos.
Some
people
put
plastic
on
their
windows.
A
So
another
way
that
you
can
save
is
just
by
making
sure
that
your
damper
is
closed.
A
lot
of
homes
that
we
go
into,
we
find
that
the
damper
just
won't
close
on
the
chimney
and
then
there's
really
a
lot
of
heated
air
just
unnecessarily
going
up
the
chimney,
and
then
the
furnace
is
having
to
work
harder
to
always
keep
reheating
that
warmed,
air,
that's
being
lost
so
just
checking.
This
is
a
great
way
to
save.
A
A
People
are
busy
I
know,
that's
why
we
created
our
program
that
where
we
come
out
and
do
the
weatherstrip
a
and
install
the
high-efficiency
products
and
also
try
to
identify
where
the
leakiness
in
the
homes
are
point
that
out
to
people
and
then
let
them
know
give
them
a
roadmap
for
what
needs
to
be
done
in
the
home
for
more
for
greater
efficiency.
So
these
are
some
of
the
folks
who
do
the
home
visits.
A
I
actually
go
out
and
do
them
to
when
we're
really
busy,
so
we're
all
certified
energy
auditors
and
here's
some
pictures
of
the
installs
that
we
do,
here's
again
a
breakdown
of
what
the
visit
is
that's
available
to
here's.
This
picture
on
the
left
is
a
blower
door
test
being
done.
So
that's
what
identifies
the
air
leaks
in
the
home
and,
where
the
house
the
potential
for
the
house
to
be
sealed
up
better.
A
Then
we
also
do
the
testing
of
the
mechanicals,
the
heating
system,
water,
heater,
to
make
sure
that
if
we
do
recommend
the
insulation
and
air
sealing
that
by
sealing
up
your
house
more
you're
not
going
to
have
any
problems
with
furnaces
or
water
heaters
back
drafting.
We
also
give
recommendations
on
ventilation.
The
air
exchange
that's
necessary
for
the
number
of
inhabitants
in
the
home,
and
then
we
help
people
with
with
next
steps.
Our
reports
list
all
of
the
rebates
people
qualify
for
we
have
the
low
interest
financing
for
energy
improvements.
A
Another
part
of
this
program
that
our
partner
cities
really
like
is
that
we
have
this
quality
assurance
program
with
insulation
contractors.
So
a
lot
of
times
you
know,
unfortunately
in
the
past
or
have
been
insulation
contractors
that
take
advantage
of
people
and
they
just
you
know,
go
in
and
blow
the
insulation
in
an
hour
or
two
and
then
close
it
up
and
say
they're
done.
But
then
people
are
still
having
problems
with
ice
dams
and
high
heating
bills,
and
so
what's
at
what
happened?
A
There
is
that
they
they
weren't
sealing
off
all
of
those
penetrations
into
the
attic
spaces
and
people
were
getting
taken
advantage
of.
So
that's
why
we
created
this
quality
assurance
program.
We
have
insulation
contractors,
go
through
the
building
performance
institute,
certification,
they
have
to
pass
the
test
and
they
sign
an
agreement
to
work
up
to
these
higher
standards
and
we
actually
a
building
analysts
who
go
out
and
randomly
inspect
ten
percent
of
the
jobs
that
they
do.
A
I
think
there's
one
of
the
contractors
whose
insulation
contractors
who
I
saw
him
here,
they've
gone
through
the
program.
So
it's
it's
really.
A
lot
brings
a
lot
of
peace
of
mind
to
homeowners,
because
when
you
install
a
new
window,
you
can
see
that
you
have
a
new
window
and
if
it
was
installed
properly
or
not,
but
most
people
don't
jump
up
into
their
attic
and
dig
through
the
insulation
to
make
sure
it
was
done
correctly.
So
that's
why
we've
created
this
program
and
we're
always
available
for
follow
up
afterwards.
A
If
people
have
questions,
our
program
has
been
very
well
received.
We've
served
over
8,000
homes
in
the
Twin
Cities
in
Minneapolis.
We've
done
a
seven
percent
of
the
homes
there
and
participants
a
ninety
nine
percent
of
people,
so
they
would
it
to
a
friend.
So
we
feel
pretty
pretty
happy
about
that.
A
So
here's
how
the
program
works.
You've
heard
about
the
program
you
can
sign
up
for
a
visit.
If
you
would
like
to
do
that,
are
both
is
number
18
down
there
or
you
can
simply
just
take
one
of
these
Flyers.
If
you
want
to
think
about
it,
participate
in
the
home
visit,
you
have
to
be
there,
so
you
can
learn
about
the
different
energy
saving
opportunities
in
your
house
and
also
make
decisions
about
what
things
you
would
like
installed.
A
All
of
the
the
products
are
included
in
the
fifty
dollars,
though,
and
so,
and
then,
where
we're
there
for
questions
to
help
you
through
the
whole
process
and
hopefully
make
you
more
comfortable
in
your
home
and
start
saving
energy.
So
these
are
the
partners
that
have
brought
the
program
here
to
Bloomington.
We
do
have
other
partners,
cities
too,
but
since
I've
been
Bloomington
I'm
talking
about
this
this
program,
so
do
any
of
you
have
questions
that
I
could
answer
today.
A
All
right
well,
thank
you
very
much
for
your
time
and
as
I
mentioned,
we
have
some
energy
saving
prizes
down
at
our
booth.
So
if
you
go
spin
the
wheel,
you
can
maybe
win
an
LED
light
nightlight
or
some
gasket
seals,
and
we
all
love
fun.
Free
stuff
at
these
home
shows.
So
thanks
again
and
have
a
great
time
today
at
the
show.
