Description
In a long-awaited edition of the Verbrugge View, I have a summary from the joint City Council and School board meeting, an introduction to some of the new faces you’ll see around Bloomington and a recap on the Super Bowl.
A
Hello
and
welcome
back
to
the
much-awaited
next
edition
of
the
Verbruggen
law,
occasional
download
of
things
that
are
going
the
organization
and
in
our
community
and
today,
I
have
three
quick
hits
for
you.
So
first
I
want
to
provide
a
summary
of
a
joint
meeting
that
we
had
with
the
Bloomington
City
Council
in
the
Bloomington
school
board.
This
past
week,
we've
tried
to
get
in
the
habit
of
meeting
with
those
two
groups
a
couple
times
a
year
and
so
for
the
last
three
years.
I
think
this
is
our
sixth
joint
meeting
that
we've
had.
A
We
had
a
Content
rich
conversation
of
a
lot
of
collaboration,
that's
going
on
between
the
school
district
and
between
the
city,
so
we
had
updates
from
public
health
in
terms
of
a
data
sharing
agreement
that
our
public
health
folks
work
with
the
school
board
to
identify
incoming
students
into
the
district
so
that
the
school
knows
that
they
come
in
ready
to
learn.
So
that's
a
really
important
initiative.
That's
going
on.
A
We
also
have
our
public
works
department
and
engineering
and
maintenance
working
to
make
sure
that
safe
routes
to
school
are
happening
around
the
communities
so
that
students
going
to
school
are
able
to
get
there
everyday
and
are
able
to
learn.
So
we
have
a
number
of
initiatives,
some
of
it
with
federally
funded
grant
money
that
makes
physical
improvements
to
make
access
to
the
schools
a
lot
easier.
So
we
had
a
nice
presentation
about
that.
We
also
talked
about
the
possibility
of
a
partnership
between
the
schools
in
the
city
on
a
Bloomington
Community
Center
project.
A
But
the
City
Council
feels
pretty
strongly
that
the
synergy
between
the
Valley
View
middle
school
and
elementary
being
there
with
the
city's
recreation
amenities
across
the
street,
with
the
Bloomington
family,
Aquatic
Center,
the
Kent,
Hrbek
fields,
red
Haddix
fields,
bocce
all
the
other
amenities
that
are
in
that
location,
combined
with
the
YMCA's
interest
and
being
in
that
area,
because
it
has
very
strong
demographics
for
the
programming
that
they
provide.
It
just
seems
to
be
a
really
good
opportunity,
and
so
we're
going
to
spend
the
next
couple
months
exploring
that.
A
So
you
can
look
forward
to
hearing
more
information
about
a
potential
partnership
on
a
Bloomington
community
center
with
the
school
district
and
the
YMCA.
Another
item
that
is
going
on
in
the
organization
is
we've.
Had
that's
not
an
item
really.
It's
just
we've
had
a
lot
of
new
faces
coming
into
the
organization.
As
a
matter
of
fact,
we
just
announced
the
new
Director
of
Community
Development.
A
His
name
is
Eric
Johnson
he'll
be
coming
to
the
city
of
Bloomington
from
New,
Orleans
Louisiana,
and
we're
very
excited
to
welcome
him
to
the
executive
leadership
team,
other
positions
that
are
newly
filled,
John
Bradford's,
new
maintenance
superintendent
over
in
Public
Works.
He
joins
Scott
Anderson,
not
new
to
the
organization
but
new
to
his
position
as
utilities
superintendent,
following
on
the
hire
last
year
of
Mary
hurlimann
as
the
deputy
public
works
director,
so
over
in
Public
Works,
we
got
three
new
faces
on
their
management
team.
A
We
also
are
in
the
process
of
hiring
a
new
new
human
resources
manager.
That
announcement
will
be
coming
in
the
near
future
and
we
have
a
new
manager
over
at
the
golf
course
Peter
Kurvers
is
coming
to
us
and
will
be
starting
very
soon,
we're
looking
forward
to
having
Peter
and
his
expertise
to
provide
the
future
vision
and
direction
for
our
duan
and
Highland
greens
operations.
A
So
if
you
see
these
new
faces
around
the
organization,
please
take
a
moment
to
say
hi
and
welcome
them
make
sure
they
feel
part
of
the
team
and
I
expect
you'll
see
a
lot
more
information
about
some
of
those
folks
in
the
very
near
future
as
well.
The
last
thing
is
just
to
comment
on
what
was
a
tremendous
staff
initiative
over
the
last
year
and
touched
just
about
every
division
here
in
the
city
in
some
way,
and
that
was
the
Super
Bowl.
You
know.
A
For
more
than
a
year,
our
staff
has
been
deeply
engaged
in
a
lot
of
planning
because
much
of
the
activity
with
the
Super
Bowl
was
occurring
here
in
Bloomington
in
the
South
Loop
district.
If
the
Mall
of
America,
if
you
weren't
aware
the
Philadelphia
Eagles
stayed
at
the
Radisson
blue
and
the
New
England
Patriots
stayed
at
the
JW
Marriott.
The
media.
Radio
row
is
what
they
called.
A
The
media
center
was
on
the
third
floor,
north
side
of
the
Mall
of
America
that
brought
in
thousands
and
thousands
of
people
every
day
and
Sirius
XM
had
their
stages
set
up
in
the
north
atrium.
There
were
a
lot
of
events
and
activations
going
on
in
the
Bloomington
Central
Station.
Our
creative
placemaking
Commission
worked
with
other
stakeholders
in
that
area.
To
do
an
activation
called
illuminate
South
Loop,
which
had
some
really
cool
activities
going
on.
A
A
You
made
our
community
look
good
millions
of
impressions
around
the
world
of
positive
Bloomington
business
community,
our
hospitality
industry
in
the
fact
that
we
handle
really
big
events
really
well.
So
congratulations
to
all
of
you.
Thank
you
for
your
efforts
and
once
again
it's
good
to
see
Bloomington
looking
good
too
the
rest
of
the
world,
because
we
know
that
every
day
is
just
nice
that
every
now
and
then
other
people
learn
about
it.
That's
all
I
have
for
you
today,
we'll
be
back
soon
with
another
edition
of
the
Verbruggen
lock.
