From YouTube: Waste disposal gets greener at City facilities
Description
City facilities are going greener. Public Works talks us through the changes and shares some tips for making your home more sustainable.
A
Beginning
on
monday
november,
9th
the
city
started,
collecting
organics
such
as
food
scraps
and
paper
towels
for
composting
at
civic,
plaza,
public
works,
public
health
and
the
kitchen
at
creekside
community
center
organics
recycling
containers
will
be
placed
in
staff,
kitchenettes,
cafeterias
and
select
conference
rooms.
Public
works
conducted
waste
stores
at
civic,
plaza
and
public
works
earlier
this
month
and
found
that
44
of
the
material
in
the
trash
was
organic
material
that
could
have
been
composted
by
participating
in
organics
recycling.
A
Our
food
scraps
and
non-recyclable
paper
products
will
be
recycled
into
compost,
rather
than
disposed
of
as
garbage
reducing
our
greenhouse
gas
emissions
and
turning
those
organics
into
valuable
nutrients
for
soils.
So
I
have
here
some
materials
left
over
from
a
fast
food
meal.
You
may
be
wondering
what
kinds
of
products
can
go
in
which
bin.
So
first
of
all,
I
have
the
paper
bag
here.
A
A
A
Lastly,
I
have
a
couple
of
plastic
items,
so
I
have
these
catch-up
packets
items
like
this
that
come
in
a
plastic
package.
These
are
not
recyclable.
You
would
want
to
throw
them
away,
but
if
you
did
want
to
get
rid
of
the
ketchup,
you
could
also
put
that
in
the
organics
recycling,
since
that
is
a
food
product.
A
The
last
item
I
have
is
a
plastic
coffee
cup
like
from
caribou
you're,
probably
familiar
with.
This
still
goes
in
the
recycling
minus
the
straw,
but
one
thing
that
you
might
run
into
is
a
compostable
paper
or
compostable
plastic.
So
I
have
with
me
a
coffee
cup
with
a
compostable
plastic
lid
and
a
compostable
paper
coffee
cup.
You
can
tell
that
they're
compostable
because
they
have
this
certified
compostable
logo
on
them
due
to
the
requirements
of
our
organics
recycler.
A
It
needs
to
have
this
logo
before
it
can
go
in
the
bin,
but
if
you
do
see
it,
it's
good
to
go
so
on
the
paper
clip
this
world,
centric,
bpi
or
cedar.
Creek
might
be
one
that
you
see
and
then
an
imprint
like
this
means
that
the
plastic
is
compostable
as
well.
So
if
you
see
these,
it
can
go
in
the
bin
if
not
both
of
these
would
go
in
the
trash.
A
So
I
have
here
some
items
that
you
might
find
in
a
bag
lunch.
So
I
have
a
plastic
sandwich
bag,
a
napkin,
a
tea
bag
and
a
deli
container
with
some
food
leftovers
and
a
paper
straw
wrapper
in
it.
So,
first
of
all
the
plastic
bag,
you
can
either
reuse
this
or
throw
this
away.
Plastic
film
generally
can't
be
recycled
and
plastic
in
general
can't
go
into
the
organics,
so
this
would
go
in
the
trash.
Next
I
have
a
napkin
and
a
tea
bag.
A
Both
of
these
are
paper
products,
so
you
can
generally
put
them
in
the
organics.
One
thing
to
watch
out
for
with
the
tea
bag
is,
if
it's
a
paper
one
like
this,
that's
okay,
but
if
it's
one
of
those
pyramid
bags
that
are
a
little
bit
plasticky,
those
would
go
in
the
trash
and
last
I
have
my
deli
container
with
some
leftovers
in
it.
So,
as
I
mentioned,
leftovers
can
go
in
the
organics
bin.
I
also
have
some
paper
straw
wrappers.
A
Since
those
are
paper,
they
can
go
in
as
well,
and
then
the
plastic
deli
container,
of
course,
is
hard
plastic
and
recyclable,
so
that
will
go
in
our
recycling.
So
for
now
the
city's
organics
recycling
program
in
its
facilities
is
limited
mostly
to
staff.
At
the
moment,
although
we
are
hoping
to
bring
organics
recycling
into
public
spaces
in
the
near
future
to
coincide
with
the
rollout
of
curbside
organics
recycling
for
residents
within
the
next
couple
of
years.
A
However,
if
you
are
a
resident,
you
can
participate
in
organics
recycling
now
by
using
the
bloomington
organics
recycling
drop-off
program.
So
the
city
runs
a
program
where
you
can
bring
your
organics
to
one
central
site.
Actually,
the
city
has
three
sites,
one
at
busch
lake
park,
one
at
value
park
and
then
one
operated
by
hennepin
county,
that
is
near
city
hall.
You
can
bring
your
organics
to
that
site,
drop
them
off
and
the
city
will
take
them
to
be
recycled
and
you
can
sign
up
for
that
program
on
the
city's
website.
