From YouTube: Artist Interview: Derek Carpenter
Description
Collaborating with a fellow artist, Courtney Goerlitz, Derek painted a large-scale mural on a vacant building in his Martin Acres neighborhood. The imagery includes a woman in a face mask alongside a sapling emerging from the stump of a felled. Derek wants the mural to provide a symbol of resiliency for the community. Creative Neighborhoods: COVID-19 Work Projects was launched by the Office of Arts + Culture and Create Boulder: https://boulderarts.org/public-art/creative-neighborhoods/covid-19-work-projects/
A
A
So
a
lot
of
my
business,
that's
done
as
an
artist
and
not
just
business,
but
enjoyment
as
well
is
live
painting
at
festivals
and
there
were
no
festivals.
This
year
I
usually
do
at
least
three
or
four
so
that
made
a
significant
difference.
In
my
summer.
A
So
this
award
was
synchronistic
because
I
had
been
in
conversation
with
a
friend
leah
who
manages
art
projects
in
boulder,
and
she,
let
me
know
about
a
building
that
had
been
vandalized.
It's
the
the
unused
wendy's
building
near.
Let's
see
it's
like
baseline
and
29th,
and
the
owner
you
know
was
not
happy,
obviously,
and
it
also
like
the
graffiti-
and
this
is
just
an
opinion,
but
the
graffiti
was
pretty
unsightly
and
I
think
that
it
just
kind
of
made
the
place.
A
Look,
you
know
run
down,
and
so
they
wanted
to
get
it
redone
and
we
needed
some
funds.
And
then
this
grant
enabled
me
to
go
and
paint
the
building.
And
while
I
was
there,
you
know
people
that
walk
by
like
there's
a
lot
of
foot
traffic
people
were
expressing
their
gratitude,
and
so
I
got
the
sense
that
it
was
appreciated.
A
Yeah
I'll
do
a
little
shameless
self-promotion,
so
I
have
a
website
called
artof1.org,
the
three
words
art
of
one
and
I'm
using
my
art
to
do
social
enterprise.
So
half
of
everything
we
make
gets
donated
to
environmental
groups
and
if
anyone
wants
to
check
out
my
work
or
any
of
my
offerings
it's
on
there,
I
have
like
an
apparel
line
and
prints
and
all
kinds
of
things.
