From YouTube: Verbrugge View - Lake Water Testing
Description
In this week’s Verbrugge View, I brave the beautiful, sunny weather we had last week to show you how Public Works employees collect data from our lakes.
I also have an update on efforts to improve flooding conditions at American and Knox and upcoming meetings about the budget process.
P.S. Mark your calendar for the Public Works Open House and Kite Day this Saturday!
A
One
of
the
great
things
about
living
in
the
city
of
Bloomington
is
the
natural
environment,
and
so
today
we're
going
to
visit
with
Steve
gurney,
our
water
resource
specialist
and
we're
going
to
talk
about
the
work
that
our
staff
does
to
ensure
the
health
of
the
lakes
ponds
and
streams
in
the
city
of
Bloomington
and
share
with
you
what
you
can
do
to
help
maintain
that
hill.
Why
don't
you
come
along
for
this
week's
Verbruggen
view.
A
Today,
I
am
at
Busch
Lake,
with
Steve
Byrne
a
water
resource
specialist
in
our
Public
Works
Department
Steve
is
going
to
talk
to
us
today
about
what
they
do
to
test
for
water
quality
and
make
sure
that
the
health
of
our
ponds
and
lakes
in
the
community
is
staying
strong,
so
Steve
welcome
to
the
show.
Thank
you
so
tell
me
a
little
bit
about
what
you
do
generally
before
we
start
looking
at
the
equipment.
Sure.
B
I
I
do
all
kinds
of
different
public
outreach
type
activities,
I
answer
questions.
If
people
have
flooding
concerns
or
or
if
they're,
not
sure
whether
they
should
be
fertilizing,
their
yard
extra
I
go
out
when
we
have
people
that
rip
their
leaves
into
the
streets
and
educate
them.
Why
that's
not
a
good
idea
to
do
so?
B
Unfortunately,
we
still
have
some
people
that
don't
paint
down
the
storm
drains,
and
so
that's
another
thing
that
I
go
out
and
do
we
also
go
around
in
the
summer
and
monitor
some
of
the
ponds
throughout
the
city
and
that's
kind
of
what
we're
going
to
show
today
is
how
we
go
about.
We
grab
a
sample
and
take
care
of
that,
like
the
lab,
I
think.
A
B
B
Sure
we
take,
we
take
the
kayak
out
come
we
do
a
couple
different
things
there.
We
measure
the
depth
of
some
of
the
ponds
and
we
get
the
volume
of
each
of
those
ponds,
and
by
that
we
can
tell
how
much
each
of
those
pounds
is
giving
us
and
that
helps
the
nutrients
settle
out
of
the
water
and
it
helps
provide
provide
better
water
quality
for
downstream
water
bodies,
whether
they
be
our
lakes
or
our
streams
or
the
Minnesota
River.
We
also
do
grant
what's
called
a
grab
sample
and
I'll.
A
B
They
can
do
a
lot
of
things
they
can
die,
they
can
clean
up
their
yard
waste.
They
can
clean
up
after
their
pets,
they
can
take
their
leaves
and
begum
and
and
not
throw
them
on
the
street.
That's
a
bad
thing
and
then
this
fall
will
be
coming
up
with
an
adoptive
storm
drain
program.
It's
going
to
be
a
cooperative
effort
with
the
9
Mile
Creek
watershed
district
and.
B
A
That's
really
an
opportunity
where
people
can
make
a
difference
by
their
intentional
and
certainly
not
just
by
you
know
what
they
normally
do.
Correct,
correct,
that's
fantastic!
Now,
let's
go
to
the
kayak
and
we're
going
to
learn
a
little
bit
about
the
equipment.
That's
even
our
other
folks
in
public
works
use
to
make
sure
the
water
quality
is
good.
This.
B
Is
a
project
that
we
got
two
years
ago:
it's
a
14-footer
and
it's
a
single
person
kayak.
We
take
this
out
on
the
ponds
around
the
city
and
we
measure
the
depth
to
using
a
depth
finder
and
with
the
depth
finder.
It
will
give
us
elevations
in
the
bottom
of
the
lake
in
a
bunch
of
spots.
We
can
then
upload
that
information
to
the
cloud
and
it
will
give
us
a
volume
of
the
ponds
and
that's
how
we
check
if
they're,
what
their
treatment
efficiencies
are.
B
A
Before
I
go
for
a
ride
in
the
boat,
I
want
to
share
some
updates
for
what's
going
on
around
the
organization.
That's
the
last
city
council
study
session.
We
talked
about
a
project
to
improve
the
long
time,
flooding
of
the
area
at
American
and
Knox
the
Northeast
Penn
in
American
storm
surge
situation.
A
Our
staff
has
been
working
on
that
for
a
couple
years
and
trying
to
build
supports
among
the
property
owners
in
the
area
for
a
solution
that
works
for
them
and
works
for
the
city
to
make
sure
that
the
tendency
to
flood
during
significant
rain
events
is
reduced
because
it
really
is
adversely
affecting
the
the
ability
to
develop
and
the
safety
of
the
area.
So
we
presented
an
option
to
the
City
Council
on
Monday
night
with
a
recommendation
to
proceed.
A
We
don't
have
the
full
support
of
the
impacted
property
owners,
yet
they
will
have
an
opportunity
to
share
their
concerns
more
with
the
council
and
we
expect
to
hear
from
them.
But
the
really
important
piece
is
that
we
are
solving
a
problem
that
has
been
long-lasting
as
a
matter
of
fact,
since
that
area
was
a
reclaimed
wetland.
A
One
of
the
things
that
we
learned
today
was
about
the
health
of
water,
but
water
always
wins,
and
so,
even
though
we
reclaimed
that
wetland
60
years
ago,
it
still
tries
to
come
back,
so
our
engineers
have
been
hard
at
work.
Looking
for
a
long-term
solution
to
make
sure
that
flooding
doesn't
affect
the
area.
Another
thing
that
is
coming
up
for
you
are
introductions
to
the
budget
process
for
2018,
we'll
have
a
couple
of
meetings
in
June
and
the
dates
are
right
here.
So
we'll
be
talking
about
the
upcoming
budget
process.
A
So
we
will
share
more
with
that
more
with
you
in
a
couple
of
weeks
at
the
meetings
that
you
are
welcome,
to
attend
and
once
again
a
reminder
that
coming
up
on
Saturday,
May
20th,
our
public
works
will
be
having
an
open
house,
so
kids
will
be
able
to
come
in
and
climb
around
all
the
vehicles
in
our
garage.
You
can
also
go
out
and
do
tours
of
the
water
treatment.
A
B
A
B
A
One
other
thing:
that's
really
important
for
our
staff
that
work
out
in
the
field
is
to
make
sure
that
we
have
proper
equipment
for
conditions,
and
so
I
know
that
our
risk
manager
would
want
me
to
tell
you
that
when
we
have
people
work
in
the
field,
it's
always
important
to
have
a
hat
on
right.
To
keep
yes
off
of
the
pace
and
I.
Imagine
you
wear
a
lot
of
fun
screams.
Yes,
so
protective
equipment
isn't
just
the
type
of
stuff
that
firefighters
wear
protective
equipment
also
includes
protection
from
the
Sun
for
our
outdoor
workers.
A
So
once
again,
we've
shown
you
a
little
bit
of
the
city
of
Bloomington
that
you
may
not
have
known.
We
provide
as
part
of
our
city
services,
making
sure
that
the
health
of
our
lakes
and
our
ponds
and
our
streams
and
understanding
how
what
we
do
as
residents
contributes
to
the
health
of
those
water
bodies
is
really
important.
And
so
thanks
to
Steve
gurney
for
showing
us
what
we
needed
to
know
today
on
the
verb
review.
