A
Welcome
to
inside
Boulder
news,
I'm
Natalie
Wood,
how
an
agency
responds
to
disasters,
impacts,
property
and
lives.
Boulders
emergency
response
systems
saw
great
success
during
the
Flagstaff
fire
last
summer.
Now
those
operations
are
being
highlighted
on
an
international
stage:
Boulder
emergency
management,
specialist
Amy
danzel,
recently
traveled
to
Thailand
to
teach
local
officials
how
to
design
adaptable
logistic
systems
for
emergency
situations.
What's.
C
Unique
and
bolder
is
that
we've
taken
bits
and
pieces
from
several
models
and
we've
developed
a
system
that
really
works
for
us.
So
we
do
what
we
call
systems
design
work,
which
is
which
is
really
what
what
the
class
I
taught
was,
and
it's
really
teaching
them
how
to
build
a
system
unique
to
their
context,
so
that
that
really
takes
into
account
their
policy
group
they're,
sort
of
environments,
their
hazards,
the
first
responder
community
and
in
their
actual
community,
like
the
residents
who
live
in
their
communities,
we're
certainly
sharing
what
we're
doing.
C
A
Danzel
says
the
key
is
building
a
system
unique
to
the
context
of
an
agency
responding
to
a
disaster.
It
may
seem
small,
but
in
2010
an
illegal
campfire
blew
up
to
burn
dozens
of
acres
of
open
space
and
caused
more
than
half
a
million
dollars
in
damage
passed.
Images
from
the
dome
fire
and
recent
reports
of
illegal
campfires
serve
as
a
reminder
for
residents
and
visitors
to
be
mindful
of
potential
fire
danger,
while
enjoying
our
outdoors
a
couple.
D
Weeks
ago
we
got
a
911
call
that
there
was
a
campfire
in
progress.
So
we
came
to
this
location
here
and
found
a
campfire
actively
burning
the
interesting
thing
about
this
fire
is:
it
was
a
red
flag
warning
day
and
what
that
means
is
if
a
fire
were
to
start.
It
has
the
potential
for
rapid
growth,
rapid
rate
of
spread,
which
a
campfire
certainly
can
be.
E
D
Part,
that's
really
alarming,
for
us
is
right
now
we're
in
a
prolonged
drought,
very
similar
to
the
conditions
of
2001
2002
when
Colorado
experienced
some
of
its
largest
wildfires
with
that,
as
well
as
having
these
fires,
if
they
were
to
get
get
out
of
the
fire
ring,
we
could
be
looking
at
a
pretty
big
event.
A.
E
Lot
of
people
have
a
different
sense
of
what
constitutes
that
fire
being
out
our
definition
of
that
fire
being
out
is,
you
could
literally
take
an
unloved
hand
and
put
it
in
the
coals
of
the
fire
for
a
lot
of
people.
They
say
we
don't
see
flames,
okay,
let's
go,
but
of
course,
30
minutes
later.
The
wind
picks
up
starts
to
blow
off
some
of
that
white
ash
off
of
those
hot
coals
and
all
sudden
you've
got
a
very
easy
point
of
ignition
bring
water
with
you
bring
a
tool
with
you.
A
Backyard
spans
across
many
different
agencies,
so
no
one
is
allowed
before
you
head
out.
No
open
fires
are
allowed
in
Boulder.
There
are
several
designated
areas
and
campsites
equipped
with
fire
structures
that
can
be
used
during
certain
hours
of
the
day
and
when
the
fire
danger
is
low

Boulders
beautiful,
open
space
has
been
an
inspiration
for
many
artists.
The
city
of
Boulder
is
seeking
submissions
for
the
2013
open
space
and
mountain
parks.
A
F
Really
it's
people
expressing
their
connection
to
the
open
space
in
mountain
park
lands
in
whatever
way.
What
we're
really
looking
for
is
a
variety,
and
you
know
we
want
to
have
a
spectrum
from
amateur
to
professional
and
from
many
different
parts
of
our
system.
Many
different
seasons
represented
we'd
love
to
see
wildlife
and
animals
and
as
well
as
the
lands,
so
we're
looking
for
variety.

A
Show
will
be
held
in
the
boulder
Public
Library
Canyon
gallery
from
July
26
to
August
twenty-ninth.
The
deadline
for
submissions
is
June,
twenty-eighth
from
hiking
and
biking
to
fitness
classes
and
perusing.
The
Pearl
Street
Mall
Boulder
offers
many
unique
recreation
opportunities,
now's
your
chance
to
shape
the
future
of
Parks
and
Recreation
and
ensure
your
favorite
pursuits
are
readily
available.
The
city
is
holding
a
Parks
and
Recreation
master
plan
open
house
next
week
and
the
community
is
invited
to
provide
feedback
about
draft
strategies.
The.

G
With
the
final
plan,
the
community
process
has
been
true
to
Boulder.
It's
been
extensive.
It's
been
thorough.
We've
heard
some
incredible
information,
some
great
information
relative
to
where
they
want
us
to
go,
and
now
we
just
start
marching
forward.
Once
the
plan
is
adopted
and
over
the
next
five
years
will
start
to
see
some
significant
changes
relative
to
the
programs
that
we
offer
improvements
enhancements
in
the
services
we
do
and
really
making
sure
that
we're
delivering
to
the
community.
What
they've
asked
us
to
deliver
within
the
resources
that
we
have
you.
A
Can
share
your
ideas
at
the
community
open
house
on
thursday
april
eleventh
from
four
to
seven
p.m.
at
the
east
boulder
community
center.
You
can
also
get
information
and
stay
up
to
date
with
the
master
plan
process
at
Boulder,
Parks
and
Rec
plan
org
cleanup
efforts
on
University
Hill
are
moving
forward
with
the
donation
of
four
trash
and
recycling
bins
from
western
disposal.
The
bins
were
installed
at
high
traffic
areas
on
the
hill
over
spring
break
Western
hopes
the
donation
will
help
prevent
littering
in
the
area
and
divert
recyclable
materials
from
the
landfill.
We.
H
I
H
Young
people
residents,
hopefully,
will
avail
themselves
of
the
new
bins
and
as
they're
walking
by
and
they
have
that
cup
where
that
bottle
really
put
it
in
the
right
spot,
because
it's
not
just
about
trash,
it
really
is
about
diverting
material
from
the
landfill
we're
trying
to
make
it
really
easy
to
make
those
choices.
There's
been.
I
An
ad
hoc
group
that's
been
meeting
for
well
over
two
years
now
of
community
members,
University
members
city
members,
business
members
really
discussing.
How
can
we
change
the
perception
of
what
the
hill
is
westerns
been
on
board
since
very
beginning?
They
stepped
forward
and
said
we
want
to
help,
and
this
is
the
way
we
came
up
with
a
way
for
them
to
help
this.
