Description
For this week’s Verbrugge View, I go to new heights to highlight a city job! You’ll also find information about the incentivized retirement plan, Minnesota Valley State Trail and World Fair possibly coming to Minnesota.
A
One
of
the
great
things
about
living
in
Bloomington
is
the
urban
canopy
trees,
add
a
lot
of
value
to
our
residential
properties
and
they
also
create
a
serene
environment.
But
one
thing
about
the
trees
is
they
actually
need
quite
a
bit
of
tending
so
today,
on
the
verbrugge
eve
you
we're
going
to
learn
about
the
tree
trimming
crew
in
our
public
works
department.
Why
don't
you
come
along
with
me.
A
We're
standing
in
front
of
one
of
our
bucket
trucks,
with
Dustin
Jacobson
from
our
public
works
department,
so
we're
going
to
ask
duck
Dustin
he's
one
of
our
experts
around
here.
How
we
do
things
why
we
do
it
and
then
he's
going
to
give
me
a
little
tutorial
and
I'm
going
to
go
up
inside
the
bucket
and
take
a
crack
at
taking
down
one
of
these
trees,
so
our
crews
work
in
the
winter
on
the
tree
trimming
more
than
the
summertime.
Why
is
that?
Well,.
B
It's
better
for
the
trees
to
do
the
trimming
in
the
wintertime
at
the
time
when
all
the
tissues
are
dormant
and
there's
less
likelihood
of
transmitting
any
types
of
diseases.
It
also
minimizes
any
issues
like
in
the
spring.
If
there's
going
to
be
like
insects
that
could
find
that
new
wound
and
possibly
make
a
home
in
the
tree
and.
B
Lately,
you
know
the
last
few
years,
obviously
with
the
advent
of
emerald
ash
borer,
that
type
of
survey
has
become
a
lot
more
important
and
so
every
winter
now
that
becomes
a
part
of
my
job
is
going
around
and
looking
for
that
woodpecker
activity,
that's
much
easier
to
see
when
there's
no
leaves
on
the
tree.
So.
A
B
The
easiest
way
a
lot
of
times
when
I'm,
just
driving
by
as
you
can
see
what
we
call
blondie.
So
that's
where,
like
a
wood,
peckers
kind
of
excavated
out
a
little
patch
down
to
the
wood
and
a
lot
of
times
that
will
show
up
real
bright,
in
contrast
to
the
dark
gray
fire
coming
outside,
so
which
trees.
A
B
B
B
A
A
B
What
we
have
is
a
joystick
control
system
on
this
bucket,
so
it's
if
you're
kind
of
familiar
with
running
a
joystick
on
a
video
game.
It
works
pretty
similar.
You
have
this
trigger,
that's
actually
your
throttle.
It's
on
the
bottom
side
of
the
handle,
and
so
that
will
idle
up
the
engine
and
corresponding
speed
and
how
much
hydraulic
pressure
you're
getting
right.
It
takes
a
little
bit
of
getting
used
to
to
realize
which
which
directions
controlling
upper
and
lower
boom,
but
once
you
do
it
becomes
pretty
intuitive
and.
A
What
sort
of
implements
or
tools
am
I
picking
up
with
me?
So
here's
here's
the
tool
that
I've
been
given
yep
the
chainsaw.
This
is
a
pretty
standard
equipment.
I
also
have
a
poleax
at
my
disposal
if
I
want
to
use
that
so
we're
going
to
give
this
a
try
once
I
get
up
there
and
hopefully
I'll
come
down
with
all
my
fingers.
Yeah
well.
A
Before
I
go
up
in
the
bucket
trucks
there,
just
a
couple
of
updates.
I
thought
I'd
share
with
you.
First
of
all,
you're
going
to
see
information
about
an
incentivized
retirement
program
that
has
been
approved
by
the
City
Council
developed
by
staff,
and
the
reason
that
we're
doing
this
is
that
we
know
we
have
some
budget
challenges
coming
up
in
the
next
year
or
two
and
we're
looking
for
opportunities
to
try
and
reduce
the
budget
where
we
can.
A
So
we
know
we
have
a
number
of
employees
who
are
long
tenured
here
and
who
may
be
ready
to
leave.
So
what
this
will
help
us
do
is
actually
plan
for
the
departure
in
a
more
thoughtful
and
systematic
way,
provide
an
opportunity
for
people
to
leave
on
terms
that
they're
happy
with,
and
then
it
provides
us
an
opportunity
to
get
some
budget
savings
in
the
differential
between
higher
paid
employees
and
people
who
may
back
filled
in
at
a
lower
rate,
so
that
information
will
be
out
there
to
be
eligible
for
that
program.
A
You
have
to
have
at
least
20
years
with
the
city
and
also
be
retirement
eligible
based
on
the
public,
employee
pension
requirements,
so
it'll
be
more
information
in
that
regard
and
then,
in
terms
of
City
Council
action,
we
had
a
study
session
recently.
It
was
very
interesting
number
of
updates
first
mark
Ritchie,
whose
former
Secretary
of
State's
is
now
leading
the
effort
to
bring
a
World
Fair
to
Minnesota.
So
the
expo
2020
3
is
what
they're
working
toward
it
will
be
around
the
metro
area,
we're
not
exactly
sure
of
the
location.
A
What
we
are
sure
of
is
that
Bloomington
will
have
a
prominent
role
if
it
comes
here
because
of
our
9,000
hotel
rooms
in
our
vibrant
hospitality
industry.
So
our
CVB
or
convention
Visitors
Bureau
has
been
very
active
in
the
expo
23
pursuit,
and
he
was
time
for
mark
Ritchie
to
come
update.
The
council
is
that
application
is
moving
forward.
A
It's
about
a
12-mile
stretch
and
so
they're
getting
close
to
having
that
alignment
figured
out
they'll
be
coming
in
this
summer
to
do
some
public
engagement,
open
houses,
I!
Imagine
to
share
the
alignment
so
that
people
have
once
again
an
opportunity
to
weigh
in
and
we're
hopeful
that
in
the
next
couple
of
years
we
will
start
to
see
development
of
the
trail
down
in
the
Minnesota
River
Valley.
That
will
provide
access
to
a
real
beautiful
area.
A
A
A
Well,
once
again,
we
get
a
fantastic
view
of
Bloomington
this
time
from
the
bucket
truck
of
our
public
works
department,
our
tree
trimming
crew,
who
do
a
great
job
every
day
to
make
sure
that
our
urban
canopy
is
healthy
and
then
it's
beautiful
for
our
residents,
it
state
for
our
part
and
it's
good
for
our
community.
So
once
again
from
the
top
of
the
bucket
truck
this
is
the
Berber
give.
You
will
see
you
next
time.
